AS  ARROWS  HAIL

Poco a poco los estadounidenses Owlbear van dando pasos adelante en su carrera musical aún en sus primeros pasos, eso sí, pasos suficientes para habernos dado cuenta ya de que van en serio y que su propuesta es lo suficientemente sólida como para pensar en una carrera a largo plazo. Si primer disco de estudio "Chaos to the realm" vio la luz en 2023, y tras un EP en 2024, en este 2025 para el 28 de febrero verá la luz su continuación en formato larga duración, "Feather and claw" del que en estos días nos han dejado su adelanto "As arrows hail" del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Pentagram - Forever My Queen

FOREVER  MY  QUEEN

Volviendo a los momentos de los pioneros, esas bandas que dieron los primeros pasos en un sendero que después otros recorrerían tras sus pasos, dentro del doom primigenio encontramos a Pentagram, desde Estados Unidos, grupo que gustaba de ese sonido aún en ciernes, con ese tempo cadencioso, sus ambientes sonoros oscuros de temática sobre la muerte y el ocultismo. Formados en 1971 bajo el nombre de macabre, y desde 1972 como Pentagram, sus primeros años underground hasta bien entrada la década de los 80 se resumen en una demo y un cuarteto de singles, poniendo una base a una carrera que se ha extendido en diversas épocas hasta la actualidad con 10 LP's de estudio a sus espaldas en total, si incluimos "Lightning in a bottle" que verá la luz el 31 de enero de este 2025. De su época inicial, en que se les puede considerar como pioneros, quiero dejar en el blog uno de sus temas, "Forever my queen", de 1973, incluido como el primer tema de su demo, buen ejemplo de ese sonido que abría camino, y del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Las suizas Burning Witches siguen su camino adelante compositivamente hablando con un par de singles aislados el recién pasado 2024, tras su cuarto trabajo en formato LP "The dark tower" de 2023, en lo que puede interpretarse como un hipotético avance aún sin confirmar de un quinto album para este 2025. Canciones para una vida - Accept - Tired Of Me

TIRED  OF  ME

1979 fue el testigo de la puesta de largo de la banda germana Accept, pionera en su escena natal (sin contar a Scorpions claro) en lo que al sonido heavy se refiere, evidentemente Accept encarnó un sonido más contundente, más propiamente dicho heavy metal, un sonido imitado luego por otras bandas, muchas de ellas alemanas, grupo unido a dos nombres propios por encima de los demás, Wolf Hoffmann a la guitarra, alma compositiva motor y el sin duda más fiel a la banda, y claro, Udo, que desertaría relativamente pronto, haciendo que la banda durante muchos años pasase por auténticos apuros hasta su actual resurgimiento desde la irrupción de Mark Tornillo a la voz, en definitiva, en 1979 nacía este mito, desde el punto de vista compositivo, a través del disco homónimo "Accept" del que dejo hoy en el blog otro de sus temas, "Tired of me".

12  BC  LEGIONS

Los estadounidenses Niviane siguen finalmente su carrera desde una perspectiva compositiva en este 2025 tras un lustro de silencio en ese sentido, y lo hacen con un sonido plenamente acorde a lo mostrado hasta ahora en su discografía. "Queen of phantoms" será su tercer LP de estudio que verá la luz de manera oficial el siete de marzo, y hasta ese momento nos van dejando ya algún adelanto como el tema "12 BC Legions" del que dejo hoy en el blog un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Scorpions - The Sails Of Charon

 

THE  SAILS  OF  CHARON

Es siempre buena idea hacer un repaso por la trayectoria larga de alguna de esas bandas a las que se les pone el título de mitos, uno de esos grupos que han ido más allá de las fronteras del sonido que practican para pasar a ser patrimonio de la música sin más, y dentro del rock, del heavy, uno de los que ostentan sin duda esas características son Scorpions, una de las bandas que todo el mundo conoce al menos de oidas, y en no pocas ocasiones unido a sus baladas, lo que no deja de resultar un poco injusto ya que han sido mucho más que eso, su último zarpazo de 2022, "Rock Believer" es prueba suficiente de ello, y más aún, los trabajos iniciales y de su mitad de camino. Banda influyente, pionera, dueña de obras antológicas, y de la que hoy quiero recuperar otro de su temas, hoy uno perteneciente a su quinto LP de estudio, "Taken By Force" de 1977, concretamente a su canción "The sails of Charon", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

GARUDA  (EATER  OF  SNAKES)

Los alemanes Brainstorm están de estreno a comienzos de 2025, con la que será su décimo cuarta obra de estudio en formato LP, en la que continuan con su tendencia más reciente hacia la apertura al gran público a través de sus composiciones más asequibles en clave de europower, algo a lo que Seeb Levermann que una vez más se encarga de la producción, ha contribuido claramente desde que se hizo cargo de ese apartado. El disco llevará por título "Plague of rats" y verá la luz de forma oficial a finales del mes de febrero, y en estos días nos han dejado su primer adelanto, "Garuda (Eater of snakes), del que dejo un enlace a youtube de su clip oficial.

Canciones para una vida - Crimson Valley - Last Battle

LAST  BATTLE

Volvamos hoy a la bastante prolífica escena polaca, otra de las que han crecido ultimamente en cantidad y calidad de bandas, para acercarnos al material de Crimson Valley, un grupo que lleva ya unos años en activo, concretamente desde 2009, a pesar de que su producción discográfica no sea precisamente grande, tan solo un LP en este tiempo, ("crossing the sky" de 2012), al que han seguido solo dos EP's, "Halls of victory" en 2015, y en este 2024 "Storm", casi uná década después del último material editado y que esperemos sea el pistoletazo de salida para una época con mayor continuidad. En cuanto al sonido del grupo, encontramos un heavy power metal bastante de concepción europea, vocalista femenina con una forma de cantar bastante heavy, alejada de los estereotipos sinfónico operísticos, (algo que algunos agradecemos), y que sin inventar nada nuevo en absoluto si que resulta bastante agradable al oido. WHOLE  LOTTA  LOVE

La irrupción de bandas para la época innovadoras, que tenían esa capacidad para llegar y tirar barreras, para arrastrar masas, hicieron mucho por la música rock, y por todo lo que tras su sonido llegaría inceptivado por él, uno de esos grupos indiscutiblemente fue Led Zeppelin, quienes popularizaron el hard rock casi como ningún otro por lo temprano de su irrupción y por el éxito sin precedentes dentro de ese tipo de sonido a nivel global antes de su llegada. Formados en 1968 por Jimmy Page, fueron parte necesaria y fundamental del desarrollo del sonido heavy que una década después arrasaría a medio mundo. En 1969 editaban sus dos primeros albumes, Led Zeppelin I, y II, y del segundo de ellos quiero dejar hoy en el blog una de sus canciones icónicas, un album del que vendieron solo en Estados Unidos 10 millones de copias, en parte gracias a temas como "Whole lotta love" del que hoy dejo un enlace a youtube, tema icónico y experimental, lleno de fuerza y energía sobre todo para la época.

Canciones para una vida - Manntra - Skal

 

SKAL

Vamos con una banda bastante desconocida a pesar de llevar ya tiempo en activo, se trata de los croatas Manntra, un grupo que lleva ocho albumes de estudio si incluimos el último de ellos que aún no ha visto la luz, "Titans" cuya salida oficial se espera para el mes de febrero de 2025. Se trata de una banda que ha cantado todos sus discos en croata, lo que puede explicar su limitada repercusión internacional, aunque desde su anterior trabajo de 2023, "War of the heathens" comienzan ha hacerlo en inglés, creo que acertadamente por el enorme potencial de la banda y su posible proyección al mercado global. Hoy quiero dejar en el blog una de las canciones que adelantan de su próxima obra "Titans", concretamente la canción "Skal" una versión de "Miracle of sound" y de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Deep Purple - Child In Time

CHILD  IN  TIME

Vamos de nuevo con una de esas obras que han alcanzado un nivel mítico, uno de esos discos en los que hay consenso sobre su importancia por la obra en sí misma así como por lo que supuso para la música, dentro del rock, y para lo que vendría después con la etiqueta heavy a nivel planetario, se trata de "In Rock" de Deep Purple, de 1970, su cuarto LP de estudio, con una formación de ensueño, músicos importantes por separado pero que juntos hicieron este disco imprescindible. El disco obtendría mayor reconocimiento en Europa que en Estados Unidos, pero a pesar de ello su importancia es innegable también en la escena americana. Estos británicos pusieron las bases para muchas cosas, experimentando en algunos temas, posiblemente el caso más evidente sea del disco sea la enorme "Child in time", una de las canciones más importantes en la carrera de la banda y uno de los temas importantes de la historia del hard rock y del heavy, con John Lord detrás de la composición y la increible interpretación vocal de Ian Gillan para la historia de nuestro sonido, un temazo del que dejo hoy en el blog un enlace a youtube.

BLOOD  DYNASTY

Los suecos Arch Enemy están en uno de sus mejores momentos, al menos en lo que a reconocimiento general se refiere, la banda no ha hecho más que crecer y crecer, sobre todo en la última década hasta transformarse en el gigante que es hoy, y, fieles a su filosofía compositiva, 2025 será el testigo de su nueva obra de estudio, "Blood Dynasty", disco que verá la luz de forma oficial el próximo 28 de marzo del inminente 2025, y supondrá ya su décimo tercer LP de estudio, y el cuarto desde la incorporación de la enorme Alissa White-Gluz, quien les ha terminado de dar el empujón final para alcanzar la cima. Canciones para una vida - Whitesnake - Lovehunter

 

LOVEHUNTER

Para finales de los setenta, tras su paso por Deep Purple entre 1973 y 1976, David Coverdale, fundador de Whitesnake en 1978, decide buscar su propia banda, más influenciada por el hard rock e incluso en ocasiones el blues, un grupo que reunió a grandes nombres como Micky Moody y Bernie Marsden a la guitarra, Neil Murray al bajo, Peter Solley a los teclados que en seguida sería sustituido por Jon Lord, (también ex de los Purple), o Dave Dowle a la batería que pronto sería sustituido por Ian Paice, sea como sea el baile de nombres es lo suficientemente importante como para que no debiera sorprenderse nadie de las cotas de éxito que alcanzaría la banda. Como decía, en 1979 la banda graba su segundo LP de estudio, "Lovehunter", que sería el disco que daría a la banda un escalon ya importante de reconocimiento a través del éxito en las listas de ventas británicas, alcanzando en ellas por vez primera el top 30. Nacía una banda de las reconocidas y reconocibles y de ese segundo disco dejo hoy en el blog el tema que le dió nombre, "Lovehunter" del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

CREEPSHOW

Tobias Sammet, centrado ya por completo desde hace mucho, dejando en el limbo a Edguy, se ha transformado en una de esas figuras importantes dentro de nuestro mundillo, uno de esos músicos que además, por la naturaleza de Avantasia, ha establecido prósperas relaciones con enormes músicos internacionales lo que a su vez ha agrandado aún más su propia figura, es por tanto uno de esos nombres ante los que todas las miradas apuntan cada vez que hace un movimiento compositivo, y en esas estamos, en el inminente 2025 editará de forma oficial su décimo ya LP de estudio, "Here be dragons", del que en estos días ha dejado su primer adelanto, "Creepshow" del que dejo hoy en el blog un enlace a youtube de su clip oficial.

Canciones para una vida - Death SS - Murder Angels

MURDER  ANGELS

Vamos con otra banda pionera, otra que demuestra que el inicio  de nuestro sonido actual fue mucho más global que las consabidas escenas británica y estadounidense, aunque en lo que todos estamos de acuerdo es que el vloumen inmenso de grupos se centraba sobre todo en las dos citadas naciones en los comienzos, había bandas experimentando, abriendo senderos en los lugares más variopintos, hoy, a través de Death SS nos referiremos a la escena italiana, con un sonido incipiente de heavy metal doom metal de aire absolutamente oscuro, sin duda adelantados a su época en este concepto, Death SS son un grupo que ha tenido una carrera larga (desde 1977 hasta la actualidad), aunque irregular (repartida en no menos de cinco épocas diferentes, una de ellas con cambio de nombre incluido "Sylvester's Death"), para terminar editando, a fecha de esta reseña, un total de 10 LP`s de estudio a los que añadir otros cuatro trabajos en formato EP. Hoy quiero dejar en el blog algo de su primera época tan underground, compuesto antes de los 80 aunque recopilado posteriormente en 1987 bajo el nombre de "1977 - 1984", concretamente la canción de 1979 "Murder Angels" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.
