TEARS OF TIME

Crematory es una banda alemana que hace una música que se mueve entre el death metal tradicional y el industrial. Se les ha etiquetado como góticos, pero yo creo que hacen una música que recoge elementos de todas esas variantes para crear un estilo personal, y lo logran. Para mi es uno de los grandes en su género y es sin duda una de las bandas que más me gustan haciedo este sonido. Crematory se crea en Alemania en 1991 comenzando a editar discos de estudio en 1993, momento desde el que han sacado a la luz 12 cd's, que han ido evolucionando desde un death más clásico en sus primeros dos discos hasta un sonido más industrial en sus creaciones intermedias y finales. En su música alternan las voces guturales con voces limpias asi como canciones o discos enteros cantados en inglés con otros cantados en alemán y a diferencia de otras bandas Crematory conserva practicamente intacta la formación inicial del grupo. A medida que evolucionaron musicalmente fueron haciendo que los teclados fuesen teniendo una mayor presencia hasta llegar a ser toda una seña de identidad de su música. He querido traer al blog uno de sus primeros discos, El Illusions, su tercera obra de estudio, de 1995, que aunque no sea el disco que más me gusta de ellos si que contiene alguna de sus canciones que más me gustan, como este Tears of time del que os dejo un enlace a youtube. Voveremos a Crematory más adelante aunque solo sea para hablar del que a mi juicio es uno de sus mejores discos completos, el Revolution de 2004.

Canciones para una vida - Prime Time - Free The Dream

FREE THE DREAM

Hoy os traigo al blog un grupo absolutamente desconocido, los daneses Prime Time, una banda que hace una música dificil de catalogar dentro de un estilo concreto pues se mueven en el filo de diferentes estilos aunque podríamos definir su música como un Hard - heavy melódico con influencias progresivas, pero las canciones no siguen un mismo patrón y desde luego tampoco sus discos de estudio. Este proyecto se forma en 1997 y tras tres años de actividad en la que editan sus tres obras de estudio cesan como banda. Nos dejan tres interesantes discos, sobre todo para mí este Free the Dream, la tercera de sus obras, del año 2000, en donde encontramos un puñado de canciones de las que quiero destacar este título homónimo al disco, Free the dream, que resulta un buen ejemplo de lo que encontramos en este cd. Es un tema en que la melodia de teclado está presente continuamente creando una atmósfera en la canción. En las labores de vocalista encontramos a un Eduard Novinga que a mi me gusta mucho, con una buena voz melódica que hace que escuchar este disco resulte muy sencillo.

Una buena banda que se acerca al estilo de grandes bandas melodicas de rock clásico pero con un sello personal, o de bandas progresivas poco conocidas como los también daneses Cornerstone o Royal Hunt también compatriotas suyos, bandas que aportaron a alguno de sus miembros a este proyecto.  Siempre merece la pena descubrir este tipo de cosas para completar la banda sonora de nuestra vida. Canciones para una vida - Freedom Call - Blackened Sun

BLACKENED SUN

Hablar de Freedom Call es hablar de grandes musicos. La banda alemana se forma en 1998 por el bateria Dan Zimmermann (Gamma Ray) y el comositor, teclista, vocalista y técnico de sonido Chris Bay. Ambos llevaban ya una larga relación musical desde 1988 en que habían coincidido en grupos de versiones como China white o Lanzer a lo largo de la década anterior a la formación de Freedom Call. Deciden darse la oportunidad de crear algo propio justo cuando le bateria Dan entra en Gamma Ray. Freedom Call comienza de esta manera y siempre ha sabido rodearse por grandes músicos, aparte de los mencionados Chris y Dan, por ejemplo Sascha Gerstner en las guitarras hasta su entrada en Helloween, o Ilker Ersin al bajo. Freedom Call comienza a grabar discos de estudio en 1999 sacando hasta la fecha de esta reseña 8 discos en total, a cual mejor. Siempre que hablo de Freedom Call digo lo mismo, es una de esas raras bandas de las que puedo decir que me gusta todo su material, creo que no hay ninguna canción que me desagrade. Su Power metal, muy "happy" en muchas ocasiones te pone las pilas pues su composición es muy cuidada y su producción es simplemente perfecta. Sus letras suelen tener ese punto épico en muchas ocasiones al igual que su melodia apoyada en teclado continuamente. He querido traer al blog este disco Dimensions de 2007, su quinta obra de estudio para acercaros uno de los temas que más me gustan de la banda, por poner uno. Blackened Sun es un medio tiempo que quizás no sea el tema más representativo de la banda pero que a mi siempre me ha encantado. El disco entero es genial pero bueno, como ya he dicho antes se trata de una de esas bandas que son mi debilidad, asi que acercaos a su música sin miedo a equivocaros pues cojais lo que cojais, para mi suena bien. Canciones para una vida - Victory - Are You Ready

ARE YOU READY

En esta ocasión quiero hablar de todo un clásico de los ochenta, se trata de los alemanes Victory, una banda que surge de los restos de otra anterior llamada Fargo que había estado en activo entre 1973 y 1984. En 1985, algunos miembros de Fargo se reunen bajo el nombre de Victory y comienzan a sacar discos en 1985. Victory atraviesa diversas fases y su musica también evoluciona pudiendo hacerse según mi criterio dos fases, hasta 1992 en que la banda hace un hard ' n ' heavy muy ochentero, y desde entonces en adelante con discos más complejos y experimentales y con separaciones y reuniones incluidas. Teoricamente la banda sigue en activo y se rumorea que sacarán en breve algo de material nuevo. Hasta la fecha de esta reseña, Victory tienen 10 discos de estudio, de los que inevitablemente tengo que quedarme con los que inician su andadura como banda, las obras sacadas hasta el 92 de entre las que destaco este Don't get mad get even, de 1986, su segunda obra de estudio y la que a mi personalmente más me gusta. En ella encontramos un heavy hard muy bien compuesto y que te llega enseguida y en la que todos los temas encajan a la perfección unos con otros. Son destacables cualquiera de sus otros discos de estudio hasta el 92 como digo y seguramente encontrareis muchos buenos temas entre su discografía, volveremos con ellos más adelante aunque solo sea para hablar de su estupendo disco Temples of gold. En fin, un clásico para revisar si lo tenias olvidado o para descubrir si aún no lo habias hecho. Dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Crystal Eyes - The Halls Of Valhalla

THE HALLS OF VALHALLA

Hoy os dejo un grupo sueco de power metal que se llama Crystal Eyes. Esta banda se formó en 1992 y comenzó a sacar demos en 1994. A partir de 1999 comenzaron a sacar discos de estudio llegando a editar 7 obras, la última de ellas de hace tan solo un mes llamada Killer. El grupo es un proyecto del teclista y cantante Mikael Dahl, principal compositor de la banda y cantante en la mayoría de sus disco aunque Crystal Eyes ha tenido otros vocalistas como Soren Nico Adamsen, que estuvo con la banda entre 2006 y 2009, o el increible Daniel Heiman de Lost Horizon, quien grabó con ellos su cuarto disco de estudio Confessions of the maker. He querido hacer referencia a su quinta obra de estudio, este dead city dreaming, cantado por Adamsen, para mi gusto la mejor obra en conjunto de la banda. Me parece un gran disco, con un power metal muy correcto, sin grandes alardes pero sin flaquezas tampoco. Es una de esas obras a las que hay que dar la ocasión de ser escuchadas y probablemente te sorprenda en más de una ocasión. Este disco de 2006 cuenta con temas tan buenos como este The Halls of Valhalla, un tema de 7 minutos con un cierto toque épico como puede deducirse por su título. Merece la pena acercarse a esta banda que tiene cosas muy interesantes entre su discografía. Dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Grave Digger - Rebellion (The Clans Are Marching)

REBELLION (THE CLANS ARE MARCHING)

Hoy dejo en el blog una banda que necesita poca o ninguna presentación, los geniales Grave Digger. Se trata de una de las bandas que a mi personalmente más me gustan. Estos alemanes se formaron en 1980 y comenzaron a sacar demos en 1983 grabando su primer larga duración en 1984, y desde el comienzo tuvieron una buena acogida entre el público y la crítica. Tras sacar un EP en 1984 y dos discos más de estudio en 1985 y 1986 decidieron cambiar de nombre para pasar a llamarse Digger hasta el 87 y después Hawaii entre el 88 y el 91. Al no obtener el resultado esperado deciden en 1991 volver a su nombre original de Grave Digger siguiendo así hasta el presente. Grave digger tiene una extensa discografía que consta de 16 discos de estudio así como de 8 EP's. Su música es un heavy power metal contundente con elementos épicos y en ocasiones instrumentaciones tradicionales como gaitas sobre todo, destacando la contundente y particular voz de Chris Boltendahl que hacen de ellos un combo espectacular que recomiendo ver en directo si se tiene la ocasión. Entre 1996 y 1999 Grave Digger sacó una trilogía histórico-medieval que resulta uno de los hitos en su carrera, simplemente perfecta, tres discos antológicos que hay que tener sin más. De ellos el primero es para mi insuperable, es el Tunes of War de 1996 del que aquí os dejo uno de sus temas estrella, el Rebellion, todo un himno no solo de la banda sino dentro del heavy en general. Tras esta trilogía parte de la banda se marcho de Grave Digger para formar la alucinante y por desgracia no suficientemente reconocida banda llamada Rebellion, con Uwe Lulis y Tomi Gottlich, una banda de la que hablaremos también en este blog. Grave Digger ha seguido sacando discos hasta el presente y siguen en forma, cada obra suya es un seguro de vida, nunca defrauda su sonido, te gustará más o menos pero siempre suena bien, la última prueba es su return of the reaper de este 2014. En fin, toda una garantía este grupazo en el que merece la pena bucear para llenarse con sus canciones que son muchas y muy buenas. Dejo un enlace a Youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Black Knight - Aaraigathor (Metal Anthem)

AARAIGATHOR (METAL ANTHEM)

Hoy dejo una de esas bandas absolutamente desconocidas a nivel general pero a la que merece la pena hacer un huequecito entre la música de calidad, se trata de los canadienses Black Knight. Es uno de esos grupos formados en el instituto que por desgracia apenas tuvo repercusión en la época, entre otras cosas, creo, porque su concepto musical era demasiado adelantado a su época, pues con su talento y los medios de hoy en día hubiesen tenido mayor repercusión. Resulta que estos chicos formaron su banda allá por 1981, sacando su primera demo en 1984, para grabar en 1985 su primer y único EP, con cinco temas, al que pertenece este Aaraigathor (Metal anthem), que a mi personalmente me encanta. Este grupo fue a contra corriente desde el comienzo, rompiendo tópicos y siguiendo su propio corazón sin hacer caso a nada más, lo que le da ese toque tan auténtico. Por ejemplo, este tema que dejo en el blog Aaraigathor fue grabado de una sola vez, sin mezclar, algo impensable hoy en día y la banda además fue pionera en hacerse con los servicios de una cantante femenina en una época en que esto del heavy era un club solo de chicos, salvo algunas excepciones. Su estilo musical siempre me ha recordado a los primeros Queensryche, aunque después los de Seattle tuvieron una evolución que creo que en el caso de Black Knight hubiese sido más hacia el power - true metal primitivo, un poco como bandas tipo Attack, etc. Sea como sea no lo sabremos nunca y es una pena pues por la dificultad en encontrar discográficas que se hicieran cargo de sus creaciones y el mercado en alza dentro de nuestra música finalmente la banda canadiense echó el cierre y ceso su actividad. Posteriormente se editó un recopilatorio a principios de este siglo de su EP y su Demo al que pertenece la imagen que abre esta reseña. Aún así nos dejaron canciones como esta que hay que escuchar. Canciones para una vida - Children Of Bodom - Hate Me!

HATE ME!

Desde Finlandia nos llegan estos chicos que hacen una musica que podríamos llamar death metal melódico, sin embargo cogen algunos elementos del power metal haciendo que su musica tenga ese toque tan personal que hace que su sello sea inconfundible. Formados en 1993 bajo el nombre de Inearthed, cambiarían su nombre a Children of Bodom en 1997, inspirados por un asesinato, aun sin resolver, ocurrido en 1960 en un lago finlandes llamado Bodom en el que tres jovenes fueron apuñalados brutalmente hasta su muerte. Desde su cambio de nombre han sacado 8 discos de estudio y uno de los sellos personales de su musica es la utilización del teclado y sus contundentes riffs de guitarra, así como rápidos y técnicos punteos derrochantes de energía. Entre su discografía podemos encontrarnos un buen puñado de buenas canciones y yo he querido dejar en el blog este Hate me!, uno de sus buques insignia y uno de los temas que a mi más me gustan de la banda que enseguida te engancha con esa melodia de teclado para llenarte el cuerpo con energía, un tema sacado de una de sus mejores obras, el Follow the reaper del año 2000, su tercera obra de estudio. En fin, musica de calidad, un poco extrema quizás para oidos no acostumbrados pero de primera sin duda. Dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Riot - Bloodstreets

BLOODSTREETS

Riot es un grupo estadounidense cuya historia comenzó alla por 1975 cuando el guitarrista y compositor Mark Reale lo fundó. Pasó sin pena ni gloria por la escena musical internacional durante una década lo que les hizo pensar en abandonar, de hecho, la banda se separa en 1984 creando el guitarrista la banda Narita con la que saca dos discos que siguieron el mismo destino que Riot. Será en 1988 cuando decide intentarlo de nuevo con el disco Thundersteel, una obra para la que puso lo mejor de sí y para la que cambió toda la formación antigua y que cambiaría su destino musical pues se trata de una obra maestra. A partir de ese momento el éxito llama a su puerta con los siguientes discos y continuan produciendo obras de estudio hasta 2011 con su inmortal soul. En 2012 el genial guitarrista Reale muere y la banda continua bajo el nombre de Riot V con el que sacarán un disco en tan solo un par de semanas llamado Unleash the fire.

Durante su historia Riot ha sacado 14 discos de estudio más el que saldrá en unos días que será el decimoquinto. De ellos para mi destaca este thundersteel, de 1988, un disco que no tiene descartes, una obra completa y para escuchar a fondo. También destacaría el the privilege of power de 1990. Canciones para una vida - Edguy - Robin Hood

ROBIN HOOD

Los alemanes Edguy no necesitan de presentación alguna, en gran parte gracias a su carismático lider Tobias Sammet. El inquieto cantante ha creado aparte del material de su banda madre algun que otro proyecto y colaboración que le ha dado tanta fama si no más que con Edguy, evidentemente me refiero a Avantasia. Pero centremonos en la banda con la que empezó. Edguy nace a comienzos de los noventa viendo realizadas sus primeras demos en 1994. Desde 1995 comenzaron su aventura con discos de estudio y desde entonces han sacado 11 discos de un power metal de impecable factura. En el momento de surgimiento de la banda los chicos aún estaban en el instituto y contaban con apenas 15 años y quizás por ello tengan ese toque irreverente que se les nota en muchas ocasiones en sus letras y sobre todo en sus videoclips. En 1998 la banda da un paso adelante con las primeras colaboraciones de nada menos que Timo Tolkki de Stratovarius, quien también produjo el disco y de Hansi kursch de Blind Guardian, lo que quizás sembro la semilla en la cabeza de Sammet para la futura realización de Avantasia. Desde el Vain glory opera de 1998 todo fue en ascenso en calidad y éxito hasta llegar a ser una de las bandas más importantes a nivel internacional dentro del género.He querido traer al blog una canción gamberra de la banda, este Robin Hood de su Age of the Joker de 2011 que aunque ni de lejos me parece su mejor disco, si que tiene canciones tan buenas como esta, una canción de 8 minutos con varios cambios y con un clip muy humorístico. Canciones para una vida - Annihilator - King Of The Kill

KING OF THE KILL

Otra gran banda dentro del thrash internacional, son los canadienses Annihilator. En marcha desde 1984 tienen 14 discos de estudio, viendo la luz el primero de ellos, su aclamado Alice in hell, en 1989. La banda sigue en activo y con buena salud musical saliendo su último trabajo el año pasado. Una banda Annihilator que ha afrontado muchos cambios en su lineup a lo largo de su historia, entre ellos cuatro cambios de vocalista. Entre su música encontramos buenas canciones sin tener que esmerarnos mucho en buscar y para mi sus mejores obras son las iniciales aunque he de reconocer que es cuando más les he seguido. Me gustan mucho el Alice in Hell, el Set the world on fire y este king of the kill de 1994 que hoy dejo en el blog con su canción homónima, un tema muy característico del grupo canadiense. Energía, riffs contundentes y estribillos que se quedan rápido en tu cabeza, un tema para levantar el ánimo de uno de los grandes en el estilo. Dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Turisas - Battle Metal

BATTLE METAL

Espectacular banda  fomada en 1998 de la aparentemente inagotable cantera finlandesa. Para mi es una de las bandas con mayúsculas y siento debilidad por su música. Con tan solo cuatro discos de estudio y un EP comenzaron a editar material propio en 2001 sacando su primer larga duración en 2004, este Battle metal del que dejo aquí su canción homónima. Su estilo es un Folk metal simfónico con toques black alternando voz gutural con voz limpia. En sus comienzos nos dejaban una música mucho más Viking, para tornarse poco a poco más power simfónico y terminar evolucionando hacia algo más progresivo en su última obra Turisas2013. He de reconocer que prefería la época inicial y media de la banda y para mi este Battle metal junto a su the Varangian way son mis obras preferidas sin olvidarnos de su Stand up and fight, probablemente su trabajo más comercial, y muy bueno sin duda. Turisas es una de esas bandas que gustan de experimentar y no parecen tener problemas con hacer lo que quieren sin atender a críticas, otro ejemplo la canción Rasputin, bonus track de 2007 versionando a Boney M y con un clip muy curioso. Su última obra Turisas2013 me ha costado más digerirla, veremos si en su siguiente disco siguen esta linea o vuelve un poco por sus anteriores fueros, cosa que particularmente yo les agradecería. En fín buena banda de la que encontrareis grandes temas y de la que este Battle Metal es uno de ellos y un gran disco. Dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Angra - Carry On

CARRY ON

Angra es una banda brasileña que lleva ya más de 20 años en la escena musical. Al hablar de esta banda debemos referirnos dos épocas en relación a sus vocalistas, la época con Andre Matos y la época sin él. Angra se forma en 1991 en Brasil haciendo un power metal con un toque progresivo. Desde el inicio de la banda el joven vocalista Andre Matos estuvo en la misma, proveniendo de la banda brasileña Viper, a la que nos referiremos más adelante en este blog. Permaneció en ella hasta el año 99 sacando la banda  3 discos de estudio y 4 EP's con él en tareas vocales. Dejaría la banda entonces por incompatibilidad con sus compañeros a nivel compositivo para formar Shaman y después su carrera en solitario con su propio nombre hasta el presente. A partir de ese momento Angra sigue su historia aparte de Matos.

Angra tiene siete discos de estudio en total y 5 EP's. Este Angels Cry es el primero de los larga duración de la banda, de 1993, y uno de los que a mi más me gustan. En el encontramos toda la frescura del grupo en sus inicios habiendo varios temas que enseguida te entran, y he querido traer al blog un tema muy característico de ellos como es Carry on, una canción rápida y directa que llena de energía. Como dato curioso una noticia referente a esta banda pues han incluido a nada menos que Fabio Lione de Rhapsody en las tareas vocales desde 2013, y aunque aún no hay material editado en estudio con el a la voz yo personalmente tengo ganas y curiosidad por escuchar la nueva formación. Canciones para una vida - Jaldaboath - Hark The Herald

HARK THE HERALD

Un enfoque totalmente diferente, los ingleses Jaldaboath. Inspirados por la tradición de los trobadores, la música tradicional, el heavy metal y como ellos mismos dicen los Monty Python denominando a su música como " Tumultuous Teutonic Templar Thrash ", o " Hammering Heraldic Metal ", lo cual es toda una declaración de intenciones. Habiendo más grupos que recurren al humor en sus letras e instrumentaciones estos son,  junto con los italianos Nanowar of Steel los que más me gustan. Jaldaboath es un proyecto de James Fogarty quien ya ha tenido proyectos anteriores de Black death metal y producción musical. Han sacado hasta la fecha de esta reseña dos albumes de estudio y un EP desde 2008 y este The rise of the heraldic beasts es el primer larga duración de estudio, de 2010, del que quiero destacar la canción  Hark the herald, un divertido tema que no renuncia a nada quedandose con facilidad en la cabeza, y con un videoclip que hay que ver y del que os dejo un enlace a youtube. Una banda fresca que merece la pena conocer.

Canciones para una vida - Rage - Baby I'm Your Nightmare

BABY I'M YOUR NIGHTMARE

Rage es una banda de Alemania que se formó con el nombre de Avenger en 1984 sacando un disco bajo esa denominación en 1985. A partir de 1986 comenzaron a llamarse Rage y con ese nombre han sacado la friolera de 20 discos de estudio hasta la fecha de esta reseña. Su música ha evolucionado desde sus comienzos de un heavy speed power metal con toques thrash hasta el power metal con toques sinfónicos y orquestaciones de hoy en día, y han pasado por cambios en su formación aunque siempre con músicos de gran reputación. Rage es una banda de enorme productividad, grabando material cada año desde su formación, algo bastante inusual y sin dejar de lado la calidad. Para lograr algo así se han apoyado en la grabación de muchos EP's, exactamente 10, además de sus discos oficiales de estudio. Rage es una banda que siempre responde a las espectativas y que no tiene miedo a la experimentación como han demostrado en su último proyecto con orquestación llamado LMO (Lingua Mortis Orchestra), que además no es considerado como material propio de Rage sino como una especie de proyecto paralelo. Por lo tanto, después de todo lo dicho resulta dificil escoger un solo tema de Rage ya que su extensa carrera nos deja muchísimas canciones y de mucha calidad. He querido escoger el disco Trapped de 1992, y de él uno de sus clásicos, Baby I'm your nightmare, un tema que me encanta de una de sus mejores épocas, de principios a mediados de los noventa.
