KISS  OF  DEATH

Si la década de los ochenta para esta banda fue la de la furia speedica que les hizo encontrar su senda progresivamente en lo que a temátca compositiva se refiere, la de los noventa fue la del mantenimeinto del heavy metal estandar que en tan pocos bastiones encontró defensa en esos complicados años, uno de dichos bastiones fueron estos chicos. Además, se termina de dar forma al sello que más se pudo reconocer de la banda en lo sonoro, con la melodía siempre de la mano de la contundencia como estandarte junto con las historias corsarias, siendo esta década testigo de algunos de los últimos grandes LP's de la banda. Hoy quiero dejar en el blog otro tema de esa época, perteneciente al undécimo LP de estudio, "The Rivalry", de 1998, concretamente "Kiss of death", canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Stratovarius - Destiny

 

DESTINY

A esas alturas de la carrera musical de los finlandeses Stratovarius, (finales de los 90), la banda tenía un estatus, un nivel de influencia y un tiron de ventas como pocas otras bandas en clave de europower tenían a nivel planetario, y es que la verdad es que venían de hacer las cosas muy bien y además de aprovechar el hecho de encabezar ese movimiento en una importante escena como la de su país siendo referentes allí y no solo. Siempre destacaron por saber aprovechar muy bien sus recursos y sin ser la mejor banda en cada aspecto por separado, la cohesión de cada elemento en la amalgama llamada Stratovarius les hizo llegar a casi cada rincon del planeta metálico. Para 1998 editaban ya su séptimo LP de estudio, "Destiny" que traía a cuestas la dificultad de ser el continuador de las obras "Episode" de 1996 y "Visions" del 97, que cumplió con creces al menos el apartado de ventas, como digo se trataba de ese momento de la banda en el que todo lo que oliese a Stratovarius era muy cotizado. Canciones para una vida - Afterworld - To The Afterworld

 

TO  THE  AFTERWORLD

Con la explosión de bandas que aparecieron en el planeta al calor del power metal desde mediados de los 90, particularmente centrandonos en la vertiente europea de dicho surgimiento, es evidente que se saturó la escena internacional, y muchos grupos en las diversas escenas de cada país quedaron relegados a un papel testimonial, más allá de las aptitudes que poseyesen, hoy me quiero referir a una banda que cumple esas premisas, los finlandeses "Afterworld" quienes desarrollaron una corta carrera entre 1993 y 2000, editando un par de obras de estudio, como digo enmarcadas en el sonido euro power, que por cierto desde 2015 han supuestamente vuleto a poner en marcha su proyecto aunque de momento sin noticias compositivas nuevas. Hablamos de una banda en la que figura algún nombre de la escena clásiquísima finlandesa, (Riff Raff), y donde merodea la mano productiva de Tolkki. Hablamos de calidad, pero por supuesto en ese momento eclipsada por los grandes nombres del momento que ejercían de reyes Midas sobre otros proyectos que surgían por doquier, ya el oyente se volvia más exigente o cómodo y en no pocas ocasiones iba a los grandes nombres o a las figuras conocidas en sus proyectos, algo que por otra parte no ha dejado nunca de pasar lo que es una pena tanto para las bandas con menos recursos o renombre como para la riqueza de bandas que un metalhead medio puede gestionar si no se lo curra un poco investigando. El caso es que "Afterworld" sorprenderá gratamente a más de un consumidor de power metal noventero, y su primer album "Dark side of mind", de 1999, es la excusa hoy para dejar un tema en el blog, concretamente "To the afterworld" del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Heavy Load - Singing Swords

 

SINGING  SWORDS

Además de la utilidad de caracter digamos "académico" de rebuscar en las raices de nuestro sonido, está el gustazo puramente musical de disfrutar de las ideas primigénias que muchas bandas, injustamente olvidadas llevaban a la práctica, abriendo sendas luego muy transitadas, en lo que fue el nacimiento del heavy metal original. Muchas escenas, presididas por supuesto por la británica o la americana, pero sin dejar de lado otras, que ya en aquellos años eran enormemente productivas, como por ejemplo la sueca que hoy nos ocupa, y en aquellos años, en la citada escena, bandas como Heavy load, ponían su granito de arena, abrian horizontes épicos, que no llegaban siempre a todos los oidos que deberían, y de haberlo hecho así, otro gallo les hubiera cantado, sin duda, ya que calidad, energía, originalidad, e ilusión tenían para haber alcanzado mayores cotas de popularidad. Hoy traigo otro enorme ejemplo de su buen hacer, su tercer LP de estudio, "Stronger than evil" de 1983, ya el tercero en el 83, eso da otro punto claro de espíritu pionero. De este gran disco dejo hoy como ejemplo su tema "Singing Swords", muchos de sus rasgos se muestran aquí, una canción de la que dejo hoy un enlace a youtube. Merece siempre la pena meter la nariz en la historia, siempre ayuda a entenderlo todo desde una perspectiva más completa, y justa, también en la música.

Canciones para una vida - Freternia - The Darkside

 

THE  DARKSIDE 

Volvamos la vista atrás, a la década de los 2000, a sus inicios, a la escena sueca y al marco del power, tendremos grandes posibilidades de esncontrar algo bueno con esa triangulación, y en este caso de Freternia sin duda así es, pues se trata de una banda que ha demostrado con creces su potencial a pesar de que juzgar su carrera pueda resultar algo injusto si atendemos a la escasa producción de obras en relación a su tiempo de actividad, ( 3 LP¡s en más de 20 años), pero es que no todo son facilidades precisamente sin no cuentas con el favor del gran público, cosa que así es en este caso, y es aún más de justicia resaltar el tesón y la fidelidad a tus ideas a pesar de ello, y Freternia es justamente eso. "A nightmare story" es su segundo LP, grabado en 2002, que hacía presagiar un futuro inmediato mucho más brillante para la banda, disco completo, variado y dentro del género aunque sin salirse de los clichés con suficiente personalidad para mostrar su propio sello personal, obra recomendable de una banda recomendable, de la que hoy dejo en el blog la canción "The darkside" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Battlelore - Isenmouthe

 

ISENMOUTHE

Como ya es conocido, 2022 ha sido el año de vuelta a la vida compositiva de los finlandeses "Battlelore" quienes han dado continuidad en todos los sentidos a su discografía a través de su séptimo LP de estudio "The return of the shadow", una obra que muestra esa sensación de continuar en dodnde lo habían dejado allá por 2011, con lo que eso significa para los argumentos tanto a favor como en contra de la banda, es decir que nadie creo que vaya a cambiar su opinión al respecto del sonido o la concepcion compositiva de la banda. En una edición especial el grupo ha editado una versión de la obra con un segundo disco en el que han introducido tres bonus, entre los que se encuentra el tema que dejo en el blog hoy, "Isenmouthe", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

VIOLENT  SHADOWS

Otro adelanto más de la nueva obra de los alemanes Blind Guardian que siguen dando motivos de alegría para sus fans por ese cierto toque al sonido clásico de la banda que se refleja también en este "Violent Shadows" que el grupo presentó en su momento en vivo, en 2020 en el Wacken World Wide, una cuestión para nada dejada al azar, pues además de servirle al grupo para sondear la aceptación del sonido propuesto para la nueva obra, aprovecharon para grabar imágenes que ahora utilizan en el videoclip, del que dejo un enlace a youtube hoy.

Canciones para una vida - Torch - Beyond

 

BEYOND

De nuevo los suecos "Torch" dan señales de continuidad de una carrera larga, que hunde sus raices en los inicios de la década de los ochenta cuando comenzaron su andadura como banda, y que se vio durante mucho tiempo, como a otras muchas bandas les sucedió, en un paréntesis desde 1986, hasta que retoman su actividad en 2003. Ya en 2009 parece que arrancan desde el punto de vista compositivo esta segunda etapa que tendría que esperar de nuevo más de una década para ver publicado un nuevo LP en 2020. Este 2022 es testigo de un paso más en su carrera azarosa cuanto menos, a traves de un LP en vivo. Es una gran escusa para repasar algo más de su material pasado, en este caso centrándome en una de las canciones de su debut en forma de EP, "Fire Raiser!!" de 1982, donde mostraban el potencial de heavy metal de la old school, en ese instante muy acorde a lo que se hacía, y de dicho debut dejo hoy el tema "Beyond" del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

HERALD  OF  AEGIR

Brymir es para mí sin duda una de las mejores bandas en su sonido, una de las más finas desarrollando ese death melódico, y han ido llegando de forma progresiva a este punto actual de incontestable calidad. Desde su formación en 2006 han ido conformando esa personalidad propia que en este 2022 ve como fruto su cuarto LP de estudio "Voices in the sky" que verá la luz de forma oficial en este inminente mes de agosto, y de la que en estos días deajn su segundo adelanto, "Herald of Aegir" que no hace sino aumentar las ganas de escuchar el nuevo LP en su conjunto, una canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Rebellion - Thankless Child

 

THANKLESS  CHILD

Durante mucho tiempo, desde su formación tras la escisión de parte de la banda Grave Digger a comienzos de los 2000, hasta el final de la trilogía vikinga, los alemanes han formado parte de esas bandas a las que incondicionalmente les otorgaba mi confianza casi a ciegas, lo que por aquel entonces hacían me resultaba perfecto obra tras obra. Desde ese momento en adelante, la verdad es que me ha costado mucho más, siempre con esa sensación de que potencialmente me deberían llenar sus obras, pero siempre echando algo de menos que no termino de saber que es, y lo peor para mí es que esa sensación parece agudizarse a medida que avanza su carrera, quizá seré yo, no se. El caso es que llevaba mucho tiempo queriendo traer al blog una de las canciones de su octavo LP de estudio que no es sino una segunda visita al universo de Shakespeare que ya centro el hilo argumental lírico de su magnifico debut de 2002. Este octavo album, "A tragedy in steel part II Shakespeare's King Lear", de 2018, como digo se me hace un tanto extraño, que no malo, la banda ha demostrado mucho ya su calidad y seriedad, pero a mi, repito, me cuesta mucho su último sonido editado, demasiado espeso quizá, y hoy quiero dejar en el blog de este disco citado una de las canciones que más me han logrado llegar de la obra, "Thankless child" un tanto extraña también, con una dinámica pesada, lenta pero al tiempo es de las que permanecen ahí tras su escucha, una canción de la que hoy dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Grailknights - Crimson Shades Of Glory

 

CRIMSON  SHADES  OF  GLORY

De las ya muchas bandas que han decidido tomar un camino escénico y compositivo más digamos desenfadado, sin duda alguna los alemanes "Grailknights" son uno de mis favoritos como todo lector asiduo de este blog ya habrá deducido. La calidad de la banda se me antoja indiscutible, y la trayectoria del grupo, con más de dos décadas de actividad y seis LP's a los que acompañan otros dos EP's resulta un aval más que suficiente como para que más parte del gran publico les premiase con un reconocimiento bien merecido. La riqueza compositiva, que va desde el death melódico sobre todo de sus iniicos hasta el toque más power del la parte más nueva de su discografía es igualmente innegable, así que creo que sus virtudes deberían dar cobijo a un nutrido grupo de metalheads. Canciones para una vida - Holy Blood - By Fire And Sword

Vamos hoy con un poquito de death melódico de corte folk y de la escuela nordica, en este caso de origen ucraniano, por lo que la parte folk tiene un claro sonido ruso digamos, un tanto al estilo Arkona. La banda se llama "Holy Blood" y llevan en activo ya más de dos décadas, desde 1999, aunque su repercusión inicial dificilmente podría haber alcanzado cotas internacionales ya que sus primeros 5 albumes están cantados en su lengua materna, algo dificil de vender al gran público. Es desde 2017 desde el año en que deciden intentar la conquista del mercado internacional cambiando la lengua de su música al ingles, editando ese mismo año su primer material, "Glory to the heroes" en este caso en formato EP, al que seguiría en 2019 un nuevo LP, "Voice of blood". En general lo dicho, death melódico, con tintes a lo Arkona, y un toque folk muy ruso, con coros contundentes buscando una épica un tanto tosca pero efectiva. De su primer material en inglés, el citado EP "Glory to the heroes" de 2017, quiero hoy dejar en el blog una de sus canciones, "By fire and sword", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Nordic Union - This Means War

 

THIS  MEANS  WAR

El segundo single de la tercera obra de Nordic Union ya está aquí, "This Means War", un ejemplo casi perfecto de lo que cabe esperar de esta dupla nórdica de músicos, el danés Ronnie Atkins a la voz, (Pretty Maids), y el sueco Erik Martensson, (de Eclipse), multiinstrumentista incluyendo la voz, en un hard heavy metal melódico, que como digo no se aleja en absoluto de los que ambos músicos están acostumbrados a hacer por separado y de lo que ya han hecho juntos con anterioridad. En agosto está prevista la salida de la obra y si lo tuyo es este tipo de sonido estás de enhorabuena por lo que se puede escuchar de momento de la obra. Canciones para una vida - Spellblast - Gobling's Song

 

GOBLING'S  SONG

La escuela italiana es también una de esas canteras en las que muchas bandas permanecen siempre en un segundo plano, como en una segunda división, llegando a tener una cirta repercusión pero al tiempo dandose por hecho que no saltarán nunca a la primera línea de grupos de la escena internacional, sin embargo, no en pocas ocasiones ese tipo de bandas ofrecen una calidad mucho más que aceptable y su propuesta resulta ser muy interesante, concretamente con los italianos y hablando de la primera década de los 2000, ese power, con tintes épico folk un tanto herederos de los inevitables Rhapsody. En semejante marco encontramos a "Spellblast", quienes en 1999 comnzaron su andadura que continúa hasta la actualidad, con una producción discográfica de cuatro LP's en estos años, lo cual se antoja un tanto escaso, y creo que últimamente, en su último LP han seguido buscando un hueco en la escena internacional, aunque su giro, sobre todo conceptual no se si ha sido un acierto, pero esa será otra historia. El caso es que su debut, "Horns of silence"  en 2007,descubrió a una ilusionada banda, en ese concepto épico fantástico folkie que considero más natural en ellos, con temas tan interesantes como este "Goblins song" de la que dejo hoy un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Sons Of Crom - Master Of Shadows

 

MASTER  OF  SHADOWS

La banda internacional nórdica (sueco finlandesa) "Sons Of Crom" compuesta tan solo por dos miembros multiinstrumentistas, que basan su sonido en un atmósferico heavy doom, sin caer en el death en lo vocal pero con un innegable y oscuro influjo de Bathory, sobre todo en sus inicios, que hablando de una discografía de tan solo dos LP's es como decir de gran parte de su carrera que comenzó allá por 2014 y ha visto un primer LP en ese mismo año seguido por un segundo en 2017. Volviendo la vabeza de nuevo a su debut quiero hoy dejar en el blog otra de las composiciones que lo integran, "Master of shadows", uno de esos guiños a Bathory a los que me refería, con todos los ingredientes, atmósféricos, esa sensación de pesada melancolía, con tintes épicos y de medio tiempo, canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.
