SINNER

No por mucho repetirlo va a ser menos evidente, Judas Priest son una de esas piezas clave en lo que se llama heavy metal,y además deben ser considerados como uno de los pioneros entre los pioneros en el impulso de ese sonido recien nacido en los inicios de la banda, o incluso inexistente como tal. Para 1977 Judas grababa su ya tercer album de estudio, y un disco que destila heavy metal como ninguno otro hasta esa fecha lo había hecho. Después muchas bandas seguirían esa senda, que en solo un lustro desde la publicación de este album sería norma en la escena internacional, el heavy metal estaba aquí. De este tercer album de estudio, "Sin after sin" quiero dejar hoy en el blog una de sus canciones, "Sinner", un clásico de la banda y un gran tema, del que dejo hoy en el blog un enlace a youtube.

DELIVERING  THE  GOODS

Resulta casi obligatorio recurrir ciclicamente a la inmensa e importantísima discografía de Judas para ser justos con el esfuerzo global de la banda, tan influyente como creadora de sonido, y DEL sonido, es una de esas varias bandas a las que se le puede atribuir el origen mismo del heavy metal, uno de los sospechosos habituales y en este caso en concreto con muy fundadas razones. Ya para 1978 editaban su quinto LP de estudio, "Killing Machine" album que para muchos abre la puerta de la banda hacia su época más gloriosa, y para otros es la certificación de un disco heavy metal como tal por vez primera, sea como sea estamos sin duda alguna ante una obra maestra con temas enormes como por ejemplo este "Delivering the goods" del que ahora dejo un enlace a youtube.

Parece haber habido consenso general sobre el momento excelente de forma como banda de los británicos Judas Priest en el momento actual, "Invincible Shield" es la prueba palpable de ello, una obra que raya a un nivel general altísimo y que pone en cabeza una vez más a Judas de entre los más grandes, han sabido envejecer perfectamente como grupo, siendo más fieles que nadie a su concepto, sin excusas ni cambios, simplemente un disco más que no desentona en una discografía simplemente épica. BEYOND  THE  REALMS  OF  DEATH

Un motivo más para haber incluido una etiqueta extra en el blog con las bandas anteriores a 1979, y es que para entender globalmente este bendito sonido no podemos prescindir de ninguna parte de su historia, particularmente de sus comienzos, del momento en que se crea como tal. Y de esa época, si hay una banda con mayúsculas en cuanto a sonido y ya trayectoria esos fueron Judas Priest, de entre sus discos setenteros hoy quiero rescatar el cuarto, "Stained Class", de 1978, una obra de nuevo antológica, importante para el propio grupo por detalles compositivos y estéticos, como el estreno de su logo definitivo, e igualmente por lo influyente en el futuro de bandas y sonido mismo heavy metal. De los muchos temas que se pueden destacar hoy quiero hacerlo con la fantástica "Beyond the realms of death", en clave de balada - medio tiempo - o balada energética por momentos, temazo tremendo del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

En ese eterno e irresoluble debate de quien fue la primera banda en practicar heavy metal al uso, lo que no puede extrañar a nadie es que en todas las quinielas, del puñado de bandas de las que se habla siempre esté Judas Priest optando al título, y es que cuando se compara el sonido tempranero de la banda con lo que se hacía en la época no cabe ninguna duda de que el heavy metal es algo inherente al grupo. Es siempre por ello una casi obligación para cualquier metalhead mantener vivo el recuerdo de las primeras obras de la banda por su valor tanto histórico como compositivo en si mismas. El segundo trabajo del grupo llevó por título "Sad wings of destiny" de 1976, se afianzaban, despertaban miradas y comenzaban su sendero de referente para millones de bandas posteriores. Sin duda alguna el lanzamiento del nuevo LP de estudio de los británicos Judas Priest será una de las obras más esperadas de todo Marzo y seguramente de todo 2024, y es que esta banda parece eterna, importante como pocas, fundamental, decisiva en lo influyente e incombustible a juzgar por los adelantos que nos van dejando antes de que se haga efectiva su publicación oficial para este día ocho, esta semana que entra. ROCKA  ROLLA

Hablemos de nuevo de los principios, y de entre todas las bandas eternas, que las hay, Judas Priest es desde luego una de las indiscutibles candidatas a haber podido ser la primera en facturar el sonido heavy metal como tal. Hace poco leí una entrevista en la que a Halford se le hacía esa pregunta, su opinión de quien fue la primera banda en practicar un sonido heavy como tal, que si Purple, que si Sabbath, y desde luego él, barriendo para casa atribuyó a los suyos tal mérito. Como siempre digo es dificil buscar ese momento concreto en ese lugar específico, pero desde luego buscarlo en la discografía de Judas Priest podría ser una buena idea. Formados en 1970, para 1974 editaban su disco debut, "Rocka Rolla", con cierta influencia o tendencia del hard rock de la época, el heavy aún estaba en pleno proceso de nacimiento y este disco es un buen ejemplo de ello. Canciones para una vida - Judas Priest - Panic Attack

 

PANIC  ATTACK

Primer vistazo en el blog a material que se publicará oficialmente dentro de una album de 2024, concretamente se trata de la nueva obra de los britanicos Judas Priest, la leyenda, que sigue dando pasos para agrandarla, y a nivel altísimo por lo visto en este primer adelanto de su "Invincible Shield" titulado "Panic Attack". Es evidente que esta banda podría estar editando discos de nivel durante seis décadas más, no solo son de los más longevos, sino que además son de los que más alto nivel medio han mantenido a lo largo de su eterna carrera. Cuando surge la eterna discusión de que banda es mejor dentro de las grandísimas, si Maiden o Judas, yo siempre digo lo mismo, Maiden ha teloneado a Judas, y no al revés, cuando nació Maiden Judas ya llevaba un buen puñado de LP's, y creo que en esta parte final de la carrera de ambos Judas ha sabido ser más fiel, más directo, más atractivo para los fans. Canciones para una vida - Judas Priest - Eat Me Alive

 

EAT  ME  ALIVE

Hablamos una vez más de uno de los mejores momentos del heavy metal en general, y de esta banda en particular, y al referirnos a esta banda en concreto nos acercamos mucho a lo que debería ser la definición casi perfecta del heavy metal como sonido, así pues, "Defenders of the faith" de Judas Priest, de 1984, debería contener algunos de los mejores temas de la historia, y desde luego alguno de ellos lo será, varios ya han sido mencionados en el blog, y hoy traigo uno de los que muchos dejan fuera, quizá de los que paraotros, formando parte de la segunda mitad de la obra, bajan el nivel de la misma para no poder considerar a "Defenders of the faith" como su mejor disco. Por ello mismo, quiero hoy traer este tema al blog, pues "Eat me alive" no deja de ser un temazo, una demostración del nivelón de los británicos que son capaces de componer temas a menor nivel, o de menor aceptación en una obra y que dichos temas resulten compositivamente inalcanzables para muchas bandas, es lo que tienen los grandes entre los grandes. Hay obras y bandas cuya fama merecida, cuya sola mención es sinónimo de éxito, de reconocimiento, de heavy metal en sí mismo, y algunos, como el caso de esta banda y obra, Judas Priest y su "British Steel" que lo son aún más si cabe, por el disco en sí, por la trayectoria de la banda, por el momento histórico en si mismo y del grupo, por su capacidad de influencia en otros gigantes o desconocidos, en general por un cúmulo de circunstancias que hacen de este particular uno de los hitos metálicos de la historia de nuestra música. Canciones para una vida - Judas Priest - Night Crawler

 

NIGHT  CRAWLER

El décimo tercer LP de los británicos Judas Priest, "Painkiller" de 1990 es una de esas obras míticas, uno de esos momentos que rayan a una extraordinaria altura para permanecer por méritos propios para siempre como uno de esos discos fundamentales dentro del heavy metal. Para aquel momento, la banda había vivido sus momentos posiblemente más gloriosos de su historia, al menos los más míticos, y encaraban la década de cambios de los 90 con una obra que alcanzó seguramente las cotas más altas y salvajes dentro de lo que podría considerarse como un heavy metal más potente para la banda hablando como discos en su conjunto. Es curioso que se diese ese particular justo como un canto de cisne en lo referente a lo que le sucedería al sonido heavy clásico en adelante, esa década de los 90 que diversificó y evolucionó el nicho natural del heavy clásico hacia otras cosas, haciendolo tambalearse y siendo sustentado por tan solo un puñado de bandas. El caso es que "Painkiller" es una obra completa, un disco que destacar en su conjunto y del que casi cualquiera de sus temas es susceptible de ser destacado, como por ejemplo el monumental "Night Crawler" que hoy dejo en el blog y del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Otro grupo más de esos a los que habría que pasarse horas añadiendo adjetivos que ensalzasen su figura son Judas Priest, un grupo de los pocos elegidos a los que se podría incluso atribuir la paternidad del propio heavy metal, siendo uno de esos que ya contaban con una extensa discografía cuando bandas del calibre de Iron Maiden comenzaban a dar sus primeros pasos, pocos pueden presumir de haber llevado a Iron Maiden como teloneros en una gira, ellos si pueden hacerlo. La historia de la banda no ha estado exenta de polémicas, de salidas y retornos de miembros con mayúsculas dentro de la banda, de épocas de descanso y retornos imponentes, y de una extensa discografía con la que pueden presumir de obras legendarias e influyentes, aunque también de otras menos afortunadas o generadoras de críticas. Hoy quiero dejar en el blog el artwork de una de esa obras con mayúsculas no solo dentro de su discografía sino dentro del propio heavy metal en general, "Painkiller" de 1990, un discazo de inicio a fin, del que sobra toda presentación, Para la ocasión la banda cambiaba a su batería, Dave Holland por Scott Travis, y Don Airey pondría los teclados en la canción "A touch of evil". El trabajo artísico de la portada, una de las reconocidas y reconocibles por excelencia en esto del heavy metal estuvo a cargo del británico Mark Wilkinson, quien ha demostrado muchas veces su buen hacer para bandas del calibre de Iron Maiden, (por ejemplo su reciente "Senjutsu" de este 2021), Bloodbound, Highland Glory, o Megadeth por citar los nombres más "grandes". Hablar de grandes bandas es hacerlo de un valor seguro, y de entre ellas, una de las más respetadas por méritos propios dentro del heavy metal, y seguramente una de las que más peso tienen en lo que a influencia se refiere es Judas Priest, unos britanicos que modelaron el camino para muchos otros de los que se consideran grandes, de hecho, ¿cuantas bandas pueden presumir de que nada menos que Iron Maiden les teloneasen?, Judas pueden. Es además Judas un grupo que está en absoluta forma compositiva como demostró en 2018 con su "Firepower", magnífico album del que ya he hablado por aquí. El caso es que mirar a su discografía es un trabajo grande a la hora de tener que escoger, pero grato con la certeza de casi no poder equivocarse, y uno de esos grandes albumes de la banda es este "Defenders of the faith" de 1984 del que hoy quiero volver a dejar en el blog una canción, hoy "Rock Hard ride free", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube, Judas Priest, la definición del heavy metal.

DEVIL'S  CHILD

Otro buen momento para rebuscar entre los grandes éxitos de una de las bandas con mayúsculas en esto del heavy metal, uno de los maestros como es Judas Priest. Y que mejor en estos días en que el bueno de Rob Halford saca material en solitario en forma de recopilatorio personal de canciones navideñas para recurrir a uno de los discos mejores de esto de la música metálica como fue "Screaming for Vengeance" de 1982, el que hacía ya el noveno disco de estudio de la banda, (ahí es nada), y uno de sus momentos cumbre en la historia del grupo, un disco al que ya he recurrido en más de una ocasión en el blog, y al que seguiré recurriendo hasta que se agoten sus canciones pues cada tema merece la pena. hoy dejo la canción que cierra la obra, "Devil's Child", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

SPECTRE

Poco que añadir a lo dicho anteriormente sobre la obra o la banda, que por méritos propios se ha colocado en ese puesto que le corresponde entre los más altos de los más altos dentro de esto del heavy metal. Tan solo dejar otro de los temas que han hecho de este álbum, "Firepower" uno de los mejores para muchas publicaciones de todo 2018. El hecho de ser ya la cuarta canción de esa obra que dejo en el blog no puede sino confirmar que yo igualmente opino que es uno de los mejores disco del pasado año, y valga como ejemplo pues este otro botón, "Spectre", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube de su clip oficial. Judas Priest, que más se puede decir.

NEVER  THE  HEROES


 Al hacer el balance total de los mejores discos del pasado 2018, en no pocas quinielas aparece la banda Judas Priest con su último y (Aquí viene lo meritorio), décimo noveno disco de estudio de la banda, con sus cinco décadas encima de los escenarios, yendo más allá de lo propiamente musical para alcanzar unas cotas al alcance de pocas pocas muy poquitas bandas, Si a ello le añadimos el valor objetivo de una obra como "Firepower" no es de extrañar que este disco figure entre los mejores de todo 2018. Desde luego me parece merecido tal honor y por ello quiero hoy dejar en el blog otro de los temas pertenecientes a este último, hasta la fecha de esta reseña, disco editado por la banda, recurriendo hoy a la canción, "Never The Heroes", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube. Judas Priest, poco más que añadir.

LOVE  BITES

Parece que la cosa va de clásicos esta semana, y desde luego si vamos a hablar de bandas clásicas jamás debe faltar Judas en la lista. Otro de esos grupos. como ayer mismo decía de Iron Maiden, que siempre están a la altura, de una importancia absoluta en la historia del heavy metal, uno de los pioneros entre los pioneros y que, a juzgar por su último trabajo editado hace solo unos meses, siguen teniendo mucho que ofrecer a pesar de los años que llevan en activo. De nuevo quiero hoy recuperar uno de sus temas clásicos, hoy una canción de su ya décimo LP, a pesar de estar tan solo hablando del año 84, pero es que estos tíos llevan en lo alto desde siempre. "Defenders of the faith", un disco que habla por si mismo, dentro del marco de su propia discografía, tanto como del heavy metal en general, y del que hoy quiero dejar la canción "Love Bites", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube. Canciones para una vida - Judas Priest - Cathedral Spires

CATHEDRAL  SPIRES

 "Jugulator" es un disco particular dentro de la discografía de Judas Priest, y es particular por lo que significa ser el primero de los dos únicos discos de la banda sin el icónico vocalista Rob Halford a los mandos. Otro hecho a tener en cuenta es que este disco, que supone el décimo curto en la historia de la banda era el sucesor del simplemente histórico "Painkiller", prácticamente insuperable. Siempre han existido ciertos paralelísmos entre Iron Maiden Y Judas Priest, por la grandeza de las bandas, su aplastante influjo sobre toda la escena metálica, y en esto de la ida del vocalista icónico de la banda durante una temporada también se puede encontrar un punto de unión. Desde luego siempre he pensado que la sustitución del cantante en Judas fue mucho más acertada que en Maiden, habiendo por ejemplo en este "Jugulator" de 1997 unas cuantas canciones cantadas por Tim "Ripper" Owens que me agradan mucho. Canciones para una vida - Judas Priest - Sea Of Red

SEA  OF  RED

Un nuevo repaso al último trabajo editado de Judas, una de las bandas míticas dentro del heavy metal por derecho propio, me lleva a señalar otra de las señas de identidad de esta magnífica banda que ya va acercándose a los 50 años de historia a sus espaldas, un dato que en si mismo es ya demoledor, máxime viendo el nivel musical que mantienen a juzgar por este último trabajo, el décimo noveno de la historia de la banda. Esa otra seña de identidad a la que me refiero son sus baladas y medios tiempos, y es que siempre han tenido estos británicos ese toque especial a la hora de diseñar este tipo de temas también, y un gran ejemplo puede personificarse en este tema de su "Firepower" de 2018, "Sea Of red", una balada "made in Judas", con ese final lleno de fuerza en el que la guitarra de Glen Tipton transmite todo el sentimiento de una manera increíble. Siempre que una banda tan legendaria siga a pesar de los años siendo fiel a si misma y a lo que la ha hecho grande merecerá la pena, otro ejemplo es la última obra de Judas, sin duda no será el mejor de sus discos, pero al final tampoco esto va solo de eso, y siempre uno puede tropezarse con un puñado de minutos llenos de calidad y sentimiento que te llegue dentro, como por ejemplo este "Sea Of red" del que dejo un enlace a yotube.

Canciones para una vida - Judas Priest - Hard As Iron

HARD  AS  IRON

Una nueva referencia a una obra como "Ram it dawn", de los británicos Judas Priest, un disco al que ya me he referido en varias ocasiones en el blog y del que hoy quiero extraer otro de sus temas justo en este momento en el que estamos a al espera de la salida de su última obra. Fácil es hablar de un disco de esta magnitud, a pesar de no ser la más aclamada de entre sus obras, si que es una de esas ocasiones en que la banda responde a un supuesto declive de su potencial como fue su anterior producción "Turbo" que cosechó tanta crítica por una supuesta relajación en su estilo, algo que en este "Ram it dawn" del 88 y sobre todo en su siguiente "Painkiller" del 90 quedaba fuera de toda duda.
