KINGS  AND  QUEENS

 Nueva banda sueca enclavada en el género power metal de escuela claramente europea que desembarca con su primer LP "Lost Between dimensions"editado de forma oficial el pasado 5 de septiembre. Se trata de otro de esos grupos que parece salir de ninguna parte y así, si miramos la procedencia de los miembros que la componen vemos que algunos de sus miembros no parecen tener un currículum reconocible aunque el cantante Markus S. Olkerud ha mostrado ya su buen hacer en bandas suecas tales como Rocke Rollas o Starblind. Sea como fuere son todos nombre bastante desconocidos en general pero que han mostrado un cierto potencial en los trabajos publicados hasta la fecha, teniendo que tener en cuenta que se trata en general de carreras incipientes. Con un estilo como decía al inicio dentro del power europeo, muy de la escuela sueca que ellos mismos denominan como "Interdimensional symphonic power metal", la temática predilecta de la banda parece versar sobre ciencia ficción, y puede apreciarse un ligero toque progresivo con en general una buena composición que hace de la obra un disco agradable a la escucha en su conjunto, más teniendo en cuenta que es su debut. Como ejemplo quiero hoy dejar en el blog un tema de este, hasta la fecha de esta reseña, su único LP, en concreto la canción "Kings and queens" que enseña bien el potencial de este grupo que veremos hasta donde llega.

Canciones para una vida - Thin Lizzy - Killer On The Loose

KILLER  ON  THE  LOOSE

De nuevo quiero hacer referencia a una banda importante de finales de los 70 y comienzos de los 80 para lo que es nuestra escena musical, se trata de los irlandeses Thin Lizzy, hogar musical de Phil Lynott (voz y bajo así como teclados) y durante parte de la carrera de la banda con Gary Moore (un par de años), a la guitarra, quien justamente a partir de este disco buscaría su camino alejado de la banda, este es por tanto el primer LP de Thin Lizzy sin Moore en sus filas tras su entrada, una gran perdida que sin duda tuvo que tener una influencia negativa por el peso de semejante músico que ha tenido suficiente demostración posterior en la escena internacional, aunque claro, la banda se creo y desarrollo gran parte de su carrera sin su figura, el estilo era ya muy definido como para notar la influencia compositiva de Moore, un peso, el compositivo, que siempre recayó sobre Lynott. "Chinatown" es el décimo disco de estudio de Thin Lizzy, que reclutaría a Snowy White para sustituir al enorme Gary Moore en esta obra, según dice la leyenda el guitarrista salió tratando de huir de la espiral de drogas y alcohol en que había caído Lynott y los suyos y terminaría siendo preludio de la separación definitiva de la banda tan solo un par de años después. En lo musical nos encontramos ante una obra no demasiado bien parada entre la crítica general, sin embargo creo que es uno de sus discos más potentes , más heavys, separado un poco de los anteriores discos del grupo en ese sentido, pero sea como sea se trata de un disco que no merece tan mala fama, ni mucho menos, y buen ejemplo son varias de sus canciones, como este "Killer on the loose" del que hoy quiero dejar un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Europica - Powder Dry

POWDER  DRY

 Europica es una banda de esas que te encuentras por ahí, casi sin querer y que parece no haber salido de ninguna parte, por la casi nula promoción y por el desconocimiento casi general de miembros y bandas a las que han ido perteneciendo así como la procedencia de una escena, la húngara, que tampoco es que sea la más renombrada, eso sí, todo ello choca frontalmente con la propuesta musical tan acertada que usa la banda, con la inclusión a modo de colaboración de grandes artistas internacionales, de renombre mundial tales como Fabio Lione, Ralf Scheepers, Blaze Bayley, o Tim Ripper Owens por ejemplo, a lo que hay que unir una calidad extraordinaria incluida la cuestión técnica de la grabación y producción de la obra. Si tenemos en cuenta que todo ello se ha producido sin la mediación de discográfica alguna nos encontramos con una serie de premisas que al menos deben despertar nuestra curiosidad que será satisfecha sin duda para bien. Europica se forma recientemente y ha editado tan solo este álbum "Part One" el 16 de julio de este 2017. Poca o nula información encontraremos en la red sobre datos concretos de la banda más allá del nombre de los integrantes, seis miembros con dos guitarristas, un batería, teclista bajo e incluso un par de artistas que dan un toque de cello y flauta, amén de un cantante más los citados vocalistas de renombre invitados. Canciones para una vida - Excelsis - Dragonslayer

DRAGONSLAYER

Segunda obra de los suizos Excelsis, una banda de la que ya he hablado en el blog y a la que hoy vuelvo en la obra que me hizo descubrirles hace ya muchos años, "Kurt of Koppigen" de 1998. Para la ocasión la banda dio un paso más adelante respecto a su buen debut "Anduin the river", un disco de 1997 en el que ya demostraron un enorme potencial y en cierto modo ir abriendo un camino en la época hacia el tan extendido actual sonido folk que ellos decantaron hacia una power de vocación aspera, un tanto en la onda vocal de Grave Digger pero con muchos más elementos folk. Desde luego desde sus inicios como banda Excelsis demostró una gran personalidad que hizo de su estilo algo muy reconocible y posiblemente hasta cierto punto influjo para otras bandas a pesar de no llegar nunca a haber sido muy conocidos internacionalmente. De cualquier forma es altamente recomendable su discografía así como esta obra en concreto a la que hoy quiero hacer referencia,"Kurt of Koppigen", y a una de las canciones que más me gustan de dicha obra, "Dragonslayer", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Stratovarius - S.O.S.

S.O.S.

Poca presentación necesita esta banda finlandesa, una de las primeras impulsoras del sonido finlandés power a nivel internacional y que ayudaría a esa mega explosión de grupos de ese pequeño país europeo que es sin embargo un gigante a nivel sonoro. Hoy quiero traer un tema del disco "Destiny", una obra en la que la banda se encontraba en uno de sus momentos más exitosos, tras ya en ese momento una carrera llena de éxitos, con obras como "Episode" o "Visions" llegaba este "Destiny" de 1998, un disco en el que la banda tenía la misión de mantener las expectativas creadas anteriormente siendo como digo un referente en la escena power internacional. Tras una serie de giras a nivel mundial editan este disco con muy buena acogida entre publico y medios especializados, que seria otro gran éxito de ventas y terminaría por hacer de Stratovarius un grupo indispensable en cualquier evento metálico que se preciase. Es un disco además en el que la banda muestra signos evolutivos en su sonido, más hacia un estilo un pelo más sinfónico, algo que explotarían más adelante quizá en exceso. De esta obra se puede indudablemente destacar un montón de temas lo que sin duda habla siempre de una obra como completa, y este es un caso más, un disco de esos que hay que tener, sobre todo si lo tuyo es el power de corte europeo. Hoy quiero destacar el single "S.O.S.", tema absolutamente "made in stratovarius", uno de sus singles de manual y que no podía faltar en un repaso de las canciones para una vida, un tema del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Crom - Shields Of Gold

SHIELDS  OF  GOLD

Finalmente ya está aquí la esperadísima, (para mí), tercera obra del genial Walter "Crom" Grosse con su banda de un solo miembro "Crom". Este tercer disco "When northmen die" saldrá a la venta de forma oficial este próximo 1 de Diciembre y para la ocasión ha complementado la formación de la banda con Seraph a la batería (de la banda "Dark Fortress" de la que ya he hablado en el blog), y tambien de la misma banda el cantante Paymon colaborará en un par de temas así como en los coros. La edición normal incluirá 12 temas y la edición especial tres bonus de veriones de Old man's child, Kiss y A-Ha. Por lo que se puede escuchar en su tema adelanto, "Shields of gold" nos encontramos ante un tema que bien podría haber sido incluido en su primer LP, el alucinante "Vengeance", de 2008, esperemos que el resto de canciones sigan por ese sendero y nos encontraremos ante una de las obras de este 2017. Canciones para una vida - Angel Witch - Angel Witch

ANGEL  WITCH

 Hay discos que se hacen importantes por los más diversos motivos, unos por la composición en si misma, pero otros además llevan añadida una carga de influencia o impulso para una movimiento concreto o movimientos musicales y bandas posteriores, y en este apartado podríamos incluir a este "Angel Witch" de los propios Angel Witch. Según muchas opiniones estos británicos pueden ser considerados como los impulsores del sonido de la NWOBHM, algo que a título personal me parece una apreciación muy osada, ya que no creo que ese irrepetible movimiento que trascendió las fronteras del Reino Unido pueda atribuirse a una sola banda que influyó a las demás, sino que más bien siempre he pensado que fue fruto de un caldo de cultivo especial que desembocó en esa explosión de bandas a comienzos de los 80 que encabezaron grandes nombres pero que tenían detrás a un gran ejercito de bandas anónimas que incluso hoy en día sigo descubriendo. Sea como fuere, Angel Witch si que nació en el momento indicado para ser cabeza de lanza en ese movimiento de la NWOBHM, y su influencia en bandas posteriores y hermanas así como la calidad son algo simplemente innegable. Hoy quiero pues volver al sonido de ese grupo, y en concreto al de su debut, "Angel witch" de 1980, una de sus obras más celebradas y del que hoy extraigo otro de sus temas clásicos, "Angel witch", del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Dark Star - Lady Of Mars

LADY  OF  MARS

De nuevo un paseo por los inicios de nuestro sonido para rescatar a otra de esas bandas que se quedó en el camino y que además se puede sacar del eterno movimiento de la NWOBHM. Se trata de los británicos Dark Star, un grupo que se mantuvo una década en la escena en activo, periodo durante el que editaron dos LP's y un EP de un heavy metal incipiente y del todo interesante, como decía más arriba enclavado dentro del sonido de la NWOBHM, con muchos de sus clichés, con algún que otro guiño al sonido hard-heavy, un tanto Rainbow o Thin Lizzy si se quiere, de hecho al separarse la banda la mayoría de los miembros se enrolaron en un proyecto enfocado al blues. Dark Star comienza su andadura en 1978 bajo el nombre de "Berlin" pero a comienzos de los 80 lo cambian a "Dark Star" con el que funcionarían el resto de su carrera. Hoy me quiero referir a su material primero y quiero dejar en el blog una canción extraída de su EP "Lady of Mars" de 1980, en concreto el que da nombre al EP, "Lady of Mars" que después se incluiría también en su primer larga duración "Dark Star" de 1981, una canción este "Lady of mars" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Beast In Black - Beast In Black

BEAST  IN  BLACK

Segundo adelanto de la banda de nueva formación "Beast in Black" con Anton Kabanen ex de Battle Beast a los mandos, un grupo del que he hablado hace poco en el blog. No repetiré todo lo dicho en la anterior entrada referente a su primer adelanto de la inminente obra "Berserker", tan solo traigo hoy el segundo single a modo de confirmación de lo que uno se puede esperar de esta obra, siempre de la mano de la calidad y que con el apoyo promocional de nuclear blast detrás será sin duda uno de los discos importantes a nivel de ventas de 2017. Es evidente la calidad como digo de este genial guitarrista finlandés que parece destinado en el futuro a ser otro "rey Midas" tipo Kai Hansen o Tobias Sammet que transformen en oro todo asunto musical que toquen, veremos. De momento dejo hoy en el blog un enlace a su clip oficial de este "Beast in black" homónimo al nombre de la banda, esperemos que sea un buen termómetro de la temperatura musical que nos espera en la obra por salir.

Canciones para una vida - Gloryhammer - Wizards

WIZARDS

Muchas veces podemos intuir, además de por otros muchos motivos, la grandeza de una banda o de un músico por la grandeza de los "descartes" musicales que hacen en una obra, esos temas que supuestamente se meten como bonus track después, también en ocasiones para vender más discos a los fans que siguen comprando discos y que deciden pagar un poco más cara una edición especial por ese tipo de cosas. Pues bien, Christopher Bowes, la mente tras Gloryhammer, (y Alestorm), se ha marcado en su debut con esta banda uno de esos "descartes" que ya quisieran muchas bandas tener como tema fuerte en una obra, y es que este disco sigue resultandome increible, el mejor de sus dos obras hasta la fecha de esta reseña, y este "Wizards" bien merece sin duda pagar un par de Euros más por la edición que la incluya, un tema corto pero directo y del que hoy dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Blue Oyster Cult - Heavy Metal The Black And Silver

HEAVY  METAL  THE  BLACK  AND  SILVER

 Siempre ha habido bandas en la escena internacional de muchos tipos, por ejemplo algunas que no evolucionan mucho musicalmente permaneciendo siempre fieles a un sonido original, u otras que evolucionan su sonido, en ocasiones cambiando tanto su estilo original que apenas se puede reconocer su sonido original. El caso de la banda que hoy nos ocupa, Blue Oyster Cult, es uno de estos últimos, incluso uno de esos casos extremos en el que la banda atraviesa por varios o muchos estilos diferentes a lo largo de su vida. Estos neoyorquinos se formaron a finales de los 60 con una vocación al hard rock psicodélico que tanto se estilaba en esos años, un estilo que fue evolucionando hacia el hard rock progresivo, el heavy metal o el rock psicodélico posterior. evidentemente hoy quiero fijar mi atención sobre su época más cercana a una especie de Hard heavy, que coincidió en el tiempo con los inicios de la década de los 80, y que se alargó durante un par de obras, "Cultosaurus erectus" de 1980 y "Fire of the unknown origin" de 1981, del que hoy quiero destacar un tema en el blog. Esta obra, "Fire of the unknown origin" es reconocida en general como un disco maduro en lo compositivo y un punto de inflexión en su propuesta sonora que a partir de esta obra caminaría hacia una propuesta más suave.
