TONIGHT  WE  RIDE

Vamos de nuevo con la banda estadounidense Warrior, uno de esos grupos que han tenido una carrera irregular, muy dispersa a lo largo de sus varias épocas de actividad con largos parones entre obras, demasiado escasas para lo que la calidad de grupo demanda, uno de esos grupos hacia los que es inevitable lamentar que no hayan tenido mayor constancia compositiva, ya desde el enorme debut de 1985 "Fighting for the earth" dejaron muy claro su potencial. Cuatro son en totla los discos del grupo, el segundo de ellos llegaría trece años después del debut, "Ancient Future" de 1998, una obra que ponía de nuevo el foco sobre ellos aunque apenas cambiaría su dinámica compositiva, y un disco en el que podemos encontrar canciones como este "Tonight we ride" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Narnia - Dangerous Game

DANGEROUS  GAME

Rescatemos el segundo album de estudio de los suecos Narnia, remontandonos por lo tanto a finales de los 90, (1998) un momento en el que el power de corte europeo vivía su mejor momento por cantidad y calidad de bandas, y una de las canteras obligatorias del momento era la sueca que, a través de Narnia, explotaba esa versión sonora del power que gustaba del sonido neoclásico, que también popularizaba en ese momento por ejemplo At Vance. Era evidente que Narnia tenía todos los requisitos para resultar ser una banda importante, desde lo compositivo hasta lo interpretativo, pasando por lo técnico con una producción de nivel. Ya su debut deslumbró a muchos y este segundo esfuerzo era una confirmación con temas como "Dangerous game" por ejemplo, del que dejo hoy un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Labyrinth - State Of Grace

 

STATE  OF  GRACE

La escena italiana de los 90 desde luego explotó a nivel internacional con la adaptación tan personal que las bandas transalpinas hicieron del euro power, dando ese toque sinfónico de ambición épica y fantástica que encabezaron por supuesto los inevitables Rhapsody y que imitaron tantas bandas no solo dentro de sus fronteras sino también en el resto del planeta. Pero no toda la escena italiana se nutría de ese tipo de bandas, y una de las más prematuras en tomar una dirección diferente fue Labyrinth, su concepto power se basaba más bien en elementos progresivos, y en un heavy metal de corte alemán que se reflejaba incluso en los nombres que los artistas se pusieron, todos de aire germano o al menos anglosajón. El caso es que enseguida lograron atraer el foco internacional sobre si mismos, buenas críticas, merecidas, les daba la cabeza compartida del power italiano junto con Rhapsody. En 1998 su segundo LP daba un paso más en la buena dirección, un album completo, tanto técnica como compositivamente hablando, variado y demostrativo de la capacidad de estos músicos que siguen hoy en día en activo. KISS  OF  DEATH

Si la década de los ochenta para esta banda fue la de la furia speedica que les hizo encontrar su senda progresivamente en lo que a temátca compositiva se refiere, la de los noventa fue la del mantenimeinto del heavy metal estandar que en tan pocos bastiones encontró defensa en esos complicados años, uno de dichos bastiones fueron estos chicos. Además, se termina de dar forma al sello que más se pudo reconocer de la banda en lo sonoro, con la melodía siempre de la mano de la contundencia como estandarte junto con las historias corsarias, siendo esta década testigo de algunos de los últimos grandes LP's de la banda. Canciones para una vida - Stratovarius - Destiny

 

DESTINY

A esas alturas de la carrera musical de los finlandeses Stratovarius, (finales de los 90), la banda tenía un estatus, un nivel de influencia y un tiron de ventas como pocas otras bandas en clave de europower tenían a nivel planetario, y es que la verdad es que venían de hacer las cosas muy bien y además de aprovechar el hecho de encabezar ese movimiento en una importante escena como la de su país siendo referentes allí y no solo. Siempre destacaron por saber aprovechar muy bien sus recursos y sin ser la mejor banda en cada aspecto por separado, la cohesión de cada elemento en la amalgama llamada Stratovarius les hizo llegar a casi cada rincon del planeta metálico. Para 1998 editaban ya su séptimo LP de estudio, "Destiny" que traía a cuestas la dificultad de ser el continuador de las obras "Episode" de 1996 y "Visions" del 97, que cumplió con creces al menos el apartado de ventas, como digo se trataba de ese momento de la banda en el que todo lo que oliese a Stratovarius era muy cotizado. Siguiendo con las obras y bandas clásicas dentro del power de los 90 no puede faltar el segundo de los LP's de los suecos Hammerfall, una de las bandas que revolucionó el concepto power de corte europeo y que en su segundo LP "Legacy of kings" de 1998 brillo especialmente. Once LP's de estudio conforman su discografía y desde 2019 no editan nada niuevo, lo que hace presagiar noticias en un periodo breve ya de tiempo en ese sentido viendo la tradición compositiva de su carrera, quizá para este próximo 2022. Canciones para una vida - Heimdall - Halvor & Lord Of The Sky

 

HALVOR  &  LORD  OF  THE  SKY

Siguiendo con las bandas clonicas de los primeros Rhapsody, sobre todo de su escena natal, encontramos a estos italianos, Heimdall, que cumple completamente dicho cliché, power épico, sinfónico y con arreglos orquestales, con partes narradas, etc, y cuya carrera comenzó en 1994 y que en 2007 pusieron fin a su primera etapa, para comenzar una segunda en 2011 supuestamente hasta la actualidad, aunque en este segundo periodo de actividad ha dado solo como fruto un único disco, en 2013, desde entonces silencio. En total su discografía la componen cuatro LP's de estudio, aunque como sucedía con otras bandas como los recientemente mencionados en el blog Thy Majestie, poniendose en la tesitura compositiva en la misma línea que los, sobre todo en esa época todopoderosos Rhapsody, tenían estas otras bandas las de perder, ya se sabe que las comparaciones son odiosas. De todas maneras estas bandas hicieron su carrera, y Heimdall nos dejo muy buenos momentos a lo largo de su discografía. Canciones para una vida - Sorcery - Penitence & Eternity

 

PENITENCE  &  ETERNITY

Una de las varias bandas de nombre "Sorcery" fueron los españoles que hoy dejo en el blog, una de esas bandas que se asomó a la corriente imperante en la parte final de la década de los noventa, el europower, que en España concretamente no despuntaba tanto como hubiese sido deseable en lo que a bandas que practicasen dicho subgénero se refiere. Sorcery, es quizá un buen ejemplo que ilustra esa idea, el subgénero Power parecía no cuajar en nuestras latitudes desde la perspectiva de los músicos, pues creo que la respuesta del público ante las bandas internacionales era igual o mejor que la de cualquier otra nación, y como digo, Sorcery puede resultar buen termómetro, puesto que su breve carrera que dejó solo este LP, "Eternity", de 1998, y que enseñaba un potencial grande, que con la dirección y apoyo apropiados hubiese podido desembocar en una carrera al nivel de la de muchos nombres internacionales. Si que es cierto que la cuetión productiva quizá hubiese necesitado otro enfoque pero "Eternity" es un digno disco debut del que se pueden rescatar buenos y varios momentos, como el tema que da nombre a la obra y del que dejo un enlace a youtube. Otra banda que quedó en el camino sin apenas comenzar a florecer.

Canciones para una vida - Blitzkrieg - The Legend Part 1 Crimson Dawn & Part 2 Nations Divided

 

THE  LEGEND  PART  2  NATIONS  DIVIDED

La escena más underground suele ser siempre el origen natural de las bandas y tras un tiempo más o menos largo en relación directa con el éxito cosechado suelen abandonar muchos de los elementos propios de ese momento tales como el tipo de producción musical o incluso el tipo de composición. Pero, hay bandas que ven su personalidad plasmada en ese tipo de momento y deciden perpetuarlo como parte de su identidad, a pesar de lo que les pueda perjudicar a la hora de promocionarse, y por lo tanto de hacer dinero, o quizás, sea más un caso de no ser capaces por motivos aparte de la calidad musical, de asomar la cabeza para triunfar a nivel internacional y mostrar un tesón igualmente digno de mención para alargar su carrera y su concepto en el tiempo.Uno de esos grupos que a pesar de su larga historia y de su cierto reconocimiento como banda de culto, que se encuentra muy a gusto con ese aire underground son los britanicos "Blitzkrieg", de los que ya he hablado en esta páginas, un grupo nacido al calor de la NWOBHM a comienzos de los ochenta, con varias etapas y que continua en la actualidad en activo con ya 10 LP's de estudio más tres EP's. Heavy metal de corte épico, de la vieja escuela y sin adorno alguno, del que hoy quiero dejar en el blog una de las canciones de su cuarto disco "The Mists Of Avalon", de 1998 uno de los más épicos del grupo, concretamente "The legend", canción de más de veinte minutos de la que dejo su segunda parte, "Nations Divided", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

WINGS  OF  STEEL

La segunda de las obras de estudio de los australianos "Pegazus" es uno de esos discos que resultan sorprendentes por lo inesperado de una escena como la australiana en un contexto compositivo como el power y más aún como el power de corte europeo más bien, pero es que estamos hablando de finales de los 90, que por una parte explica la predilección del subgénero por muchas bandas pero por otra confirma más aún la extrañeza al ubicar al grupo en su origen australiano, una escena poco pródiga al power sobre todo en aquel instante. sea como sea este es uno de esos discos que sorprende a los que desconozcan a la banda, una obra bastante completa de un grupo que hoy en día sigue en activo a pesar de no editar material nuevo de estudio desde 2011 ya componiendo su discografía un total de 5 LP's. Canciones para una vida - Seventh Avenue - Southgate

 

INTRODUCE  &  SOUTHGATE

Otra de las obras de los alemanes "Seventh Avenue", en uno de sus mejores momentos a nivel compositivo y de estabilidad del grupo, ya asentados como banda por completo y desarrollando ese sonido tan característico de esos años en el subgénero power dentro de la corriente europea. Estamos ante un grupo, como ya he dicho en el blog, para nada suficientemente reconocido, y es que si se pudiese definir el power metal de esa época y escuela esta banda cumpliría matemáticamente todos y cada uno de sus puntos. Este "Southgate" de 1998 es el tercer LP de la banda, y en el encontramos temazos como el que abre la obra y da nombre a la misma, toda una declaración de intenciones de la que hoy dejo un enlace a youtube.

Excelsis siempre ha sabido crear una atmósfera en sus albumes, muchos de ellos conceptuales, y parecen cuidar cada uno de los detalles para que el todo resulte adecuado a sus espectativas. Ya es evidente para todos que el reconocimiento general o las ventas no quieren decir gran cosa si a lo que nos referimos es a la fidelidad a uno mismo, al concepto que se quiere transmitir o si miramos a las raices mismas que te han hecho ser músico, y en eso "Excelsis" siempre han sido unos maestros. Estos suizos se sacaron de la manga en 1998 un segundo LP  memorable en su conjunto, con todas las características que les han hecho ser quienes son, el toque folk, el toque épico, el power o el aspero y en ocasiones oscuro hacen del sonido de la banda una amalgama que, además de sello propio y garantía de reconocibilidad, hace que te enganches a dicho concepto. Hoy quiero volver a esta obra, super recomendable, para destacar otro de sus temas, en este caso uno en clave de medio tiempo, épico, un tanto folk y con ese toque oscurillo, que te hace viajar instantaneamente con tu cabeza, se trata de "Son Of Agnes", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

THE  HANGING  TREE

 Un poco de música progresiva para hoy en el blog, encarnada en la banda inglesa "Arena". Hablamos incluso, de un grupo catalogado como rock progresivo, aunque se acerca al concepto metálico más que otra cosa, eso si con montones de "interludios" instrumentales, acústicos, piano, etc, todo ello para crear una atmósfera muy del estilo y aquí magistralmente desarrollada. Hablar de Arena es hacerlo de músicos de primera línea, con gran reputación como Clive Nolan, (Pendragon, shadowland, o su colaboración con Oliver Wakeman), y de Mick Pointer, (Marillion), entre otros. Si conoces su carrera comprenderás el componente progresivo sin más. Arena se forma en 1995 y desde entonces siguen en activo con ya nueve LP's de estudio, más 2 EP's y varios discos en vivo, así como alguna reedición aniversario y alguna edición acústica. Es una de esas banda que no mucha gente conoce y que sorprenderá a más de uno, particularmente para mí, sobre todo este "The Visitor" de 1998, cuarto LP y un disco que siempre he admirado. Canciones para una vida - Rhapsody - Where Dragons Fly

WHERE  DRAGONS  FLY

Ya ha pasado mucho tiempo desde los inicios de esta banda italiana que tan fuerte pegó a finales del siglo pasado y comienzos del actual, e igualmente, muchas cuestiones han ido cambiando en su periplo musical durante estos ya más de veinte años de historia, con sus idas y venidas, los pulsos internos entre algunos de sus miembros, salidas que parecian condenar al grupo y que luego se hicieron más numerosas, evoluciones compositivas hacia lugares más o menos acertados y al final, sin embargo, continuando en la brecha, con reminiscencias en este último formato del grupo hacia el material inicial, buscando de nuevo la vieja identidad que les llevo tan arriba. Esta banda, desde los inicios, por la época propicia, por la innovación de su sonido, por la influencia sobre tantas otras bandas, demostró desde sus comienzos que podía ser un buen filón de ventas y usó alguna de las fórmulas disponibles para tratar de exprimir "la gallina de los huevos de oro" todo lo posible, y una de las fórmulas clásicas aparece a través de los singles que incluyen material no incluido en el LP original. Y en esas estamos hoy, de su segundo LP de estudio, "Symphony of enchanted lands", de 1998, dejaron fuera este temazo como gancho para sacar ese "extra" de los fans, por aquellos años alucinando con el sonido de la banda. Canciones para una vida - Shadow Gallery - Ghost Of A Chance

GHOST  OF  A  CHANCE

Siempre que uno esgrime el término "Progresive Metal" automaticamente acude a su cabeza la banda "Dream Theater" quienes, por méritos propios viven desde hace mucho en la cima del subgénero, sin embargo no son, ni mucho menos, los únicos en desarrollar ese tipo de sonido con maestría. Buen ejemplo de ello son sus compatriotas "Shadow Gallery", otra banda muy en la onda de lo propuesto por "Dream Theater" y que no desmerece en absoluto en calidad tanto compositiva como de producción. Es algo aún más evidente si me refiero, como en esta ocasión, a alguno de sus mejores momentos en el conjunto de su discografía, como es el caso de este "Tyranny" de 1998. Shadow Gallery se forma en 1985 y siguen en activo aunque hace ya más de una década que no editan material de estudio. Este citado "Tyranny" de 1998 es su tercera obra de estudio y siempre la he considerado como un gran disco en su conjunto. Hoy quiero dejar del mismo una de sus canciones, concretamente este precioso tema "Ghost of a chance" del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

KNIGHTS  OF  THE CROSS

 Como tantas veces suele hacerse, ante la espera del momento concreto de la salida del material nuevo de una banda que nos gusta mucho, suele recurrirse a recuperar material anterior del grupo para quitarse el "mono" del sonido de dicha banda, y en esas estamos. La próxima salida de la nueva obra de los alemanes "Grave Digger" es una excelente excusa para recuperar otra de sus pasadas obras, en esta ocasión la segunda de las obras pertenecientes a la genial trilogía que supusieron los discos "Tunes of war", "Knights of the cross" y "Excalibur". Sin duda estamos ante una de las mejores épocas compositivas de la banda, y en esta segunda obra de la citada trilogía, "Knights Of The Cross" de 1998, encontramos suficientes argumentos para confirmar lo dicho, valga como ejemplo la canción que da nombre a la obra, de la que dejo hoy un enlace a youtube, Grave Digger, un valor seguro.

Canciones para una vida - Excelsis - Dragonslayer

DRAGONSLAYER

Segunda obra de los suizos Excelsis, una banda de la que ya he hablado en el blog y a la que hoy vuelvo en la obra que me hizo descubrirles hace ya muchos años, "Kurt of Koppigen" de 1998. Para la ocasión la banda dio un paso más adelante respecto a su buen debut "Anduin the river", un disco de 1997 en el que ya demostraron un enorme potencial y en cierto modo ir abriendo un camino en la época hacia el tan extendido actual sonido folk que ellos decantaron hacia una power de vocación aspera, un tanto en la onda vocal de Grave Digger pero con muchos más elementos folk. Desde luego desde sus inicios como banda Excelsis demostró una gran personalidad que hizo de su estilo algo muy reconocible y posiblemente hasta cierto punto influjo para otras bandas a pesar de no llegar nunca a haber sido muy conocidos internacionalmente. De cualquier forma es altamente recomendable su discografía así como esta obra en concreto a la que hoy quiero hacer referencia,"Kurt of Koppigen", y a una de las canciones que más me gustan de dicha obra, "Dragonslayer", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Stratovarius - S.O.S.

S.O.S.

Poca presentación necesita esta banda finlandesa, una de las primeras impulsoras del sonido finlandés power a nivel internacional y que ayudaría a esa mega explosión de grupos de ese pequeño país europeo que es sin embargo un gigante a nivel sonoro. Hoy quiero traer un tema del disco "Destiny", una obra en la que la banda se encontraba en uno de sus momentos más exitosos, tras ya en ese momento una carrera llena de éxitos, con obras como "Episode" o "Visions" llegaba este "Destiny" de 1998, un disco en el que la banda tenía la misión de mantener las expectativas creadas anteriormente siendo como digo un referente en la escena power internacional. Tras una serie de giras a nivel mundial editan este disco con muy buena acogida entre publico y medios especializados, que seria otro gran éxito de ventas y terminaría por hacer de Stratovarius un grupo indispensable en cualquier evento metálico que se preciase. Es un disco además en el que la banda muestra signos evolutivos en su sonido, más hacia un estilo un pelo más sinfónico, algo que explotarían más adelante quizá en exceso. De esta obra se puede indudablemente destacar un montón de temas lo que sin duda habla siempre de una obra como completa, y este es un caso más, un disco de esos que hay que tener, sobre todo si lo tuyo es el power de corte europeo. Hoy quiero destacar el single "S.O.S.", tema absolutamente "made in stratovarius", uno de sus singles de manual y que no podía faltar en un repaso de las canciones para una vida, un tema del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Rhapsody - Wisdom Of The Kings

WISDOM  OF  THE  KINGS

Nuevamente me refiero en el blog a esta banda italiana, Rhapsody, que posteriormente añadió la "coletilla" "of fire" por motivos de derechos, algo que ya he explicado en anteriores entradas de este grupo, una banda tan admirada por unos como criticada por otros, pero que al fin ha logrado, sin duda de ninguna clase, hacerse un nombre y un sonido propios, algo que muchas otras bandas jamás han logrado. Evidentemente el tipo de música que nos llene decidirá en que concepto tenemos a Rhapsody, pero para ser justos, desde una perspectiva objetiva, nos encontramos ante una banda que ha tenido aciertos y otros no tanto a lo largo de sus ya 22 años de existencia. Quizá ese giro progresivamente cada vez más sinfónico ha dejado en ciertas ocasiones de lado la vertiente más metálica, lo que ha creado esa imagen de banda "especial" y que muchos no han dudado de tildar de "amariconada", algo que, por otra parte me parece realmente injusto, pues a lo largo y ancho de su discografía encontramos tal multitud de matices que ha de satisfacer casi todas las demandas, incluida la contundencia en muchos momentos, eso si, siempre con un baño de arreglos que yo también reconozco excesivo muchas veces. Si a esto le añadimos el progresivo alargamiento (en duración) de los temas evidentemente la escucha de sus obras ha ido poco a poco requiriendo de una necesidad de atención que no todo el mundo está dispuesto a darle. Hoy quiero pues echar la vista atrás a sus inicios, época musical de la banda donde el equilibrio entre los arreglos, la contundencia y lo metálico estaba mucho más claro. En concreto me refiero hoy a su segundo disco, "symphony of enchanted lands", de 1998, un disco más sinfónico ya que su magnifico (para mi) debut "Legendary tales", pero que aún, como digo, mantenía ese equilibrio que hizo despertar tantas miradas hacia su propuesta y que su sonido fuera tan imitado en adelante, con mayor o menor acierto. En concreto hoy quiero dejar una de las canciones que más me gustan de ese disco, "Wisdom of the kings", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Drakkar - Wings Of Fire

WINGS  OF  FIRE

  
Drakkar es una banda italiana de power metal que lleva una larga trayectoria ya a sus espaldas y que, a pesar de no haber copado nunca los puestos más altos de popularidad ni a nivel internacional como tampoco de su Italia natal, si que han sido a mi entender siempre una interesante banda con muchas cosas que ofrecer. Nacidos en la época adecuada para el sonido que practicaban, se les podría meter en esa explosión de bandas italianas que surgieron a finales del siglo pasado, muchas de ellas alimentadas con el rotundo éxito que Rhapsody alcanzó, con temáticas muy fantástico-épicas y en general muchas de ellas con un buen hacer que les proporcionó largas carreras en muchos casos, algunas de ellas que continúan en nuestros días. Otras bandas, sin embargo, no gozaron del favor del gran público, lo que como en tantas otras ocasiones no era sinónimo de falta de calidad musical. entre ellas podríamos encontrar a Drakkar. Se forman en 1995 y comienzan a editar material en 1998 con su "Quest for glory", un disco del que hoy quiero dejar una canción en el blog. Se trata de una obra más que interesante, más aún tratándose de su debut que mostraba ya un potencial importante para la banda aunque he de decir que el punto más débil que encuentro en los Drakkar de esa época estaba en el puesto de vocalista, que sin ser tampoco algo desastroso ni mucho menos si que es algo que subsanaron en las obras siguientes con la incorporación de Davide Dell' Orto que permanece aún hoy en día en tal puesto y desde el año 2000. El tema escogido para hoy es "Wings of fire", con una vocación de medio tiempo épico, la típica canción de despedida de un "amigo-rey-líder" en batalla o algo similar, un tema del que dejo un enlace a youtube.
