Thunderstone - The Path

THE  PATH 

Dentro del subgénero del power, y teniendo en cuenta la década de los 2000 y la escena finlandesa encontramos un gran número de bandas que lo intentaron, no todas ellas con un resultado masivo. Muchos de esos grupos se mantuvieron en un segundo plano pero publicando discos interesantes en sus carreras, no siempre estables, ni prolíficas. Uno de esos grupos es Thunderstone, formados en 2000, con un primer periodo de actividad hasta 2011 y una reactivación desde 2013 hasta la actualidad, un total de seis LP's de estudio siendo el sexto de ellos, "Apocalypse Again" de 2016, el único publicado, a fecha de esta reseña, dentro de su segundo periodo de actividad con la particularidad del retorno del cantante inicial del grupo. Derdian - Lord Of War

 

LORD  OF  WAR 

Derdian es el enésimo grupo italiano nacido al calor del éxito de sus compatriotas Rhapsody, en este caso de comienzo algo más tardío, ya que aunque se forman en 1998 no comienzan a publicar material hasta 2005, pero el influjo es innegable. En 2016 la banda publicaba su séptimo LP de estudio aunque no se si se debería considerar como LP en sí ya que se trata de un recopilatorio de sus tres primeras obras, regrabadas con invitados de primera línea para la ocasión y con tan solo un tema nuevo "Lord Of War" con Fabio Lione, uno de esos mercenarios musicales colaboradores compulsivos que en este concepto compositivo queda absolutamente perfecto, un tema del que dejo hoy en el blog un enlace a youtube.

Omen - Hammer Damage

HAMMER  DAMAGE 

La banda estadounidense Omen es una de esas bandas consideradas de culto para muchos, dentro del marco del heavy metal de la vieja escuela y de inspiración épica. Claro está que hablamos de la década de los ochenta, y claramente también la falta de constancia con los diversos parones ha hipotecado una carrera que podría haber alcanzado cotas mucho más elevadas. En total siete LP's de estudio, a fecha de esta reseña, es su legado compositivo entre 1983 y la actualidad en que parecen seguir en activo pero sin publicar material de estudio desde 2016 en que publicaban "Hammer Damage", séptimo LP, del que hoy dejo en el blog el tema que le da nombre, y del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Illusory - Utopia + A Few Days Make Eternity

UTOPIA  +  A  FEW  DAYS  MAKE  ETERNITY

De nuevo la escena griega a la palestra, en esta ocasión para hablar de una banda nacida de las cenizas de otra, son Illusory que desde 2012 con ese nombre llevan en activo aunque parte de sus miembros ya pertenecieron a "The Ivory Tower" entre 1992 y 2012 lo que muestra que lo de la escena griega es solo el fruto de muchos años en la oscuridad haciendo las cosas bien. Illusory hacen un heavy metal con un cierto aire clásico, en ocasiones casi power en otras casi progresivo, siempre interesante. En 2016 editan el primero de sus tres LP's a fecha de esta reseña, titulado "The Ivory tower" refiriendose a su anterior etapa, un disco del que quiero hoy dejar en el blog uno de sus temas, la intro instrumental y el tema que lo abre, "A few days make eternity" del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Hammerfall - Second To None

 

SECOND  TO  NONE

De vuelta a los, diría yo, innecesriamente calificados como polémicos Hammerfall, ya que no debería haberseles puesto bajo una mirada tan crítica desde tan temprano, quizá al inicio no se les debió deificar de tal manera ni despues denostar de manera tan gratuita, es simplemente un caso más de banda que ha encontrado un filón y lo explota repitiendo una fórmula que les funciona perfectamente desde el punto de vista de las ventas como desde el de la puesta en escena en directo, aprendiendo esto también con ña práctica a través de su obra más innovadora "Infected" que fue una pura crítica por parte de propios y extraños, la lectura clara, volver a lo suyo, y en esas están. En 2016 editaban su décimo LP de estudio, "Built to last" con esas características compositivas tan 100% Hammerfall. Poco que añadir, tan solo dejar otra muestra más del buen album, en este caso el tema que lo cierra, "Second to none", cocinado a medio gas, pero con fuerza, un tema del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

RAISE  YOUR  SWORD

Con tan solo una pequeña pincelada de su capacidad compositiva, es una auténtica pena que la banda holandesa "Stailinn Drakk" haya dejado en pausa su proyecto con un único EP editado en esa clave de power sinfónico de corte absolutamente europeo. Sin apoyo discográfico esperemos que tan solo estén cogiendo energía para dar un nuevo paso compositivo y comenzar realmente su carrera pues a juzgar por su debut de 2016, como digo en formato EP, "Raise your sword!", podrían llegar a dar mucha guerra. Canciones para una vida - Sellsword - Crossing The Blades

 

CROSSING  THE  BLADES

Los británicos "Sellsword" son una de esas bandas que han ido sabiendo hacer las cosas muy bien desde el punto de vista compositivo, aunque igualmente son una de esas bandas que de momento han pasado bastante, demasiado, desapercibidos, sobre todo a juzgar por ese citado potencial. La verdad es que en términos de historia de la banda el grupo lleva ya en acitvo casi una década, (desde 2013) sin embargo desde la perspectiva de producción musical tan solo dos LP's adornan su discografía, hasta la fecha de esta reseña. Hablamos de un estilo bastante personal, dificil de encasillar en un solo subgénero pues toma elementos tanto del power como del heavy metal clásico, y ellos mismos le añaden la etiqueta de épico. Además, sobre todo en el segundo album, se nota alguna estructura en lo instrumental, que no en lo vocal, típico de las bandas death melódicas, en defiitiva que parecen tener buenos mimbres para llegar a asomar la cabeza en algún momento. Ya en su debut dejaron buenas pinceladas de su calidad, en la obra "..And now we ride" de 2016, como por ejemplo con este "Crossing the blades" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Grailknights - Crimson Shades Of Glory

 

CRIMSON  SHADES  OF  GLORY

De las ya muchas bandas que han decidido tomar un camino escénico y compositivo más digamos desenfadado, sin duda alguna los alemanes "Grailknights" son uno de mis favoritos como todo lector asiduo de este blog ya habrá deducido. La calidad de la banda se me antoja indiscutible, y la trayectoria del grupo, con más de dos décadas de actividad y seis LP's a los que acompañan otros dos EP's resulta un aval más que suficiente como para que más parte del gran publico les premiase con un reconocimiento bien merecido. La riqueza compositiva, que va desde el death melódico sobre todo de sus iniicos hasta el toque más power del la parte más nueva de su discografía es igualmente innegable, así que creo que sus virtudes deberían dar cobijo a un nutrido grupo de metalheads. Hoy quiero dejar en el blog otra de sus canciones, en este caso una perteneciente a su segundo EP publicado "Dead or alive" de 2016, concretamente "Crimson shades of glory" en la que se rodean con la banda "Van Canto", canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Wisdom - Nightmare Of The Seas

 

NIGHTMARE  OF  THE  SEAS

En esto de la música siempre hay muchas cosas que se nos escapan, como es evidente, por mucho que nos recorramos internet de arriba a abajo no encontramos toda la información o los motivos completos del porque de la desaparición de ciertos proyectos o ciertas bandas, tras trayectorias más o menos cortas pero que destellan con un brillo propio innegable, en esta ocasión dentro del power de corte europeo, encarnado en los húngaros Wisdom, que desarrollaron una prometedora carrera entre 2001 y 2018 para separarse demasiado prematuramente  tras editar cuatro fenomenales LP's complementados con dos EP's. El último de esos albumes es "Rise of the wise", una obra prototípica del europower, casi un manual de como hacerlo, y hacerlo bien, que terminaría por ser su despedida en 2016. Canciones para una vida - Theocracy - Easter

 

EASTER

Otra banda de esas que se piensan mucho, pero mucho cada paso que dan son los estadounidenses "Theocracy" uno de esos grupos en los que la calidad salta a la vista, es evidente que se trata de un grupo que prefiere la calidad a la cantidad aunque a veces se me antoja demasiado larga la espera entre obra y obra. Para ilustrar lo dicho solo se necesita echar un vistazo a su discografía desde su formación en 2002 hasta hoy en día en que siguen activos han editado tan solo 4 LP's de estudio, lo que da una media de un disco por lustro. Quien conozca las andanzas de la banda sabrá que su temática en cristiana o socio religiosa, y siempre suelen ser las fechas navideñas época en la que nos regalen un poco de material extra en forma de villancico o similar, veremos si ente años toca, la última vez fue en 2019. En lo referente a su último LP hay que retrotraerse ya hasta 2016, y ese lustro casi ha pasado ya con lo que no sería raro tener noticias compositivas en breve, algo que algunos celebraríamos. Como siempre sus albumes estan compuestos en una clave power progresiva, de esquisita producción y temas en ocasiones largos y llenos de cambios, rasgo típico del metal progresivo. Hoy quiero dejar en el blog uno de los temas de su último album publicado a fecha de esta reseña, su "Ghost Ship" de 2016, y dejo uno de esos temas largos mencionados con continuos cambios, y derroche de calidad, la canción "Easter" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube. Ojalá tengamos pronto noticias de un nuevo LP.

Canciones para una vida - Bifrost - Tobendes Herz

 

TOBENDES  HERZ

Tras la salida a la venta de este cuarto disco de estudio de los austriacos "Bifrost" en 2016 el grupo decide dejar en suspenso el proyecto hasta la actualidad, y siempre han sabido demostrar a lo largo de su periodo en activo que comprende desde 2005 hasta el citado 2016, un gran potencial en el apartado del death melódico y folk que han practicado. "Mana Ewah" va en esa misma línea, reconocible esa identidad de la banda en esta su última obra una vez más, aunque en ese momento tan solo quedaba uno de los miembros originales del grupo, lo que puede darnos una pista del motivo de este parón desde 2016, veremos si definitivo. Canciones para una vida - Morning Dwell - The Guardians Of Time

 

THE  GUARDIANS  OF  TIME

En tan solo unas semanas está programada la salida de un nuevo single de los suecos "Morning Dwell", de título "Blizzard", supongo que preludio de un nuevo LP de estudio del que aún no he leido noticias reales, de ahí la suposición. Para el que no conozca de esta banda, hablamos de power metal de corte europeo, muy de su escuela natal, sin inventos nuevos pero con elsabor característico del subgénero. Hoy quiero recuperar una de las canciones del que es el último de sus dos albumes publicados, (a fecha de esta reseña), "The Guardians of time" de 2016. El grupo se formó en 2012, y tras su debut de 2014 "Morning Dwell" tivieron continuidad compositiva en este "The guardians of time" aunque después este silencio de ya cuatro años que veremos si con el citado single del inicio de esta reseña, se rompe en favor de un tercer LP. Canciones para una vida - Serious Black - Castor Skies

 

CASTOR  SKIES

A pesar de que en el momento actual, esta banda internacional tiene poco que ver en cuanto a sus integrantes con el momento inicial de su carrera, el espíritu compositivo si que ha ido manteniendose en esta banda que nació con esa vocación de proyecto colaborativo que ha sabido perpetuarse y además con un importante volumen productivo, sacando ya el grupo 5 LP's de estudio en algo más de seis años de vida. Hablamos de power melódico, de corte europeo, que en un inicio fue impulsado por nombres importantes como Roland Grapow o Thomen Stauch. Hoy quiero dejar en el blog una de las canciones de su segundo LP, "Mirrorworld", de 2016, disco pleno del espiritu de su debut, con la melodía por bandera y la calidad compositiva y productiva como ley, nos dejan temas como su segundo singlem "Castor Skies", canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

SONG  FOR  THE  FALLEN

Mezcla los rasgos de bandas tan conocidas e importantes como "Hammerfall" y "Grave Digger" y tendrás una idea aproximada de lo que son capaces de hacer estos chicos procedentes de una escena no demasiado acostumbrada a parir bandas de este tipo, con un power tan europeo, si se quiere tan nórdico en lo que a las estructuras compositivas de las canciones se refiere, como es la francesa. Ya he mencionado las virtudes de este buen grupo con su ya larga trayectoria musical a sus espaldas y hoy de nuevo quiero dejar en el blog otra de las canciones que componen su, hasta la fecha de esta reseña, octavo y penúltimo LP, The Heathen Dawn" de 2016, hoy, en concreto quiero dejar la canción "Song for the fallen", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Einherjer - Dragons Of The North

DRAGONS  OF  THE  NORTH

Es costumbre por parte de muchos grupos la idea de recuperar material quizá demasiado inicial, que sobre todo no haya tenido en su momento la ocasión de ser grabado con las condiciones necesarias o con el enfoque apropiado al soler ser material de los inicios, cuando las ideas son buenas pero la pericia o los medios no tanto. En esta ocasión el ejemplo lo ponen los noruegos "Einherjer" con la reedición de su debut "Dragons of the north" al que añaden el pasado 2016 al título "XX". Originalmente la obra fue la presentación de la banda, allá por 1996, de ahí el añadido del 20 en números romanos para hacer notar esas dos décadas pasadas desde aquel primer LP. Si lo consideramos como un LP más sería el sétimo de la banda, de los ocho que, a fecha de esta reseña, han editado durante su carrera.Y que mejor tema para dejar en el blog de la citada obra que la que da nombre a la misma, "Dragons of the north", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Freedom Call - Kings Rise And Fall

KINGS  RISE  AND  FALL

Nuevo ejercicio, como en general cada canción de cada obra, de optimismo, enganche instantaneo, y power metal de manual, de ese que se hizo grande desde finales de los noventa a toda la década siguiente. Y es que los alemanes "Freedom Call" se valen y se sobran para hacer su sonido característico sin apenas esfuerzo aparente, y claro, la novena obra de la banda, y penúltima a fecha de esta reseña, "Master of light" de 2016, no es una excepción. La capacidad de parir melodías de este grupo parece casi infinita, y este "Kings rise and fall" del que hoy quiero dejar un enlace en el blog es solo un ejemplo más, tema directo al cerebro, que si se pusiese de moda masivamente sería silvado por propios y extraños por la facilidad que tienen estos tíos de crear canciones que entran a la primera. Canciones para una vida - Skiltron - Sawney Bean Clan

SAWNEY  BEAN  CLAN

Es siempre agradable recurrir al sonido repleto de gaitas y evocación de los argentinos "Skiltron", grupo del que como ya he dicho en varias ocasiones como más de uno trato de enterrarlo tras la salida en bloque del 80% del grupo para formar "Triddana", y que sin embargo a demostrado que con un concepto similar hay sitio para ambos grupos en la escena internacional. Cinco discos de estudio corroboran lo dicho y muestran a una banda ya más madura y recuperada de cualquier tema pasado, y centrándonos en su última obra publicada, "Legacy Of Blood" de 2016 dejo otra de sus canciones, "Sawney Bean Clan" con toda la fuerza del sello "Skiltron", canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Brymir - Thus I Became Kronos

THUS  I  BECAME  KRONOS

Ahora que parece que la banda finlandesa "Brymir" realmente ha cogido velocidad de crucero con el anuncio de la salida de su tercer LP, "Wings Of Fire" para este próximo 8 de marzo de 2019, parece igualmente buen momento para repasar su aún último LP publicado "Slayer of gods" de 2016. La fórmula escogida por la banda para sacar material es un tanto curiosa con la edición de singles sin previo aviso entre obra y obra, un tanto alejados de la publicación de las mismas, como una especie de aperitivo para hacer ver que aún están con vida. Supongo que han aprendido del largo silencio que hubo entre la primera y la segunda obra, (2011 - 2016), para además editar un segundo LP con un sensible bajón con respecto al debut. De todas maneras estamos ante una gran banda y eso lo demuestran incluso durante la que no es su mejor obra hasta la fecha, ya que hay buenos temas en ella, como este "Thus I became Kronos" que hoy dejo en el blog.

Canciones para una vida - Equilibrium - Rise Again

RISE  AGAIN

Nos encaminamos hacia los dos años desde la salida de este quinto y, hasta la fecha de esta reseña, último LP de los alemanes Equilibrium, un disco que plasma la evolución general en todos los aspectos que a medida que va pasando la carrera del grupo va haciéndose patente, en varios apartados además, desde los cambios en los miembros del grupo hasta el enfoque de las letras de las canciones, (más centradas en la mitología nórdica y fantasía al inicio de su carrera y más actuales y sociales hoy en día), pasando por el enfoque compositivo donde se ha abandonado un tanto más la vertiente folk para acercarse a un sonido más técnico si se quiere, eso sí, con el trabajo atmosférico de los teclados siempre presente, y quizá cada vez más, continuando por el progresivo aumento de canciones cantadas en ingles en detrimento de las cantadas en su alemán materno, hacen que en su conjunto el producto facturado por esta magnífica banda sea más lustroso, más vendible si se quiere aumentando su legión de seguidores obra tras obra, aunque quizá perdiendo alguno por el camino con nostalgia del sonido de sus inicios. Sea como sea este "Armageddon" de 2016 resulta ser sin duda una de las obras de ese año que esperemos que ya pronto tenga continuidad en nuevo material. Un disco este "Armageddon" del que hoy quiero dejar otro ejemplo de buen hacer en forma de la canción "Rise Again", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Minotaurus - Legend

LEGEND

El quinto LP de los alemanes Minotaurus se llama "Insolubilis", editado el pasado 2016, un paso más en la historia de la banda, en la linea conocida de los anteriores albumes del grupo, con esa mezcla de power de corte europeo, con ese toque folk, un tanto céltico en ocasiones que ha hecho que Minotaurus tenga ese sello propio. Desde luego no se trata de una banda muy conocida pero si poseedora de un buen gusto compositivo si lo tuyo es el power de corte europeo como decía antes. Activos desde 1994 se trata sin duda de una banda más que ha pasado desapercibida para el gran público, lo cual tampoco tiene por qué tener que ver con su falta o no de calidad, como en tantas ocasiones sucede, promoción, estar en el momento apropiado en el lugar justo, o simplemente suerte tienen muchas veces tanto o más que ver que el propio asunto compositivo. Sin duda esta banda no tiene nada que envidiar a otras del estilo, incluso en la producción. Uno de los rasgos propios del grupo es la amplia "plantilla" que lo compone, siete miembros, incluyendo guitarra, bajo batería, flauta, harpa y voz (hasta tres miembros diferentes, con voces masculinas y femeninas), hacen que sus composiciones alcancen más registros. En definitiva, un grupo al que es buena idea echar un vistazo si aún no lo has hecho pues puede sorprenderte para bien, si lo tuyo es este tipo de sonido.
