Canciones para una vida - Blind Guardian - Majesty

MAJESTY

Un disco de los inicios de una de las bandas de primer nivel en esto del heavy metal. Evidentemente nos referimos a Blind Guardian y su "Battalions of fear", su primera obra, de 1988, y menudo debut, pues se trata de un discazo. Ya hemos dicho que  Blind Guardian se formó en 1984 en Alemania, bajo el nombre de Lucifer's Heritage, con el que funcionaron hasta 1986, en que cambian a Blind Guardian. Los miembros fundadores fueron Hansi Kursch y Andre Olbrich, incorporándose al poco tiempo Thomen Stauch y Marcus Siepen. De ellos solo Thomen Stauch ha dejado la banda en 2005. Algunos otros músicos han pasado por el grupo y grandes colaboraciones como la de Kai Hansen, pero en general Blind Guardian han tenido mucha estabilidad en su formación. Influenciados por la literatura, (sobre todo Tolkien y Stephen King) y el cine, sus letras hacen referencia a esos temas y en ocasiones ayudan a la linea argumental de canciones de la banda o incluso de discos enteros. Tienen ya 10 discos de estudio, a cual mejor, lo que les ha creado un nombre entre los grupos internacionales más respetados dentro de nuestro mundillo. Volviendo al disco que nos ocupa, se trata de los inicios de la banda en que su influencia más speed metal era evidente aunque con una influencia grande de la banda Helloween ya que ambas estaban en contacto y crecian casi al mismo tiempo, de hecho, Kai Hansen de Helloween colaboraría en la siguiente obra de Blind Guardian "Follow the blind" de 1989. Este "Battalions of fear" tiene temas memorables, como "guardian of the blind", "Run for the night", "Battalions of fear", o "Majesty", temazo del que hoy dejo un enlace a youtube. Canciones para una vida - Finntroll - Trollhammaren

TROLLHAMMAREN

Otra banda finlandesa para hoy, son Finntroll. Fundados en 1997, han editado seis obras de estudio más 3 EP's. Comienzan a editar material en 1999 con su primer larga duración "Midnattens Widunder" y hoy quiero dejar un tema de su tercera obra "Nattfodd", de 2004, una de las que más me gustan en conjunto. Su música esta enraizada en un sonido muy folk con una base de black metal, y sus canciones son de temática mítica, de las profundas creencias paganas finlandesas, tales como trolls, naturaleza, etc. Curiosamente sus canciones están cantadas en sueco en lugar de en finlandes por dos motivos, el primero es que su primer vocalista Jam "Katla" Jamsen pertenecía a una minoria de finlandeses que utilizan la lengua sueca habitualmente y además argumentaba que era un idioma que se adaptaba mejor a la música que realizaba. Cuando en 2003 se vió forzado a dejar la banda por un problema serio en sus cuerdas vocales, sus dos sustitutos posteriores en funciones vocales decidieron continuar con esta tradición dentro de la banda y así el grupo sigue componiendo las canciones y cantando en sueco. Hoy quiero dejar una de sus canciones más conocidas, buen tema para conocerlos si aun no lo has hecho, se trata de "Trollhammaren", un tema que enseguida se mete en la cabeza por su pegadiza melodía. La verdad es que merece la pena introducirse un poco en su discografía pues seguro que serán muchos los temas que os harán disfrutar de este grupo finlandés. Canciones para una vida - Judas Priest - You've Got Another Thing Comin'

 YOU'VE GOT ANOTHER THING COMIN'

Otra de las obras de los británicos Judas Priest, sacada de la época más exitosa a nivel internacional cuando eran de los más importantes a nivel mundial dentro del heavy. Esta época podriamos acotarla en la década de los ochenta. Se trata de su "Screaming for vengeance" de 1982, disco que les supuso unas ventas que le dieron un doble disco de platino y con el que llegaron a lo más alto en las listas de ventas de Estados Unidos. El disco fue su octava obra de estudio y su estilo estaba perfectamente engrasado para colocarlos en un lugar en la historia de nuestra música. Varios singles son seña de identidad de este disco, Así, "Electric eye", "Riding on the wind", o el tema que quiero dejar hoy, "You've got another thing comin'", que llegó a ser un éxito en las radios de Estados Unidos contribuyeron notablemente a ese doble platino que alcanzó el album. Sin duda este "You've got another thing comin'" es uno de sus temas más coreados en directo, y dada su calidad e importancia es el tema del que dejo un enlace hoy a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Battlelore - House Of Heroes

HOUSE OF HEROES

Ya hemos hablado de este gran grupo en nuestro blog con anterioridad, y como ya dijimos, es una banda finlandesa que ha estado una década sacando discos, entre 2001 y 2011, desafortunadamente no está muy clara su continuidad ya que como ellos mismos dicen en su Web oficial se han tomado un descanso indefinido, mala pinta tiene, lo cual es una pena. Se trata de un grupo que hace un heavy black metal sinfonico y epico, alternando voces limpias femeninas con guturales masculinas, de impecable composición y melodias continuas se trata de una banda espectacular, con algunos temas instrumentales evocativos que transportan al sitios sacados de la mente de Tolkien, ya que hacen continua referencia en sus letras al genial creador de fantasía. Tienen 6 discos de estudio, a cual mejor. Hoy me quiero referir a su cuarta obra de estudio, "Evernight", del año 2007. La verdad es que la homogeneidad en su discografía es grande, y para bien, es decir, todos sus discos gozan de una gran calidad tanto compositiva como interpretativa, y así, si te gusta el sonido que hacen te gustarán todas sus obras. Atentos a la edición especial de este disco que trae dos bonus track muy buenos, de esos que no son de relleno, merece la pena buscarlos. Yo quiero dejar una enlace a youtube del tema que abre el disco, de este "house of heroes", típico single de la banda, facil de escuchar desde la primera escucha. Esperemos que decidan reunirse de nuevo y pronto nos regalen un nuevo disco.

Canciones para una vida - Sacred Reich - Independent

INDEPENDENT

Un poquito de thrash estadounidense para hoy, se trata de Sacred Reich. Este grupo se forma en 1985 y comienza a editar material de estudio en 1987 con su primera obra "ignorance". Han editado un total de 4 obras de estudio más 2 EP's entre 1987 y 1996. Entre 2000 y 2006 el grupo cesó en toda actividad para reunirse en 2007 de nuevo aunque tan solo para interpretar sus temas en directo, y según su fundador, vocalista y bajista Phil Rind, sin intención de volver a grabar material nuevo por el momento. Hoy quiero dejar en el blog una canción de su tercera y penúltima obra de estudio "Independent", del año 1993. Su música es un thrash metal clásico, de gran carga reivindicativa desde el punto de vista social, muy en la onda de este tipo de grupos americanos. Canciones para una vida - Accept - Breaker

BREAKER

Ya hemos hablado de Accept en el blog, y como ya dijimos probablemente es uno de los primeros grandes grupos alemanes de esto del heavy,  junto con Scorpions. La banda se forma en 1968 pero funciona en la escena underground alemana durante al menos 8 años hasta que sacan la cabeza. Durante todo ese tiempo fueron conocidos como "Band X",  fundada por Udo Dirkscheneider a la voz, Michael Wagener a la guitarra y Dieter Rubach al bajo. Este grupo ha estado siempre marcado por constantes idas y venidas de sus componentes y por cambios continuos de formación. Así, ya en 1976, Udo cambia el nombre a la banda pasando a llamarse Accept y además sustituye al bajo y al guitarra por Peter Baltes y Wolf Hoffmann respectivamente, este último pieza clave en el sonido Accept a lo largo de toda su carrera. Accept graba su primer material titulado "Accept" en 1979, y desde entonces 14 discos de estudio más 5 EP's han visto la luz. A pesar de ser una cantidad respetable se antoja algo corta la producción musical mirando al tiempo en activo, pero hemos de tener en cuenta que se trata de una banda que se ha enfrentado a tres reuniones y a una enorme inestabilidad, lo que les da un mérito grande al seguir en activo. Su primer disco en estudio no les da el éxito esperado aun recibiendo buenas críticas. En 1980 sacan su segunda obra, "I'm a rebel" (un discazo para mi), y con ella ya empiezan a consechar seguidores dentro y fuera de Europa, lo que se verá incrementado con la salida del "Breaker" (Obra mestra) de 1981, que les lleva a una gira mundial con Judas Priest, que les consolida definitivamente, y que es el disco del que quiero extraer un tema hoy. Esta tercera obra como digo de la banda, de 1981, es el de asentamiento de la banda y con su salida se firma un contrato con su manager Gaby Hauke que durará toda la historia de la banda, elemento de estabilidad que les ha venido muy bien viendo la inestabilidad interna del grupo. El disco "Breaker" es todo un discazo, con temas memorables, altamente recomendable para comprarlo original, un pedazo de historia fundamental del heavy con temazos como "starlight", "Burning", "run if you can",  o el "breaker", homónimo al disco y del que hoy dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Manowar - Carry On

CARRY ON

Otra de las obras de los estadounidenses Manowar en nuestro blog, en esta ocasión un disco que les supuso un paso adelante a nivel internacional, el "Fighting the world" de 1987. Se trata de su quinta obra de estudio. En aquellos momentos Manowar estaba en plena conquista del mercado internacional, y para ello habían ya firmado con varias discográficas diferentes a estas alturas de su carrera. Para este disco firmaron con "Atalntic Records", una de las grandes, lo que les aseguraba mayor distribución para poder legar a más rincones hasta ese momento fuera de su influencia. La operación resulto ser un éxito pero para que así fuera tuvo mucha importancia que el disco era espectacular, el más pulido hasta ese momento y el comienzo de una senda de éxito y un sonido muy reconocible desde ahí en adelante. Además es con este disco cuando comienzan a contar con los servicios de Ken Kelly como portadista, una de las señas de identidad del grupo en los siguientes discos. El éxito con este larga duración les terminó de hacer un nombre entre el gran público y les abriría las puertas a su época más exitosa en cuestión de ventas a nivel mundial, y es que este disco está muy bien compuesto, con grandes temas que hacen dificil quedarse solo con uno. Hoy quiero escoger uno de sus himnos más aclamados en directo, el "Carry On", tema típico de la banda del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Amon Amarth - Cry Of The Black Birds

CRY OF THE BLACK BIRDS

Uno de los grandes dentro del death metal internacional en nuestro blog, se trata de los suecos Amon Amarth. Esta banda nace en 1988 bajo el nombre de "Scum", con la que graban una demo, pero tras la incorporación de Johan Hegg en 1991 a la banda, en funciones de cantante, el grupo da un giro hacia el death metal y deciden cambiar en 1992 su nombre a "Amon Amarth", cuyo nombre significa "Monte del destino" en una de las lenguas de la amplia mitología de Tolkien. Lejos de buscar la inspiración para las letras y la música en el género fantástico Tolkineano, este grupo sueco se nutre exclusivamente de la mitología nórdica vikinga. Han editado hasta la fecha de esta reseña 9 discos de estudio más dos EP's de un death metal, más crudo en sus inicios para progresivamente girar hacia el death metal melódico desde la mitad de su carrera en adelante. La banda cuenta con una estabilidad bastante grande desde casi sus inicios, no teniendo cambios en sus filas desde 1999 en que el último de los miembros actuales, el bateria Fredrik Andersson se incorporó a la banda. Su primer larga duración, "Once sent from the golden hall" data de 1998 y la última hasta la fecha de esta reseña, " Deceiver of the gods" de 2013. El disco del que hoy quiero extraer un tema es de su época intermedia, "with oden on our side", su sexta obra de estudio, de 2006, donde se nota ya ese giro hacia un death más melódico y acorde con el sonido actual, donde se crean increibles melodias de guitarra acompañadas con esos zarpazos enérgicos de death metal que tan buen resultado dan. Del disco al que hoy me refiero se pueden extraer muchos buenos temas, haciendo de él un disco de esos que te puedes comprar porque merece la pena, así temas como "Under the northern star", "Valhall awaits me", "Runes to my memory", o este "Cry of the black birds" del que hoy dejo un enlace a youtube y en general toda la obra hacen que el disco se te meta dentro. Volveremos a Amon Amarth más adelante en el blog pues su discografía da para más de una reseña.

Canciones para una vida - Custard - Up To The Sky

UP TO THE SKY

Custard es una banda alemana que hace un power metal, un poco en plan true metal como los americanos Manowar o como sus compatriotas alemanes Majesty, aunque con un toque más en plan power metal de corte clásico europeo, con elementos speed metal que les alejan realmente de lo que hacen las anteriores bandas citadas. Custard se forma en 1987, por Chris Klapper, bateria, que comenzó la andadura de esta banda como un proyecto para diversión personal sin mucha intención más alla de juntarse con unos amigos para tocar en locales de su zona. A medida que diversos musicos fueron engrosando su "lineup", la banda fue cogiendo peso lo que hizo al músico plantearse grabar algo de material. En 1992 sacan su primera demo y en 1996 su primer material en forma de EP. Tras ello, han editado entre 1999 y 2012 cinco discos de estudio con los que, si bien no han alcanzado un gran exito, si que han demostrado un buen hacer musical que nos ha dejado algunos buenos discos y temas. Quizás parte de su poco reconocimiento internacional sea también debido a la inestabilidad en la formación, ya que el único miembro fundador de la banda que queda es Chris Klapper, y de hecho, la mayor parte de miembros que actualmente militan en la formación llevan apenas 4 o 5 años en ella, tanto cambio nunca beneficia a un grupo. Hoy quiero hablar de su segunda obra de estudio, de título "For my king", de 2000, de la que se pueden extraer temas como este "Up to the sky", del que hoy quiero dejar un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Quartz - Stand Up And Fight

STAND UP AND FIGHT

Otro grupo de esos que fueron abriendo camino en esto del heavy, una de tantísimas bandas británicas que podemos englobar en el famoso movimiento de la NWOBHM. Se trata de Quartz, un grupo formado en 1974 bajo el nombre de "Bandy Legs", con el que funcionan hasta 1977 en que cambian a "Quartz", justo antes de la salida de su primer larga duración llamado "Quartz". En total han editado 3 discos de estudio más un EP entre los años 1977 y 1983, por lo tanto hemos de hablar de una banda de breve duración, como en tantos otros casos durante esta época en Inglaterra, y es que, habiendo tantos grandes en ese momento y lugar,  parecia no haber sitio para todos los nuevos grupos que iban apareciendo. Desde su inicio esta banda, Quartz, estuvo apoyada por nada menos que Black Sabbath, ya que el disco debut fue producido por Tommy Iommi, guitarrista de Black Sabbath y le proporcionó a Quartz la posibilidad de girar con ellos promocionando su primera obra, además, se grabó una canción "Circles", de aparición como cara b en un single, en que colaboraban con Quartz el guitarrista de Queen Brian May a la guitarra, así como Ozzy Osbourne en "Backing Vocals". Desde luego la banda tuvo sus oportunidades, apadrinado así no se puede soñar mejor inicio, aunque la banda no termina de cuajar. En 1980 sacan su segunda obra de estudio "Stand up and fight" del que hoy dejo un tema, y en el que aparece como bonus track el tema "Circles" al que antes me refería. Tras un cambio de vocalista, Quartz saca su tercera y última obra de estudio en 1983, antes de su separación. Sin ser un grupo de los que vayan a marcar época, si que son un buen representante del sonido que se hacía en aquel momento, y además nos dejaron un puñado de buenas canciones como el "Stand up and fight", homónimo al segundo disco, y del que hoy dejo un enlace a youtube.

TWILIGHT OF THE GODS

ültima obra de los alemanes Blind Guardian, un disco al que reconozco que le debo aún unas cuantas escuchas con detenimiento, pero es uno de esos grupos por los que uno puede apostar un poco a ciegas, seguramente unos discos te llenen más que otros, pero al final la calidad está ahí. Ya nos hemos referido a Blind Guardian antes en este blog, y en general poco hay que decir que ya no se sepa de esta extraordinaria banda alemana, tan solo una breve referencia a su largo historial musical. Blind Guardian se formó en 1984 en Alemania, bajo el nombre de Lucifer's Heritage, con el que funcionaron hasta 1986, en que cambian a Blind Guardian. Los miembros fundadores fueron Hansi Kursch y Andre Olbrich, incorporándose al poco tiempo Thomen Stauch y Marcus Siepen. De ellos solo Thomen Stauch ha dejado la banda en 2005. Algunos otros músicos han pasado por el grupo y grandes colaboraciones como la de Kai Hansen, pero en general Blind Guardian han tenido mucha estabilidad en su formación. Influenciados por la literatura, (sobre todo Tolkien y Stephen King) y el cine, sus letras hacen referencia a esos temas y en ocasiones ayudan a la linea argumental de canciones de la banda o incluso de discos enteros. Tienen ya 10 discos de estudio, a cual mejor, lo que les ha creado un nombre entre los grupos internacionales más respetados dentro de nuestro mundillo. Esta décima obra de estudio comienza con el lanzamiento de su primer single, el "Twilight of the gods" del que hoy dejo un enlace a youtube. Típico tema de Blind Guardian, con los elementos esperados del grupo. Seguramente no será el tema más representativo de la historia del grupo, pero merece la pena siempre echar un vistazo a lo nuevo de esta buena banda.

Canciones para una vida - Keldian - F.T.L.

F.T.L.

La tercera y de momento última obra de estos noruegos, "Outbound" de 2013. Ya hemos hablado de Keldian antes, todo un soplo de aire fresco en esto del heavy.  Hacen una musica diferente, basada en melodias de sintetizador que le dan un aire electrónico a su música pero con un toque muy épico y tambien muy espacial en algunos de sus temas y con potentes riffs de guitarra, en un power metal muy limpio. Tienen tres discos de estudio, autoproducidos y esto no debe asustarnos pues es una producción muy cuidada que saca un sonido limpisimo. Formados en 2005, este par de noruegos funcionaron bajo el nombre de Keld hasta 2006 en que cambian su nombre a Keldian. Será en 2007 cuando saquen su primer larga duración,  "Heaven's Gate" . Después han sacado otro par de discos, en 2008 y el que hoy nos ocupa en 2013, siempre autoproducidos, y con dificultades económicas para sacarlos adelante. Esta tercera obra la han editado a través de lo que ellos llaman "Contributors", gente anónima que les ha adelantado el dinero de la producción del disco mediante una especie de "pago por adelantado" de su copia, que luego pueden solicitar a la banda, toda una idea en estos tiempos que corren. El disco desde luego merece la pena, y es que este grupo deberia contar con el apoyo de una discográfica porque calidad les sobra. Escoged cualquier tema que sonará bien. Yo quiero dejar un enlace a youtube de su tema "F.T.L.", uno de los mejores del album, y una buena prueba de lo que son capaces de hacer estos chicos.

Canciones para una vida - Freedom Call - Metal Invasion

METAL INVASION

Como ya hemos dicho anteriormente de estos alemanes Freedom Call se forma en 1998 por el bateria Dan Zimmermann (Gamma Ray) y el comositor, teclista, vocalista y técnico de sonido Chris Bay. Ambos llevaban ya una larga relación musical desde 1988 en que habían coincidido en grupos de versiones como China white o Lanzer a lo largo de la década anterior a la formación de Freedom Call. Deciden darse la oportunidad de crear algo propio justo cuando le bateria Dan entra en Gamma Ray. Freedom Call comienza de esta manera y siempre ha sabido rodearse por grandes músicos, aparte de los mencionados Chris y Dan, por ejemplo Sascha Gerstner en las guitarras hasta su entrada en Helloween, o Ilker Ersin al bajo. Freedom Call comienza a grabar discos de estudio en 1999 sacando hasta la fecha de esta reseña 8 discos en total, a cual mejor. Siempre que hablo de Freedom Call digo lo mismo, es una de esas raras bandas de las que puedo decir que me gusta todo su material, creo que no hay ninguna canción que me desagrade. Su Power metal, muy "happy" en muchas ocasiones te pone las pilas pues su composición es muy cuidada y su producción es simplemente perfecta. Hoy dejo en el blog una canción de su tercera obra de estudio "Eternity", de 2002. Se trata de un gran disco, como todos los de su discografía. A nivel de integrantes, justo antes de la salida de este disco dejó la banda Sascha Gerstner en la Guitarra, para pasar a formar parte de Helloween, y fue sustituido por Cedric Dupont, que solo estaría con Freedom Call dos discos, hasta 2005. El disco es espectacular, como digo, y les sirvió para consolidarse definitivamente como grupo y desterrar las ideas de "grupo efimero" o de colaboraciones que siempre habian circulado con él desde su nacimiento. Casi si escogemos una canción al azar de esta obra acertaremos, yo he querido dejar un enlace a youtube de su "Metal invasion", uno de tantos himnos compuestos por este grupazo.

Canciones para una vida - Gary Moore - Murder In The Skies

MURDER IN THE SKIES

Otro clásico en nuestro blog. Ya hemos hablado de este irlandés anteriormente, y como ya dijimos, hablar de Gary Moore es hablar de los inicios de nuestro género, y me estoy refiriendo a los años 70 cuando comienza en la música con bandas como Skid Row, (no confundir con los Skid Row de los 80), o Thin Lizzy con los que colabora fugazmente en dos breves periodos. Desde el comienzo encamina su carrera en solitario, cosa que no resulta extraña si atendemos a la calidad como vocalista y guitarrista, faceta esta última en que no exageraremos si lo tildamos de virtuoso. 20 discos de estudio entre 1973 y 2008 descubren a un músico prolífico que comienza a flirtear con el Blues desde muy pronto pero que ocupará gran parte de sus esfuerzos compositivos a partir de los 90. Hoy quiero dejar en el blog una canción de su época inicial, de su sexto disco en solitario, de 1983, en concreto el tema "murder in the skies", donde escuchamos un sonido mucho más heavy que el que le dio fama mundial en los 90. En general, la discografía de Gary Moore tiene para mi gusto la mejor época en los 80, desde su "G-Force" del 80 hasta el "after the war" del 89. Merece la pena meterse en esta época del guitarrista si aun no lo has hecho porque te sorprenderán muchos de sus discos, que han sido influencia para guitarristas de primer orden. Canciones para una vida - Nightwish - The Pharaoh Sails To Orion

THE PHARAOH SAILS TO ORION

Otro de esos grupos a los que su fama les precede, dificil pretender descubrirle a nadie este grupo finlandes, se trata de Nightwish. Una de las bandas más importantes de su país a nivel internacional, no en vano se calcula que han vendido más de 7 millones de copias de sus obras a nivel mundial. Nightwish a sido una de esas bandas que ha abierto camino dentro de un estilo, sobre todo a nivel de interpretación con la cantante Tarja Turunen y su estilo operístico tan imitado por otras bandas. Nightwish se forma en 1996, y han editado hasta la fecha de esta reseña 7 discos de estudio, estando el octavo a punto de ver la luz en apenas unas semanas. Resulta una producción musical un tanto escasa para los años que lleva en marcha y las ventas alcanzadas, pero es que esta banda es una máquina de hacer dinero, con continuas ediciones especiales, con versiones solo instrumentales de los discos oficiales, continuos EP's y singles con temas ineditos o remezclados saben vender su producto muy bien. La calidad de la banda es evidente, y su fama merecida en muchos aspectos, y a pesar de no ser mi grupo predilecto, sobre todo en lo que a la forma de cantar se refiere, si que reconozco que tienen discos de muy buena calidad y canciones espectaculares. Hoy quiero dejar en el blog una canción sacada de su época inicial, del disco que más me gusta de la banda, el "Oceanborn" de 1998, su segunda obra de estudio. En ella encontramos grandes temas, no tan arreglados orquestalmente como sucederá más tarde, y en general todos sus temas son buenos haciendolo un disco de esos que uno debe tener original en su estantería, temas como el fantástico "Moondance", o la semiversión de "Snowman" "Sleeping Sun", así como el tema "the pharaoh sails to Orion" del que hoy del que hoy dejo un enlace a youtube sirven bien de ejemplo a lo que digo.
