HALL  OF  THE  MOUNTAIN  KING 

Savatage, otra banda clásica, de innegable importancia estos estadounidenses, por su obra en sí, por la época en la que la desarrollan y por la influencia dejada para otras bandas. Nos introducimos con este grupo en los campos del sonido progresivo, con esa base de heavy clásico. Formados en 1977 bajo el nombre de Metropolis USA, de las cenizas de esa banda y tras pasar también por el nombre de Avatar, desde 1983 adoptan el definitivo nombre de Savatage, y para 1987 editaban ya su cuarto LP de estudio, "Hall Of the mountain king", obra de la que hoy quierod ejar en el blog el tema que la da nombre, y del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Savatage - Handful Of Rain

HANDFUL  OF  RAIN

Vamos con otra banda clásica, importante por su trayectoria y por el momento en que desarrollan su carrera ya que hablamos de la década de los 80 y 90, momento en que se definen muchas cosas y en el que los estadounidenses Savatage aportaron su granito de arena hasta hacerse con un nombre internacional por méritos propios. Evidentemente hablamos de una banda que ha tocado todos los palos, desde del heavy power hasta su vertiente más progresiva, siempre desde el prisma de la calidad. En 1994, la banda editaba su octavo LP de estudio, "Handful of rain", y contribuian así a sobrellevar ese comienzo de la década de los 90 tan complicado para el heavy metal de concepción clásica, que sin ser exactamente el terreno compositivo de este grupo, si que se les puede meter en el grupo de bandas de siempre que tiraron del carro en esos momentos. Canciones para una vida - Savatage - Blackjack Guillotine

BLACKJACK  GUILLOTINE

 Savatage es otra de esas bandas cuya fama ha llegado a casi todos los rincones de nuestro universo metálico, un grupo que ha sabido siempre ofrecer calidad y cambiar su estilo según sus necesidades compositivas, pasando por etapas más heavy metal de la old school, por otras más progresivas y conceptuales o incluso por otras que hacían más guiños al power. Formados en 1983 han editado, a fecha de esta reseña, 11 LP's y aunque llevan sin elaborar material nuevo desde 2001, su estatus como banda no es exactamente de grupo terminado. Hoy me quiero referir a su penúltimo disco de estudio, en una onda abiertamente progresiva y conceptual, como ya hiciesen en el anterior "Dead winter dead" del 95. Con este "The Wake of Magellan" del 97 estamos ante una obra un tanto más melódica, con muchos de los rasgos de su anterior disco pero algo menos cañera. Un disco en el que destacan varias de sus canciones, una de ellas este "Blackjack Guillotine", de la que dejo hoy un enlace a youtube.

POWER  OF  THE  NIGHT


La tercera obra de estudio de los estadounidenses Savatage se llama "Power of the night". Editado en 1985 se trata de una obra que muestra un cierto cambio de registro en lo que la banda venía mostrando en sus dos primeras obras, aunque siempre siguiendo dentro de un heavy metal de corte clásico en lineas generales, sin embargo, por algún motivo, quizá también por su fichaje por una discográfica de las grandes, (Atlantic), se nota una cierta variación estilística dentro de la propia obra, con algunos guiños hard rockeros casi que maquilla más la voz grave, por entonces, de Jon Oliva, y otros más en una linea proto power, un poco a lo que hacía Judas por aquel entonces, pero destellos. El grupo estaba comandado por los hermanos Oliva, (Criss a la guitarra fallecería en 1993), y lo completaba Keith Collins al bajo y Steve Wacholz a la batería, una formación exactamente igual al de las dos obras anteriores. Comenzaba pues la banda a experimentar en otros campos sonoros, una evolución que siguieron mostrando en discos sucesivos. Este "Power of the night" es un disco bastante corto, y de pretensiones compositivas no muy enrevesadas, y aunque no sea de largo la mejor de sus obras si que demuestra una honestidad muy de la época, heavy directo.Hoy quiero dejar en el blog un tema de la obra, concretamente la canción que da título al disco, "Power of the night" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

THE EDGE OF THORNS

Savatage es una banda estadounidense que practica un heavy metal con grandes dosis progresivas y en ocasiones pinceladas de power metal. Creada en 1979 con el nombre de "Avatar", por los hermanos Jon y Criss Oliva, funcionaron con esa denominación hasta 1983, año en el que cambian el nombre de la banda por "Savatage". Han editado hasta la fecha de esta reseña 11 discos de estudio más 4 EP`s. Su producción musical comienza ya bajo el nombre de Savatage, editando su primer LP en 1983, de título "Sirens". Como decía antes, la banda fue desde el inicio impulsada por los hermanos Oliva, Jon en funciones de cantante y teclista y Criss a la guitarra. Su mayor éxito de ventas y de crítica vino seguramente en su tercera obra de estudio, "Fight for the rock", de 1986. Desde ese momento la carrera de la banda se mantuvo en un nivel muy alto, hasta su séptima obra de estudio, "Edge of Thorns", de 1993, año en el que la banda sufriría un reves brutal con la muerte de Criss Oliva a manos de un conductor borracho. Jon decidiría continuar con el grupo en honor a su hermano, pero ni la continuidad de la banda sería lo mismo, ni el nombre y la reputación de la misma permanecería al mismo nivel a pesar de editar buenas obras, y a pesar de contar con un sustituto de Criss a la guitarra de grandísimo nivel como fue Chris Caffery, (Metalium, etc). Los trabajos de Savatage se volvieron más complejos musicalmente lo que en muchas ocasiones va en detrimento del éxito entre el gran público, y todo esto terminaría desembocando en un proyecto paralelo en el que Savatage se fusiona con una gran orquesta dando lugar a grupo "Trans-siberian Orchestra", que ha editado hasta la fecha de esta reseña 5 obras de estudio más orientadas a un rock progresivo. En 2001 Savatage edita su último disco de estudio y aunque aún siguen supuestamente en activo, como por ejemplo con la edición de un recopilatorio hace pocas semanas, no hay noticias de nuevas obras como tal a corto plazo. Hoy quiero dejar en el blog una canción de su "Edge of thorns", de 1993, séptima obra de estudio como decía más arriba, y última obra con Criss Oliva a la guitarra antes de su trágica muerte, apenas unos meses tras la edición de esta obra, y además es la primera obra con un nuevo vocalista, Zak Stevens, quien tomo el relevo de Jon Oliva que se centro en los teclados en esta obra. Es un gran disco, como casi todos los de esta buena banda, y he querido dejar hoy en el blog el tema homónimo al título del disco "Edge of throns", una canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.
