Megadeth - Crush 'Em

CRUSH  'EM 

Acostumbrados a ir a lo suyo, con opiniones de todos lados a lo que hacían y hacen desde el comienzo, los estadounidenses Megadeth en 1999 publicaban su octavo LP de estudio a través de un título, "Risk" en el que daban las pistas de que se iban a salir de los cánones esperados para sus obras, y que siendo conscientes igualmente lo terminarían haciendo. Un disco acogido con opiniones encontradas, (nada nuevo para la banda), pero que fue una exploración que la banda abandonaría para su siguiente y posteriores obras. Más comercial, en incluso electrónico, alejado del thrash inicial, del sonido más pesado que retomarían luego. Rage - Love And Fear Unite

 

LOVE  AND  FEAR  UNITE

Los alemanes Rage son poseedores de una de las más prolíficas carreras en general dentro del heavy metal, una de esas bandas que ha ido atravesando etapas y que ha sido siempre como un reloj suizo a la hora de publicar LP's nunca más allá de dos años de media, y cuando han superado ese tiempo han dejado entre medias material en forma de EP, así, 27 LP's de estudio hablan del poderío de este grupo germano. En 1999 publicaban su décimo cuarto LP de estudio "Ghosts", en su etapa más sinfónica y orquestada, pero que tenía momentos mucho más directos también. Sculpture, (una de las bandas que han escogido este nombre para intentar una carrera), concretamente los germanos, fueron una banda de breve existencia, (solo un par de años, de 1997 a 1999), formados por un ex de Crematory en lo que prometía ser un proyecto consistente con el apoyo además de Nuclear Blast, pero que se quedó en un único album "Sculpure" publicado en 1999, lleno de buenos momentos, para amantes del sonido Crematory como por  ejemplo queda claro en el tema "Over" del que dejo hoy un enlace a youtube.

Therion - Crowning Of Atlantis

THE  CROWNING  OF  ATLANTIS 

Cuando los grandes nombres, las grandes bandas están en lo más alto, en su mejor momento, siempre parece oportuno, sobre todo a sus discográficas, aprovecharlo para exprimir ese momento al máximo. Con los suecos Therion, la década de los noventa fue uno de esos hitos en su carrera, y tras el éxito del album "Vovin" de 1998, la banda pretendía sacar un EP con algún tema compuesto como "Crowning of Atlantis", pero a instancias de Nuclear Blast deciden convertirlo en un LP añadiendo versiones y temas en vivo al material que se pretendía publicar como un EP. Es evidente que la idea de algo así es vieja como la propia música, y Therion cayó de lleno en ello en 1999 con la publicación del citado EP reconvertido en LP. Children Of Bodom - Downfall

 

DOWNFALL 

Esta banda finlandesa Children Of Bodom, es una de esas bandas que trascenderán a su propia existencia, uno de los grupos escogidos para que su nombre se transforme en mito, que ya son, a pesar de seguir en activo en teoría y con la muerte de su lider Alexi para agrandar su caracter mítico, y es que más allá de todo lo que rodea a lo musical, desde ese punto de vista compositivo la capacidad de la banda de hacer música extrema con un potencial masivo es asombrosa, siempre lo ha sido. En 1999 publicaban su segundo LP de estudio "Hatebreeder" del que hoy quiero dejar en el blog una nueva canción, "Downfall" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Gladiators - Child Of The Dark - Canciones Para Una Vida

CHILD  OF  THE  DARK 

Desde comienzos de los 90, las bandas que empezaban y querían desarrollar su sonido al calor del heavy clásico se debían plantear como dar un giro a su sonido para no sonar desfasados, se había estado ya unos años huyendo del heavy metal de la vieja escuela, y la opción más lógica parecía enrolarse en el por entonces novedoso power metal, solo un par de cambios aquí y allá y realmente se tenía un concepto heavy pero más lustroso y vendible, avanzaba igualmente la tecnología y eso se notaba en cuestiones productivas. En ese caldo de cultivo surgen muchos grupos que con mejor o pero suerte lo intentaron, algunos muy desconocidos como estos alemanes, "Gladiators", formados en 1990 y que solo se mantuvieron en activo una década editando dos LP's de estudio a finales de los 90, (98 y 99). Su segundo LP, y a la postre el último llevaba por título "Bound To steel" y de él quiero dejar hoy ene l blog un enlace a youtube de una de sus canciones, "Child of the dark".

Vision Divine - Vision Divine - Canciones Para Una Vida

VISION  DIVINE 

La parte final de los noventa y el comienzo de los 2000 fue una de esas épocas doradas para el power en general, sobre todo el de tendencia u origen europeo, y particularmente la escena italiana tuvo un boom tras el éxito cosechado por Rhapsody y todas las bandas que surgieron en dicha escena en ese momento. La escena, que lo sabía, aprovechaba para explotar los nombres incipientes y asentados, era el momento de diversificar y aprovechar el tirón, y así surgen bandas como Vision Divine o Labyrith, donde Lione promocionaba directamente con el nombre y la calidad innegable de vocalista a lo que se unia la composición siempre acertada de Olaf Thorsen para crear un producto muy fácil de vender en el momento. el primer disco de Vision Divine de identico título se publica en 1999 y de él dejo hoy en el blog otro de sus temas, igualmente "Vision Divine" del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Angel Dust - Surrender? - Canciones Para Una Vida

SURRENDER?

Los alemanes Angel Dust son otra de esas bandas que dejan el regusto en la boca de poder haber llegado a mucho más y haber dejado su carrera un tanto "abandonada" demasiado pronto, a pesar de que desde 2016 en adelante parecen haberse reactivado eso si, sin ningún material de estudio nuevo para certificarlo, es además una banda que ha evolucionado su sonido, desde un inicio con tintes más thrash hacia un sonido más power melódico a finales de su periodo compositivo, formados en 1984 su primer parón se produce en 1990, luego reactivación entre 1997 y 2011 y tras otro parón, reactivación de nuevo desde 2016 como decía más arriba, carrera por lo tanto irregular que de momento, a fecha de esta reseña ha dejado el fruto de seis LP's de estudio, el último de ellos de 2002, y hoy quiero resuperar una de las canciones de su cuarto disco "Bleed", de 1999, en una clave más power ya, concretamente la canción "Surrender?", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Morifade - Possession Of Power & Ancient Prophecy

 

POSSESSION  OF  POWER  &  ANCIENT  PROPHECY

A finales de los 90 y principios de los 2000, en ese momento tan bueno para la propuesta épico fantástica euro power metalera, se estilaba mucho la utilización de elementos digamos ornamentales para complementar lo que era la música en sí, de esta manera las narraciones eran parte habitual de muchas bandas que en ocasiones terminaban incluso por abusar de ellas, haciendo de la virtud de su uso concreto algo menos bueno que terminaba espantando a muchos de la escucha de obras completas por tal motivo. Es cierto que ese toque digamos extra, podía dar una dimensión más profunda a obras conceptuales o no, pero que requerían de un contexto que explicase su hilo conductor, pero en ocasiones daban ganas de saltarlas para llegar al meollo de la cuestión. Hoy he querido ilustrar lo dicho a través de uno de los temas de la primera de las obras en formato LP de los suecos Morifade, que tan bien se desempeñaron en la citada época de finales de los 90 e inicios de los 2000, dejando esta intro de la obra añadiendole el tema final de la misma pero sin la "chachara" del inicio, quizá en una de esas ocasiones en que este gran tema, "Ancient Prophecy" tema puede perder efectividad por tal cuetión, una canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - At Vance - Seven Seas

 

SEVEN  SEAS

Vamos hoy con un poco de power clásico, este facturado con la innegable influencia del sonido que se denominó neo clasico, con un regusto por lo tanto barroco, elaborado, un sonido cuidado, de la factoría sueca, en estaba resurgiendo con fuerza a través de muchas bandas en ese momento. Hablamos de At Vance, y de su debut, "No escape" de 1999, un disco que ponía bajo los focos sobre todo a su vocalista Oliver Hartmann, que durante el lustro siguiente sería una pieza recurrente en colaboraciones diversas y sonadas, (algunas del calibre de Avantasia). Por encima de todo la obra destila calidad, y en lo sonoro, por ejemplo en el tema que hoy dejo en el blog, "Seven Seas", vemos reminiscencias de Axel Rudi Pell por ejemplo, un aire a ciertos momentos de Yngwie en sus temas más veloces pero con mayor sentido melódico, suenan a At Vance en definitiva, y sus cuatro primeras obras para mi gusto son las mejores. Canciones para una vida - Iron Savior - Deadly Sleep

 

DEADLY  SLEEP

El segundo Lp de los germanos Iron Savior es la obra de confirmación sin duda alguna de la banda, tras un debut que sabía a muchas cosas, entre ellas a deudas pagadas, a finalmente dar el paso al frente, casi a homenaje, ya que muchas veces he comentado en el blog la historia de Iron Savior, lo que es sinónimo de Piet Sielk, y la importancia de ese nombre en el mundillo, su unión con nombres del calibre de Kai Hansen o Helloween, algo que hoy no volveré a repetir, y como tras esa toma de contacto con la escena internacional con la consiguiente buena acogida por las críticas tocaba confirmar a través de "Unification" un par de años después, (1999), todo aquel buen sabor de boca, y vaya si lo hicieron, con menor sensación de homenaje, presentación o pago de deudas, la banda encontraba la confianza para hacer una apuesta presonal que aún dura y esperemos que por mucho tiempo siga siendo así. De esta segunda obra, con la banda consolidada, las ideas claras y la crítica a su favor dejo hoy otro de sus temas, en esta ocasión "Deadly Sleep" a pesar de que haya sobrevolado sobre el tema esa sombra de duda plagiando a los Maiden, de todas maneras dejo un enlace a youtube del temazo.

Canciones para una vida - Afterworld - To The Afterworld

 

TO  THE  AFTERWORLD

Con la explosión de bandas que aparecieron en el planeta al calor del power metal desde mediados de los 90, particularmente centrandonos en la vertiente europea de dicho surgimiento, es evidente que se saturó la escena internacional, y muchos grupos en las diversas escenas de cada país quedaron relegados a un papel testimonial, más allá de las aptitudes que poseyesen, hoy me quiero referir a una banda que cumple esas premisas, los finlandeses "Afterworld" quienes desarrollaron una corta carrera entre 1993 y 2000, editando un par de obras de estudio, como digo enmarcadas en el sonido euro power, que por cierto desde 2015 han supuestamente vuleto a poner en marcha su proyecto aunque de momento sin noticias compositivas nuevas. Hablamos de una banda en la que figura algún nombre de la escena clásiquísima finlandesa, (Riff Raff), y donde merodea la mano productiva de Tolkki. Hablamos de calidad, pero por supuesto en ese momento eclipsada por los grandes nombres del momento que ejercían de reyes Midas sobre otros proyectos que surgían por doquier, ya el oyente se volvia más exigente o cómodo y en no pocas ocasiones iba a los grandes nombres o a las figuras conocidas en sus proyectos, algo que por otra parte no ha dejado nunca de pasar lo que es una pena tanto para las bandas con menos recursos o renombre como para la riqueza de bandas que un metalhead medio puede gestionar si no se lo curra un poco investigando. El caso es que "Afterworld" sorprenderá gratamente a más de un consumidor de power metal noventero, y su primer album "Dark side of mind", de 1999, es la excusa hoy para dejar un tema en el blog, concretamente "To the afterworld" del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Gamma Ray - Short As Hell

 

SHORT  AS  HELL

No hay duda tanto de la calidad musical de Hansen, como de su versatilidad, capacidad experimentadora o ausencia de miedo para tener ese enfoque desenfadado que al final siempre termina enriqueciendo las obras en que está presente, es uno de esos músicos tocados por el destino para hacer casi lo que desee, y eso es algo que también en el disco "Powerplant" de 1999 con su banda Gamma Ray está presente, por ejemplo en la canción que hoy dejo en el blog, "Short As Hell", donde vemos reminiscencias un tanto fuera de la estructura compositiva normal o esperable, con un toque casi de Metallica, de los de comienzos de los 90 más bien, quedando patente esa mencionada capacidad camaleónica del músico. Canciones para una vida - Crimson Glory - Astronomica

 

ASTRONOMICA

Los estadounidenses Crimson Glory son una de esas bandas que han llevado de la mano desde casi el comienzo de su carrera un aura casi de banda de culto, de esas que se reconocen más a posteriori, casi demasiado tarde, y desde luego cuyo éxito no se tradujo en ventas. Igualmente siempre se les ha reconocido su mérito a nivel individual, como músicos talentosos y de enrome capacidad y al fin, han sido banda influyente para otras, con todos los ogredientes de las grandes bandas, salida de miembros a priori indispensables, (Midnight a la voz), una etapa más mítica como fue la inicial en los 80 con sus dos primeras obras, una etapa pre separación más criticada antes de la salida de Midnight, y una segunda actividad con cambio de vocalista en la que hoy estamos, "Astronomica" de 1999, el cuarto LP con Wade Black. Los tópicos en estos casos, que si Wade no estaba al nivel de Midnight, que si Midnight comenzaba su carrera en solitario, solo que todo ello siempre tengo la sensación de que estaba cocinado a medio gas, es decir más underground, reconociendo sin duda y por supuesto la calidad de los yankees. En definitiva, más allá de los cambios, del significado de esta obra dentro de la carrera de la banda estamos ante un disco bastante decente, de buen nivel general, siempre con ese heavy power progresivo como objetivo sobradamente cumplido y de esta obra quiero hoy dejar en el blog la canción que da nombre a la obra, "Astronomica", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - U.D.O. - Back Off

 

BACK  OFF

Durante toda la década de los 90, todos aquellos que crecimos metálicamente con la imagen de Accept como la de uno de los grupos míticos, esenciales, influyentes, necesarios, nos sentimos un poco huerfanos por su cambio de timón y su periodo inactivo y es que la salida de UDO a finales de los 80 fue un hecho del que les costó mucho rehacerse. La parte buena es que finalmente lo lograron y que además la carrera de UDO con su propia banda era un sucedaneo perfecto de Accept que consolaba la ausencia de la banda al mejor nivel. La carrera del vocalista además en los 90 iba viento en popa sacando buenas obras que llenaban el citado hueco. En 1999 editaron "Holy" que suponía ya el séptimo LP de estudio del grupo, totalmente consolidados y mostrandose como uno de los perpetuadores del sonido heavy metal más clásico en esa dificil época de cambios, ellos seguían siendo una constante. De este LP quiero hoy dejar en el blog un ejempo de ese sonido mencionado, "Back Off", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Steel Attack - Dragon's Skull

 

DRAGON'S  SKULL

Una banda más en el universo power europeo, en esta ocasión de origen sueco, nacida en 1997 y que mantuvo su actividad hasta 2008 en que publicaron su último material de estudio, completando en sus años en activo un total  de seis LP's. Hablamos de esa época entre finales de los 90 y comienzos de los 2000 en que el subgénero power abundaba en escenas como la europea, con una casi saturación de la escena que hacía que muchas bandas apenas tuvieran repercusión eclipsadas por los grandes nombres. A lo largo de su carrera la banda cambió bastante de miembros en varios puestos e igualmente variaron su concepto compositivo aunque quedándose siempre dentro del power. Su primera obra fue "Where mankind fails" de 1999 y de ella hoy quiero dejar en el blog uno de sus temas, "Dragon's Skull", muy en esa onda esperable de ese año, un power de temática fantástica, con ese toque melódico y muy europeo, canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - White Skull - The Quest & Tales From The North

 

THE  QUEST  &  TALES  FROM  THE  NORTH

Otro grupo más que supo aprovechar el tirón del power italiano de los 90 y los 2000 fueron White Skull, para mi gusto otra de las bandas junto con Domine con más cualidades, y que siendo justos comenzaron su carrera antes que Rhapsody, aunque desde luego, y como no podía ser de otra manera estos terminarían eclipsando a todos los demás compatriotas que iban en la misma línea por motivos evidentes. White Skull se formaron en 1988 aunque hasta casi una década después, (en 1995) no editaron su primer material en forma de LP. Hoy quiero retornar a su tercer LP de estudio para dejar en el blog otra de sus canciones. Este "Tales of the north" de 1999, por muchos motivos, algunos personales, es la obra que más me gusta de la banda, dentro de los gustos Power es un disco absolutamente recomendable, y hoy quiero dejar en el blog la canción que da nombre a la obra junto con la intro que la abre, un temazo con el toque adicional de Chris Boltendhal de Grave Digger para complementarse de forma casi perfecta con la voz poderosa de Federica, canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Domine - Anthem & Thunderstorm

 

ANTHEM  &  THUNDERSTORM

Siguiendo una vez más con el tipo de banda psudo "Rhapsodicos" volvemos a uno de los mejores en mi humilde opinión, los también italianos "Domine" que dejaron un quinteto de obras de estudio, de las que sobre todo las cuatro últimas son espectaculares, y que desde lo meramente compositivo hasta la ejecución de esas composiciones hablan de una banda que hizo las cosas francamente bien, en cada apartado, mereciendo también mayor suerte. Se supone que la banda sigue en activo, (ojala), pero desde 2007 no dan señales de vida compositiva. Uno de los disco que me parecen increiblemente buenos fue el segundo de la banda, "Dragonlord (tales of the noble steel)", de 1999, donde la historia lírica versa sobre la literatura fantástica de Michael Moorcock, que sería la línea argumental general de toda su obra, y que presenta momentos brillantes y épicos como por ejemplo su inicio através de la intro épica "Anthem" que engancha con un temazo "Thunderstorm" de contundente power épico, con todos los ingredientes, coros, etc, canción de las que te enchufan a la obra directamente y de la que dejo un enlace a  youtube. Domine, sin duda uno de los mejores en lo suyo, que esperemos que algún dia nos regalen un capitulo más de su visión musical.

Canciones para una vida - Zanister - We Will Bring Glory Tonight

 

WE  WILL  BRING  GLORY  TONIGHT

La historia de los grupos formados por reunión de miembros de otras bandas, o incluso impulsados por algunas discográficas para unir las fuerzas de músicos de renombre es una historia muy vieja, ya muy inventada y recurrente, y hoy quiero traer al blog otro de esos proyectos, en este caso de origen estadounidense y girando en torno sobre todo a la figura de David T. Chastain, guitarrista y compositor. En esta ocasión la banda creada se llamó "Zanister", y desarrollo una breve incursión de apenas tres o cuatro años en la escena para editar dos LP's, uno en 1999 "Symphonica Millennia" y la segunda en 2001 "fear no man". Hablamos, igualmente de un marco sonoro en el heavy metal, un tanto "Powerizado", un tanto "neoclasiquillo" , y con ciertos toques leves entre el progresivo y el Shred. El resultado, metiendo entre los ingredientes una buena composición y ejecución así como una buena producción es una interesante pareja de obras que merece la pena dedicarse a descubrir. De la primera de ellas, "Symphonia Millennia" del 99 quiero dejar hoy en el blog una de sus canciones, "we will bring glory tonight" de la que dejo un enlacea youtube. Heavy speed americano de alto nivel.

Canciones para una vida - Gamma Ray - Anywhere In The Galaxy

 

ANYWHERE  IN  THE  GALAXY

No podía faltar uno de los jefes de esto a su cita con el final de siglo pasado a la hora de editar un disco, me refiero por supuesto a Kai Hansen con sus Gamma Ray y su disco "Power Plant" de 1999, y digo que no podía faltar puesto que la parte final de los 90 del siglo pasado fue sin duda un festival continuo de obras maestras dentro del género del power metal, sobre todo de composición europea, y de ello sabe, y mucho el citado Kai Hansen, prácticamente el padre del subgénero y parte importante de ese nutrido tesoro de LP's memorables de la década con sus Gamma Ray. "Power Plant" pondría el colofón perfecto a ese siglo en un derroche de todas las virtudes compositivas e interpretativas de los alemanes Gamma Ray. El disco es esa demostración de que el señor Hansen sabe lo que se hace y sin duda algún día recibirá toda la importancia que merece, si no lo ha hecho ya. De la obra de 1999 destacar solo un tema es injustisimo, pero hoy quiero hacerlo con el tema que abre la misma, "Anywhere in the galaxy" toda una demostración de power en poco más de seis minutos, canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.
