Cutty Sark - Hardrock Power - Canciones Para Una Vida

HARDROCK POWER 

Esta es una de esas típicas bandas que mirando solo el aspecto de sus portadas ochenteras te imaginas algo demasiado cutrillo para prestarle atención, sin embargo, en este tipo de ocasiones, muchas veces la cutrez de las portadas en inversamente proporcional a lo interesante de la propuesta compositiva, este era el caso de los germanos Cutty Sark, grupo que mostró su potencial a comienzos de los ochenta en un par de LP's antes de diluirse hasta finales de los 90 en que editan su tercera y última obra de estudio. La propuesta es un heavy metal de la vieja escuela. Formados en 1979 su actividad más reseñable dura hasta 1987 en que editan los citados dos primeros LP's, (84 y 85) a los que precedieron su EP de presentación "Hardrock Power", de 1983, y del que quiero dejar hoy en el blog el tema que le daba nombre y del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Manowar - March For Revenge - Canciones Para Una Vida

MARCH  FOR  REVENGE  (BY THE SOLDIERS OF DEATH) 

Nueva visita al material clásico de los ultra heavys Manowar, una banda rodeada siempre de polémica, tan amados como odidados pero sin duda alguna poseedores de su propia porción de historia dentro del heavy metal. Volviendo la cabeza de nuevo a la parte inicial de su carrera quiero recuperar hoy otra de las canciones de su segundo LP de estudio "Into glory ride", obra de confirmación de la banda, fresco para la época, definiendo el sonido luego tan imitado con ese trasfondo ultra heavy, auténticamente macarrilla, pero honesto desde esa perspectiva compositiva sin arreglos. Scarlet - She Taste Like Metal - Canciones Para Una Vida

SHE  TASTE  LIKE  METAL 

Los estadounidenses Scarlet son una banda que centro su sonido en el hard 'n heavy, muy de la época de mediados de los ochenta en la que comienzan a desarrollar su carrera. Es igualmente una de esas bandas que en cierto momento desaparecen de la escena, en un paréntesis compositivo de 20 años, (1985 a 2005), tres LP's son los publicados por la banda (1983, 85 y 2005) a los que añadir su EP inicial de 1982. Y ya que hoy vamos de clásicos, vamos con otro más, como disco, banda y canción, los archiconocidos a nivel planetario Metallica, como han cambiado estos chicos, que pasada escuchar este su debut, un tema que nos ha acompañado a muchos a lo largo de nuestra vida y que sin duda es una de sus mejores obras en su conjunto, corria el año 1983 y estos también abrían camino en lo suyo, y con este discazo en concreto más si cabe, por la época y por las composiciones sin descartes, que vamos a decir a estas alturas de la banda y de la obra, así que sin más dejo en el blog el temazo "The Four horsemen" del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Manilla Road - The Riddle Master - Canciones Para Una Vida

THE  RIDDLE  MASTER 

Otra banda clásica de nuevo en el blog, los estadounidenses Manilla Road, desde los más profundos terrenos underground en sus comienzos, con el inicio de la década de los ochenta, abriendo tendencia, pero con poco o nulo reconocimiento en su momento, se trataba de un sonido muy novedoso para la época, ese aspecto épico creado con guitarra, sin adorno alguno, más allá de las narraciones, es esencia de heavy metal clásico, y tan solo el tiempo les está colocando en el importante puesto que merecen dentro de la historia del heavy metal. Activos hasta 2028 en que su cantante y guitarrista Mark Shelton muere, la banda publica 18 LP's de estudio, otro dato a tener muy en cuenta, y de su material ochentero quiero rescatar hoy el disco "Crystal Logic" de 1983, tercer LP de su discografía y del que dejo hoy en el blog su canción "The riddle master", cocinado a fuego medio pero con fuerza y todo el sabor metálico de la banda, una canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Aorta - Blood Pressure

BLOOD  PRESSURE

Escena germana, años ochenta, otra banda más que lo intentaba, en este caso bajo el nombre de Aorta, que curiosamente ha sido un nombre escogido por varias bandas para desarrollar una carrera o al menos intentarlo. En el caso de estos Aorta hablamos de un hard 'n heavy muy ochentero, una vez más hablamos de un grupo que solo editó un único LP de estudio, absolutamente digno de mención, muy prometedor de una hipotética larga y digna carrera que nunca se dio, y en este caso editaron un total de doce canciones de entre las que dejo el tema que da nombre a la obra de 1983 "Blood Pressure" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Crossfire - See You In Hell

 

SEE  YOU  IN  HELL

La enésima demostración de que el fenómeno del heavy metal era desde el inicio bastante global, a pesar de que siempre se haya vendido como algo de sobre todo un par o tres de escenas, encabezadas por los Británicos y los estadounidenses y en menor medida después por los germanos, lo cierto es que muchas otras escenas "menores" desarrollaron bandas de primer nivel aunque no siempre, o de hecho muy pocas veces reconocidas. Hablamos de los ochenta, como no, y hoy vuelvo la mirada otra vez hacia la la escena belga para rescatar a otra banda en clave de heavy metal, en este caso a "Crossfire", quienes permanecieron en activo entre 1980 y 1987, publicando solo dos LP's que fueron suficientes para mostrar el innegable potencial a pesar del poco éxito internacional cosechado. En 1983 debutan con "See you in hell", del que hoy quiero dejar en el blog el tema que da nombre a la obra, heavy metal de la vieja escuela, canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Virgin Steele - Go Down Fighting

 

GO  DOWN  FIGHTING

Una de las muchas cosas que pueden echarse de menos de la escena ochentera, es el concepto de componer discos de calidad, mucho material en poco tiempo, era común que las bandas editasen un LP por año sin que se notase aparentemente en la calidad final del producto, además las bandas no se cortaban en editar singles ni Ep's en el mismo año en que editaban un LP, y de esa manera uno siempre encontraba material que comprar sin esperar largos años entre obra y obra de sus heroes metálicos. En 1983, por ejemplo, los estadounidenses Virgin Steele editaban un LP, "Guardians of the flame", un single, "A cry in the night" con un tema no incluido en el citado LP, y el EP "Wait for the night", y además en 1982 habían editado su debut . Sin duda era otro concepto, y en ocasiones ese espíritu se echa de menos. Hoy quiero dejar en el blog uno de los temas de este citado EP de cuatro temas, "Wait for the night", concretamente "Go down fighting" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Chasar - Visions Of Time

 

VISIONS  OF  TIME

Sigamos con la enormemente fertil escena británica de los ochenta, sobre todo de las bandas que escogieron ese estilo de heavy metal por entonces novedoso y que se englobaron en el famoso movimiento de la NWOBHM. Hoy traigo al blog a otra banda de las que solo editaron una obra, "Chasar", con el mismo título en principio en 1983 en que la publican y que curiosamente en 1987, bajo el título de "Gypsy roller" volvieron a publicar exactamente con los mismos temas. El grupo fue originario de Escocia y desde 2009 se supone que han retornado a la actividad, aunque de momento sin nigún nuevo material editado, a fecha de esta reseña. Canciones para una vida Iron Maiden - The Trooper

 

THE  TROOPER

Como siempre ocurre en estos casos, (Iron Maiden, década de los ochenta), solo con pensar en los debates manidos, en los argumentos repetidos y las disputas de cuando eran mejores o peores, de desde cuando se echaron a perder o no, la verdad es que a uno se le quitan las ganas, pero más allá del nombre, de su historia, de su innegable capacidad para generar opiniones, a favor o no, de todo eso que ya hemos dicho y leido tantas veces, Maiden es, fue y será siempre eso, Maiden, y ese es un valor considero que suficiente para muchas cosas, si además le acompañan los argumentos puramente conpositivos, como en esta su cuarta obra de estudio, "Piece of mind", 1983, la verdad es que lo demás sobra, que te gusta, genial, que no, igualmente respetable, hoy dejo otro ejemplo de buen hacer, mejor vender, y argumento para mantenerse arriba en el futuro, temas como este son base para directos, exito casi eterno, asegurado, y cuando se repite a lo largo de una discografía surgen mitos más que bandas, mitos como Iron Maiden, hoy "The Trooper" uno de esos singles por antonomasia, del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Ritual - Into The Night

 

INTO  THE  NIGHT

Hoy otro ejemplo de lo que decía en la anterior entrada del blog referente a la riqueza del movimiento de la NWOBHM, que dejo tal volumen de bandas poniendo su granito de arena que es relativamente sencillo encontrarse con grupos absolutamente desconocidos al tiempo que tremendamente einteresantes por su potencial. Como digo otro buen ejemplo fueron "Ritual", también con un nombre bastante recurrente para muchas bandas que lo escogieron como estandarte, estos para crear ese heavy metal de características clásicas en el momento en que ese sonido era tendencia y más auténtico que nunca. Se forman en 1973 pero hasta una década más tarde no editan su primer material de estudio. después otro parón de 10 años para editar en 1993 su segundo y último LP antes de dejarlo. Canciones para una vida - Def Leppard - Rock Rock Till' You Drop

 

ROCK  ROCK  TILL'  YOU  DROP

Es siempre una lástima que bandas o artistas que al menos en parte le deban su buen nombre musical al heavy metal, terminen por renegar de esa parte de su carrera, de su historia, una cosa es que la evolución compositiva les aleje de sus orígenes, como es el caso de estos británicos, y otra renegar. Los tres primeros discos entre 1980 y 1983 tienen un concepto mucho más guitarrero, siempre en ese límite entre el hard rock y el heavy, El tercer LP, "Pyromania" de 1983, fue un gran disco, bastante guitarrero, con el condimento siempre "Def Leppard" de single facilote y enganchón, pero de vocación mas hard 'n heavy, como sus otras dos primeras obras. Canciones para una vida - Motley Crue - Bastard

 

BASTARD

Hablemos hoy de la vertiente americana de los clásicos de toda la vida, de ese tipo de benadas que han alcanzado un nivel mitologico superior y han sido indudable influencia sobre otras bandas, uno de esos grupos que suenan a gentes del metal al igual que a otros ajenos a él, se trata de Motley Crue, la banda angelina que para muchos fue pionera y precursora del sonido glam, aunque en sus inicios fuese un grupo que bordeaba el hard 'n heavy del que tantas veces he hablado en el blog y que tanto disfruto al tener elementos de ambos subgéneros, el hard rock y el heavy metal, que tantas bandas dió en la dorada década de los ochenta. Hoy quiero volver la mirada a sus comienzos, los que marcaron tanto su auge, los momentos más rockeros, más metálicos, más heavys en definitiva, sus primeros dos LP's, entre 1981 y 1983, y concretamente su segundo esfuerzo compositivo, "Shout At The devil" de 1983, disco del que hoy dejo en el blog el tema "Bastard", del que dejo un enlace a Youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Fastway - We Become One

 

WE  BECOME  ONE

Fastway es una de esas bandas que en los ochenta bordearon más de una vez el límite en ocasiones difuso entre el hard rock y el heavy metal, aunque se decantaron más en general por el primero de ambos géneros, y se trata además de una de esas bandas creadas a partir de la union de exmiembros de otras, en este caso Eddie Clarke "Fast", guitarrista ex de Motorhead y el bajista Pete Way, ex de UFO, el nombre de la banda queda pues evidenciado juntando el apodo de uno con el apellido de otro. Curiosamente Pete Way aparece en los créditos de la obra cuando en realidad desde el inicio dejó el proyecto al darle el destino la oportunidad de tocar con Ozzy. La banda se ha mantenido en activo hasta 2018 a través de tres épocas, la más genuina la primera, (como suele suceder en estos casos), entre 1982 y 1991, en la que editan seis de sus siete LP's de estudio, el primero de ellos de 1983, "Fastway" del que hoy quiero dejar en el blog uno de sus temas más cercanos al heavy metal, "We become One", y del que hoy dejo un enlace a youtube.

JUST  ANOTHER  MAN

2022 ha sido testigo de la nueva obra de estudio de los británicos "Quartz", aunque reconozco que no he tenido aún el momento de ponerme con el disco, pero siendo un grupo de tradición y larga aunque intermitente trayectoria seguro que antes o después lo haré. Los inicios de su carrera hunden sus raices en el despertar de la NWOBHM, a pesar de ser incluso anteriores en su creación, aunque en parte bajo el nombre de "Bandy Legs". Hablamos de heavy metal de corte clásico, como digo incluidos en el movimiento de la NWOBHM. su tercer LP de estudio y el que marcó su separación en 1983 fue  "Against All Odds" y de dicha obra quiero dejar en el blog hoy una de sus canciones, en concreto "Just Another Man" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Heavy Load - Singing Swords

 

SINGING  SWORDS

Además de la utilidad de caracter digamos "académico" de rebuscar en las raices de nuestro sonido, está el gustazo puramente musical de disfrutar de las ideas primigénias que muchas bandas, injustamente olvidadas llevaban a la práctica, abriendo sendas luego muy transitadas, en lo que fue el nacimiento del heavy metal original. Muchas escenas, presididas por supuesto por la británica o la americana, pero sin dejar de lado otras, que ya en aquellos años eran enormemente productivas, como por ejemplo la sueca que hoy nos ocupa, y en aquellos años, en la citada escena, bandas como Heavy load, ponían su granito de arena, abrian horizontes épicos, que no llegaban siempre a todos los oidos que deberían, y de haberlo hecho así, otro gallo les hubiera cantado, sin duda, ya que calidad, energía, originalidad, e ilusión tenían para haber alcanzado mayores cotas de popularidad. Hoy traigo otro enorme ejemplo de su buen hacer, su tercer LP de estudio, "Stronger than evil" de 1983, ya el tercero en el 83, eso da otro punto claro de espíritu pionero. De este gran disco dejo hoy como ejemplo su tema "Singing Swords", muchos de sus rasgos se muestran aquí, una canción de la que dejo hoy un enlace a youtube. Merece siempre la pena meter la nariz en la historia, siempre ayuda a entenderlo todo desde una perspectiva más completa, y justa, también en la música.

Canciones para una vida - Triumph - Too Much Thinking

 

TOO  MUCH  THINKING

Creo que una de las grandes cosas para que la década de los ochenta llegase a ser el mito que es hoy en día y que seguirá siendo en lo que al sonido heavy metal se refiere, es esa tendencia natural a que todas las bandas del mundillo tratasen de acercarse al citado sonido de una manera u otra, ya sea por arriba o por abajo, desde el hard rock o hacia el thrash, y el proto power, o proto black, al final siempre había una gran base heavy que hermanaba mucho esos variopintos sonidos y quizá por eso sean tan reconocibles las bandas de esa década más allá de la producción acorde a los tiempos que corrian. Hoy quiero acercarme al sonido más hard' n heavy encarnado en los canadienses "Triumph", una vez más una banda que a pesar del cartel, de la relativa fama no ha gozado del reconocimiento necesario en virtud a su carrera y calidad. 10 LP's de estudio entre 1976 y 1992 hablan de una carrera centrada en ese arco compositivo entre el heavy metal y el AOR pasando por el hard rock, en su mayor parte. Quizá la época más heavy se corresponda a los inicios de la década de los 80 donde para muchos dieron lo mejor de sí. Su sexto album de estudio de llama "Never Surrender", quizá no sea el más reconocido de su carrera, editado en 1983, pero es igualmente un ejemplo de buen hacer como en el tema que dejo hoy en el blog perteneciente a esta obra, "Too much thinking", para abrir el disco, un tema del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Bitches Sin - Ice Angels

 

ICE  ANGELS

Otro caso de banda nacida en el movimiento de la NWOBHM, por lo tanto británicos, y otro grupo que ha tenido más bien poca repercusión en la escena internacional. Se trata de un grupo que ha dilatado su actividad a lo largo del tiempo, en varias épocas, incluyendo un cambio de nombre, ("Flashpoint"), entre 1988 y 2008, para retomar su nombre original, "Bitches Sin", desde 2008 hasta hoy. Formados en 1980, su discografía resulta bastante escasa teniendo en cuenta el gran periodo de tiempo en activo, así han editado 3 LP's y 2 EP's como Bitches Sin a los que podríamos sumar sus 3 LP's más 1 EP como Flashpoint. Hablamos de Heavy metal, muy en la onda NWOBHM sobre todo al inicio de su carrera. El patrón compositivo no deja nada que desear comparado con otras bandas coetaneas con mayor reconocimiento pero aquí, como siempre, entran otros factores a veces dificiles de entender. El caso es que hoy quiero dejar en el blog uno de los temas que componen su primer EP, de título "No more chances" de 1983, editado tras su debut de 1982, "Predator" en forma de LP. Canciones para una vida - Bodine - Shout

 

SHOUT

Los holandeses "Bodine" fueron otra de esas bandas que en la década de los ochenta tuvieron una breve carrera musical que les llevó a publicar tres LP's de estudio antes de su separación definitiva. Su periodo de actividad abarcó desde 1978 hasta 1984 y como particularidad de estre sus componentes destaca la figura de Arjen Lucassen, quien posteriormente pasaría por la banda "Vengeance" para después emprender su carrera en solitario bajo el nombre de Ayreon. Hablar de Bodine es hacerlo de un sonido a medio camino entre el heavy metal y el hard rock, un prototípico hard'n heavy ochentero, más de la escuela europea, y en esos años la cantera holandesa gozaba de una buena salud en una onda un tanto germana. El tercero de los LP's del grupo llevó por título "Three times running", publicado en 1983 y que terminaría por ser el punto y final de esta aventura que dejó grandes momentos para los nostalgicos del sonido clásico, de dicha obra dejo hoy en el blog uno de los temas que la componen, en concreto el single de la misma, "Shout", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Tsunami - The Runaround

 

THE  RUNAROUND

Otra banda más prototípica de la década de los ochenta, dentro del sonido clásico del heavy metal, esta en concreto con una cierta tendencia al hard n heavy, y de la escuela estadounidense. Se trata de "Tsunami" que desarrollo su actividad en la citada década a pesar de una breve incursión en la década de los 2000 que no fue más allá de un tercer LP. Así pues, el grueso de su obra, (dos LP's) lo editan entre 1983 y 1990, como digo con un concepto heavy hard muy de esos años, y que puede darnos ciertas reminiscencias sobre todo en lo vocal a Axxis, y en lo compositivo pueden tener algo de Krokus, toques "scorpions" salvando las distancias, pero que dan esa imagen mental del potencial una vez más de otra banda de aquellos años que no llegó apenas a asomar la cabeza. Su primer LP de título homónimo al nombre de la banda se publica en 1983, una obra que gustará a los amantes del sonido clásico del heavy metal de toda la vida, y del que hoy dejo en el blog la canción "The Runaround" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.
