Dream Theater - Lie - Canciones Para Una Vida

 

LIE 

Hablar de Dream Theater es hacerlo de una banda no apta para todos los públicos, como en general sucede con el metal progresivo del que ellos son el máximo exponente, siempre compleja, su música requiere tiempo y dedicación para extraer todo el jugo, es de esos grupos que hay que escuchar, no poner de fondo. En 1994, su disco "awake" nacía con la presión de suceder al antológico "Images and words" de 1992, y para ello la banda solo emplearía un par de meses en su concepción tras la extensa gira mundial del citado antecedente compositivo, sería además, el último disco de estudio con Moore a los teclados antes de la llegada de Sherinian, una obra de la que dejo hoy en el blog otra de sus canciones, "Lie", todo un clásico de la banda del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Dream Theater - Midnight Messiah

MIDNIGHT  MESSIAH

Ya llevabamos demasiado tiempo desde la publicación del anterior trabajo de estudio de los estadounidenses Dream Theater, concretamente cuatro años desde su "A view from the top of the world", y es que la banda siempre ha mostrado su virtuosismo, con mayor o menor acierto, aunque claro, eso también depende del oido que les escucha, lo que evidente es que su música no es para todos los publicos, es de ese sonido que requiere del oyente un plus de atención que no todo el mundo está dispuesto a dar, sin embargo, cuando Dream Theater te llega, te llega de verdad, y mi sensación es que están en un gran momento de su carrera, máxime a juzgar a través de sus adelantos de "Parasominia" de inminente publicación oficial (7 de febrero). NIGHT  TERROR

Es siempre un gustazo ver como las grandes bandas siguen empeñadas en continuar su carrera, en dar un paso más al frente tratando de lograr hacer su nombre aún mayor y más legendario, y en esas están los estadounidenses Dream Theater, uno de los padres del sonido progresivo dentro del heavy power, y sin duda uno de los más famosos a nivel planetario. Ya para el cercano 2025 (Febrero), la banda editará su decimo sexto LP de estudio "Parasomnia" del que en estos día nos van llegando los primeros ecos a través de su primer adelanto "Night Terror", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube de su clip oficial.

Canciones para una vida - Dream Theater - 6:00

 

6:00

En uno de sus mejores momentos como banda, cuando habían deslumbrado a la escena internacional un par de años antes con su "Images & Words" de 1992, en 1994 Dream Theater dejaban su tercer capítulo, "Awake". Al hablar de ciertas bandas lo hacemos sobre pioneros en sus campos respectivos, referentes, grupos que han cogido cosas y las han llevado a un nivel superior, y no siempre tienen porqué haber inventado nada nuevo, en ocasiones basta con un enfoque personal de algo ya existente para lograr un resultado brillante e influyente. Desde luego que los estadounidenses Dream Theater son uno de esos referentes en este caso en el apartado metálico progresivo. "Awake" resultó ser un LP más potente que su antecesor, un punto en el que todos sus miembros lucieron a gran altura y eso se nota en cada canción, desde su inicio, "6:00", tema del que hoy dejo en el blog un enlace a youtube.

ANSWERING  THE  CALL

Completamente repleto de cliches "Dream Theater", el décimo quinto album de estudio de los estadounidenses, "A view from the top of the world" del presente 2021 es una nueva confirmación de su puesto como reyes del metal progresivo, particularmente este disco muy en la línea de su sonido más clásico. Es de hecho una especie de mirada hacia la carrera completa de la banda, cogiendo matices aquí y allá de las pasadas obras, de las pasadas épocas, lo cual da claramente esa sensación familiar al escuchar la obra. Siempre destaca, y aquí lo hace también, y sospecho que siempre lo hará, la calidad de los integrantes de la banda, se trata de músicos que han demostrado todo en lo que atécnica se refiere, y siguen dando lecciones de calidad, tras ya camino de cuatro décadas en esto de la música. Hoy quiero dejar en el blog otro de los temas de la obra, en concreto "Answering the call", donde el protagonismo se alterna entre la guitarra y el teclado, el buen hacer de la parte vocal persidiendo todo mientras al fondo la percusión y bajo dan forma a un tema que suena muy a Dream Theater y que hará las delicias de los seguidores de la banda, un tema del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Dream Theater - Forsaken

 

FORSAKEN

Nuevo repaso a la larguísima carrera ya de los estadounidenses Dream Theater en estos días previos a la salida del nuevo material que se espera para este inminente mes de octubre. Será el décimo quinto LP de estudio desde que se formase la banda en 1988 bajo el nombre de Dream Theater, y mientras nos presentan por completo la nueva obra que se va desgranando poco a poco con sus adelantos, es una excusa cojonuda para rebuscar en el amplio y de categoría catálogo de la banda. Hoy quiero recuperar el noveno disco de estudio del grupo, "Systematic Chaos", de 2007, en particular una obra variada, siempre con el espíritu de la banda, ese toque que solo los reyes del progresivo pueden imprimir a todos sus discos que les ha hecho ser tan reconocibles y reconocidos, además de imitados. Su primer single de esta obra fue "Forsaken", canción por su estructura muy accesible a todo tipo de metalheads, sin excesos progresivos, un single de manual, y de la que hoy quiero dejar en el blog un enlace a youtube.

THE  ALIEN

La décimo quinta obra de estudio de la banda estadounidense Dream Theater va desgranando sus primeros secretos a través del primero de los adelantos. Poco tiene una banda como esta ya que demostrar, poco sorprenderá a los seguidores y conocedores de su sonido tras una carrera ya de más de tres décadas a sus espaldas, y más cuando escuchas el primero de los singles de este "A view from the top of the world" de título "The Alien", con el que abren la obra, y te encuentras con todos los ingredientes esperados y esperables, absolutamente Dream Theater, de los clásicos de su propio sonido, incluidos esos continuos cambios y la longotud grandes de la canción que casi se va a los diez minutos. Es por algo que se les considera los reyes del sonido progresivo, y este "The Alien" es un motivo más en los muchos que atesoran en su carrera para seguir haciendo méritos a tal reinado. Canciones para una vida - Dream Theater - At Wit's End

AT  WIT'S  END

Tengo la sensación, con la escucha reposada de esta, la décimo tercera obra de estudio de la banda estadounidense "Dream Theater", uno de los reyes por méritos propios del metal progresivo, de que estamos ante uno de esos momentos en los que la banda se encuentra a gusto, El disco, "Distance over time" ha resultado ser una obra de rápido disfrute, sin rastro de relleno, sin exceso de recovecos y momentos en los que perderse, algo que les ha sucedido en alguna ocasión y en alguna obra, incluso para ser ellos, es decir, cuando uno afronta un estilo como el progresivo sabe que debe tener más atención a los detalles, sabe que los temas pueden ser densos, de larga duración y múltiples matices, y sabe que en muchos aspectos ahí está la gracia de lo que escucha, pero no es difícil que al practicar este estilo se llegue a rizar el rizo provocando que uno pueda llegar a perderse. No es el caso del disco, (y pocas veces de la banda), una obra, como decía más arriba facilmente digerible, y buen ejemplo de ello es este tema que hoy dejo en el blog, "At wit's end", de larga duración, (casi 10 minutos, la más larga de la obra) pero que resulta ser un tema de los que no te aburren en absoluto, con el toque justo de cada cosa y que se queda en tu cabeza, una canción más de esta obra de la que dejo hoy en el blog un enlace a youtube de su clip oficial.

FALL  INTO  THE  LIGHT

Confirmando mi impresión inicial, y tras la escucha por completo de la decimo cuarta obra de estudio de los americanos "Dream Theater", "Distance Over Time", de este 2019. Hacía tiempo que una obra de este grupo no despertaba tanta ilusión en mí, creo que ultimamente habían perdido un poquito la esencia de los inicios que aquí veo recuperar. Es igualmente evidente que siempre hay calidad en cada una de las producciones de una banda icónica como esta, y es que los grupos de este calibre son grandes solo por ese motivo, la calidad. Tras esa catarsis que el propio grupo confiesa haber tenido en alguna entrevista, que les ha hecho mirar a la forma en que hacían las cosas más al inicio de su carrera la verdad es que me ha faltado tiempo para acercarme a esta obra de la que hoy dejo en el blog el que ha sido su segundo single de adelanto, "Fall into the light", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Dream Theater - Paralyzed

PARALYZED

 Si en la anterior entrada del blog me refería a una banda consagrada dentro de la escena internacional dentro del heavy metal como es Judas Priest, uno de los gigantes entre los gigantes, hoy quiero recurrir a otra de esas bandas pioneras e influyentes dentro de lo suyo, el subgénero progresivo, los estadounidenses Dream Theater, otro gigante dentro de esto del metal. Hoy quiero referirme al último disco de la banda, una obra que a día de hoy aún no ha salido oficialmente, no lo harás hasta el día 22 de febrero, (es decir ya mismo), un aálbum que la propia banda no ha dudado en calificar como un cierto retorno a las raíces, un ejercicio de unión de la banda con una mirada algo más contundente, más heavy, eso sí, sin dejar de mirar al sello característico que ha hecho grande al grupo. Varios son los adelantos de la obra hasta este momento, algo a lo que nos tienen acostumbrados estos tíos, y de esos singles de adelanto hoy quiero dejar en el blog el último de ellos, "Paralyzed", una canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube. AFTERLIFE

Toda banda tiene un inicio que demuestra en la mayor parte de las ocasiones por donde pueden ir los tiros musicales en su carrera futura. Luego muchos son los factores que deciden si las buenas cosas prometidas tan temprano son llevadas a buen término más adelante o no. En esta ocasión refiriéndome a Dream Theater es indudable que los muchos y buenos apuntes de este primer LP de la banda "When Dream And Day Unite", de 1989 mostraban a un grupo de primerísima línea que ha llegado a ser uno de los máximos exponentes en lo suyo, el metal progresivo. Ya desde tan temprano mostraban los Portnoy, Myung y Petrucci su calidad, y en esta primera obra de los estadounidenses el cantante era Charlie Dominici, antes de que otra de las señas de identidad de la banda, el cantante James LaBrie pasase a ser la cabeza visible de Dream Theater desde 1991 en adelante. BURNING MY SOUL

 Dream Theater son una banda defensora de un estilo progresivo, sus creaciones pueden resultar demasiado complejas al oído no acostumbrado a su estilo con canciones que en muchas ocasiones superan ampliamente los 10 minutos y con una vocación instrumental y conceptual. Estos estadounidenses llevan tocando desde 1985 bajo el nombre de "Majesty" y cambiando su denominación a Dream Theater con la que empezaron a sacar discos de estudio en 1989. Desde entonces llevan a sus espaldas 12 discos de estudio habiendo vendido hasta 2011 más de 12 millones de copias de sus obras. Nadie puede dudar de su calidad, puedes ser más o menos fan pero es innegable su potencial. Volvamos una vez más la cabeza hacia los inicios de la banda en el panorama internacional para referirnos a su cuarto larga duración, "Falling into infinity", del año 1997, un disco al que le toco ser el difícil sucesor de una de las épocas más gloriosas y "vendedoras" de la banda como fue el periodo inicial del grupo con su "Images and words" y su "Awake", de los que ya hemos hablado en el blog, y es que, al fijarme en las entradas que voy poniendo en él referentes a esta banda, me doy cuenta ahora de que me estoy refiriendo al grupo en orden estrictamente cronológico aunque sin pretenderlo, lo que prueba para mi la importancia de su inicio de carrera, (en lo que a mis gustos se refiere, claro está). En fin, sea como sea, hoy vuelvo a sus comienzos, pero para hablar de un disco en el que se muestran unos Dream Theater que comienzan a cambiar respecto a sus orígenes, paradojicamente hacia un intento de música más accesible a todos los públicos presionados por cambios d¡en su discográfica y en la dirección de la misma, a lo que se une el cambio de interno en la banda de parte de sus integrantes (Derek Sherinian por Kevin Moore a los teclados). Entra en escena "Desmond Child", músico y escritor profesional de canciones, impuesto por la discográfica para intentar hacer a Dream theater más para todos los públicos. El resultado fue una intrusión compositiva que se nota en algunos de los temas de este disco, (sobre todo en "You not me"), y que terminó repercutiendo de manera contraria en crítica y publico, de la que se pretendía, (como suele suceder siempre en estos casos), y es que creo yo que la albor de las discográficas ha de ser otra que la de decir a los músicos que y como, si no te gusta lo que hacen, no les des tu apoyo, si te gustan, promociona y vende su material, así de sencillo. El disco es por lo tanto un producto de la banda y del marketing brutal que ya comenzaba a arrastrar, que si que llego al puesto 52 en las listas estadounidenses, tan caras de conquistar, pero aún así, es un disco de Dream theater con grandes temas, como por ejemplo este "Burning My soul", que hoy quiero dejar en el blog, y del que dejo hoy un enlace a youtube.

Dream Theater son una banda defensora de un estilo progresivo, sus creaciones pueden resultar demasiado complejas al oído no acostumbrado a su estilo con canciones que en muchas ocasiones superan ampliamente los 10 minutos y con una vocación instrumental y conceptual. Estos estadounidenses llevan tocando desde 1985 bajo el nombre de "Majesty" y cambiando su denominación a Dream Theater con la que empezaron a sacar discos de estudio en 1989. Desde entonces llevan a sus espaldas 12 discos de estudio habiendo vendido hasta 2011 más de 12 millones de copias de sus obras. Nadie puede dudar de su calidad, puedes ser más o menos fan pero es innegable su potencial. Volvamos una vez más la cabeza hacia los inicios de la banda en el panorama internacional para referirnos a su tercer larga duración, de título "Awake", del año 1994, digno sucesor de su aclamado y más exitoso disco hasta la fecha de esta reseña en cuanto a ventas, "Images and words" de 1992. Esta obra, "Awake", es el segundo disco más importante de la banda desde un punto de vista económico alcanzando por ejemplo la certificación de "Platino" en Japón. El disco sigue el patrón de su anterior obra, con temas memorables y clásicos dentro de la banda, como "6:00", "Caught in a web", o "Lie". Es el último disco que la banda graba con el Teclista Kevin Moore, quien comunicó su abandono en plena grabación del disco haciéndose efectiva tras el final del proceso de grabación, y sería sustituido por Derek Sherinian a partir de ese instante, quien tuvo que aprender todo el repertorio en unas pocas semanas para poder comenzar a girar para presentar la nueva obra en directo. En cuanto a criticas, a prensa especializada en la época se repartió, cosechando la banda tanto buenas como no tan buenas críticas de su nuevo disco, siendo hoy en día considerado como uno de sus mejores discos, y como antes decía su segundo mayor éxito en ventas tras su insuperado "Images and Words" del 92, techo hasta ahora de la banda en cuanto a ventas. Quiero dejar en el blog uno de los temas que más me gustan del disco, la larga pero estupenda "Voices", tema muy típico de Dream Theater con todos los ingredientes que gustan al grupo, cambios y un fondo progresivo, una gran canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

PERFECT STRANGERS

Los virtuosos Dream Theater son una banda de sobra conocida por todos los que amamos este tipo de música. Defensores de un estilo progresivo sus creaciones pueden resultar demasiado complejas al oído no acostumbrado a su estilo con canciones que en muchas ocasiones superan ampliamente los 10 minutos y con una vocación instrumental y conceptual. Estos estadounidenses llevan tocando desde 1985 bajo el nombre de "Majesty" y cambiando su denominación a Dream Theater con la que empezaron a sacar discos de estudio en 1989. Desde entonces llevan a sus espaldas 12 discos de estudio habiendo vendido hasta 2011 más de 12 millones de copias de sus obras. Nadie puede dudar de su calidad, puedes ser más o menos fan pero es innegable su potencial. Quiero hoy volver la mirada de nuevo a su época inicial, aunque al momento al que quiero hoy referirme es una época en la que ya llevaban un cierto recorrido y un par de discos de los más vendidos y reconocidos, me estoy refiriendo al año 1995 y al EP "A change of seasons", un EP que como decía sacan tras sus exitosos "Images and words" de 1992 y "Awake" de 1994 que les hicieron conocer las mieles de la fama a nivel mundial. Es una obra que les sirve para varios propósitos, el primero para presentar en sociedad al nuevo miembro del grupo, el teclista Derek Sherinian, que sustituye a Kevin Moore que había dejado la banda en 1994, y además les sirve para dar salida a un tema de 23 minutos de largo, el fantástico "A change of seasons" que da título al EP, que era un tema que había sido compuesto al comienzo de su carrera y previsto que se incluyese en el disco "Images and words", pero que se descartó por la enorme duración de la canción. Además aprovechó la banda americana para incluir varias versiones de clásicos de grupos de culto que a ellos les gustaban como Elton John, Led Zeppelin o Deep Purple. Y es la versión de estos últimos, con el tema "Perfect Strangers", la canción que quiero dejar hoy en el blog, un tema ya de por sí increíble que con el toque Dream Theater mejora si cabe, y de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Defensores de un estilo progresivo sus creaciones pueden resultar demasiado complejas al oido no acostumbrado a su estilo con canciones que en muchas ocasiones superan ampliamente los 10 minutos y con una vocación instrumental y conceptual. Estos estadounidenses llevan tocando desde 1985 bajo el nombre de majesty y cambiando su denominación a dream theater con la que empezaron a sacar discos de estudio en 1989. Desde entonces llevan a sus espaldas 12 discos de estudio habiendo vendido hasta 2011 más de 12 millones de copias de sus obras. Nadie puede dudar de su calidad, puedes ser más o menos fan pero es inegable su potencial. He querido escoger su segundo disco, de 1992 Images and words, un clásico y uno de sus discos más "sencillos" de entender, podríamos decir que es uno de los más para todos lo públicos pues sus temas son muy directos y he escogido un tema clásico con el que abren el disco, pull me under, todo un himno de la banda. Volveremos a Dream Theater en este blog pues a lo largo de su discografía se pueden encontrar autenticas joyas que merece la pena escuchar. Dejo un enlace a youtube.
