Uno de los puntos fuertes de los germanos Helloween, además de la aparente recuperación de los golpes que suelen acabar con la mayoría de bandas como la salida de miembros clave, es la de crear singles incontestables, temas se fácil asimilación, de enorme potencial de venta, de capacidad para ser coreadas en vivo, punto clave para su éxito global. Attack - Return Of The Evil

MISSING  YOU 

Vuelta a la escena germana de mitad de los ochenta para rescatar una vez más a la menospreciada banda Attack, otro de esos grupos que no han alcanzado en absoluto el reconocimiento merecido, y su carrera quizá por ello quedo diluida a una fracción de lo que podría haber llegado a ser. Siempre esgrimiendo un heavy metal clasicote, con momentos proto power cuando aún el estilo apenas despuntaba. En 1985 el grupo editaba su segundo LP, un disco que era más sólido en todo que su debut, el grupo de manera natural crecía mostrando ese potencial absoluto hacia algo grande. El segundo LP llevaba por título "return of the evil" y de él dejo hoy el tema "Missing You", un tema casi maideniano en lo guitarristico, y del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Stormwitch - Heart Of Ice

HEART  OF  ICE 

Los germanos Stormwitch son otro de esos grupos al que se puede unir a los pioneros de esto del heavy metal en su escena natal, un nombre siempre en un segundo plano respecto a otros más reconocidos pero que igualmente hicieron méritos para al menos cosechar un mayor reconocimiento. Formados como Stormwich en 1981 procedían ya de las cenizas de la banda Lemon Sylvan. Siempre se inclinaron un un heavy metal que dejaba asomar un tipo de composición proto power antes de que ese movimiento explotase. Siempre melódicos y veloces, en 1989 publicaban su quinto album de estudio "Eye of the storm", último con la formación inicial del grupo siendo un disco acusado de ser el menos heavy de la banda, pero que igualmente atesora grandes momentos del grupo. Grave Digger - Saints Of The Broken Souls

 

SAINTS  OF  THE  BROKEN  SOULS 

Nada menos que 1980 el año de formación de esta banda alemana clásica, Grave Digger, un grupo que no ha parado de componer música desde sus inicios, siempre fieles a su estilo, algo que es fuente de elogios y críticas a partes iguales entre las alabanzas por su inquebrantable personalidad propia y los reproches a su predecibilidad, una historia vieja como la música en sí. En 2012 la banda publicaba su décimo cuarto LP de estudio "Clash of the gods", en esta ocasión con la antigua Grecia como excusa compositiva, y de esta obra quiero hoy dejar en el blog uno de sus bonus track, "Saints of the broken souls" del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Riot - Cry For The Dying

CRY  FOR  THE  DYING 

"Inishmore" es el titulo del décimo LP de estudio de la banda estadounidense Riot, una de las grandes bandas primigenias de heavy metal, uno de los fundamentales grupos que alimentó la inspiración para tantas bandas en los inicios de nuestro sonido, con un nombre en mayúsculas detras como era el de Mark Reale que tristemente muriese en 2012. En 1998 la banda publicaba esta album, ( en 1997 para Japón), un disco que innovaba en el sonido de la banda, con un cierto espíritu folk, celta, que quizá dejaría un tanto frios a los fans de toda la vida, pero que mostraba una versatilidad grande y la calidad inherente al grupo. Antioch - Iron Serpent

IRON  SERPENT 

Los canadienses Antioch son otro de esos grupos que se han apuntado a la nueva ola del heavy metal a nivel internacional, ese heavy metal de clarísimo regusto clásico, de la vieja escuela, pero hecho en este siglo, de configuración compositiva que bien podría caber en 1984 pero que tecnicamente se aprovecha de las virtudes tecnológicas de los tiempos que corren a nivel de producción. Antioch es una de esas primeras bandas que se apuntaron a esta nueva (vieja) corriente. Formados en 2013, a fecha de esta reseña tienen publicados cinco LP's de estudio (más tres EP's). El primero de sus LP's data de 2015 "Antioch II First Stryke", y de él dejo hoy en el blog su canción "Iron serpent" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Praying Mantis - Forever In Time

FOREVER  IN  TIME 

La banda para hoy es otro de esos grupos clásicos, británicos, pero que han tenido una carrera, sobre todo al principio un poco desordenada, y es una pena que parasen basicamente de publicar música toda su primera década de actividad, exceptuando su debut de 1981 "Time tell no lies", tras eso, como digo, hasta 1991 no publicarían una continuación al citado debut, adquiriendo desde entonces una mayor continuidad al componer obras, si bien, tomandose su tiempo entre una y otra, así, en esta banda formada a finales de los 70, encontramos una discografía de "tan solo" doce LP's de estudio, algo escasa para tantos años en activo. Por otra parte, es una banda de las que han escogido la calidad, siempre con ese tufillo frogresivo, ese aire personal y melódico aunque se englobase a la banda en un principio en la NWOBHM. Sea como sea siempre hay algo que "rascar" de este grupo, merece la pena dedicarle algo de atención a su discografía, hoy quiero dejar en el blog una de las canciones de su quinto LP de estudio "Forever in time" en concreto la canción que le da nombre y de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Stargazery - Carnival Puppeteers

CARNIVAL  PUPPETEERS 

Stargazery, la banda finlandesa, otra de esas de las que te das cuenta mirando atrás que llevan ya dos décadas en activo (desde 2005) aunque en tu cabeza parezca una banda "de esas nuevas", esto pasa mucho (al menos a mí). El caso es que son ese típico grupo que con todo el tiempo de actividad que llevan el hecho de que lleven tan solo cuatro LP's de estudio se antoja un legado demasiado escaso a pesar de que la calidad media de sus obras sea notable. El último de sus discos ha visto la luz la pasada semana, "Carnival puppeteers" (7 de noviembre), y hoy quiero dejar en el blog la canción que da nombre a la obra, de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Pink Cream 69 - Shame

SHAME 

"Electrified", o la resurrección de Pink cream 69 tras unos años de tumbos de la banda germana después de que Andi Deris abandonase la banda tras su enorme "Games people play" de 1993 para formar parte de Helloween desde entonces. El reemplazo para Deris en lo vocal, desde el inicio, David Readman, no pudo ser mejor, más acertado, el problema al inicio de la llegada del músico a la banda fue algo mucho más compositivo, perdiendo la identidad el grupo editando dos albumes "Change" en 1995 y "Food for thought" de 1997 que he sido siempre incapaz de digerir, demasiado diría "Grunge" influido por ese nefasto (para mí) sonido que invadió la escena internacional en ese lustro del 95 a los 2000, contagiando incluso a bandas como Pink Cream 69. Sin embargo, como en un ataque de sensated compositiva, la banda regresó en 1998 a una senda mucho más acorde a su trayectoria, aprovechando entonces sí, y de ahí en adelante, las muchas virtudes de su nuevo vocalista David Readman con unas composiciones hechas a su medida y a la de la banda. Electrified es un disco de esos que gusta escuchar, que demuestra que muchas veces "evolucionar" por evolucionar no merece la pena sin un destino claro y que un paso atrás hace coger carrerilla en muchas ocasiones. Edguy - Vain Glory Opera

VAIN  GLORY  OPERA 

Edguy, o lo que casi es lo mismo Tobias Sammet en su banda madre, dejó bien claro desde sus inicios mismos que estaba llamado a ser algo especial, por encima de la media, un grupo con miras a conquistar la cima, pero lo que no entraba en las quinielas era que la ambición del músico terminase por dejar a la banda con la que comenzó a un lado para nutrir a su nuevo proyecto Avantasia de manera única, lo que terminaría por enterrar a Edguy, progresiva pero inexorablemente. En 1998, la banda alemana publicaba su segundo LP de estudio, "Vain glory opera", y en ella se veía todo lo anteriormente mencionado desde un punto de vista potencial, desde luego lo de la "opera rock" ya se veía desde el título, aunque hasta 2001 no se publicase el debut de Avantasia, además quedaba patente la aparente facilidad del músico para crear temas grandilocuentes, muy propicios para el lucimiento de invitados y la venta fácil, como el tema que daba nombre a la obra sin ir más lejos, del que dejo hoy en el blog un enlace a youtube.

Drakkar - Quest For Glory (Valhalla)

QUEST  FOR  GLORY  (VALHALLA) 

Estos italianos si que llegaron en el momento adecuado, a la escena perfecta para su sonido, a finales de los 90, al calor del éxito de los por entonces omnipresentes Rhapsody, para con una presonalidad propia, pero bebiendo de la misma fuente que los mencionados Rhapsody aprovechar el impulso de ellos para tratar de arrancar su carrera. Son Drakkar, formados en 1995 y que debutan en formato LP en 1998 con "Quest for glory". Siete LP's de estudio desde su formación habla de nuevo de una banda no lo suficientemente consistente, con demasiadas pausas a pesar de haber estado en activo teoricamente de forma continuada, así, agrupan sus discos en "arreones" compositivos de tres, dos y dos por década, flaco favor para una escena tan llena y un público ya poco amigo de la fidelidad que agradece mucho más las "cucharaditas compositivas constantes" que los silencios largos entre "atracones". Angra - Wings Of Reality

WINGS  OF  REALITY 

El tercer trabajo de estudio de los brasileños Angra "Fireworks" es por méritos propios una de esas obras que han alcanzado el estatus de clásico, del power en este caso pero en general de nuestro sonido. Ya venía la banda en 1998, que fue la fecha de publicación de la mencionada obra, de publicar dos albumes que dieron mucho que hablar, el impresionante debut "Angels cry" de 1993 y su sucesor "Holy Land" de 1996, este segundo mucho más progresivo y enrevesado pero indudablemente repleto de claidad, así que para la tercera obra "Fireworks" sobre la banda caían las miradas de la escena esperando su siguiente paso, y corriendo el año 1998, en plena explosión power, la responsabilidad no debía ser pequeña. Se trata además del último LP de la banda con la formación clásica inicial, incluido Andre Matos a la voz que tras la obra, en 2001 abandonaría la banda. El disco muestra una aproximación compositiva mayor a un heavy metal más directo, menos experimental, y de él dejo hoy en el blog el tema que lo abre, "Wings of reality" del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Firewind - Breaking The Silence

BREAKING  THE  SILENCE 

Firewind es sin duda una de las bandas griegas más internacionales, tanto en lo referente a su reconocimiento como a sus miembros, y claro al hecho de tener una figura reconocida globalmente al frente como es Gus G. El grupo siempre ha tenido que sobrevivir al mismo tiempo con el trabajo de Gus en otros proyectos y bandas por lo que la continuidad no ha sido homogenea desde su formación en 1998, sin embargo, a pesar de los importantes nombres de bandas y músicos con que se relaciona a Gus G, la banda ha publicado un total de 10 LP's de estudio a fecha de esta reseña. El cuarto album de estudio de la banda "Allegiance" se publica en 2006, y de él dejo hoy en el blog su canción "Breaking The Silence" con la colaboración de la cantante Tara Teresa, y de la que dejo un enlace a youtube de su clip oficial.

La historia de la música en general, y como siempre del sonido metálico en particular, está plagada de casos de bandas que han escogido mal el momento para desarrollar su carrera, más allá de la valía de ese tipo de bandas, su principal lastre terminaría siendo llegar ya a una escena saturada de ese tipo de sonido, que facilmente una década antes podría haberles funcionado, algo muy común en grupos de heavy metal de corte clásico que lo intentaban a finales de los 80 y comienzos de los 90, fracasando porque la escena de esos momentos había evolucionado hacia otra cosa y los oyentes simplemente desechaban la fórmula por verla anticuada, algo que también pasaba con el power en los 2010, y concretamente hoy el caso es de ese power "Rhapsodiano" de bandas italianas como estos Pleasure Slaves, que sin desmerecer a esa legión de bandas que aparecieron desde finales de los 90, si llegan una década tarde para haber tenido mejor suerte. Su único LP lo publican en 2012 "The last of the giants" y de él quiero dejar en el blog otra de sus canciones, "The power of the knights" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Helldorados - You Live You Learn You Die

YOU  LIVE  YOU  LEARN  YOU  DIE 

El comienzo de esta banda alemana parecía augurar un rápido ascenso a la banda, con ese aire fresco y novedoso para la época, (comienzo de los años 10, la década pasada), editando dos LP's de estudio (que a la postre serían los únicos a fecha de esta reseña ya que se supone que siguen en activo) en 2013 y 2014 "Helldorados " y "Lessons In Decay" respectivamente. Después de ello, del ruido inicial, Helldorados cae en un largo silencio que dura desde 2015. Realmente no hicieron nada novedoso su sonido era un hard heavy de corte modernete, bien ejecutado, enganchón, de ahí el potencial de crecimiento que luego se quedaría en nada. Hoy quiero traer al blog uno de los temas de su debut en formato LP "Helldorados", como decía antes de 2013, en concreto "You live, you learn, you die" del que dejo un enlace a youtube de su clip oficial.

Grailknights - Weekend Ninja

 

WEEKEND  NINJA

Cada vez me queda más claro que la calidad de las bandas no tiene porqué estar reñida con una imagen irreverente con los cánones metálicos o excéntrica, el ejemplo de los germanos Grailknights es buena prueba de ello. Si hubieran querido podrían haber desarrollado una carrera mucho más dentro de los límites estéticos pero de esta manera han encontrado su senda, destacando del resto en ese sentido y hallando un filón compositivo y un rol al que incluir a los fans en sus conciertos. Capaces son sin duda de construir temas memorables, coreables y enganchones como por ejemplo este "Weekend Ninja" del que dejo hoy en el blog un enlace a youtube.

Frozen Land - Dead End

DEAD  END 

Los finlandeses Frozen Land publicarán en este 2025 su tercer LP de estudio "Icemelter", (21 de noviembre). Los dos primeros albumes dejaron ese regusto clásico del power metal nórdico, con un cierto cambio en la formación para su segundo disco en 2023 que para este tercero de mantiene, así pues, este es el disco de confirmación y asentamiento para la banda que promete que esta nueva obra tiene algo más de agresividad y contundencia, veremos, de momento nos dejan su primer adelanto "Dead End" del que dejo hoy un enlace a youtube.

Viper - Signs Of The Night

SIGNS  OF  THE  NIGHT 

Los brasileños dejaron muy claro desde su mismo debut que iban a ser una banda especial, que en ellos había algo que se debia seguir y que daría que hablar, y a pesar de su origen para la época (hblamos de los 80 y de Brasil), llegaron a través de su apuesta por grabar en inglés, muy lejos, más de lo esperable con dichas premisas, poniendo las bases a lo que luego llegaría a ser mucho más grande, la banda Angra. Precisamente de su debut de 1987, "Soldiers of sunrise" quiero dejar hoy en el blog otra de sus canciones, otra muestra de su talento ya desde su juventud, la canción "Sign of the night" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Darklon - Mind Reaper

MIND  REAPER 

Los griegos Darklon siguen dando pasos en su carrera, este año con su tercer LP "Mind Reaper" que verá la luz de forma oficial el próximo día 28 de este mes de noviembre. Será el tercer LP de la banda que siguen en la senda iniciada en los dos primeros albumes de heavy power de corte épico, siguiendo si se quiere un estilo hibrido entre los dos lados del charco, notándose un cierto aire americano en su sonido. Queen - We Will Rock You

WE  WILL  ROCK  YOU 

Desde luego relacionar la música de Queen (en general y en su conjunto) con las raices del heavy metal es sin duda un asunto cogido por los pelos, pero si miramos al material inicial de la banda, y tenemos en cuenta los inicios de nuestro sonido en una variación del rock que por evolución natural terminaría dando vida al heavy metal, traer algo del material de los británicos Queen no parece tan descabellado, sobre todo acudiendo a temas icónicos como el que hoy nos ocupa, "We will rock you", de su sexto LP de estudio "News of the workd" de 1977, un tema que resume bien como enfocar una idea simple puede dar los mejores resultados como aquí sucedió, y es que el bueno de Brian May se inspiró en los cotidianos cantos futboleros del momento para aislar su efectividad ante una respuesta colectiva, masiva, en la que la propia simpleza es parte importante del éxito, es lo que viene a ser diseñar un tema coreable para el directo y eficaz, si a eso le añades la brevedad y un no menos breve aunque absolutamente enganchón punteo de guitarra para cerrar el tema solo puedes tener la receta del éxito. dejo hoy en el blog un enlace a youtube del clip oficial de este "We will rock you" de 1977, al fin y al cabo estoy absolutamente convencido de que a más de un grupo de heavy posterior y actual le habrá inspirado un tema tan eterno como este.

Judas Priest - The Ripper

THE  RIPPER 

A estas alturas de la película no debería haber nadie que no viese a Judas como lo que son, un ejemplo fundamental dentro del heavy metal como tal y sin duda alguna una de las primeras bandas en esgrimir un sonido completamente reconocible y calificable de heavy metal tal cual, un buen ejemplo fue su segundo disco "Sad wings of destiny" de 1976 que en un principio no cosecharía un gran reconocimiento internacional, de lo que se puede intuir lo innovador de su sonido para la época, al final en esos años, aún en pañales, el heavy metal deba sus primeros pasoa todavía, y Judas aquí logró sacarse de la manga un disco lleno de temas que se podrían poner como ejemplo de como hacer heavy metal, sin ir más lejos el que dejo hoy en el blog perteneciente a esta obra, "The Ripper", del que dejo un enlace a youtube de su clip oficial.

Blizzen - No More Room In Hell

 

NO  MORE  ROOM  IN  HELL 

Creo que todos estaremos bastante de acuerdo en que dificilmente una portada de un disco puede ser más heavy, cumpliendo absolutamente todos los estereotipos que cabría esperar, y lo mejor del tema es que la banda compositivamente hablando sigue dicha senda desde un punto de vista de la vieja escuela, en definitiva una banda que facilmente podría haber sacado la obra en 1984, pero que lo ha hecho en este 2025, son los alemanes Blizzen, en su tercer LP de estudio llamado "Metalectric", que verá la luz de forma oficial el próximo 21 de noviembre y del que nos dejan este adelanto, "No more room in hell" del que hoy dejo un enlace a youtube de su clip oficial.

Xentrix - Heaven Cent

HEAVEN  CENT 

Los británicos Xentrix son otra de esas bandas que llevan toda una vida en activo a pesar de que su discografía pueda hacer pensar lo contrario en lo que a su extensión se refiere, ya que se forman en 1988 y siguen en activo, eso sí, con dos parones entre medias, para haber publicado en todos esos años de actividad solo seis LP's de estudio. Su último periodo en activo comienza en 2013, habiendo dado como fruto dos LP's, y su periodo inicial entre 1988 hasta 1997 ha dado los cuatro primeros albumes. Su debut se produce en 1989 con "Shattered Existence" que tuvo una buena acogida a pesar de que el thrash metal en esos años era algo bastante omnipresente con la consiguiente saturación de la escena internacional. Hoy en día es uno de esos albumes esenciales para cualquier thrasher británico, y de él quiero dejar en el blog hoy una de sus canciones, en concreto "Heaven Cent" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Gladenfold - For My Queen

FOR  MY  QUEEN 

Los finlandeses Gladenfold son un buen ejemplo de ese tipo de bandas que han escogido la calidad antes que la cantidad, mostrando un enorme potencial desde el inicio mismo de su carrera pero siguiendo sus propios tempos a la hora de publicar su siguiente material de estudio, así, la banda formada en 2003, comienza su carrera con tres EP's, (2006, 2008 y 2011) hasta la publicación de su debut en formato LP en 2014. Ya habían despertado grandes expectativas en esta primera parte de su carrera, y su primer LP sería la confirmación de ellas, sin embargo, siguiendo su filosofía no sacarían su segundo LP hasta 2019. La tercera obra la publican en 2022 y en el inminente ya 2026 verá la luz su cuarta "Soulbound", para el 27 de febrero. Sus inicios eran un terreno compositivo más orientado al death melódico, y a medida que ha ido avanzando su carrera su sonido se ha ido revistiendo cada vez más de un sonido power sin relegar del todo el punto death melódico, aunque este tema de este nuevo LP que dejo hoy en el blog, su canción "for my queen" es absolutamente power, y de ella que dejo un enlace a youtube de su clip oficial.
