Nuevo adelanto del nuevo disco de los finlandeses Sonata Arctica que han prometido que han regresado a una senda mucho más acorde a lo que venían haciendo ultimamente demasiado alejado del deslumbrante power de la primera parte de su carrera. "Clear Cold Beyond" se espera de forma oficial para el 8 de marzo y hoy dejo en el blog este tema recién estrenado, "Dark Empath" del que dejo un enlace a youtube de su clip oficial.

Canciones para una vida - Sonata Arctica - A Monster Only You Can't See

 

A  MONSTER  ONLY  YOU  CAN'T  SEE

Desde la segunda mitad de la carrera de los finlandeses Sonata Arctica, el eterno debate entre los defensores de la evolución sonora de la banda y los nostálgicos del sonido inicial de la misma parecía irremediablemente avocado a asumir que el grupo directamente habría pasado la página del power para adentrarse en ese indeterminado sonido que venían haciendo. Parece haber un cierto halo de esperanza con la supuesta mirada atrás en terrenos compositivos esperada para la nueva obra, "Clear cold beyond" que se espera para el 8 de marzo del inminente 2024, sobre todo encarnada en su primer sencillo "First In Line" que ya dejé en el blog, hoy, a través de este segundo adelanto, "a monster only you can't see", la cosa no me queda tan clara, pero desde luego sigue dando mejores vibraciones que lo que venían mostrando años atrás, el caso es que este segundo adelanto tiene un innegable trasfondo navideño, y está cocinado a medio gas, con ese componente progresivo que, en el fondo, sinceramente, y con los antecedentes mencionados hace que me tome el nuevo disco con pies de plomo hasta escucharlo en su conjunto. Sea como sea el tiempo lo dirá, espero que se powericen de nuevo, y que la nueva obra resulte adicitva, hasta entonces dejo un enlace a youtube de este "A monster only you can't see".

Canciones para una vida - Sonata Arctica - First In Line

 

FIRST  IN  LINE

Es curioso ver como las bandas que generan una gran repercusión, esas que están apoyadas en una exitosa trayectoria, recurren a su pasado más glorioso cuando les resulta útil, a pesar de que, como es el caso de los finaldeses "Sonata Arctica", hayan justificado una evolución a un sonido diferente con el argumento de que no iban a estar haciendo un "Ecliptica" continuamente. Estamos de acuerdo en que los músicos tienen todo el derecho de evolucionar hacia donde quieran, pero si su sonido se aleja en exceso de lo que era en un inicio, y de lo que les hizo cosechar un incontestable éxito, no deben extrañarse de la fuga de fans hacia terrenos más apropiados para sus oidos. Sonata Arctica a mi juicio ha abusado de cambio, se ha transformado demasiado, y ahora si recurren a un regreso a sus raices, no se si creer que se debe a una necesidad compositiva, o a una necesidad económica al ver las orejas al lobo. Sea como sea, desde la misma utilización del primer logo, a la promesa de muchos temas power en el proximo LP de 2024, el caso es que la palabra "Power" parece ser el centro de su promoción. En estos días nos dejan el primer adelanto en forma de single, "First In Line", del que dejo un enlace a youtube. Veremos hacia donde caminan al escuchar todo su nuevo material, desde luego al menos tienen que tener el beneficio de la duda aunque sea solo por la primera década llena de momentazos compositivos.

THE  WOLVES  DIE  YOUNG

Poco que decir de este grupo, para lo bueno y para lo malo, y poco que, a nivel personal, no haya dicho ya con anterioridad en el blog, tan solo repetir ese sentimiento de añoranza de tiempos pasados llenos de velocidad y contundencia dentro del power que hicieron suyo muy desde el inicio de su carrera. Siguiendo con esa idea, tiempo hace ya que su sonido se ralentizó demasiado, casi haciendo sentir a los fans de los comienzos de la banda una sensación casi de traición por la necesidad de seguir discfrutando más tiempo de ese concepto, e igualmente, siempre que se intuye que una canción en concreto va en esa línea, aunque sea minimamente se hace un esfuerzo más por ilusionarse con una posible vuelta a los "Ecliptica" y sucesores, algo que por desgracia nunca llega. Sea como fuere la calidad en la banda es innegable y suelen dejar pinceladas de su clase en cada obra, y de la "Pariah Child" de 2014 el single "The wolves die young" muestra esa clase, aún a un nivel más ralentizado, una canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Sonata Arctica - Demon's Cage

DEMON'S  CAGE

 Desde hace ya bastante tiempo parece claro el concepto compositivo que el grupo finlandés Sonata Arctica quiere desarrollar en este momento de su carrera, y por lo que parece este disco "Talviyo" recién salido este 6 de septiembre, en lo que llevo escuchado sigue los mencionados pasos. No quiero tampoco repetir una vez más el mismo argumento, aunque es cierto que los que seguimos a la banda desde el inicio siempre esperaremos los destellos de un "Ecliptica" que me temo que nunca ya retornarán, y quizá lo que toque sea apreciar este nuevo sonido como si fuese una banda nueva, el problema es poder con esa sensación de intuir ese citado sonido en potencia en los temas nuevos pero con menor pegada, como si llevas un coche muy potente solo en segunda, algo un tanto frustrante, la verdad. Y el caso es que en ocasiones como en "Demons Cage", la canción que hoy traigo al blog, uno imagina ese tema a más revoluciones, con la pegada inicial y no puedes más que suspirar con una impotencia que te impide un poco disfrutar de la canción tal como la han dejado, con esos rasgos más progresivos de los "Sonata" de ahora y esa potencia "castrada" a propósito, vaya usted a saber por que. De cualquier manera son unos músicos excelentes, nadie lo dudará ya a estas alturas.

Canciones para una vida - Sonata Arctica - I'm Haunted

I'M  HAUNTED

Ahora que la banda finlandesa "Sonata Arctica" ha anunciado que entran al estudio a grabar el que será su décimo LP de estudio, esperado para el próximo 2019 es un buen momento para echar la vista atrás al material que compone su historia personal, una controvertida historia musical llena de defensores y detractores casi a partes iguales, y en esta ocasión quiero traer al blog una de esas canciones que ilustran lo que digo, hablan de una de esas bandas capaces de lo mejor musicalmente, siempre mezclado con una forma de llevar su carrera de una manera equivocada, quizá con un hambre excesivo de ventas que les ha hecho gestionar sus tiempos mal en mi opinión, demasiados singles, EP's, recopilatorios o directos, sin olvidar algún que otro directo y ediciones especiales japonesas etc que han puesto a prueba en más de una ocasión la paciencia de los seguidores. El cambio estilístico desde los inicios frescos que deslumbraron al planeta metálico al completo al actual estilo más progresivo y personal han hecho que muchos, (entre los que me incluyo), pierdan la fe en lo que pueda venir de la banda. Hoy dejo la reedición del magnífico debut  de la banda "Ecliptica" de 1999, en su versión de la celebración del 15º aniversario de la misma, en su edición japonesa, (muy en la línea Sonata este intento de vender), de donde se puede extraer esta canción inédita "I'm Haunted", buena canción, y poco difundida en general, que una vez más muestra cual sería el camino compositivo apropiado para esta banda, veremos cual será el camino escogido para el próximo material que vendrá.

LIFE

Segundo single de adelanto de la banda finlandesa Sonata Arctica. En más de una ocasión he comentado en el blog mis sensaciones con esta banda, las pasadas y las presentes, y no quiero caer en la repetición una vez más de las mismas ideas, solo diré que en muchos sentidos este par de temas que he escuchado del nuevo disco, "The ninth hour" que espera su salida oficial el 7 de octubre, no son sino una confirmación de las sospechas, para lo bueno y lo malo, en el lado malo, esa eterna sensación que me queda de unos Sonata "a medio gas", es como conducir un Ferrari en segunda, porque claro está, en el lado bueno está la capacidad musical de estos tios, no hay duda de su facilidad para crear melodias ganadoras, y eso es lo que más me duele, la verdad, darme cuenta una vez más de que no habrá otro "Ecliptica", en cuanto a mala uva, contundencia y velocidad, pero seguramente el problema está en mí, así que una vez más trataré de ver la obra como obra en sí, aunque mucho me temo que la alargada sombra de los inicios de Sonata se cernirá sobre mi objetividad para dejar ese poso amargo. En definitiva, un tema fácil, con el sello de los "últimos Sonata Arctica", y del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Sonata Arctica - My Land

MY  LAND

Sonata Arctica es uno de esos grupos que mueven a una legión de seguidores tras ellos, y es normal viendo la calidad de alguna de sus obras. Al hablar de estos finlandeses, siempre se recurre al primer disco, como punto comparativo de su obra, y eso también es normal, aunque en ocasiones pueda resultar injusto, pero es que una obra de semejante calibre es algo difícil de igualar, incluso para ellos, y eso en un grupo puede resultar una pesada losa para toda una carrera. Para mi gusto es un poco lo que les ha sucedido a Sonata Arctica, ya que el éxito les llego en este su primer disco, inmediatamente, y el nivel en él demostrado ha sido muy dificil de mantener. Si a esto añadimos la continua experimentación que parecen buscar con su sonido estos músicos, se entiende que, partiendo de la extraordinaria calidad que atesoran, vayan cosechando tanto apasionados defensores de su música como vehementes detractores de la misma. Yo, sinceramente no se que posición tomar, aunque con los últimos acontecimientos musicales en su carrera me temo que se me esta agotando la paciencia musical con ellos. Pero hoy quiero hacer referencia a la parte inicial de su carrera, y a su irrepetible "Ecliptica" de 1999, su primer larga duración. Sonata Arctica se forma en 1996, bajo el nombre de "Tricky Beans", haciendo una música en onda Hardrock - Pop, grabando solo un puñado de canciones. En 1999, con un estilo ya más influenciado por el power metal de grupos como "Stratovarius" cambian su nombre a "Sonata Arctica", editando su primer single "Unopened" que al instante les dio grandisimas críticas y muchas oportunidades, preludio de lo que sería su "Ecliptica", salido ese mismo año. En seguida se vio lo que sería la carrera de Sonata Arctica, con continuos EP's, singles y recopilaciones, así como directos. Desde luego han sido siempre un buen negocio, y han sabido venderse fenomenalmente bien siendo una buena máquina de hacer dinero, dicho sea sin malicia, me parece perfecto mientras se responda con discos de calidad, el problema viene cuando tu material no responde a las expectativas creadas. 8 discos de estudio han visto la luz bajo el nombre de Sonata Arctica, así como 4 EP's. Como decía antes, hoy quiero traer al blog su primer disco, el irrepetible "Ecliptica", un rotundo éxito a nivel mundial, y por motivos evidentes, las canciones a escoger, todas, difícil decidirse por una. WOLF AND RAVEN

Otra de las obras de estos finlandeses, perteneciente a la época inicial de su carrera musical, me refiero a su "Silence", segundo larga duración de la banda, de 2001. Como ya he dicho en alguna ocasión en nuestro blog, al hablar de Sonata Arctica siempre se recurre al primer disco, como punto comparativo de su obra, y eso es normal, aunque en ocasiones pueda resultar injusto, pero es que una obra de semejante calibre es algo difícil de igualar, incluso para ellos, y eso en un grupo puede resultar una pesada losa para toda una carrera. Para mi gusto es un poco lo que les ha sucedido a Sonata Arctica, ya que el éxito les llego en este su primer disco, inmediatamente, y el nivel en él demostrado ha sido muy difícil de mantener. Si a esto añadimos la continua experimentación que parecen buscar con su sonido estos músicos, se entiende que, partiendo de la extraordinaria calidad que atesoran, vayan cosechando tanto apasionados defensores de su música como vehementes detractores de la misma. Este disco va bastante en la línea del "Ecliptica" al que me refería. Es por lo tanto una gran obra, con la que siguieron abriéndose camino a nivel internacional. De hecho, con la gira que hicieron al presentar este álbum llegaron a tocar en el continente americano por vez primera en su vida, junto con Gamma Ray. En este disco Tony Kakko, vocalista y teclista de Sonata Arctica se centro más en labores de cantante dejando el tema de teclado para Mikko Harkin, procedente de Kenziner, banda de la que hablaremos en este Blog. Mikko pasó a formar parte del grupo en el año 2000 y dejaría la banda en 2002, tras la gira de la que hablaba con Gamma Ray. Será sustituido por Henrik Klingenberg, quien sigue en el grupo en la actualidad. El disco "Silence" tiene muy buenos temas que se pueden destacar, entre ellos este  "Wolf and Raven", primer single de la obra canción de la que dejo un enlace hoy a youtube de su videoclip oficial.

Canciones para una vida - Sonata Arctica - The Gun

THE GUN

Ya hemos hablado en el blog varias veces de esta buena banda finlandesa, y como ya hemos dicho, todos los que hemos seguido la carrera de esta banda sabemos del gusto de Sonata Arctica por hacer versiones de grupos consagrados y de canciones icónicas mediante la edición de EP's, ediciones especiales, bonus tracks o cualquier otro invento para aumentar sus ventas, y la canción que hoy dejo en el blog es un claro ejemplo de este buen hacer a nivel empresarial de esta banda que administra como ninguna las composiciones que realiza para optimizar sus ventas. En esta ocasión se trata del single "Broken", del año 2003, un single perteneciente a su tercer larga duración, "Winterheart's guild", de como digo 2003, y en el que incluyeron este tema inédito, "The Gun", que hoy quiero dejar en el blog. muy hábil por su parte pues se trata de un temazo, con todos los elementos de los mejores Sonata Arctica bajo mi punto de vista que les aseguraba un buen nivel de ventas de cara a toda la gente que nos gusta tener la música original de las bandas que más nos gustan. Además el single aporta otro tema inédito hasta ese momento, "Dream Thieves", así como "Broken"en una versión para radios y la versión del álbum. En realidad no hay nada de malo en intentar venderse, es algo que siempre se ha hecho y siempre se hará, el problema viene cuando se abusa de ello y a uno se le ve el plumero, como ha sucedido con esta banda en más de una ocasión, por ejemplo, en 2004 editan otro EP, del que ya hemos hablado en el blog, "Takatalvi", una especie de recopilatorio de canciones especiales para singles y EP's y versiones, en el que están también incluidas, por ejemplo, las dos canciones extra incluidas en el single que hoy nos ocupa, "Broken de 2003". Un poco excesivo lo veo yo, pero bueno, musicalmente hablando nigún reproche, el tema de hoy es simplemente impecable, una canción que merece la pena ser escuchada y de la que dejo hoy un enlace a youtube.

FLAG IN THE GROUND

 Como ya hemos dicho en alguna ocasión en nuestro blog, al hablar de Sonata Arctica siempre se recurre al primer disco, como punto comparativo de su obra, y eso es normal, aunque en ocasiones pueda resultar injusto, pero es que una obra de semejante calibre es algo difícil de igualar, incluso para ellos, y eso en un grupo puede resultar una pesada losa para toda una carrera. Para mi gusto es un poco lo que les ha sucedido a Sonata Arctica, ya que el éxito les llego en este su primer disco, inmediatamente, y el nivel en él demostrado ha sido muy difícil de mantener. Si a esto añadimos la continua experimentación que parecen buscar con su sonido estos músicos, se entiende que, partiendo de la extraordinaria calidad que atesoran, vayan cosechando tanto apasionados defensores de su música como vehementes detractores de la misma. Todos los que hemos seguido la carrera de esta banda sabemos del gusto de Sonata Arctica por hacer versiones de grupos consagrados y de canciones icónicas mediante la edición de EP's, ediciones especiales, bonus tracks o cualquier otro invento para aumentar sus ventas. En esta ocasión vamos a hablar de su sexta obra de estudio, "The Days of Grays", de 2009, un disco editado a través de "Nuclear Blast", el primero con el guitarrista Elias Viljanen y el primero desde el disco debut de la banda, "Ecliptica" de 1999, en el que el cantante Tony Kakko se encarga también de los teclados. según ellos mismos definen el disco, se trata de una obra un poquito más oscura y no tan compleja como su predecesora de 2007 "Unia". Quiero escoger de esta obra el segundo single, "Flag in the ground", de cuyo videoclip dejo un enlace a youtube.

Como ya hemos dicho en alguna ocasión en nuestro blog, al hablar de Sonata Arctica siempre se recurre al primer disco, como punto comparativo de su obra, y eso es normal, aunque en ocasiones pueda resultar injusto, pero es que una obra de semejante calibre es algo difícil de igualar, incluso para ellos, y eso en un grupo puede resultar una pesada losa para toda una carrera. Para mi gusto es un poco lo que les ha sucedido a Sonata Arctica, ya que el éxito les llego en este su primer disco, inmediatamente, y el nivel en él demostrado ha sido muy difícil de mantener. Si a esto añadimos la continua experimentación que parecen buscar con su sonido estos músicos, se entiende que, partiendo de la extraordinaria calidad que atesoran, vayan cosechando tanto apasionados defensores de su música como vehementes detractores de la misma. Todos los que hemos seguido la carrera de esta banda sabemos del gusto de Sonata Arctica por hacer versiones de grupos consagrados y de canciones icónicas mediante la edición de EP's, ediciones especiales, bonus tracks o cualquier otro invento para aumentar sus ventas. En esta ocasión vamos a hablar de su cuarto larga duración, "Reckoning Night", de 2004, en el que la banda estaba más que asentada, de hecho terminaba contrato con "Spinefarm Records" con el anterior disco "Winterheart's guild" y la lluvia de ofertas para editar su siguiente material, este "Reckoning Night" vino de todos los sellos discográficos más importantes de Europa, optando la banda por firmar con "Nuclear Blast". Otro hito para el grupo fue su elección para abrir para Iron Maiden en su gira de Japón, ahí es nada. Su fama internacional se extendía imparable y es que la banda en esta época estaba en plena forma, sin temas demasiado complejos como ultimamente nos tienen acostumbrados, por aquel entonces su sonido era más cercano al fresco sonido de sus inicios, en mi humilde opinión insuperable en su debut. De este disco podemos destacar muchos y grandes temas. Hoy quiero hacerlo con su canción "Don't say a word", primer single del disco y que es ya un clásico en sus setlists en vivo, un tema del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

En esta ocasión vamos a hablar de una de esas versiones, una de las mejores de la banda para mi gusto, "Fade to black" de Metallica, que aparece en su EP "Takatalvi", de 2003, que cuenta además con otras tres versiones y cuatro temas propios de la banda. Un Ep sacado poco después de su tercer larga duración "Winterheart's Guild", de ese mismo 2003. Quiero pues dejar un enlace a esta buena versión de una extraordinaria canción de Metallica, una mezcla explosiva y muy bien ejecutada de la que dejo un enlace a yotube.

BLACK SHEEP

Otra de las obras de estos finlandeses, perteneciente a la época inicial de su carrera musical, nos referimos a su "Silence", segundo larga duración de la banda, de 2001. Como ya hemos dicho en alguna ocasión en nuestro blog, al hablar de Sonata Arctica siempre se recurre al primer disco, como punto comparativo de su obra, y eso es normal, aunque en ocasiones pueda resultar injusto, pero es que una obra de semejante calibre es algo dificil de igualar, incluso para ellos, y eso en un grupo puede resultar una pesada losa para toda una carrera. Para mi gusto es un poco lo que les ha sucedido a Sonata Arctica, ya que el éxito les llego en este su primer disco, inmediatamente, y el nivel en él demostrado ha sido muy dificil de mantener. Si a esto añadimos la continua experimentación que parecen buscar con su sonido estos músicos, se entiende que, partiendo de la extraordinaria calidad que atesoran, vayan cosechando tanto apasionados defensores de su música como vehementes detractores de la misma. Este disco va bastante en la línea del "Ecliptica" al que me refería. Es por lo tanto una gran obra, con la que siguieron abriendose camino a nivel internacional. De hecho, con la gira que hicieron al presentar este album llegaron a tocar en el continente americano por vez primera en su vida, junto con Gamma Ray. En este disco Tony Kakko, vocalista y teclista de Sonata Arctica se centro más en labores de cantante dejando el tema de teclado para Mikko Harkin, procedente de Kenziner, banda de la que hablaremos en este Blog. Mikko pasó a formar parte del grupo en el año 2000 y dejaría la banda en 2002, tras la gira de la que hablabamos con Gamma Ray. Será sustituido por Henrik Klingenberg, quien sigue en el grupo en la actualidad. El disco "Silence" tiene muy buenos temas que se pueden destacar, entre ellos "Black sheep", canción de la que dejo un enlace hoy a youtube.

Sonata Arctica es uno de esos grupos que mueven a una legión de seguidores tras ellos, y es normal viendo la calidad de alguna de sus obras. Al hablar de estos finlandeses, siempre se recurre al primer disco, como punto comparativo de su obra, y eso también es normal, aunque en ocasiones pueda resultar injusto, pero es que una obra de semejante calibre es algo dificil de igualar, incluso para ellos, y eso en un grupo puede resultar una pesada losa para toda una carrera. Para mi gusto es un poco lo que les ha sucedido a Sonata Arctica, ya que el éxito les llego en este su primer disco, inmediatamente, y el nivel en él demostrado ha sido muy dificil de mantener. Si a esto añadimos la continua experimentación que parecen buscar con su sonido estos músicos, se entiende que, partiendo de la extraordinaria calidad que atesoran, vayan cosechando tanto apasionados defensores de su música como vehementes detractores de la misma. Yo, sinceramente no se que posición tomar, aunque con los ultimos acontecimientos musicales en su carrera me temo que se me esta agotando la paciencia musical con ellos. Pero hoy quiero hacer referencia a la parte inicial de su carrera, y a su irrepetible "Ecliptica" de 1999, su primer larga duración. Sonata Arctica se forma en 1996, bajo el nombre de "Tricky Beans", haciendo una musica en onda Hardrock - Pop, grabando solo un puñado de canciones. En 1999, con un estilo ya más influenciado por el power metal de grupos como "Stratovarius" cambian su nombre a "Sonata Arctica", editando su primer single "Unopened" que al instante les dio grandisimas críticas y muchas oportunidades, preludio de lo que sería su "Ecliptica", salido ese mismo año. En seguida se vio lo que sería la carrera de Sonata Arctica, con continuos EP's, singles y recopilaciones, asi como directos. Desde luego han sido siempre un buen negocio, y han sabido venderse fenomenalmente bien siendo una buena máquina de hacer dinero, dicho sea sin malicia, me parece perfecto mientras se responda con discos de calidad, el problema viene cuando tu material no responde a las expectativas creadas. 8 discos de estudio han visto la luz bajo el nombre de Sonata Arctica, así como 4 EP's. Como decía antes, hoy quiero traer al blog su primer disco, el irrepetible "Ecliptica", un rotundo éxito a nivel mundial, y por motivos evidentes, las canciones a escoger, todas, dificil decidirse por una. Yo dejare hoy un enlace a uno de sus temas más aclamados en directo, su "Fullmoon", que representa bien el espiritu del disco, y del sonido de la parte inicial de la carrera de estos chicos. Canciones para una vida - Sonata Arctica - Alone in Heaven

ALONE IN HEAVEN

Cuando debutaron en 1999 con su álbum Eclíptica causaron un alubión de buenas críticas y se pusieron a sí mismos un listón que para muchos no han vuelto a alcanzar y que les siguen exigiendo disco tras disco. Conocedores de ello, estos finlandeses han decidido reinventarse con cada nuevo disco, de tal modo que nunca sabes con qué te vas a encontrar cada vez que sacan algo nuevo: si con un trallazo de energía que te entra directo desde la primera escucha o con un álbum más conceptual que a veces no sabes por dónde agarrar y a más de uno nos deja tan fríos como la tierra de la que proceden.

Aún así son un grupo al que siempre regreso, y que tiene discos como este Stone Grows Her Name de 2012 que, no sin precisar varias escuchas, me entró y me gusta volver a escuchar de vez en cuando. Aquí os dejo una canción con mucho sentimiento, un poco coñera también, y que, pudiendo parecer una balada, tiene unos cambios de ritmo y una potencia por momentos que me encanta.
