Iron Maiden - Prowler - Canciones Para Una Vida

Vamos de nuevo con uno de los grupos míticos entre los míticos, los eternos Iron Maiden, y vamos hoy a repasar sus mismos comienzos, a finales muy finales de los setenta cuando en noviembre de 1979 publican su primer material en forma de demo, y ya desde ese mismo momento dejaron bien claro que no iban a ser una banda más, en absoluto, llegaban para hacerse los dueños de todo, y así lo hicieron. La citada demo "The soundhouse tapes" contenía tres canciones, dos de las cuales se incluirían al año siguiente en su primer LP, una de ellas, "prowler" es la que dejo hoy en el blog como testigo y contribución al heavy setentero que desembocaría sobre todo en la NWOBHM y a nivel global en el heavy metal de los ochenta.

Vamos de nuevo con un disco icónico, de esos que simplemente tienen el beneplácito de toda la comunidad metálica, Iron Maiden The Number Of The Beast, primera obra de los británicos con Dickinson a la voz y sin duda punto definitivo de explosión de la banda a nivel internacional como mito en vida, estatus que gracias a obras como esta hoy en día poseen. Y que mejor canción para hoy que la que da nombre a la obra, "The number of the beast", indiscutiblemente considerado como uno de esos temas imprescindibles de la historia del heavy metal, y no por ser una de esas canciones más machacadas por todos deja de ser mejor o más efectiva, creo que es algo general que a pesar de ello cuando la escuchas algo se te sigue encendiendo por dentro, canción fundamental de la que dejo hoy en el blog un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Iron Maiden - Sign Of The Cross

SIGN  OF  THE  CROSS

Hoy traigo al blog uno de esos discos de los que todo el mundo tiene una opinión, es una obra que claramente separa épocas en una banda y si añadimos que esa banda es la banda entra las bandas metálicas, es decir Iron Maiden, pues claro, siempre todo el mundo ha opinado y lo hará con mayor o menor justicia. Yo solo quiero hoy intentar abordar la obra desde un punto de vista lo más aséptico posible, constatando hechos más que opiniones. El primer hecho innegable es la salida de Dickinson en 1993 de Maiden y la llegada de un nuevo vocalista a la banda para esta obra, Blaze Bayley, como mínimo un tío valiente para meterse en esos zapatos. Otro hecho es la época, hablamos de ese momento de los noventa en que todo seguía cambiando en la escena metálica, sobre todo si enfocabas tu sonido al sonido heavy metal clásico. Otra cuestión era crear un sucesor para "Fear of the dark", y mostrar la senda que la banda tomaría en adelante ya que cada vez más criticados por los seguidores de siempre el grupo sentía seguramente esa presión. Además las composiciones se veían afectadas por el estado de ánimo de Steve Harris que atravesaba por un divorcio. Todo ello puede enmarcar un poco tanto a la obra en sí, desde la composición más oscura, hasta estéticamente la portada sin un Eddie clásico digamos, un Eddie de Derek Riggs. Pero lo que es innegable, y en este punto estamos entrando en lo opinable, es que la obra tiene momentos muy destacables, sin ir más lejos el tema que la abre, "Sign of the cross", y del que dejo hoy en el blog un enlace a youtube.

Cnaciones para una vida - Iron Maiden - Drifter

 

DRIFTER

Como me gusta esta obra de los inmensos Maiden, a nivel personal fue el primer material del grupo que cayó en mis manos, y eso marca, sin duda, pero tratando de ver las cosas objetivamente en 1981, años de este "Killers", los Maiden estaban en ese punto especial, con la experiencia de su debut a sus espaldas, pero con el hambre absoluto de quienes están empezando, sin haber llegado a ser aún nada más que una promesa que se realizaba, las virtudes mostradas en esta obra son todas, incluso la impresionante interpretación de Di Ano a la voz, eclipsado después en dotes innatas por Dickinson, pero con ese toque tan especial, tan honesto que queda perfecto en el album, siempre he dicho que prefiero sus dos primeros discos con DiAno que si los hubieran regrabado con Dickinson, este Killers es algo absolutamente especial. Otro ejemplo, el temazo que cierra la obra, "Drifter" y de la que dejo hoy un enlace a youtube.

Como siempre ocurre en estos casos, (Iron Maiden, década de los ochenta), solo con pensar en los debates manidos, en los argumentos repetidos y las disputas de cuando eran mejores o peores, de desde cuando se echaron a perder o no, la verdad es que a uno se le quitan las ganas, pero más allá del nombre, de su historia, de su innegable capacidad para generar opiniones, a favor o no, de todo eso que ya hemos dicho y leido tantas veces, Maiden es, fue y será siempre eso, Maiden, y ese es un valor considero que suficiente para muchas cosas, si además le acompañan los argumentos puramente conpositivos, como en esta su cuarta obra de estudio, "Piece of mind", 1983, la verdad es que lo demás sobra, que te gusta, genial, que no, igualmente respetable, hoy dejo otro ejemplo de buen hacer, mejor vender, y argumento para mantenerse arriba en el futuro, temas como este son base para directos, exito casi eterno, asegurado, y cuando se repite a lo largo de una discografía surgen mitos más que bandas, mitos como Iron Maiden, hoy "The Trooper" uno de esos singles por antonomasia, del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

FEAR  OF  THE  DARK

No se cansa uno, como no podía ser de otra manera, de repasar la obra de los mitos vivos Iron Maiden, y cuanto más se retrotrae uno en su historia mayores himnos y momentos históricos encuentra, es como una ley en esta banda. El caso es que casi al azar, si señalas una obra de esta banda sin miedo a equivocarte encontraras motivos para venerarla, y tampoco hay por qué recurrir siempre a la década de los ochenta, (aunque si uno lo hace seguro más aún que no se equivocará), sino que también en otros momentos de su historia vemos momentos épicos. Hoy quiero recurrir a la segunda de las obras de los 90, "Fear of the dark", de 1992, en un momento en que Maiden cambiaba, el último LP con Martin Birch a la producción, a sus espaldas todo lo construido por Maiden en los 80, su etapa más mítica. Dickinson a punto de dejar la banda para intentarlo en solitario, primer LP con Gers a la guitarra dandole un aire más hard, más americano, sin destrozos eso sí. Un año el 92 en plena dificultad para el heavy metal como se había entendido hasta el momento, más bien hasta finales de los 80, y ahí seguian empujando algunos, Maiden entre ellos, con este "Fear of the dark", el primer clásico coetaneo para una segunda ola de fans de la doncella, lleno de grandes temas como el que da nombre a la obra, cancionaza de la que hoy dejo un enlace a youtube.

MOTHER  RUSSIA

El cambio de década trajo en general un cambio de guión en el significado de lo que era el heavy metal en general, apareciendo definitivamente otras concepciones metálicas que llenaban nuevos huecos vacíos y que variaban y diversificaban el sonido casi al capricho para cada oyente. Iron Maiden no sería una excepción, y la década de los noventa vería un cambio de su concepción compositiva, haría tambalearse a la doncella con la salida de Dickinson y se volvería a asentar en el trono con su posterior retorno y su indudable don musical que jamás perdió, pero, la dorada época ochentera, el sonido prototípico que les hizo enormes se diluia hacia otro concepto más complejo, menos directo, a pesar de que las dos primeras obras de estos 90 sigan aúnbastante en la línea más grande de los mejores Maiden. "No prayer for the dying" supone el octavo LP del mito, una gran obra en su conjunto y llena de himnos maidenianos presentados en sus directos. IRON MAIDEN  -  THE  NUMBER  OF  THE  BEAST  -  (1982)

 

Si hay algo claro en lo que a Iron Maiden se refiere es que su tercer album de estudio es de los más importantes de la banda por varios motivos. "The Number of the beast" de 1982 marcaba el cambio de vocalista en la banda con la entrada de nada menos que Bruce Dickinson, quien en ese momento no era del todo conocido a pesar de su gran trabajo con Samson pero terminaría significando un importante punto de inflexión para la banda en los años venideros. Más allá de la calidad de esta obra respecto a las predecesoras, que creo que no deja de ser algo subjetivo, lo que está claro es que la obra cuenta con auténticos himnos que han llegado al estátus de clásicos no solo de la banda sino del propio heavy metal. Reconocido con el tiempo como la obra maestra que es en sus inicios la supuesta, y recalco lo de supuesta temática satánica provocó multitud de situaciones de rechazo a la obra en Estados Unidos, tontos hay en todos lados. El caso es que como digo la calidad se terminaría por imponer y el reconocimiento terminaría por llegar desde todas las partes del globo a través de las cifras de ventas acumuladas en muchos paises. En lo referentte al artwork una vez más Derek Riggs se salió. Como dato curioso la portada en principio se creó para el single "Purgatory", considerándosela demasiado buena para "malgastarla" en un single y se decide dejarla para el siguiente trabajo, un nuevo acierto. El caso es que todo lo que provenga de Iaron Maiden tiene un estatus especial, más grande, casi con aire de mito y en gran parte se debe a la época ochentera de la banda, sobre todo a la parte inicial, donde la banda irrumpió de tal manera, tan arrolladoramente, tanto en lo sonoro como en lo estético que todo lo que de ella ha nacido esta completamente justificado. dejo hoy el artwork de la obra, todo un clásico este "The Number Of the Beast" de 1982.

IRON  MAIDEN  - LIVE  AFTER  DEATH  -  (1985) 

 

Siempre he creido de un modo absolutamente profundo que los discos en directo no son la mejor manera de disfrutar de la música en directo de una banda que te gusta, es evidente que es in situ donde uno puede apreciar y disfrutar al 100% de la calidad de sus músicos favoritos. Pero, hay ocasiones históricas, momentos de esos irrepetibles que marcan a mucha gente, incluso a generaciones enteras, y la presentación en vivo del quinto LP de Maiden fue uno de esos hitos musicales que dieron el paso definitivo a la banda hacia el mito que hoy en día son. Así pues, ante un evento de tamaña magnitud solo puede uno quitarse el so,brero e intentar agarrarse a la fantasía de poder haber estado en ese momento y lugar a través de lo que puede sin miedo a exagerar considerarse como uno de los mejores discos en vivo de la historia de la música. En 1985 Maiden ya estaban en la cima, posiblemente en lo compositivo ya habían parido muchas de sus mejores obras, y la pletórica e insultante potencia de quien se sabe invencible se apreciaba en sus actuaciones en vivo. Recogidas estas en este album "Live after death" podemos hacernos una idea fantástica del crecimiemto exponencial de una banda eterna. La "World Slavery Tour" de Maiden constó de 191 conciertos en apenas un año, visitando 24 paises, algunos de ellos tras el telón de acero, siendo pioneros en esto también, presentando el disco 4 temas de "Powerslave", cuatro de "Piece of mind", cinco de "Number of the beast", tres de "Iron Maiden" y uno de "Killers", editado a su vez en formato VHS, DVD posteriormente para terminar el viaje al pasado más glorioso de la banda y del heavy metal. La portadaza que aquí dejo hoy es obra una vez más de Derek Riggs, una de las más increibles para mí, todo acompaña, obra perfecta de principio a fín, uno de esos discos en vivo que tienen categoría de LP de estudio, un mito.

REMEMBER  TOMORROW

El comienzo de un mito bien vale siempre la pena un repaso, y que hay en esto del heavy metal más mítico, influyente y grande que Iron Maiden, poco o nada. Hablamos de su primera obra, "Iron Maiden" de nuevo, de 1980, para dejar en el blog otro de los temas que impactaron al globo con su estilo personal, nacido al calor de la corriente archi famosa de la NWOBHM, y adueñándose muy desde el principio de las miradas de todos. En esos comienzos, la banda ya sonaba muy distinta a otros que arrancaban, eran potencialmente "estrellables", es decir, tenían potencial de estrellas, el sonido a través de muchos momentos de la obra dejaba entrever muchas cosas a nivel técnico y era solo el inicio. Y hoy quiero dejar en el blog uno de los temas que hacían presagiar ese tipo de cositas, a nivel compositivo, momentos como las partes instrumentadas de "Remember Tomorrow" hacían ver a los músicos en ciernes aún, y la obra, para ser un debut, era promesa de muchas cosas que se cumplirían después con creces. IRON  MAIDEN  - Killers -  (1981)

 

Que decir de una de las más importantes bandas de todos los tiempos en esto del haevy metal, poco, todo está ya dicho, y las cifras hablan por si mismas, por algo será. Killers fue el segundo de los LP's de la banda, y en muchos sentidos fue decisivo para entender la historia misma de la banda y en parte del heavy metal. Es un disco que tiene ciertas particularidades, en lo que a los miembros del grupo se refiere el primer album con Adrian Smith a la guitarra y el último con Paul Di'Anno a la voz antes de que la banda lo echase por no dar la talla en vivo por sus problemas alcoholicos y de drogas. Es igualmente el primero de la banda con el productor Martin Birch que les acompañaría en sus próximos discos hasta "Fear Of The Dark", curiosamente su época más aclamada y objetivamente mejor. Es por tanto un punto de inflexión, con un afinado del estilo, en velocidad y en limpieza de producción, influjo claro para otras bandas y el estilo completo. En lo referente a la portada Derek Riggs se lució con un icónico dibujo que transciende a la propia banda. Una obra que ha vendido más de cuatro millones de copias, y de la que hoy dejo en el blog su artwork, un clásico.

Canciones para una vida - Iron Maiden - The Time Machine

 

THE  TIME  MACHINE

Redundando en la idea por todos conocida del cambio de sonido de la banda britanica icónica "Iron Maiden", el nuevo disco va desvelando sus secretos poco a poco, con las escuchas necesarias y pausadas, prestando toda la atención que la banda, su trayectoria y su historia merecen, descubrimos, en la línea mencionada del sonido "Maiden" de la segunda parte digamos de su discografía, algunos momentos que brillan con toda la identidad de los temas melódicos que se quedan en tu cabeza, y uno de ellos lo encontramos en "The time machine", un tema medianamente largo, que en clave de casi medo tiempo melancólico mantiene ese sello personal que habla de su capacidad compositiva. Creo que este es el modelo actual de la banda que mejores frutos puede ofrecer, tanto desde la perspectiva madura compositiva del grupo como interpretativa, sobre todo desde el punto de vista vocal de Dickinson. Sería estupendo volver a verles parir un single a lo "Run to the hills", aunque también en cierto modo un tanto antinatural quizá. Este "The Time Machine" mantiene esas cabalgadas a menos ritmo tan maidenianas, esa melodía recurrente que se te mete, algunos cambios, y en definitiva el encanto de la banda, un gran tema del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Iron Maiden - Stratego

 

STRATEGO

Poco queda ya para que salga a la luz por completo el décimo séptimo LP de estudio de los británicos Iron Maiden, en concreto el 3 de septiembre, y poco a poco van también desvelándose los secretos de la obra en esta ocasión a través de su segundo single de adelanto, "Stratego", canción más corta que su primer single (4:59), aunque el resto de temas se van todos por encima de los siete minutos salvo un par de ellos más. Así pues, redundando en la idea presente desde hace ya un par de décadas en el material que crea este mito hecho banda, ese sonido que fue marca de la casa y sello del heavy metal dejó ya de ser factible hace demasiado para dar paso a ese otro sonido Maiden que aquí una vez más podemos encontrar. THE  WRITING  ON  THE  WALL

Como siempre, como no puede ser de otra manera cada paso adelante que da esta banda atrae automáticamente las miradas de medio planeta, o de la totalidad del metálico, pero eso sí, justificadamente y por méritos propios ante la trayectoria que han tenido, y, a pesar de todo, de que ya damos todos por hecho que no habrá un nuevo "Number of the beast", que su época más mítica quedo atrás hace demasiado, cada nuevo material deja perlas de su carisma y eso merece ya la pena en si mismo. Continuando la tendencia que tienen, el sexteto británico continua con ese alargamiento de los temas, ese otro sentimiento maiden de estas pasadas dos décadas, pero seis años sin material nuevo despiertan todas las curiosidades posibles. Este "The writing on the wall" no es para ti si buscas un "Aces High" o cualquier otro mito de esos de tres o cuatro minutos de single maiden ochenterote, es el adelanto del que será su décimo séptimo LP de estudio, de título "Belshazzar's Feast". El primer single compuesto por Adrian Smith y Bruce Dickinson, va acompañado por un clip a lo grande de animación, según las palabras del propio Dickinson "creado para los fans de Maiden", y centrado en Eddie. Vermos lo que deparan los acontecimientos respecto a la nueva obra, de momento dejo en el blog un enlace a youtube de este nuevo single y de su flamante nuevo clip oficial.

Canciones para una vida - Iron Maiden - Aces High

 

ACES  HIGH

No por ser muy repetido debemos tenerlo menos en cuenta, pero el hecho es que Iron Maiden es uno de los grupos más grandes de la historia del heavy metal, e incluso trascendiendo el género, de la música en general. Esta afirmación que se sustenta por méritos propios de la banda, se basa en obras fundamentales como la que hoy de nuevo nos ocupa, "Powerslave" de 1984, la leyenda de la banda ya comenzaba en esos momentos a ser real y grande y para su ya quinto LP de estudio, este "Powerslave" se preparaban para afrontar la conquista planetaria en su gira más extensa, (que así a continuado siendo) a través de su "World Slavery Tour" presentando este "Powerslave" durante dos años que quedaría plasmado en el anotlógico directo "Live after Death",en 1985,  para mi gusto el mejor disco en vivo que he escuchado y que guardo como un tesoro personal en mi casa en su formato vinilo doble. Semejante gira se alimentaba de un material tremendo presentado en el disco que nos ocupa y también, por supuesto en el material anterior, seguramente los mejores momentos de la banda. Hoy quiero volver adejar en el blog otro de los temazos de la obra, "Aces High", que decir, un clasico de la banda, de esos temas que no dan tregua y del que dejo un enlace a youtube, Iron Maiden, historia viva metálica.

HEAVEN  CAN  WAIT

Todos tenemos una opinión propia  referente a ese tipo de bandas que están en la cima por uno u otro motivo, y si hay una que se expone más que ninguna a crear una opinión entre el público general es sin duda Iron Maiden. Es bastante generalizado el respeto que la banda ha alcanzado entre la mayoría, y es que su nombre es sinónimo de Heavy Metal más que ningún otro. Podemos pensar que su mejor época es esta o aquella, que hicieron todo antes de tal obra, y un largo etc de tópicos que se oyen cada día al sacar el tema, pero el caso es que siguen al pie del cañón, cuatro décadas después, manteniendo intacto el estatus, y editando material, que en esta ocasión, en este 2020 será en forma de disco en vivo. Por eso es siempre buen momento para echar la vista atrás a su material viejo, (o nuevo, da igual), en esta ocasión volviendo a uno de los albumes que despertó cierto recelo en su momento por su cambio de enfoque digamos "técnico" al crear su sonido, su "Somewhere in time" del 86. Ya he dejado varios de sus temas en el blog y no me repetiré, solo destacar otra de las canciones que lo componen, en esta ocasión "Heaven can wait", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube, siempre es buen momento para Iron Maiden, digan lo que digan.

Canciones para una vida - Iron Maiden - The Longest Day

THE  LONGEST  DAY

 Como siempre que uno se acerca a un mito viviente como es el caso, y sobre todo en este, de Iron Maiden, todo lo que se pueda decir ya se habrá dicho, y cada opinión en la dirección que sea se defiende de una forma vehemente. Incluyo mis opiniones en ese saco y el mio no suele ser nunca objetiva en este caso pues soy de los defensores a ultranza de esta banda. Hablando de este decimo cuarto disco de estudio del grupo británico, estamos entrando en el tramo más moderno y actual del grupo en su ya larga historia, y eso implica una tendencia natural hacia ese toque casi progresivo en muchos tramos de sus obras y sus canciones. Mucho tiempi hace que la formula compositiva de temas directos y de no mas de 4 o 5 minutos componían sus discos, de hecho muy desde el comienzo del grupo han dejado entrever esa tendencia a incluir temas más alargados y progresivos, algo que se ha ido imponiendo a medida que avanzamos en su historia. Este disco apunta mucho en esa dirección, pero eso para nada tiene por que implicar nada negativo, y no lo hace. Es una obra muy destacable este "A matter of life and death" de 2006, siempre hay unos maestros tras las siglas de Iron Maiden, y eso se nota. Si vas con el "chip" del "Number of the beast" por supuesto esto es otra cosa, pero eso ya lo sabe cualquier seguidor completo de la banda. Una de las canciones que componen este disco es "The longest day", una de mis preferidas de la obra y de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

CHILDREN  OF  THE  DAMNED

Si ayer mismo hablaba en el blog de una de las más grandes bandas del panorama metálico internacional de cualquier época hoy traigo a otra que no se queda atrás, otra de las fundamentales, de las eternas, de las que reunen solo opiniones positivas de cualquier metalhead a lo largo y ancho del globo, una de esas bandas a las que no cuesta retornar ciclicamente, más aún si nos referimos a la parte inicial de su carrera, prácticamente una época perfecta obra tras obra. Hoy recurro una vez más a su primera obra con Dickinson a la cabeza en funciones vocales tras la salida de Paul DiAnno, un cambio que coincidiría con la explosión definitiva del grupo en la escena internacional, disparados al estrellato del que ya no descenderían hasta hoy mismo. Esta tercera obra de estudio de la banda, "The number of the beast", de 1982, sigue siendo un importantísimo disco dentro del universo del heavy metal, obra fundamental de la que casi podríamos escoger cada canción con garantía de éxito, por lo que hoy quiero escoger otro de sus temas, hoy uno algo menos recurrente como es "Children of the Damned" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

POWERSLAVE

Sin duda estamos ante una de esas obras en las que es difícil escoger solo una canción, por eso yo ya he escogido varias para dejar en el blog. Aún más cercanos a la creación de la banda que otra cosa, estábamos con "Powerslave" sin embargo ante una obra en la que la banda había sacado ya cuatro discos de estudio (cinco con este), y el reconocimiento pasado ya empezaba a ser clamor. Además el grupo había pasado ya por muchas situaciones, con cambio de cantante incluido y Dickinson estaba a estas alturas completamente integrado y rayando a la altura de los mejores. Es sin duda este disco de 1984 uno de los hitos en la carrera de la banda y eso se tradujo en cero descartes, todos los temas impresionantes para un disco antológico que solo hizo mayor la leyenda de la banda. Canciones para una vida - Iron Maiden - Two Minutes To Midnight

TWO  MINUTES  TO  MIDNIGHT

Es siempre un placer retornar una vez tras otra a una de esas bandas que son como un seguro de vida para encontrar todo tipo de sensaciones positivas, más aún si nos remontamos a los inicios musicales de la misma, época que sirvió por derecho absoluto para que alcanzasen el estatus de mito. Por supuesto son "Los Maiden", y una de sus importantísimas obras, su quinto LP "Powerslave" que sirviese posteriormente para editar el demoledor "Live after death" en su gira mundial del citado disco, una escusa perfecta para una de las obras más impresionantes que he tenido el placer de escuchar en vivo, ya que los albumes en concierto no suelen ser de mis predilectos, para eso está el acudir a los conciertos "in situ", pero como digo, siempre hay excepciones, como es el caso. En definitiva, un tema más de una de las bandas más grandes que ha habido, hay y seguramente habrá, en uno de los temas más single de ese cuarto disco, "Two minutes to midnight", aunque claro, toda la obra es para enmarcar, una canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.
