La leyenda de Deep Purple es de las más alargadas, de las más reconocidas de forma unánime, de las más influyentes, y es que, haciendo un recorrido por su discografía, y solo atendiendo a la magnitud de los músicos que alguna vez se han entrelazado bajo ese nombre no puede ser de otra manera. En los setenta no era raro que las bandas lanzaran hasta un par de obras en el mismo año. En 1974 Deep Purple lo hizo, una de ellas, "burn" ponía de largo a una parte nueva en la formación, David Coverdale y Glenn Hughes tras la salida de Ian Gillan y Roger Glover. Temas superconocidos de este disco han entrado a formar parte de la historia de nuestro sonido, como el tema que le da nombre, otros. más desconocidos son siempre una buena forma de ver el sendero compositivo de la banda y en definitiva la magnitud del grupo. Siempre uno, al buscar los pioneros de nuestro sonido, aquellos que fueron artífices de las raices mismas del heavy metal, va con esa sensación de que encontrará pinceladas de los que luego sería el heavy metal, detalles en los que luego otros se apoyarían, como una especie de sopa primigenia de la que germinaría un sonido más reconocible ya en los 80, pero no todo lo que encontramos en los 70 es tan pre heavy, hay algunas bandas que en esos últimos años de la década ya sonaban absolutamente heavy, uno de esos grupos fueron Riot. Los de Reale, adelantados a su época, paridos por la escena estadounidense, debutaron en 1979 con el disco "Rock City", una auténtica maravilla histórica y compositivamente hablando, y del que hoy quiero dejar en el blog otra de sus canciones, hoy la que dio nombre a la obra, "Rock city" y de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Scorpions - Fly People Fly

FLY  PEOPLE  FLY 

Scorpions, una vez más una de esas bandas sobre la que todos parecen tener una opinión inamovible, para bien o para mal, y es que cuando un grupo se transforma en un fenómeno de masas sucede que todos creen saberlo todo o creen tener todos los derechos sobre el grupo. Sea cual sea la opinión que uno pueda tener del grupo el hecho objetivo es que es una de las grandes bandas a nivel mundial (no solo dentro del mundo metálico), sus cifras les avalan, pero existe una historia tras la banda, una evolución, una apertura de senderos para los que vendrían detrás, una en definitiva, seria contribución a desarrollar el sonido heavy que hoy disfrutamos, por eso hoy de nuevo vuelvo la cabeza a su discografía inicial, en concreto a su segundo disco "Fly to the rainbow" de 1974, obra que les puso en el camino del sonido que la banda cultivaría en adelante tras su debut de 1972 mucho más orientado al sonido psicodélico tan de moda en ese momento. La evolución hacia un sonido más hard rockero vendría también de la mano de la incorporación a la banda del guitarrista Uli John Roth para esta obra. Dirty Tricks - Play Dirty

PLAY  DIRTY 

De vuelta a las mismisimas raices de lo que sería luego el heavy metal, que bebería de multiples influencias, teniendo cabida incluso el hard bluesero, cada matiz, cada detalle enriquecía un sonido que estaba en plena construcción a mitad de los setenta. En este marco encontramos a la banda británica Dirty Tricks, que sacaría tres discos de estudio en esos años poniendo su granito de arena al sonido que vendría. En 1976 publicaban su segundo LP "Night Man", con ese sonido a mitad de camino del hard rock bluesero, del sonido incluso Psicodélico y del protoheavy del momento. Cheap Trick - Gonna Raise Hell

GONNA  RAISE  HELL 

Una de las formas de formar parte de la historia del heavy metal es sin duda haber sido parte del engranaje incial de lo que luego llegaría a ser el sonido, aunque sea desde una perspectiva más hard rockera pero reconocidamente  por nombres importantísimos del posterior heavy metal, (Helloween, Blind Guardian o Dragonforce por ejemplo) que los destacan como importante influencia en sus inicios como bandas. Hablamos de los estadounidenses Cheap Trick, formados en 1974, con 21 albumes de estudio en su discografía y que siempre se movío compositivamente en ese filo cambiante del hard rock, el rock, power rock o incluso glam. Así pues desde esa perspectiva influencial, tiene cabida en el blog traer algún tema de la banda, en concreto de su cuarto disco "Dream Police" de 1979, quiero dejar en el blog su canción "Gonna Raise Hell", con un aire experimental y una concepción vocal muy a lo Kiss, tema del que dejo un enlace a youtube. Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven

  

STAIRWAY  TO  HEAVEN  

Partamos de la base de que Led Zeppelin no puede considerarse concretamente heavy metal, pero como precursores en lo suyo, son sin duda una banda fundamental para entender el todo, ellos más desde una perspectiva hard rockera, pero es que estamos hablando aún de la década de los sesenta y del inicio de los setenta. Su primer material pues es altamente influyente en lo que hicieron muchos después, algunos centrandose más en el sonido heavy, El cuarto disco de esto británicos se publicó en 1971, "IV", o "Led Zeppelin IV" al ser un disco sin título realmente, y de esa obra quiero dejar en el blog una de esas canciones que son parte de la historia de la música en general, la magnífica "Stairway to heaven", con su lento inicio, pausado y místico, acústico, para luego acelerar el paso y la furia, una fórmula que luego se ha usado mucho y que personalmente suele ser de mi agrado. Rush - The Trees

THE  TREES 

Cuando uno mira a las raíces mismas suele encontrarse con bandas fundamentales sobre todo para entender el conjunto, es lo que tiene ser pionero, abrir camino y ser faro para los que luego vienen y reinterpretan y continúan ese legado. Rush, la leyenda canadiense es una de esas bandas, en este caso en la vertiente progresiva, con 19 LP's de estudio en su discografía de la que quiero rescatar hoy su sexto LP para recuperar la canción "The Trees". Hablamos del año 1978, de su disco "Hemispheres" donde ese aire progresivo brilla con luz propia una vez más. Dejo un enlace a youtube de este tema.

Al remontarnos a los origenes mismos del heavy metal, cuando aún tantas cosas estaban por definirse, por llegar, cuando los límites eran muy difusos, es facil tomar parte por unos o por otros, pero personalmente a mí siempre me ha parecido que la primera banda en sonar totalmente heavy, al menos trascendiendo su sonido al de la siguiente década, siendo en esto adelantados a su época fueron Judas, habrá bandas anteriores que pusieran bases antes que ellos, sin duda, pero ellos lograron sonar heavy en conjunto casi antes que nadie. En 1978 editaron dos LP's, uno de ellos "Killing Machine" otro pedazo de historia metálica, y de esa obra dejo hoy en el blog su "Hell bent for leather" un clásicazo del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Uriah Heep - Bird Of Prey

BIRD  OF  PREY

De vuelta a los orígenes, tan necesarios para entender el conjunto que es un todo, antes y ahora, desde luego los dos focos principales de aquella época del incipiente nacimiento del heavy metal destacaban sobre todos los demás, el estadounidense y el británico, y de este último, mirando al inicio de los inicios traigo hoy al blog de nuevo a Uriah Heep, que en 1971 publicaban su segundo LP de estudio "Salisbury", hogar sonoro de unos de esos temas icónicos de la misma música, como fue "Lady in black" tan importante, tan versionado, pero hogar igualmente de otros temas como "Bird of prey" que hablan del nivelón del album, una canción de la que dejo hoy en el blog un enlace a youtube.

Los británicos UFO, una institución dentro del hard rock y proto heavy metal de los comienzos mismos de nuestro sonido, una de las piezas fundamentales para entender lo que vendría después. Formados en 1968, desde 1970 comienzan a publicar LP's y para 1974, en su tercer LP, "Phenomenon", dan la Bienvenida al guitarrista alemán Schenker, por entonces jovencísimo, solo 19 años, que resultaría decisivo en composición e interpretación desde ese mismo album en adelante. Magnum - Kingdom Of Madness

KINGDOM  OF  MADNESS 

Uno de los datos que deben evitar dudar sobre la magnitud de la banda británica Magnum, es el de su longevidad, la fecha de su debut, 1978, a través de la obra "Kingdom Of Madness", así pues, hablamos de uno de esos llamados pioneros, estos desde una vertiente más hard rockera, en sus inicios incluso progresivos, pero siempre importantes, influyentes, históricos y ahora que ya se han separado, para muchos míticos. Teaze - Heartless World

HEARTLESS  WORLD 

Nueva mirada a tiempos pasados, a los orígenes de nuestro sonido, en un momento en el que todo se gestaba, desde las diferentes miradas y matices, todo estaba aún por hacer y muchas bandas de muchas nacionalidades ponían su granito de arena para dar forma a lo que luego sería denominado como Heavy Metal. Hoy desde la perspectiva del hard 'n heavy primigenio y desde la escena canadiense, traigo al blog a la banda "Teaze", que tuvo una breve carrera de poco más de un lustro, antes de separarse, en este caso y entre otros motivos por la decisión de su cantante de dejar la música para buscar una vida más religiosa. Tema clasicote para hoy, de una banda eterna y clásica igualmente, fundamental y a la que si ya no tenía suficiente misticismo para el metalhead prototípico, la aún reciente e impactante  muerte de Ozzy a terminado de elevarles al siguiente nivel. 1970, la segunda obra de estudio de la banda, su disco más vendido, uno de los más ensalzados, temas eternos y clásicos como este "War Pigs" del que dejo hoy un enlace a youtube.

Thin Lizzy - Roisin Dubh (Black Rose)

ROISIN  DUBH  (BLACK  ROSE) 

Para muchos uno de los albumes más icónicos de la banda irlandesa Thin Lizzy fue su noveno LP de estudio "Black Rose" publicado en 1979. Se trata de el album con el que alcanzaron su puesto más alto en las listas de ventas, el único en el que el guitarrista Gary Moore tuvo dedicación a tiempo completo con la banda, y un disco que recurrió abiertamente a ese influjo folk irlandés plasmado en alguna de las composiciones, como en el tema que dio nombre a la obra "(Black Rose) Roisin Dubh" que fue en parte un mix de canciones folclóricas irlandesas con alguna como "Danny Boy" formando parte de la misma, un tema del que hoy dejo en el blog un enlace a youtube.

Queen - We Will Rock You

WE  WILL  ROCK  YOU 

Desde luego relacionar la música de Queen (en general y en su conjunto) con las raices del heavy metal es sin duda un asunto cogido por los pelos, pero si miramos al material inicial de la banda, y tenemos en cuenta los inicios de nuestro sonido en una variación del rock que por evolución natural terminaría dando vida al heavy metal, traer algo del material de los británicos Queen no parece tan descabellado, sobre todo acudiendo a temas icónicos como el que hoy nos ocupa, "We will rock you", de su sexto LP de estudio "News of the workd" de 1977, un tema que resume bien como enfocar una idea simple puede dar los mejores resultados como aquí sucedió, y es que el bueno de Brian May se inspiró en los cotidianos cantos futboleros del momento para aislar su efectividad ante una respuesta colectiva, masiva, en la que la propia simpleza es parte importante del éxito, es lo que viene a ser diseñar un tema coreable para el directo y eficaz, si a eso le añades la brevedad y un no menos breve aunque absolutamente enganchón punteo de guitarra para cerrar el tema solo puedes tener la receta del éxito. dejo hoy en el blog un enlace a youtube del clip oficial de este "We will rock you" de 1977, al fin y al cabo estoy absolutamente convencido de que a más de un grupo de heavy posterior y actual le habrá inspirado un tema tan eterno como este.

Judas Priest - The Ripper

THE  RIPPER 

A estas alturas de la película no debería haber nadie que no viese a Judas como lo que son, un ejemplo fundamental dentro del heavy metal como tal y sin duda alguna una de las primeras bandas en esgrimir un sonido completamente reconocible y calificable de heavy metal tal cual, un buen ejemplo fue su segundo disco "Sad wings of destiny" de 1976 que en un principio no cosecharía un gran reconocimiento internacional, de lo que se puede intuir lo innovador de su sonido para la época, al final en esos años, aún en pañales, el heavy metal deba sus primeros pasoa todavía, y Judas aquí logró sacarse de la manga un disco lleno de temas que se podrían poner como ejemplo de como hacer heavy metal, sin ir más lejos el que dejo hoy en el blog perteneciente a esta obra, "The Ripper", del que dejo un enlace a youtube de su clip oficial.

Goddo - Too Much Carousing

 

TOO  MUCH  CAROUSING

Ya que de nuevo estamos en plan raíces de nuestro sonido dejaré en el blog otra banda de las que pusieron su granito de arena a que el heavy llegase a ser lo que ha sido y es, se trata de los canadienses Goddo, que se forma en Ontario en 1975, orientados en parte al rock, pero también denotanto ese ritmo más pesado que en el momento era el proto heavy metal incipiente, como siempre digo los saltos de un subgénero a otro no siempre están claros, los límites son difusos y muchas bandas trasgreden esas líneas a su antojo. La mayor parte de la carrera de la banda se produce en la década de los 70 separándose en 1983. luego algunas reuniones del grupo dan como fruto un cuarto album en 1992, los otros tres datan de 1977, 78 y 79. Su segundo LP se tituló "Who Cares" y de él dejo hoy en el blog el tema que lo cierra, "Too much carousing" del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Motörhead - Dead Men Tell No Tales

DEAD  MEN  TELL  NO  TALES 

Otra banda de esas que se antojan fundamentales para entender el heavy metal en su conjunto, sobre todo con la importante carga histórica de considerarseles pioneros, al ser anteriores a la NWOBHM, tuvieron sin duda parte en la influencia hacia bandas más jovenes que aparecerían en el citado movimiento. Con un sonido un tanto sucio, más punk, es un grupo que a decir verdad nunca terminó de ser de mis preferidos, pero desde luego jamás cuestioné su importancia. La muerte de Lemmy, hace ya diez años, les termina de ascender a la figura de mito, y su carrera larga, llena de reconocimientos hace que así deba ser. Hoy quiero recuperar un tema de su primera parte de carrera, concretamente de su tercer LP de estudio "Bomber", disco de 1979, y del que dejo en el blog su canción "Dead men tell no tales", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube de su clip oficial.

Triumph - Rock 'N Roll Machine - Canciones Para Una Vida

  

ROCK  'N  ROLL  MACHINE

Los canadienses Triumph son un ejemplo más de lo delgada que puede ser la línea entre el hard rock y el heavy, y son una de esas bandas que flirtearon con ese sonido, sobre todo en la parte inicial de su carrera cuando incluso el sonido heavy estaba aún por definirse y explotar, y es que los canadienses comenzaron como banda en 1975, y con un periodo de actividad hasta el presente realmente a nivel compositivo se les puede seguir la pista hasta mitad de los 90. Cosschan un notable éxito de ventas muy desde el inicio, y hoy quiero dejar en el blog una de las canciones de su segundo album de estudio, "Rock 'n roll machine" de 1977, como decía más arriba en sus momentos más hard 'n heavy como en el tema que da nombre a la obra y del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Silence - Devil Woman - Canciones Para Una Vida

DEVIL  WOMAN 

De nuevo otro ejemplo de los inicios de nuestro amado sonido, una vez más inicios de los 70 (1971) para comprobar que ceñirnos a los tópicos de los nombres más conocidos y reconocidos no resulta del todo justo, al final siempre defenderé que el heavy metal nace de muchas cosas diferentes, en muchos puntos diferentes para dar lugar a toda una corriente evolutiva que explotaría definitivamente con la llegada de la década de los ochenta. En esta ocasión un single suelto, de una banda a la que no conozco nada más editado, los holandeses Silence, su single "Mother's game Devil Woman" de 1971, con ese innegable origen sonoro hard rockero evolucionando a algo más contundente, proto heavy, germen global en los setenta, del que dejo la canción "Devil Woman", más historia hoy en el blog.
