Canciones para una vida - Heed - I Am Alive

I AM ALIVE

Como ya me referí cuando hablé de Lost Horizon, Heed es un proyecto del cantante  Daniel Heiman y del guitarrista Fredrik Olsson procedentes de la separación de la genial banda sueca. Este proyecto fue tomando forma en 2004 y sacarón este su único disco en 2005. Es un buen disco aunque no llegue al nivel extraordinario de las dos obras con Lost horizon, sin embargo tiene un cierto toque a dicha banda. Algo debe tener este Daniel Heiman que no le duran los grupos, aunque es inegable que su capacidad vocal es asombrosa. Quiero destacar de este The Call la canción I Am Alive, un buen tema power que enseguida te llega. Es para destacar también la preciosa balada nothing, y en general el disco que es fácil de oir aunque sin el filo en todos los temas de la irrepetible banda Lost Horizon. Dejo un enlace en youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Evertale - Of dragons And Elves

OF DRAGONS AND ELVES

 Uno de estos nuevos valores que van surgiendo ultimamente, se trata de los alemanes Evertale, un grupo que tan solo cuenta con este disco de estudio de 2013 y un EP anterior de 2008. Evertale sin embargo llevan una trayectoria como músicos más amplia pues antes de adoptar su denominación actual funcionaban bajo el nombre de Blackened con el que sacaron en 2003 un disco llamado a Jester's tale. Evertale retoma las raíces del power metal clásico para dar forma a un disco de muy buena factura y que tiene temas de fácil escucha y aunque es evidente que no han inventado nada nuevo si que prometen un futuro más importante si siguen por este camino. Seguro que en el disco encontrareis buenas canciones, a mi me llaman varias la atención y he querido traer al blog el tema homónimo al disco Of dragons and elves, un tema medio tiempo, que empieza un poquito a lo Blind Guardian si se quiere pero que enseguida deja una huella personal que es buen ejemplo del potencial de estos chicos. Canciones para una vida - Equilibrium - Freiflug

FREIFLUG

Quiero traer hoy al blog a una muy buena banda de Alemania dentro del Viking Metal, son Equilibrium, un enorme grupo que deberia tener mayor repercusión y reconocimiento atendiendo al gran talento musical que atesoran. Su música es un contundente combo de viking metal aderezado de arreglos sinfónicos y con un toque muy personal. Quizás su único punto débil sea que sus letras están cantadas en alemán, lo que puede que limite su repercusión internacional. La banda es perfecta para mi, su ejecución es impecable con una cuidada composición y epica a raudales. La banda se forma en 2001 y su primera demo ve la luz en 2003, sacando su primer disco de estudio en 2005, el impresionante y probablemente su mejor disco Turis Fratyr, aunque este último Erdentempel de este 2014 esta muy cerca en calidad. Tienen 4 discos de estudio y un EP y en ellos encontrareis muy buenas composiciones influidas por los cuentos germánicos y la mitología escandinava, con inclusión de melodías muy epicas y temas instrumentales hiper épicos. Quiero acercaros el tema Freiflug de como os digo su última obra Erdentempel de este año 2014, un tema espectacular, que desde el comienzo deja una buena idea de lo que es la música de esta gran banda, con ese coro épico que resonará en tu cabeza una y otra vez. Un grupo al que prestar atención y que merece la pena escuchar, a pesar de su alemán en las letras. Dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Stormwitch - Tigers Of The Sea

TIGERS OF THE SEA

Un clásico para hoy, los alemanes Stormwitch, uno de esos grupos fundamentales para entender el power metal de hoy en día. Menos conocidos en general de lo que merecen han sido una gran influencia musical para muchas de las bandas más conocidas hoy en día y cuyo máximo exponente lo encontramos en Hammerfall con su famosa versión de Ravenlord, canción de Stormwitch perteneciente al disco Stronger Than Heaven de 1986. Stormwitch se forma en 1979 bajo el nombre de Lemon Sylvan con el que funcionaron hasta 1981 en que se cambian a Stormwitch. Con la nueva denominación comienzan a sacar obras de estudio en 1984 hasta crear 9 discos en total hasta 2004. En 1994 la banda se separa para retomarlo en 2002 sacando dos discos y cesando su actividad aunque teoricamente siguen en activo. Su power metal es una gran influencia para lo que posteriormente se hizo y si nunca los has escuchado te sorprenderá lo vigente de sus conceptos musicales, si vamos más allá de la diferente producción que presentaban los discos en los 80 y hoy en día. He querido traer al blog este tema Tigers of the sea, uno de los que más me gustan de la banda de su disco The Beauty and the Beast de 1987, su cuarta obra de estudio, con Stormwitch en plena forma, un buen disco en conjunto que recomiendo escuchar, tanto por la calidad en si misma que tiene como por su componente historico-influyente ya que probablemente podría considerarse a esta banda como uno de los padres del power metal. Canciones para una vida - Fogalord - The March Of The Grey Army

THE MARCH OF THE GREY ARMY

Hoy quiero hacer referencia a una buena banda italiana que es absolutamente desconocida y que merece la pena conocer. Se trata de Fogalord, un cuarteto de músicos que realizan un power symphonic metal con unas melodías épicas muy bien logradas. Creada por Daniele Bisi (Dany All) teclista de la banda Synthfonia Suprema en 2007, que deja claro que es el alma mater de la banda pues la melodía y ambientación del disco se basa en su sintetizador. El viaje comienza desde la intro con unos coros muy épicos, que se repiten a lo largo de las composiciones que forman este disco A legend to believe in, de 2012 su única obra de estudio hasta el momento, lo cual no quiere decir que debamos tomarnosla a la ligera, todo lo contrario, el disco es bueno en su conjunto, en el encontrareis muy buenos temas y se puede decir que es un  híbrido entre bandas como sus compatriotas Rhapsody y Domine, de los que hablaremos en este blog. He querido traer la canción The march of the grey army, que a mi me ganó desde la primera escucha, un tema super épico con ese ritmo y su melodía de teclado y guitarra. Atentos también a temas como  The Scream of the thunder, y en general al disco entero. En fin, una de esas sorpresas que uno se encuentra por ahí de vez en cuando y que espero que cuaje como banda porque promete dar muy buenos momentos musicales. Dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Falconer - Mindtraveller

MINDTRAVELLER

Los suecos Falconer son una banda que se formó tras la separación del grupo Mithotyn que hacía viking metal y que estuvo en activo entre el 93 y el 99. A partir de ese año, y con el cese de actividad de dicha banda, el guitarrista y teclista Stefan Weinerhall decide continuar haciendo música con influencia folk pero dejando a un lado la voz gutural y centrándose solo en voces limpias creando Falconer. En 2000 sacan su primera demo y en 2001 sale a la venta este primer disco con el título de Falconer como el de la banda. En él encontramos una buena colección de canciones con esa influencia de viking folk pero con un corte más power, mucho más sencillo de escuchar que su anterior grupo Mithotyn. Como Falconer este grupo ha sacado ya 8 obras que siguen una misma línea musical y entre su discografía encontramos muy buenos discos. En ocasiones hay temas cantados en sueco y sus raíces folk están siempre presentes en su música. El primero de sus discos, al que hago referencia en esta reseña es uno de los que a mi más me gustan y pueden extraerse muy buenos temas de él, queriendo destacar por encima de los demás a este espectacular Mindtraveller, un tema con una melodía de guitarra que se mete en tu cabeza desde un principio y que a mi me gusta mucho. Es un buen grupo Falconer al que tienes que acercarte si aún no lo conoces pues te dará muy buenos momentos musicales. Dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Luca Turilli - The Ancient Forest Of Elves

THE ANCIENT FOREST OF ELVES

Hoy en el blog quiero dejaros el primer trabajo en solitario del guitarrista y uno de los compositores de Rhapsody. El italiano Luca Turilli es uno de esos músicos con los que en muchos casos no se que pensar de antemano, es decir, cada vez que sé que va a sacar un disco de estudio o un proyecto nuevo me echo a temblar, en el sentido de que parece que nunca está satisfecho con su propio estilo y su música parece siempre tratar de ir un paso más allá, y en numerosas ocasiones ese paso más resulta demasiado para mi gusto. Me sucede en cierto modo parecido con otro gran guitarrista, el sueco Yngwie Malmsteen, son músicos que en ocasiones parecen pecar de soberbia musicalmente hablando y lo que logran al final es una música demasiado compleja por tratar de demostrar su virtuosismo, perdiendose un poco en su propia idea sin darse cuenta de que su música es también para otros. Luca Turilli sacó en 1999 este gran disco conceptual, muy en la línea de lo que hacía con Rhapsody en aquellos momentos, y para mi gusto es uno de sus mejores disco aparte de su banda madre. Bajo el nombre de Luca Turilli sacó tres disco de estudio, y siempre siguiendo una línea conceptual, tipo Rhapsody, y a partir de 2011, cansado de tener que seguir una línea conceptual que una todo el disco forma Luca Turilli's Rhapsody para funcionar más como una banda tradicional en que sus composiciones no tengan por que seguir una misma linea argumental. Para su primer disco, este King of the nordic twilight, se une al cantante Olaf Hayer, a quien se puede escuchar también en Magic kingdom, o Dionysus entre otras bandas. El disco que nos ocupa es realmente una continuación de Rhapsody, en que la orquestación y el teclado resultan importantes en el desarrollo de las canciones. Quiero destacar la canción the ancient forest of elves aunque podeís escoger muchas otras de este gran album. Dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - DIO - Holy Diver

HOLY DIVER

Hoy quiero hablar de un clásico entre los clásicos que no necesita presentación, el Estadounidense Ronnie James Dio. Hablar de este músico es hablar de una leyenda dentro de nuestra música. Comenzó a dar vueltas por esto de la composición con tan solo 15 años, lo que nos pone al final de la década de los 50 en proyectos de rock 'n ' roll. Pronto fue evolucionando musicalmente y se puede decir que es uno de los padres de nuestro género. Con su grupo Elf entabla relación musical con Deep Purple con los que giran por Estados Unidos cautivando a Ritchie Blackmore, creador y compositor guitarrista del mítico grupo quien le propone en 1972 a Dio grabar un proyecto en paralelo a Deep purple llamado Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow en que él cantaría. A partir de 1975 con la salida de Blackmore de Deep Purple, Rainbow se haría realidad y Dio cantaría en sus tres primeros discos. Ya consagrado Dio se enrola en la mítica formación Black Sabbath, sustituyendo a Ozzy Osbourne, y con ellos graba 3 discos de estudio que le terminarían de dar la fama necesaria  antes de formar el grupo con su propio nombre a principios de los 80 con el que empieza a sacar material de estudio en 1983, en concreto este Holy diver que os dejo en el blog, su primera obra de estudio y una de las mejores. Bajo la denominación de Dio saca 10 discos de estudio que cuentan con auténticos clásicos de heavy metal hasta 2004. Finalmente hizo una reunión con los miembros de Black Sabbath bajo en nombre de Heaven & Hell con quien sacan el disco the devil you know en 2009. En 2010 Dio muere de cancer. He querido dejar su tema homónimo al disco Holy diver, de 1983, uno de sus himnos del que dejo un enlace a youtube. Como dato curioso diré que a Dio se le atribuye la costumbre tan heavy de los dedos en cuerno, toda una seña de identidad dentro de nuestro mundillo, gesto que comenzó a utilizar desde sus primeras actuaciones, influido por su madre que por lo visto lo hacía cuando él era pequeño para ahuyentar al diablo.

Canciones para una vida - Theocracy - The Master Storyteller

THE MASTER STORYTELLER

Theocracy es un grupo que se formó en Estados Unidos en 2002 y que surgió como un proyecto de un solo músico Matt Smith que se encargaba de todos los instrumentos de la banda. Con esas condiciones sacó su primer disco de estudio en 2003 con el nombre de Theocracy como el del grupo, disco en el que se encargó de las funciones vocales, las guitarras, el bajo, los teclados y de programar la bateria. Tras este alarde, decide en sus siguientes obras ir incluyendo miembros que se ocupasen de otros instrumentos. No será hasta 2008 cuando saque su segunda obra de estudio en la que dos músicos más se encargan de la guitarra y la bateria. A partir de su tercera obra de estudio, este As the world bleed ya cuenta con otros 4 músicos además de él mismo lo que le da a la banda una formación más clásica, ocupándose Matt de las funciones de vocalista, teclista y guitarra adicional. Theocracy es una buena banda de power metal clásico, con influencias del power cristiano sueco, de excelente factura y en la que destaca su excelente voz y su cuidada composición. Os traigo al blog este disco As the world bleed de 2011 que es el mejor para mi gusto, en el que encontramos una colección de canciones que hacen que este sea un buen cd. Se trata de la tercera y última obra de estudio hasta la fecha de esta reseña y es muy recomendable, aunque tampoco debemos olvidarnos de sus primeras obras que tienen muy buenos temas. Dejo un enlace a youtube de la canción The master storyteller, un tema con mucho filo que enseguida se queda en la cabeza y que enseña el gran potencial de esta banda que puede llegar muy lejos por este camino. Como dato curioso encontramos en su web una serie de canciones de temática navideña para descargarse que cada año Matt Smith va añadiendo.

STRENGTH OF VALHALLA

The Storyteller es una banda de Suecia formada en 1995 que hace un power metal de corte clásico que podría compararse instrumentalmente al sonido de bandas como sus compatriotas Hammerfall. Se trata de un grupo de gran talento pero de no demasiada repercusión. Comienzan a sacar discos de estudio en el año 2000, habiendo realizado desde entonces 5 obras y un EP. Hay que decir que han tenido bastante estabilidad en la formación en lo referente a sus miembros pero aún así tuvieron una época de pausa entre 2006 y 2011 para a partir de ese año sacar material nuevo, en concreto este Dark Legacy de 2013 del que os dejo la buena canción Strength of Valhalla. Desde luego entre la discografía de la banda encontrareis grandes canciones, y muy probablemente esta última obra no sea la mejor de ellos, de hecho a mi me gustan mucho todos los discos y se puede decir que no hay grandes evoluciones musicales en su sonido, así que diría que este grupo es muy homogéneo musicalmente. Esta canción es un buen ejemplo de la homogeneidad a la que hago referencia pues después del parón siguen sonando muy parecido. Una buena banda para descubrir o redescubrir. Canciones para una vida - Magnus Karlsson's Freefall - Higher

HIGHER

Hoy traigo al blog a un guitarrista extraordinario y gran compositor sueco llamado Magnus Karlsson. Se trata de un guitarrista que ha tocado desde comienzos de los 2000 en muchos proyectos diferentes formando parte de varias bandas de primer orden y que el año pasado ha dado la sorpresa de este buen disco de power metal de grandisima calidad y con colaboraciones de lujo. Magnus Karlsson comenzó su andadura musical como guitarrista y compositor en un proyecto del sello Frontier records para unir a dos grandes cantantes, nada menos que Russell Allen (Symphony X) y Jorn Lande (Ex de muchas bandas, entre ellas de Masterplan), saliendo la banda Allen - Lande de la unión, pues bien, la mente compositiva que hay detrás es este señor llamado Magnus Karlsson. Ha realizado algún proyecto más del estilo con Tony Harnell cantante de TNT y otra gente en una banda llamada Starbreaker y además puso las guitarras y ayudó en la composición en uno de los discos en solitario de Bob Catley (Magnum). Además, desde 2009 se unió como guitarrista a la gran banda Primal Fear de la que hablaremos en este blog. Con semejante curriculum no sorprende que este disco Magnus Karlsson's Freefall suene bien y que esté plagado de colaboraciones de lujo a la voz, como entre otros Russell Allen (Symphony X), Tony Harnell (TNT), Mark Boals (Yngwie Malmsteen), David Readman (Pink Cream 69) o Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear) que aparece cantando en el tema que quiero destacaros de este album, Higher, aunque os aconsejo escuchar entero el disco porque es realmente bueno. Canciones para una vida - Thyrfing - Höst

HÖST

Thyrfing es una banda del llamado Viking metal. Se formaron en 1995 en Suecia y como particularidad cantan en su idioma natal, el sueco. La banda surgió como un proyecto paralelo ya que dos de los miembros fundadores militaban en grupos en activo y los gustos comunes por la mitología nórdica les hizo crear este proyecto que lleva el nombre de Thyrfing en referencia a una espada que aparece en varias ocasiones en la mitología de los paises del norte. Comienzan a sacar demos con una buena acogida entre la escena underground empezando a sacar discos de estudio en 1998, hasta completar a fecha de esta reseña 7 obras de un viking metal sin concesiones, en que no se puede dudar de la contundencia de sus composiciones lo que unido a que cantan en sueco ha hecho probablemente que no sean tan reconocidos como merecen ser por su inegable calidad. En 1999 sacan su segunda obra de estudio que para mi gusto es la mejor, es el disco Valdr Galga del que hablaré otro día. Thyrfing mete en sus composiciones elementos tradicionales a modo de flautas y melodias de teclado así como percusiones tradicionales en alguna ocasión. Hoy quiero dejaros uno de mis temas favoritos, se trata de la canción Höst del album Fartsotstider de 2005, su quinta obra de estudio, una canción que desde la primera melodia ya engancha para dar paso a su desgarradora e hiper agresiva voz y con un coro épico, un tema que te transporta a su amado lejano norte. En fin, una banda a la que merece la pena acercarse y que merece más reconocimiento del que tiene. Dejo un enlace a youtube así como una traducción a ingles de la  letra de la canción.

Canciones para una vida - Crematory - Tears Of Time

TEARS OF TIME

Crematory es una banda alemana que hace una música que se mueve entre el death metal tradicional y el industrial. Se les ha etiquetado como góticos, pero yo creo que hacen una música que recoge elementos de todas esas variantes para crear un estilo personal, y lo logran. Para mi es uno de los grandes en su género y es sin duda una de las bandas que más me gustan haciedo este sonido. Crematory se crea en Alemania en 1991 comenzando a editar discos de estudio en 1993, momento desde el que han sacado a la luz 12 cd's, que han ido evolucionando desde un death más clásico en sus primeros dos discos hasta un sonido más industrial en sus creaciones intermedias y finales. En su música alternan las voces guturales con voces limpias asi como canciones o discos enteros cantados en inglés con otros cantados en alemán y a diferencia de otras bandas Crematory conserva practicamente intacta la formación inicial del grupo. A medida que evolucionaron musicalmente fueron haciendo que los teclados fuesen teniendo una mayor presencia hasta llegar a ser toda una seña de identidad de su música. He querido traer al blog uno de sus primeros discos, El Illusions, su tercera obra de estudio, de 1995, que aunque no sea el disco que más me gusta de ellos si que contiene alguna de sus canciones que más me gustan, como este Tears of time del que os dejo un enlace a youtube. Voveremos a Crematory más adelante aunque solo sea para hablar del que a mi juicio es uno de sus mejores discos completos, el Revolution de 2004.

Canciones para una vida - Prime Time - Free The Dream

FREE THE DREAM

Hoy os traigo al blog un grupo absolutamente desconocido, los daneses Prime Time, una banda que hace una música dificil de catalogar dentro de un estilo concreto pues se mueven en el filo de diferentes estilos aunque podríamos definir su música como un Hard - heavy melódico con influencias progresivas, pero las canciones no siguen un mismo patrón y desde luego tampoco sus discos de estudio. Este proyecto se forma en 1997 y tras tres años de actividad en la que editan sus tres obras de estudio cesan como banda. Nos dejan tres interesantes discos, sobre todo para mí este Free the Dream, la tercera de sus obras, del año 2000, en donde encontramos un puñado de canciones de las que quiero destacar este título homónimo al disco, Free the dream, que resulta un buen ejemplo de lo que encontramos en este cd. Es un tema en que la melodia de teclado está presente continuamente creando una atmósfera en la canción. En las labores de vocalista encontramos a un Eduard Novinga que a mi me gusta mucho, con una buena voz melódica que hace que escuchar este disco resulte muy sencillo.

Una buena banda que se acerca al estilo de grandes bandas melodicas de rock clásico pero con un sello personal, o de bandas progresivas poco conocidas como los también daneses Cornerstone o Royal Hunt también compatriotas suyos, bandas que aportaron a alguno de sus miembros a este proyecto.  Siempre merece la pena descubrir este tipo de cosas para completar la banda sonora de nuestra vida. Canciones para una vida - Freedom Call - Blackened Sun

BLACKENED SUN

Hablar de Freedom Call es hablar de grandes musicos. La banda alemana se forma en 1998 por el bateria Dan Zimmermann (Gamma Ray) y el comositor, teclista, vocalista y técnico de sonido Chris Bay. Ambos llevaban ya una larga relación musical desde 1988 en que habían coincidido en grupos de versiones como China white o Lanzer a lo largo de la década anterior a la formación de Freedom Call. Deciden darse la oportunidad de crear algo propio justo cuando le bateria Dan entra en Gamma Ray. Freedom Call comienza de esta manera y siempre ha sabido rodearse por grandes músicos, aparte de los mencionados Chris y Dan, por ejemplo Sascha Gerstner en las guitarras hasta su entrada en Helloween, o Ilker Ersin al bajo. Freedom Call comienza a grabar discos de estudio en 1999 sacando hasta la fecha de esta reseña 8 discos en total, a cual mejor. Siempre que hablo de Freedom Call digo lo mismo, es una de esas raras bandas de las que puedo decir que me gusta todo su material, creo que no hay ninguna canción que me desagrade. Su Power metal, muy "happy" en muchas ocasiones te pone las pilas pues su composición es muy cuidada y su producción es simplemente perfecta. Sus letras suelen tener ese punto épico en muchas ocasiones al igual que su melodia apoyada en teclado continuamente. He querido traer al blog este disco Dimensions de 2007, su quinta obra de estudio para acercaros uno de los temas que más me gustan de la banda, por poner uno. Blackened Sun es un medio tiempo que quizás no sea el tema más representativo de la banda pero que a mi siempre me ha encantado. El disco entero es genial pero bueno, como ya he dicho antes se trata de una de esas bandas que son mi debilidad, asi que acercaos a su música sin miedo a equivocaros pues cojais lo que cojais, para mi suena bien.
