CHAINS  OF  FIRE

Dueños de un éxito moderado, tirando a flojo en esa primera parte de su carrera, los estadounidenses Virgin Steele son buen ejemplo de como era la escena americana, y puede extrapolarse al resto del planeta, en lo que se refiere a la importancia del apoyo discográfico a la hora de hacer crecer a una banda. Firmando con sellos menores, el grupo premanecía demasiado en el lado del "Potencial" para no terminar de explotar, faltando el plus de una buena promoción y quizá de algún que otro consejo para haber dado más lustre a su material, o al enfoque para venderlo. El caso es que la década de los ochenta en que nació este grupo les vió publicar cuatro LP's de estudio en una onda de heavy metal clásico, con todos los rasgos que darían su personalidad a la banda pero digamos un poco atenuados, la década de los noventa con un giro más hacia el power y una producción más lustrosa fue el impulso que la banda necesitaba, sin embargo la creatividad de la banda estaba presente desde el inicio. "Age of consent" fue la cuarta obra de estudio en su carrera, de 1988, y de ella quiero hoy dejar en el blog otro de los temas que la componen, hoy "Chains of fire" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

GO  DOWN  FIGHTING

Una de las muchas cosas que pueden echarse de menos de la escena ochentera, es el concepto de componer discos de calidad, mucho material en poco tiempo, era común que las bandas editasen un LP por año sin que se notase aparentemente en la calidad final del producto, además las bandas no se cortaban en editar singles ni Ep's en el mismo año en que editaban un LP, y de esa manera uno siempre encontraba material que comprar sin esperar largos años entre obra y obra de sus heroes metálicos. En 1983, por ejemplo, los estadounidenses Virgin Steele editaban un LP, "Guardians of the flame", un single, "A cry in the night" con un tema no incluido en el citado LP, y el EP "Wait for the night", y además en 1982 habían editado su debut . Sin duda era otro concepto, y en ocasiones ese espíritu se echa de menos. Ya han pasado unos cuantos años desde que los estadounidenses Virgin Steele sacasen su último LP de estudio, concretamente desde 2015, y en este 2023 editaran el que será ya su décimo quinto LP, que llevará por título "The passion of Dionysus" y que verá la luz de forma oficial el 30 de junio. En estos días nos han dejado su primer adelanto con la canción "Spiritual Warfare", absolutamente reconocible, lo que augura un disco que sigue su propia senda como banda para alegría de sus fans. Canciones para una vida - Virgin Steele - Thy Kingdom Come

 

THY  KINGDOM  COME

De nuevo vuelta a una de las escenas originarias importantes de verdad, una de las locomotoras sobre todo en los mismisimos inicios del heavy metal como fue la estadounidense, con tendencias que marcaban la senda a bandas de todos los rincones del planeta, nombres en mayúsculas y muchos otros que se desarrollaban a la sombra de aquellos. Una de las bandas que nacieron en esos momentos, para destacar e influir en el primer lustro de la citada década fue "Virgin Steele" que desarrollaron desde muy temprano el concepto del heavy metal épico, que muchos otros también seguirían dentro y fuera de sus fronteras, pero hablo del concepto original épico, donde dicha epicidad se lograba sin artificios, solo a base de composición en iterpretación dentro de los parametros clásicos de batería, bajo, guitarra y voz. Para 1985 "Virgin Steele" editaba ya su tercer LP de estudio, al que había que sumar además un EP en 1983, ya sabían de que iba el camino que querían seguir, y ya se habían enfrentado a la salida de un miembro importante para la banda como fue Jack Starr sustituido para la ocasión por Jack Pursino. El grupo, con sus luces y sus sombras, siempre supo sacar su máximo partido como banda de esos momentos épicos, destacando en ese apartado por encima de otros, y hoy traigo al blog una de esas canciones con tales atributos, "Thy Kingdom Come", de su "Noble Savage" de 1985, canción de la que dejo hoy un enlace a youtube.

I  WILL  COME  FOR  YOU


 El sexto disco de los estadounidenses "Virgin Steele" forma parte de una especie de obra doble conceptual, que el grupo editó en dos años consecutivos, "The marriage of heaven and hell" parte 1 y 2 , de los años 1994 y 1995. Para muchos la banda trató en este par de obras de reparar el error que cometieron en su anterior obra "Life among the ruins" de 1993, más centrada en un sonido hard americano que en el heavy power que venían utilizando desde los inicios a lo largo de su carrera musical. Desde luego ya he hablado de esta banda en varias ocasiones en el blog, y alguna más vendrá seguro, pues la trayectoria de la banda es suficiente aval como para recurrir a su discografía más veces, un grupo menos reconocido una vez más de lo que se han ganado con los ya muchos años en la escena internacional. Con esta sexta obra se inicia un punto en la carrera de la banda que ya no han abandonado hasta la actualidad, con una cuidada atención a como sonar, como si hubiesen encontrado una fórmula que, si bien, como decía más arriba, no les ha hecho llegar nunca a ser unos superventas, si que parece haberles hecho sentir que están en la senda adecuada para ellos mismos, granjeándose el respeto entre gran parte del público metálico en general. Canciones para una vida - Virgin Steele - We Rule The Night

WE  RULE  THE  NIGHT

Tercer larga duración de los estadounidenses "Virgin Steele", de título "Noble Savage", del año 1985. Ya he hablado en varias ocasiones de esta banda en el blog pues son propietarios de una larga trayectoria y su discografía resulta suficientemente importante e influyente como para acudir en muchas ocasiones a ella. Es evidente que Virgin Steele destilan personalidad propia, un sonido muy auténtico y personal que en esta época inicial de la banda discurría por senderos muy heavy metal old school. A pesar de lo largo de su carrera siguen sin obtener, en mi opinión, el respeto y reconocimiento merecidos, pero como siempre, el tiempo pondrá a cada uno en su sitio y, sinceramente, creo que el sitio de Virgin Steele está más arriba en lo que a "méritos metálicos" de lo que realmente se les reconoce. En fin, como decía al inicio, hoy quiero dejar un tema de su tercer LP, un disco estupendo en lineas generales que recomiendo escuchar entero, y que por cierto fue reeditado en 2008 con la inclusión de algún bonus. Hoy quiero dejar el tema "We rule the night", que abre la obra, una canción que siempre me ha gustado mucho y de la que hoy dejo un enlace a youtube.

Cuarta obra de los de Nueva York, "Age of Consent", de 1988 que después sería reeditada en 1997 con la inclusión de varios temas extra, uno de los cuales ha aparecido ya en este blog. Como digo Virgin Steele es una banda estadounidense de power metal con un sello muy personal en su sonido, que en ocasiones nos recordará un poco a sus compatriotas y paisanos Neoyorquinos Manowar, sobre todo en algunos tonos vocales. Virgin Steele se forma en 1981 por el guitarrista Jack Starr que después incorporaría a los demás componentes del grupo, entre ellos al cantante David DeFeis, que le da ese toque tan personal con su forma de cantar, también conocido por su participación en algunas de las obras de "Avantasia". Curiosamente en 1984 el fundador Jack Starr deja la banda y tras luchas legales por el nombre de Virgin Steele no consigue quedarse con los derechos a pesar de ser miembro fundador. En su lugar, David DeFeis y los demás continúan su actividad bajo el nombre de Virgin Steele hasta nuestros días. Desde 1982 en que sacan su primer LP llevan 13 discos de estudio y dos EP's de un power un pelín speed y épico. Poco a poco y a medida que la carrera musical de la banda avanzaba han ido introduciendo en sus discos la influencia de elementos teatrales, progresivos y sinfónicos. Volviendo la mirada a los inicios del grupo, de un heavy metal más "old school" vemos un punto de inflexión quizá desde esta obra en adelante, más hacia ese aumento de complejidad compositiva o inclusión de un mayor número de elementos en sus discos, pudiendo casi representar este "Age of consent" el fin de una primera época de la banda. De este disco hay varios temas que destacar, entre ellos por ejemplo este "We are eternal", que cierra la obra en su edición de 1988, y del que dejo hoy un enlace a youtube.

Una vez más tengo que hablar en el blog de una banda de esas que poca presentación necesitan, pero que, de haber organizado su carrera un poco mejor, sin disputas internas entre los que la formaron quizá hubiesen llegado aún más arriba, sobre todo si hablamos del talento de figuras que después saldrían de la banda, caso de Jack Starr, que continuó luego su carrera fuera de Virgin Steele, y del que ya he hablado en el blog. Volviendo a la banda que nos ocupa, Virgin Steele es una banda estadounidense de power metal con un sello muy personal en su sonido, que en ocasiones nos recordará un poco a sus compatriotas y paisanos Neoyorquinos Manowar, sobre todo en algunos tonos vocales. Virgin Steele se forma en 1981 por el guitarrista Jack Starr que después incorporaría a los demás componentes del grupo, entre ellos al cantante David DeFeis, que le da ese toque tan personal con su forma de cantar, también conocido por su participación en algunas de las obras de "Avantasia". Virgin Steele se forma en 1981 por el guitarrista Jack Starr que después incorporaría a los demás componentes del grupo, entre ellos al cantante David DeFeis, que le da ese toque tan personal con su forma de cantar, también conocido por su participación en algunas de las obras de "Avantasia". Curiosamente en 1984 el fundador Jack Starr deja la banda y tras luchas legales por el nombre de Virgin Steele no consigue quedarse con los derechos a pesar de ser miembro fundador. En su lugar, David DeFeis y los demás continúan su actividad bajo el nombre de Virgin Steele hasta nuestros días. Hoy quiero volver a los inicios de la banda para referirme a su segundo disco de estudio, "Guardians of the flame", de 1983, un disco en el que conservan la enorme energía de su debut "Virgin Steele" del año anterior, 1982, aunque ya un poco más enfocado a los terrenos musicales que estarían por venir en el futuro de su carrera, sin embargo aquí, en este momento de la carrera de los americanos el sonido heavy metálico de la época esta claramente reflejado, como queda patente en canciones como este "Life of crime", del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Hoy quiero dejar en el blog una canción de su disco "Life among the ruins", quinto larga duración de la banda, de 1993, un disco con el que volvían a editar material de estudio tras cinco años sin editar material, con un retorno un pelín diferente, con un estilo un poco más influido por el hard rock americano y europeo, y saliéndose un poco del estilo propio de la banda, pero es que como ya hemos dicho en alguna ocasión, estos años entre principios y mediados de los 90 fueron años difíciles para las bandas clásicas, pues veían como nuevos estilos se iban imponiendo en el mercado internacional y muchas bandas intentaban adaptarse o debían escoger permanecer fieles a sus ideas musicales. Puede que esto sucediese también en Virgin Steele en este momento de su carrera, editando esta obra un tanto más atípica en lo que venía siendo su discografía y en lo que fue posteriormente, ya desde la salida de su siguiente obra, "The marriage of heaven and hell" de 1994, en que volvieron a su senda natural,  aun así, se pueden destacar buenos temas de esta obra, como por ejemplo la canción "Jet Black", de la que dejo hoy un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Virgin Steele - I Will Come For You

I WILL COME FOR YOU

Virgin Steele es una banda estadounidense de power metal con un sello muy personal en su sonido, que en ocasiones nos recordará un poco a sus compatriotas y paisanos Neoyorquinos Manowar, sobre todo en algunos tonos vocales. Virgin Steele se forma en 1981 por el guitarrista Jack Starr que después incorporaría a los demás componentes del grupo, entre ellos al cantante David DeFeis, que le da ese toque tan personal con su forma de cantar, también conocido por su participación en algunas de las obras de "Avantasia". Curiosamente en 1984 el fundador Jack Starr deja la banda y tras luchas legales por el nombre de Virgin Steele no consigue quedarse con los derechos a pesar de ser miembro fundador. En su lugar, David DeFeis y los demás continúan su actividad bajo el nombre de Virgin Steele hasta nuestros días. Desde 1982 en que sacan su primer LP llevan 13 discos de estudio y dos EP's de un power un pelín speed y épico. Poco a poco y a medida que la carrera musical de la banda abanzaba han ido introduciendo en sus discos la influencia de elementos teatrales, progresivos y sinfónicos. Hoy quiero dejar en el blog una canción de su disco "The Marriage of heaven and hell", sexto larga duración de la banda de 1994, que llega en una época muy prolífica de la banda en la que el año anterior, en 1993 ya habían editado su disco "Life among the ruins", y al año siguiente de la edición de la primera parte de "The Marriage of heaven and hell", editarían una segunda parte completando esta obra conceptual que explora las dos caras del ser humano, el bien y el mal. En la primera parte de "The Marriage of heaven and hell" que hoy nos ocupa encontramos a unos Virgin Steele con un power bast,ante épico y lleno de influencias sinfónicas y de melodías continuas con un aire bastante progresivo. A lo largo de su discografía encontramos muy buenos temas como este Perfect Mansions que hoy dejo en el blog, es un tema de 1997, aunque el disco es de 1988, y me explico, el disco es el cuarto de su carrera musical, de 1988, pero se regraba en 1997 metiendo más temas, entre ellos este Perfect Mansions, un medio tiempo - balada de casi 9 minutos pero que destila epicidad por todas partes y que siempre me ha gustado mucho. Volveremos a estos chicos para algún otro tema más cañero, que los hay. Dejo un enlace a youtube.
