RAINBOW  THEME /  FROZEN  RAINBOW

Para el nacimiento de esta inmortal banda británica, Saxon, allá por 1978, gran parte de sus miembros habían formado parte juntos de otros proyectos, o más bien habían tocado juntos bajo otros nombres desde comienzos de esa década de los 70, pero el cambio de nombre, unido a la NWOBHM, les hizo nacer ya como Saxon con un formato absolutamente heavy metal clásico. Su debut así lo atestigua, "Saxon", 1979, una obra que muestra claramente que el concepto básico de la banda ha permanecido incorruptible a lo largo de todas estas décadas. Hoy quiero dejar en el blog uno de los temas que formaron parte de esos inicios, "Rainbow Theme / Frozen Rainbow", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube, Saxon, una de las piezas clave del heavy metal, mal que les pese a algunos.

747 (STRANGERS  IN THE  NIGHT)

Ya desde el inicio, esta gran banda británica demostraba a todo aquel que le quisiera escuchar que tenían pegada. gancho e ilusión para desarrollar una larga carrera, pero desde luego se han convertido en una de las más prolíficas bandas en lo que a discos editados se refiere, y contando camino ya de la quinta década en activo. 1980 fue el año en que la banda lanzó su segundo y tercer albumes de estudio, el segundo "Wheels of steel" es hoy mi foco de atención para dejar en el blog otro de sus temas clásicos, "747 (strangers in the night)", del que dejo hoy un enlace a youtube.

HELL , FIRE  AND  DAMNATION

Incombustibles, una de las bandas que deberían ser reconocidad por todos como uno de los pilares del heavy metal, que, sin descanso de épocas, atravesando momentos compositivos diferentes pero siempre con su propia identidad, han y siguen completando una carrera con ya 27 LP's de estudio (contando este "Hell Fire and damnation" cuya salida oficial se espera para el 19 de enero del inminente 2024), solo por esas cifras merecen el respeto y más si a los números les acompaña la caidad, y la honestidad de seguir su propia senda. En estos día la banda nos deja el primer adelanto de la nueva obra, la canción que la da nombre y de la que dejo un enlace a youtube de su clip oficial, "Saxon", ni más ni menos.

THE  PILGRIMAGE

Esta claro que las bandas eternas, las míticas y longevas, las que se hicieron mito al mismo tiempo que el propio sonido que cultivaban han llegado tan lejos, a ese número de obras gracias a la calidad, y hay varias de ellas que han escogido esta década de los 20 para reactivarse desde el punto de vista compositivo, una de ellas es "Saxon" quien ha publicado su vigesimo quinto LP de estudio en este 2022, una obra con un claro regusto clásico, muy a lo Saxon de toda la vida, una obra que abre la posibilidad a la banda de seguir dando guerra mientras les queden fuerzas, y los metalhead de siempre, sus incondicionales seguirán acudiendo a esas citas de manera inquebrantable. "Carpe diem" resulta ser poco novedoso, pero al final lo que uno necesita de un disco de Saxon es que suene a Saxon, y eso desde luego queda bien cubierto una vez más. Hoy dejo en el blog otra de las canciones de la obra, "Pilgrimage" con ese aire de medio tiempo pesado, con ese aura clásica, una canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube de su clip oficial.

Canciones para una vida - Saxon - Carpe Diem (Seize The Day)

 

CARPE  DIEM  (SEIZE  THE  DAY)

 Ya a la vista está la vigésimo tercera obra de estudio de los incombustibles británicos "Saxon" una de las bandas legendarias, una de esas que son historia viva, que forman parte del nacimiento mismo del heavy metal, una banda que ha mantenido su propuesta desde los inicios y que ha sabido sobrevivir contra viento y marea durante más de cuatro décadas en activo. Si bien pueden tener un cartel a priori de menor "cahé" que otros grupos coetáneos, al final su historia es suficiente aval, una historia llena de momentos importantes de la que este "Carpe Diem" que verá la luz de forma oficial en febrero de 2022 es solo un capítulo más. A juzgar por el tema de presentación que es el que da nombre a la obra, "Carpe Diem (seize the day)", siguen, como no podía ser de otra manera, sonando a sí mismos, que mejor manera de comprobarlo que escucharlo, tema del que dejo un enlace a youtube de su clip oficial.

BLOODLETTER

Otra de las canciones destacables del décimo tercer LP de estudio de los británicos "Saxon" "Unleash the beast" de 1997 puede ser "Bloodletter". Hablamos de una época de la banda en la que venían intentando recuperar su identidad tras los experimentos pasados más afines al hard n' heavy de principios de la década de los 90 en su intento de conquistar una escena estadounidense que jamás llegaron a conquistar. Es evidente que el ambiente compositivo más apropiado para esta banda es ese heavy metal que ayudaron a impulsar con el inicio mismo de la NWOBHM, y desde luego son una de las leyendas vivas de esto del heavy metal. Como decía al inicio otra de las canciones destacadas de este "Unleash the beast" puede ser "Bloodletter", y de ella quiero dejar en el blog hoy un enlace a youtube.

TERMINAL  VELOCITY

La década de los 90 ha sido como pocas una época de cambios, de evoluciones sonoras y de practicamente extinción de otros tipos de sonidos como el heavy metal clásico por ejemplo, o el hard rock  - hair metal, o del Thrash más puro. Es evidente que la fusión de subgéneros termina por crear otros nuevos, y así terminarían por explotar a finales de la citada década el power y el death por ejemplo. Sin embargo, algunos grupos si que hicieron un esfuerzo por mantener la fórmula inicial que les encumbrase, en esa fórmula del heavy de la old school, como por ejemplo Running Wild o Saxon. Hoy quiero dejar en el blog una de las canciones de uno de los discos de la citada década de los 90, concretamente el décimo tercer disco de estudio de la banda, "Unleash the beast", de 1997, en la que el grupo seguía a lo suyo, cultivando su sonido tan característico, un disco del que hoy dejo la canción "Terminal Velocity", de la que dejo un enlace a Youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Saxon - Devil Rides Out

DEVIL  RIDES  OUT

Como siempre digo con este tipo de obras, tratandose de los grandes de verdad, de uno de los padres de esto del heavy metal en la época apropiada, siempre es un buen momento para escuchar y rescatar discos de este calibre, y muchas son las opciones a escoger entre un puñado de canciones si estas están compuestas con la calidad que, las premisas anteriores aseguran. Por eso hoy retorno una vez más a los británicos Saxon y a su "Innocence is no excuse" de 1985 para dejar el tema "Devil Rides Out" , otra de las canciones destacables de este disco, que, sin ser el mejor de la banda si que deja claro que estamos ante una de las bandas clásicas que se ha ganado una reputación por méritos propios. Canciones para una vida - Saxon - Sons Of Odin

SONS  OF  ODIN

Nuevo repaso a la última obra de estudio de los eternos "Saxon", una de las bandas más sinceras de la vieja guardia del metal internacional que en su décimo tercer disco de estudio demuestran una vez más que a estas alturas de la película no van a ofrecer otra cosa que sabor 100% Saxon. Así pues, las virtudes esperadas y esperables de una obra de semejante banda están completamente presentes en este su nuevo retoño, dejando muchos destellos de calidad como no podía ser de otra manera. Es evidente que quien no sea seguidor y a quien no le haya gustado la carrera de los ingleses a lo largo de las pasadas cuatro décadas no encontrará disfrute en este nuevo disco, e igualmente al contrario, ya que la fidelidad del sonido Saxon en este disco es alta.Como muestra dejo hoy otra de las canciones de la obra, "Sons Of Odin", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Saxon - Requiem (We Will Remember)

REQUIEM  (WE  WILL  REMEMBER)

 De nuevo este clásico en el blog, un clásico como banda y como LP, del que el grupo ha sacado un puñado de temas que por derecho propio debería ir a cualquier recopilatorio de Saxon, y que habitualmente son elegidos en los shows en directo, además de los correspondientes a cada gira de cada obra nueva que editan, y es que este grupo lleva ya sacando discos más de cuarenta años, ahí es nada. 23 son los LP's grabados por la banda a fecha de esta reseña, y este "Solid ball of rock" de 1990 hace el décimo. Se trata de un disco criticado por algunos, más en mi opinión por el giro compositivo que las dos anteriores obras de la banda habían tomado, siguiendo la imperante corriente más hard, que el mercado americano imponía a la escena internacional a finales de los 80, y aunque en esta obra "solid ball of rock" retomaba la senda más original de Saxon, y en mi opinión con gran acierto, muchos no quisieron perdonar el "desliz" anterior en el intento de conquista del esquivo, para la banda, mercado americano. Sea como sea, hoy quiero dejar otro de los temas importantes de este "Solid ball of rock" de 1990, en concreto "Requiem (we will remember)" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Saxon - Nosferatu (The Vampires Waltz)

NOSFERATU  (THE  VAMPIRES  WALTZ)

Se dice pronto, pero el vigesimo tercer larga duración de Saxon ya está aquí, "Thunderbolt", salido a la venta este pasado 2 de febrero. Realmente poco más hay que decir, un grupo como este se ha ganado su estatus aunque solo sea por la persistencia y constancia a lo largo de cuatro décadas. Influjo para innumerables bandas y generaciones de músicos siempre fueron considerados como los hermanos menos talentosos de la familia de clásicos británicos que alimentaron el movimiento de la NWOBHM, sin embrago, o quizás por eso mismo han sido de los más constantes, estables y prolíficos, y eso mismo habla también de los que es esta obra nueva. Sin duda no será el disco del año, como casi nunca en la carrera de Saxon, atraerá críticas no demasiado buenas perpetuando su leyenda de "hermano pobre" de los grandes, pero, en definitiva ellos seguirán a lo suyo. Este "Thunderbolt" pues es un capitulo más en la historia de la banda, con sus cosas buenas y malas, Saxon 100% con sus luces y sombras, ni el mejor ni el peor de sus discos pero con detalles destacables seguro, aunque nada más sea porque se conocen de memoria a ellos mismos y a este negocio del heavy metal. Canciones para una vida - Saxon - Crusader

CRUSADER

"Crusader" de 1984, sexto LP de la banda Saxon que aparece en uno de esos años mágicos para el metal europeo, y mundial, 1984, con los Maiden editando "Powerslave", Judas editando "Defenders of the faith", Accept editando "Balls to the wall"... etc... y Saxon que ataca con este "Crusader". El disco sin duda es antológico, basta con echar un vistazo a la lista de temas y darse cuenta que muchas de ellas son de necesaria interpretación en cualquier concierto de los "Sajones" ante sus fieles. Ya desde que vemos su portada nos damos cuenta de que estos chicos venían a presentar batalla, y viendo el estado de sus enemigos de prisioneros nada de nada, y es que el disco no te da tregua, enganchando tema tras tema en una perfecta conexión de aciertos compositivos. Casi puedes escoger al azar y acertarás con el tema, y hoy quiero dejar en el blog un enlace del tema que da título al disco, "Crusader", uno de los cenits de la carrera de la banda, un tema también inmortal, también destinado a perdurar, igualmente lleno de matices y de buen hacer de una banda ya mucho más que asentada en el momento de la salida de la obra, una canción fundamental de la que dejo hoy un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Saxon - Queen Of Hearts

QUEEN  OF  HEARTS

Última obra de los británicos Saxon hasta la fecha de esta reseña, salida a finales de 2015. Poca presentación para esta banda de culto que ya he mencionado en varias ocasiones en el blog, uno de los motores de la NWOBHM desde sus comienzos y una banda que nunca me cansaré de repetir que a pesar de sus ventas, de su cartel etc. siempre ha sido colocada injustamente un peldaño por debajo de los Maiden, Judas y compañía y que solo el tiempo terminará de colocar lo alto que merecen, a pesar como digo de su ya reconocimiento. Este trabajo, el 21 en su carrera, es un paso más, un buen ejemplo de lo que les ha hecho mantenerse a lo largo de 4 décadas en lo alto de la escena internacional, con su heavy metal clásico por estandarte, a veces más adaptado a los tiempos que corren, a veces más acorde a su escuela clásica, lo que está claro es que siempre hay algo que rascar en sus obras, unas más "redondas", otras menos, pero siempre la calidad ondea a su alrededor demostrando que las cosas no son nunca por casualidad. En esta ocasión nos encontramos ante un trabajo en el que podríamos diferenciar una primera parte más fina, con un sonido más enganchón en plan Saxon, y una segunda parte algo más descafeinada, aunque siempre dicho sea con el respeto que me merecen estos tíos. Varios temas a destacar, "battering ram", "The Devil's Footprint", " Destroyer" o este "Queen of Hearts" del que hoy quiero dejar un enlace a youtube, demuestran una vez más que cada nueva obra de estos músicos es una buena escusa para volver a meter la nariz en su discografía. Como digo, dejo un enlace a youtube de su "Queen of hearts", una canción con una gran atmósfera, en un plan algo más relajado pero con el sello de calidad de Saxon.

Canciones para una vida - Saxon - Run For Your Lives

RUN FOR YOUR LIVES

En mi anterior entrada sobre Saxon me referí al álbum más criticado de la banda, su "Destiny" de 1988, con su flirteo con un sonido fuera de su "rango natural" seducidos por las llamadas yankees en forma de promesa de ventas... pues bien, hoy nos ponemos en el lado opuesto al traer al blog la que para muchos es la última gran obra de Saxon, su "Crusader" de 1984, sexto LP de la banda que aparece en uno de esos años mágicos para el metal europeo, 1984, con los Maiden editando "Powerslave", Judas editando "Defenders of the faith", Accept editando "Balls to the wall"... etc... y Saxon que ataca con este "Crusader". El disco sin duda es antológico, basta con echar un vistazo a la lista de temas y darse cuenta que muchas de ellas son de necesaria interpretación en cualquier concierto de los "Sajones" ante sus fieles. Ya desde que vemos su portada nos damos cuenta de que estos chicos venían a presentar batalla, y viendo el estado de sus enemigos de prisioneros nada de nada, y es que el disco no te da tregua, enganchando tema tras tema en una perfecta conexión de aciertos compositivos. Casi puedes escoger al azar y acertarás con el tema, pero hoy quiero dejar en el blog la canción "Run for your lives" uno de los que más me gustan además del homónimo al título del disco "Crusader", que traeré al blog en otra ocasión. Volviendo al tema de hoy, coreable desde la primera escucha, mítico y directamente creado para ser cantado en vivo, un temazo del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Saxon - For Whom The Bell Tolls

FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS

Ya hemos hablado en el blog de Saxon, de su glorioso pasado y reciclado presente y existente aún futuro, pero también de sus momentos más flojos, evidentemente me refiero a la época de flirteo con el sonido más hard americano ochentero, en esa especie de obsesión que la banda tuvo con la conquista del mercado estadounidense, y que jamás llegó a suceder del todo, época que tiene su máxima expresión en esta obra que hoy traigo al blog, su noveno disco de estudio, "Destiny", de 1988. Vaya por delante que nada tengo contra el sonido hard americano, es más bien contra relacionar a bandas como Saxon con él, sobre todo cuando es evidentemente antinatural en este grupazo y además fruto de una obsesión innecesaria como fue la de la conquista a toda costa de un mercado que no terminaba de adorarles como si que lo hacía el europeo, a costa incluso de su identidad musical, ese es el error que cuesta más perdonar a una banda de esta categoría, cuando su estilo natural es el que adoras. Aún así, quiero traer esta obra al blog porque no dejan de ser Saxon, y seguro que siempre algo se puede rescatar de cualquier obra que se dignen a grabar, y este caso no es una excepción, como se puede comprobar en el tema que dejo en el blog de este "Destiny", y me refiero a su tema "For whom the bell tolls", una canción que sigue más los senderos esperados de la banda, una de las más musculosas de un disco "anémico" en términos "Saxonianos". Al menos esta obra fue el peor disco de los británicos, desde aquí se dedicaron más a lo natural en ellos, quien sabe, quizá por no llegar a los yankees del todo ni con este disco "made in USA".  Dejo en el blog un enlace a youtube de este buen tema "For whom the bell tolls".

STRONG ARM OF THE LAW

A pesar de no haber llegado a la importancia mediática de bandas británicas  posteriores o coetáneas a ellos como Iron Maiden o Judas Priest, la influencia que Saxon a dejado en muchos grupos posteriores ha sido grande, y sus cifras de venta así lo atestiguan ya que hasta 2013 se estima que han vendido más de 13 millones de discos a nivel mundial. Ya hemos hablado de su historia en anteriores entradas, son una banda que lleva en activo bajo el nombre de Saxon desde 1978 y que cuentan con nada menos que 20 discos de estudio a sus espaldas. A mediados de los 80 comienzan a flirtear con un sonido mas Glam, hard rock, para intentar el asalto al mercado estadounidense que siempre se les había resistido. En los noventa vuelven a su sonido más heavy, pero en general siempre ha sido un grupo con un sonido muy concreto aunque sin miedo a reinventarse, y la prueba puede estar en los últimos 3 o 4 discos en que han adoptado un sonido mucho más power metal e incluso con ciertos toques sinfónicos. Tras su flirteo con el sonido más americano en su intento de abrirse aquel mercado, cosa que jamás llegaron a hacer del todo, el disco "Solid ball of rock", de 1990, su ya 10ª obra de estudio, si bien era un paso para volver a sus raíces en lo que a sonido se refiere, aun destilaba ese guiño americano que ultimamente habían afrontado, muy en la onda del sonido que mandaba en esa época por otra parte.  Vamos hoy a volver la mirada de nuevo a los inicios de su carrera para hablar de su tercera obra de estudio, "Strong arm of the law", la segunda que editarían dentro de ese año 1980, algo poco habitual. Con el primer puñetazo metálico de ese año "Wheels of steel" ya habían avisado pero este fue el gancho demoledor que les hizo que su nombre sonase ya con fuerza en la escena sobre todo europea. Temas emblemáticos de la banda pertenecen a este álbum como "Heavy Metal Thunder", "20,000 Ft" o "Strong Arm Of The Law" tema homónimo al título del disco que quiero hoy dejar en el blog, un tema recurrente y coreado en sus directos, todo un clásico del que dejo hoy un enlace a youtube de su clip oficial.

Esto les lleva en ese 1983 a realizar el "Power and Glory Tour", que les lleva por medio mundo, y les sitúa en uno de los puntos más altos de su carrera hasta ese momento en cuanto a popularidad, vendiendo por ejemplo, solo en Los Angeles más de 15.000 copias el fin de semana de la salida de su "Power and the glory". En definitiva, este álbum puso las bases para el posiblemente mayor punto de éxito del grupo que vendría al año siguiente, con la firma del grupo por EMI y la edición de su "Crusader", que vendió más de 2 millones de copias. Volviendo al disco que nos ocupa hoy, "Power and the glory", quiero dejar en el blog una de sus canciones más prototípicas, el tema "The eagle has landed", del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Volviendo a la época media de su historia, hoy voy a irme al año 1995 para hablar de su undécimo album de estudio, "Dogs of War", disco sacado en esa época de transición del sonido metálico que supuso la mitad de la década de los 90 en la que los grupos de sonido clásico se vieron "invadidos" por nuevas tendencias teniendo que escoger entre una evolución o permanecer fieles a su estilo. Pues bien, de este disco, el último con el guitarrista Graham Oliver en la banda, quiero hoy dejar en el blog un tema, "The great white buffalo", canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

El disco posterior es el "Forever Free", de 1992, del que hoy quiero dejar en el blog una canción, una confirmación de lo que decíamos de su "Solid ball of rock", digno sucesor de este, el álbum fue producido por el propio Biff Byford y contiene canciones espectaculares como el tema homónimo al título del disco, "Forever Free", del que dejo hoy un enlace a youtube.

PRINCESS OF THE NIGHT

A pesar de no haber llegado a la importancia mediática de bandas británicas  posteriores o coetáneas a ellos como Iron Maiden o Judas Priest, la influencia que Saxon a dejado en muchos grupos posteriores ha sido grande, y sus cifras de venta así lo atestiguan ya que hasta 2013 se estima que han vendido más de 13 millones de discos a nivel mundial. Ya hemos hablado de su historia en anteriores entradas,  son una banda que lleva en activo bajo el nombre de Saxon desde 1978 y que cuentan con nada menos que 20 discos de estudio a sus espaldas. El disco de hoy es de su época inicial, exactamente su cuarta obra de estudio, "Denim and leather", de 1981, un disco que le llega a la banda en plena explosión exitosa en su país natal Inglaterra. Tras aparecer en el primer "monsters of rock", de 1980, el nombre de la banda y su legión de seguidores iban en aumento. Con grandes éxitos como la homónima "Denim and leather", "Princess of the night", "Never surrender" o "The band played on", este disco llegó a ser un éxito de ventas alcanzando el número 20 en las listas inglesas y también la certificación de disco de oro en las Islas Británicas, considerándosele como una de las cabezas del movimiento de la NWOBHM en esos momentos.
