CHILDREN  OF  THE  NIGHT

Nunca antes, ni tampoco después, los ultra premiados, archi promocionados y fenomenales, que no está reñido, Whitesnake, sonaron más heavys que en su séptimo LP de estudio "1987", de ese mismo año. Hemos de partir de donde provienen musicalmente para matizar este comentario, con esas raices hard, blues, que en los inicios de la banda aun setenteros eran bien patentes, Muy temprano estos británicos que sonoramente hablando situaría cualquiera en el mapa estado unidense, lograron el favor del gran público, y con idas y venidas de nombres importantes en sus filas, y apoyados en la reconocible y magnífica voz de Coverdale como constante universal para la banda, flirtearon con lo que iba tocando en cada monento, y en 1987, tocaba ese hard 'n heavy, que aquí clavaron en un LP antológico, aunque debo matizar que para mí es uno de esos discos especiales en la banda sonora de mi vida, y quizá eso me haga menos objetivo, como suele pasar en estos casos, sin embargo, creo que tomado como LP en si mismo, me parece extraordinario. WE  CAME  TO  ROCK

Que gran obra de los daneses Pretty Maids, este "Future World" de 1987, que ya he traido al blog y del que hoy quiero dejar otro de los temas que lo componen. Estamos hablando de la parte inicial de la carrera de la banda, de su segundo LP que llegaba tras su debut de 1984, hablamos, como ya muchos sabreis, de un heavy metal melódico, que en esa época jugaba amenudo con el hard 'n heavy, con una estética durante esa época un tanto americana, pero con un sonido muy personal, reconocible siempre, y que ponía las bases de una carrera de la banda sólida, longeva y desde luego menos reconocida de lo merecido, a pesar de haber cosechado cierto éxito y tener actualmente buen estatus internacional. Canciones para una vida - Steel Arctus - Flames Of Hades

 

FLAMES  OF  HADES

El segundo trabajo de los griegos "Steel Arctus" es una consecuencia del trabajo bien hecho, tanto desde la perspectiva de la propia banda, que parece dar un paso más adelante en su carrera, encontrando una dinámica que les puede dar buenos rédictos en un futuro próximo, por su buen hacer interpretativo como compositivo, como desde la perspectiva de una escena  como es la griega que está en un momento absolutamente dulce en lo que a producir bandas se refiere, y además en todos los estados de las bandas, es decir tanto los grupos y músicos más veteranos como bandas de reciente formación que ahora dan pasos de confirmación (como es el caso) como a bandas que se siguen creando, y seguirán pues cuando se entra en ua buena dinámica, con grupos que despuntan, muchos otros crecen a su resguardo, el mejor ejemplo de ellos ha sido siempre Suecia. Canciones para una vida - Razor - Distant Thunder

 

DISTANT  THUNDER

El argumento de que 1985 fue uno de esos años excepcionales para el heavy metal no hace sino agrandarse a medida que uno profundiza en dicho año, la cantidad y calidad de las bandas en todas las escenas punteras, (o no tanto) de la época es deslumbrante, y hace que la sensación de interminable labor de investigación te llegue antes o después. La escena internacional estaba sin duda en ebullición, y siempre es un ejercicio de justicia mirar más allá de los grandes nombres, en cualquier época y año, pero como digo, no se que tuvo aquel 1985 que lo hace tan especial. Desde la escena americana, concretamente la elegante canadiense, llegaban a comienzos de los 80 los primeros ecos de la discografía de Razor, una banda que esgrimía un estilo speedico que rozaba en ocasiones el thrash, en ese filo natural de evolución que llevó de uno a otro estilo, desde el inicial heavy metal, ese aumento de velocidad que simplificaba a la larga algunas cosas y desembocaba en los riffs tan característicos del thrash sin más. Pero Razor no se limitó nunca a caer hacia uno de los dos lados, lo suyo era mantenerse en ese filo, lo que les da ese plus, ese punto de riqueza, calidad y mala leche que les debió haber dado mayores réditos. En 1985 editaban su primer LP, "Executioner's song", el primero de los dos LP's que paririan ese año, (esta claro que eran otros tiempos), una obra de la que hoy quiero dejar en el blog uno de sus temas, quizá no el más representativo, por ir a una velocidad menor de lo que acostumbran, "Distant Thunder", pero que siempre me pareció un temazo del que hoy dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Malice - Stellar Masters

 

STELLAR  MASTERS

Un nuevo vistazo a uno de esos discos demasiado olvidados, quizá demasiado desconocido, pero que se me antoja simplemente fundamental para todo aquel que se considere amante del heavy metal sin más, (ni menos), sin adornos, sin excesos, con solo calidad, durante los 43 minutos que dura la obra y a lo largo y ancho de los diez temas que la componen. Nada de concesiones, dando el 100%, la banda estadounidense se sacó de la manga en 1985, (año ya de por sí antológico) una obra al más alto nivel, no solo propio, sino de la escena internacional, vamos, que estamos ante un discazo en mi modesta opinión, y encima se trata de un debut, para rizar el rizo. El caso es que como digo no hay descartes, casi cada tema escogido al azar es un acierto, otro ejemplo este "Stellar Masters" del que hoy dejo un enlace a youtube, heavy metal legendario.

Canciones para una vida - Insomnium - Lilian

 

LILIAN

Nuevo trabajo a la vista para una de esas bandas finlandesas de calidad, de las que tienen esa aparente facilidad para crear melodías que permanecen en tu cabeza, complementadas por la fuerza del death melódico que las enmarca. Se trata de Insomnium y su ya noveno LP de estudio. Un poco con la onda compositiva de los mismos Amorphis o los más nuevos e igualmente buenos Brymir, por mencionar solo un par de ejemplos también finlandeses. El nuevo trabajo se titulará "Anno 1696" y verá la luz el próximo 2023, para finales de febrero, y de ella nos dejan en estos días su primer sencillo, "Lilian", canción de la que dejo hoy un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Joshua - Hold On

 

HOLD  ON

Un nuevo vistazo a la década eterna de los ochenta, hoy para rescatar a una banda de esas que en su periodo de existencia, (en este caso desde 1980 hasta supuestamente nuestros días ya que desde 2012 no editan material nuevo), han sabido exhibir un nutrido grupo de músicos de primera o primerísima línea que siempre se ha reflejado en su sonido, eso sí, con una insistente falta de continuidad que les ha evitado llegar a más altas cotas. Apoyados sobre todo en la figura del guitarrista estadounidense Joshua Peraia, nombres como Ken Tamplin, Rob Rock o Mark Boals han unido en algun momento su nombre al de la banda, además de muchos otros quizá menos nombrados pero no menos importantes. El resultado ha sido un total de 5 LP's, uno de ellos, (este Surrender) reeditado en 1992, más un EP, entre 1980 y 2012, como decía más arriba, escaso bagage para tan largo periplo, enmarcado siempre en un heavy melódico, rozando ese hard 'n heavy sobre todo en la etapa ochentera, apoyado en un trabajo guitarrista muy en línea shred, a lo Yngwie, Impellitteri, etc. Su temática les ha hecho ser considerados dentro del llamado "Christian metal", y hoy quiero dejar en el blog uno de los temas de su primer trabajo en formato LP, "Surrender" de 1985, gran obra, en su conjunto, en un año extraordinario para nuestro sonido, lo que explica quizá que quedasen en un segundo plano a pesar de la innegable calidad. De dicho debut dejo hoy en el blog la canción "Hold On", rápida, "Malmsteeniana" desde su inicio mismo, y de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Quartz - Just Another Man

 

JUST  ANOTHER  MAN

2022 ha sido testigo de la nueva obra de estudio de los británicos "Quartz", aunque reconozco que no he tenido aún el momento de ponerme con el disco, pero siendo un grupo de tradición y larga aunque intermitente trayectoria seguro que antes o después lo haré. Los inicios de su carrera hunden sus raices en el despertar de la NWOBHM, a pesar de ser incluso anteriores en su creación, aunque en parte bajo el nombre de "Bandy Legs". Hablamos de heavy metal de corte clásico, como digo incluidos en el movimiento de la NWOBHM. su tercer LP de estudio y el que marcó su separación en 1983 fue  "Against All Odds" y de dicha obra quiero dejar en el blog hoy una de sus canciones, en concreto "Just Another Man" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Freternia - Dark And The Light

 

DARK  AND  THE  LIGHT

Buena noticia y demostración de intenciones en lo que a continuidad se refiere, la presentación del cuarto LP de los suecos "Freternia" para este 2022. Demostración de continuidad ya que su tercer trabajo editado en 2019 "The Gathering" tras diecisiete años de silencio del grupo parece que fue un sondeo del parecer general sobre su música, y parece ser que sacaron una conclusión que ha sido el plus de motivación necesario para seguir adelante. Vaya por delante la tremenda capacidad dentro del power europeo que siempre me ha parecido que tiene esta banda, pero las buenas criticas de "The Gathering" parecen tener como consecuencia este cuarto LP, "The final stand" de este 2022 que verá la luz de forma oficial este mes de noviembre. El primero de los temas de la obra ya se ha filtrado, "Dark and the light" y de él dejo hoy en el blog un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Cloven Hoof - Heavy Meatl Men Of Steel

 

HEAVY  METAL  MEN  OF  STEEL

Vamos hoy con un curioso caso, el que se dió con los británicos "Cloven Hoof" en su segunda grabación en formato LP que teoricamente es un disco en directo. Se trata de la obra "Fighting Back" de 1986. Que es lo extraño de un disco grabado en vivo, en realidad nada, si seguimos las normas establecidas, pero algo huele diferente en este disco, desde la perspectiva compositiva primero, ya que una obra en vivo es la presentación de material grabado en un show en directo, por lo general de material de obras pasadas, o incluso de temas de una obra que vendrá, generalmente en un futuro muy cercano. Pues este no es el caso, se trata de material nuevo pero que luego no se ha presentado en discos de estudio posteriores salvo en el caso de un par de temas en concreto. Otra de las cosas que no cuadra demasiado es el sonido en si mismo que le hace a uno preguntarse si ha sido una grabación en vivo o una producción adecuada a un sonido para que parezca en directo. Hay sombras a este respecto pero de lo que no hay duda es de la calidad y el potencial que este grupo tenía en los ochenta, otro hijo más de la NWOBHM, y otro que cosechó menos reconocimiento dle merecido. Otra banda más británica procedente de los ecos casi inabarcables de la NWOBHM, así pues otro grupo más de la mágica década de los ochenta, una pieza más en definitiva del mapa global original que puso su granito de arena para el concepto general del heavy metal. Estamos en ese concepto con esta banda que va desde un hard 'n heavy a un heavy metal clásico, y estamos una vez más ante una banda que bajo este nombre editó unicamente una obra de estudio en formato LP, (1984), "Early Warning". Después el grupo, que se había formado en 1982, decidiría cambiar de nombre para seguir empujando un par de años más "Hammer", hasta que en 1987 deciden separarse definitivamente. Hoy, de su primera opción, "Holland" dejo en el blog uno de sus temas, en concreto el que abre su único disco con esta denominación "Shout it out" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Bruce Dickinson - Road To Hell

 

ROAD  TO  HELL

 Otro de los momentos que rayan a mas alto nivel de la carrera de Dickinson en solitario fue "Accident of birth", de 1997, el cuarto LP del cantante de Maiden en ese paréntesis que hizo con la mítica banda antes de terminar volviendo al redil. Estamos ante una obra que es una vuelta a la senda compositiva más esperable para este músico, tras su tercer LP "Skunkworks" que despertaría más antipatías que simpatías, y apoyandose en Adrian Smith para las seis cuerdas, el bueno de Bruce se sacó de la manga un disco muy completo, serio y contundente, con momentos maidenianos y otros no tanto pero desde los riffs más duros y machacones casi thrashy, hasta los instantes más intimos y melódicos el disco ofrece un viaje sonoro muy completo que merece la pena en su conjunto. Esta banda representa muy bien lo que era en los ochenta el concepto de banda, mira muy hacia lo elemental, hacia lo que muchos grupos hacían al inicio de sus carreras, el concepto de unos amigos que unian su pasión por la música para crear un objetivo común, muy para ellos mismos, pasando por encima de cotas más lejanas, el ahora y poco más, son los germanos Sabre, aunque quizá habría que otorgarles la nacionalidad estadounidense pues la historia tras esta banda es al menos curiosa, se trata de cuatro soldados que sirviendo a su ejercito en alemania forman esta banda en 1983 sacando un único LP en 1985, "Keepers of the sword" antes de dejarlo en 1986. Se trata de un heavy metal clásico, de la vieja escuela y como decía más arriba del todo honesto, más allá de la producción mejorable es simplemente un grupo de colegas haciendo buena música. Es una pena que no siguieran adelante pues merece la pena este único trabajo y prometía sobre todo que algo grande podía venir de ellos, buen ejemplo es el tema que da nombre a la obra, "Keepers of the sword" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

WE  ROCK  THE  NATION

Una vez más el concepto tantas veces visto de banda ochentera en clave de heavy metal que apenas despegó antes de desaparecer casi en el anonimato, y de nuevo una banda que debería haber cosechado mejores resultados puesto que por potencial tenían las herramientas para haberlo logrado. Restless fue una banda alemana que desarrollo su corta carrera entre los años 1982 y 1985, editando dos LP's de estudio en 1984 y 1985. Mas allá de buscarles un parecido, que en este caso una vez más es muy tentador mencionar a sus compatriotas Accept, el tema es que el sonido es muy hijo de su época, y para los que disfrutamos de ese tipo de sonido auténtico y primigenio esta banda ofrece muy buenos momentos, por ejemplo el que da nombre a su segundo LP "Rock the nation" de 1985, canción de la que hoy dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - 220 Volt - Secrey Dance (Ximania)

 

SECRET  DANCE  (XIMANIA)

De vuelta a los suecos 220 Volt para retomar su discografía en su tercera tentativa, "Mind over muscle" de 1985, en el que demostraban estar en un magnífico momento, practicando también un heavy metal de calidad, de orientación más malódica pero igualmente poderoso. Fue el penúltimo LP de la banda, y el último antes de su giro hacia el hard rock puro y duro, antes de su intento de conquista de cotas más internacionales y de tratar de conquistar el mercado americano, algo que a la larga els condicionó y marco su destino hacia un largo parón, pero jamás recuperarían ese prometedor sonido que a la altura de esta obra practicaban de manera magistral. De esta obra se pueden destacar muchos momentos, hoy me voy a decantar por ese toque un pelín porgresivillo si se quiere que nos deja el tema "Secret Dance (Ximania)", canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.
