CHAMPIONS

Crowne, la banda sueca que tan buenas sensaciones nos diera en su debut "Kings in the north" en 2021, da su segundo paso en este inicio de 2023 con "Operation Phoenix" en lo que es indudablemente una confirmación de lo en serio que va esto, una demostración de la calidad que pondrá otra banda más de nivel máximo y origen sueco en la escena internacional dentro de ese sonido a medio camino entre el hard rock moderno y el heavy melódico, en una onda Eclipse, H.E.A.T., o Dynazty por ejemplo. El grupo es garantía de calidad aunque solo sea por el tipo de músicos que se ha juntado aquí, así, aparecen nombres de bandas tales como Dynazty, H.E.A.T. Europe o The Poodles, ahí es nada. Canciones para una vida - Isengard - Stormcrow

 

STORMCROW

No por muchas veces mencionado es menos cierto, que la década de los noventa, la segunda mitad sobre todo y el comienzo de los 2000 fueron años donde las bandas dentro del power metal de corte europeo y de temática fantástico histórica abundaron, encontraron un terreno perfecto para desarrollarse, retroalimentandose unas con otras hasta engrosar la legión de seguidores que seguían este tipo de sonido. Entre tantas bandas muchas de ellas apenas despuntaron, en ocasiones por falta de calidad, falta de constancia, o falta de promoción, pero es siempre un gusto sumergirse entre los grupos menos conocidos para tratar de descubrir pequeños tesoros en forma de canciones o de albumes completos que te sorprenden de alguna manera. En este marco encontramos a los suecos Isengard, con tal nombre tolkieniano uno se puede hacer idea de que cumplen con muchos de los clichés mencionados hoy, y así es. Es una banda claramente de temas sueltos para mí, de pescar en su discografía para descubrir momentos especiales como el que hoy dejo en el blog, perteneciente a su último LP de estudio "Crownless Majesty" de 2001, el tercero de la banda, el tema "Stormcrow", absolutamente evocador, lleno de ese toque fantástico y en cierta medida épico, canción de la que dejo hoy un enlace a youtube.

HALL  OF  THE  SLAIN

Vamos hoy con la banda serbia "Oathbringer", un grupo de reciente formación, (2020, 2019 si tenemos en cuenta su primer periodo como "Riddle of steel"). Estamos ante un sonido que podríamos considerar como heavy metal clásico con cierto tufillo true metalero y vcación épico fantástica. Parece igualmente que han empezado con las ideas muy claras puesto que su primer LP, del que hablaré en el blog, vio la luz este recién pasado 2022, y durante este 2023 verá la luz su segunda obra de estudio a la que pretenecerá este tema que hoy traigo al blog, el single "Hall of the slain", del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Megadeth - Peace Sells

 

PEACE  SELLS

El 86 fue un gran año musicla dentro de nuestras fronteras metálicas, y concretamente en el terreno thrash se editaron importantes obras no solo a nivel compositivo sino además desde la perspectiva de las ventas. Entre los que dieron en el clavo en lo que a discos importantes en general se refiere estuvieron los estadounidense Megadeth, siempre controvertidos, siempre en ese filo para el gran público que les empuja hacia arriba o hacia abajo casi con igual impulso, pero más alla de eso, de esa eterna discusión, estamos ante uno de sus momentos cimbre en este 1986 con su "Peace sells... but who's Buying", por el alto nivel general de la obra, es decir que se mantiene estable rayando a gran altura desde el comienzo. Para ese año la banda estaba ya consolidada en lo que querían hacer, tenían un debut que les puso en el mapa precediendo este trabajo, y con el trataron de tapar algunas bocas. La obra abre impresionante y la primera mitad de la misma es simplemente intachable, buen ejemplo el tema que da nombre a la misma, "Peace sells", canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube, todo un clásico del thrash metal.

Canciones para una vida - John Norum - Eternal Flame

 

ETERNAL  FLAME

Vamos hoy con un sonido enfocado al hard rock, aunque desde una perspectiva guitarrista siempre he visto a John Norum como heavy metal melódico aunque desde el enfoque vocal su sonido pueda ser facilmente enmarcable en el rock duro. El caso es que, tras su salida de Europe para iniciar su carrera en solitario, el guitarrista sueco siempre supo rodearse de buenos músicos a los que, sumando el buen hacer de él mismo, tan solo podía dar como resultado calidad. El primero de sus albumes se llamó "Total Control" de 1987, tras la salida de Europe despues de la gira de "The Final Countdown", y para él contó con la colaboración vocal en tres de sus temas del cantante Goran Edman, el resto fue cantado por él mismo. Como decía más arriba, heavy metal melódico, hard 'n heavy o hard rock, sea como fuere calidad total, como queda bien patente en temas como "Eternal Flame" de la que dejo hoy un enlace a youtube.

CALICO  JACK

Siempre es un gustazo retornar a las grandes bandas, y más hacerlo a las preferidas personales en su momento más brillante, en este caso a los germanos Running Wild en la década de los 80, donde llenos por la potente pegada, la incontrolable energía, descargaban su furia metálica sobre un público sediento de épica, jamás llegaron a tener el favor unánime del gran público, pero en lo personal desde siempre a mí me conquistaron con su propuesta. "Port Royal" llegaba en 1988, para dar forma al cuarto de sus albumes de estudio, como digo en un momento de la banda en que no hacían concesiones, inmersos ya de lleno en la temática pirata que guiaría el resto de su carrera, una obra fundamental, influyente, demoledoramente adictiva, llena de potencia y melodías Runniwildianas, de la que hoy dejo en el blog otro de sus temas, en esta ocasión "Calico Jack", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Metallica - Screaming Suicide

 

SCREAMING  SUICIDE

Ya tenemos encima el nuevo material de estudio de los estadounidenses Metallica, una banda que todo el mundo conoce a nivel planetario, ajeno o no al mundo metlálico, es una de esas marcas ya en si mismas que trascienden su propio nombre e incluso sonido. Igualmente, y en gran medida debido a su globalización personal son siempre foco de polémica, sobre todo por parte de aquellos que les vieron nacer musicalmente, que les han conocido desde sus inicios, siendo parte histórica del metal con su primera parte compositiva, básicamente la década de los ochenta una vez más, donde en gran medida dieron a conocer el thrash metal de la forma más global, aunque hoy en día, todos estaremos de acuerdo en que esos Metallica están bien lejos de los actuales, en todo, podríamos hacer una analogía con la portada de su último LP, "72 Seasons" que verá la luz este próximo mes de abril, una portada que muestra solo la "M" de su nombre, muestra del poderoso mundo marketing que detrás llevan, y casi un simbolo de lo poco que de sus comienzos queda de ellos. Si nos fijamos en su discografía, este será solo su duodécimo LP de estudio, que contrasta con la cifra que multiplica por 10 su número de discos oficiales en vivo, esto ya no parece tanto un grupo al uso como una factoría de dividendos en forma de merchandising. El tema musical estrictamente es otro, nadie a estas alturas puede pretender encontrar en una obra nueva de Metallica un segundo "Ride the lightning" por no hablar de un segundo "Kill 'em all", esto ahora es otro tema, muy diseñado, tan rebuscado y mezclado que ha perdido por completo su esencia inicial, por más que se adorne, sin embargo hablamos de un buen grupo, y siempre, con todo lo que conlleva, Metallica sonará bien, pero no para ser Metallica. Cada nuevo sencillo es una demostración, por ejemplo "Screaming Suicide" del que dejo hoy un enlace a youtube de su, en pocas horas, millonario en visitas clip oficial, poco más que añadir, Metallica, fenómeno global, seguro que tu tendrás tu propia filosofía al respecto.

Canciones para una vida - Glittertind - Varder I Brann

 

VARDER  I  BRANN

Glittertind es una banda noruega de esas que se refugió compositivamente en el floklore nórdico, primero, al inicio de su carrera, agarrandose a un concepto metálico para después suavizarlo a partir de su tercera obra y encaminarlo a un rock indie. La banda se forma en 2001, y como digo sus dos primeras obras pueden catalogarse sin ningún problema como folk metal, además muy interesante. En 2003 editan su debut, "Evige Asatro" que vería su continuación en 2009 con su segundo LP "Landkjenning". A partir de ese momento cambian el rumbo compositivo hacia ese rock introspectivo que se aleja del heavy metal. Hoy quiero dejar en el blog una de las canciones que componen su segundo album de estudio, concretamente "Varder I Brann", con una atmósfera nórdica a la que añadiendo las letras en noruego nos dibuja una evocadora escena vikinga, una canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Krokus - World On Fire

 

WORLD  ON  FIRE

2022 fue el año que escogió un clasico, uno de esos nombres míticos e influyentes aunque para muchos no de los de primera línea como los suizos Krokus, para poner fin a su trayectoria de más de cinco décadas, algo que no muchos pueden decir, y ha sido igualmente el año en que han echado marcha atrás para volver a activarse, intención de seguir adelante, veremos como sucede... El caso es que se trata de una banda de las buenas, su trayectoria, su tesón, su discografía así lo atestigua, 18 LP's de estudio muestran momentos más progersivos en sus comienzos, para girar hacia el heavy metal, el hard rock y el hard 'n heavy, siempre con su sello particular y personal, reconocibles. Incluso han tenido sus "malos" momentos, entrecomillados los "Malos" pues para sí quisieran muchas bandas LP's como su noveno album de estudio, "Change of adress", de 1986, criticado por muchos, con un giro estilístico innegable, pero no tan nefasto como el castigo de ventas y críticas hizo notar. Hablamos de 1986, años de cambios, muchos grupos se abrían hacia el mercado omnipotente americano, tan influido entonces por el hard y el glam, y muchas bandas europeas y mundiales en general quisieron un pedazo de ese pastel, algunas de ellas gestionandolo con mejor o peor acierto, y creo sinceramente que Krokus no fueron ni de lejos los que más la cagaron, de hecho me parece un album bastante decente y bastante Krokus, quizá presionados por la discográfica, quizá obligados por las circunstancias, pero respetable obra de un muy respetable grupo. Buen ejemplo de lo decente de la obra es el tema "World on fire", cocinado a fuego medio, y del que hoy dejo en el blog un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Nightwish - Dark Chest Of Wonders

 

DARK  CHEST  OF  WONDERS

 Vaya por delante que nunca me he considerado muy fan como tal de Nightwish, y tampoco del universo de bandas que han traido al calor de su éxito, desde luego que disfruto de muchos momentos de su carrera, de albumes increibles sobre todo y en lo personal como "Oceanborn", pero al final me doy cuenta de que se trata siempre de una lucha mia contra lo que me nace, y sobre todo, y que me perdonen muchos lectores, el estilo operístico, sobre todo de Tarja, y de posteriores imitadoras, me termina saturando y resultando demasiado antinatural dentro del heavy metal como movimiento. Dicho esto, hoy vuelvo a reconocer la importancia de esta banda en el mundo metálico, y prueba de su fortaleza es también que la salida de miembros en su momento fundamentales del grupo no pudo acabar con él. El último de los LP's con Tarja en funciones vocales sería este "Once" de 2004, tan odiado como amado, el quinto LP de la banda que realmente solo ha editado nueve en su carrera, otro rasgo distintivo de su potencia comercial, nueve discos de estudio en casi treinta años de carrera se antoja un tanto "justito". El caso es que este disco, "Once" dejo buenos momentos compositivos, por ejemplo el que abre el disco, "Dark chest of wonders", uno de sus mejores temas en mi opinión, canción de la que hoy dejo un enlace a youtube. Nightwish, poco más que añadir, (para lo bueno y para lo malo).

Canciones para una vida - Bloodbound - Odin's Prayer

 

ODIN'S  PRAYER

Bloodbound va paso a paso agrandando su nombre dentro del mundillo power, y es que si echamos una mirada atrás nos damos cuenta de que son ya más de quince años de carrera, casi veinte y este "Tales from the north" que verá la luz de forma oficial el próximo mes de julio supondrá ya para el grupo su décimo album de estudio. Está claro que han ido afinando su sonido, adecuandolo a estandard europeo que más llega al gran público, en ocasiones incluso clonando un poco su forma de hacer canciones a la de bandas ya gigantescas como Sabaton por ejemplo. En este "Tales from the north" de 2023 nos enseñan un album conceptual, nórdico, vikingo, muy sueco, con incluso elementos folk según afirman. De momento han presentado su primer sencillo, "Odin's Prayer" del que hoy dejo en el blog un enlace a youtube de su lyric video oficial.

Canciones para una vida - Kamelot - One More Flag In The Ground

 

ONE  MORE  FLAG  IN  THE  GROUND

Kamelot es otra de esas bandas mucho más que consolidadas, uno de esos grupos que son influencia para muchos y que han llegado a transformrse en un compendio de músicos que van y vienen, más allá de sus origenes y de otras cosas, son una institución musical que desde 1991 se han hecho un nombre con todo merecimiento que hace que cada paso nuevo que deciden dar repercuta a lo largo y ancho del planeta metálico. Desde sus inicios tan solo dos de sus integrantes permanecen en la banda, el guitarrista Thomas Youngblood y el bajista Sean Tibbetts, y la gran cantidad de musicos que en algun momento han pertenecido a la banda o que han colaborado es interminable y muy reconocible. Desde 2018 no publicaban nada nuevo y han escogido este 2023 para editar su décimo tercer LP de la banda, "The Awakening" que verá la luz de forma oficial el 17 de marzo, hasta ese momento en estos días nos dejan su primer adelanto, "One more flag in the ground" del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Dragonhammer - Believe

 

BELIEVE

Otra de esas bandas que parecen haber desarrollado su carrera al margen de los circuitos más conocidos a base de tesón pero con demasiada irregularidad es Dragonhammer, un grupo italiano que lleva en activo desde finales de los 90 centrando su sonido dentro del power, seguramente arrastrados por la corriente power epico fantástica que explotó en esos años en la escena italiana, aunque como digo estos chicos no terminaron nunca de coger la ola y permanecieron más en un segundo plano. Una vez más ello no responde a la calidad o major dicho a su ausencia pues poco tienen que envidiar a otras bandas coetaneas y compatriotas, por lo que seguramente la saturación de la escena musical en esas condiciones y época tendría algo que ver. Su primer disco lo editan en 2001 y aunque siguen en activo con tan solo un miembro superviviente en la banda desde los inicios, el bajista, solo cinco LP's de estudio se antoja un tanto escaso para un periodo de existencia ya considerable. Su segundo LP, "Time for expiation" ve la luz en 2004, y de él quiero hoy dejar e el blog una de sus canciones, en concreto "Believe", buen ejemplo de su gran potencial dentro del subgénero, y de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Cans - The Key

 

THE  KEY

Para aquellos que puedan quedarse con ganas de más sonido Hammerfall, la versión de la banda desde la perspectiva propia del cantante Joacim Cans bajo su propio nombre no deja de ser una variación mínima de la misma, por lo que seguidores de la primera estarán a gusto con la segunda. Para la ocasión el bueno de Cans se rodea de algunos nombres procedentes de Hammerfall, y además de otros nombres muy conocidos y reputados de la escena internacional, por ejemplo Snowy Shaw a la batería. Al final el resultado no puede ser malo, quizá esperable, para nada sorprendente pues y además sin continuidad ya que el proyecto de momento solo ha tenido una sola obra de estudio, "Beyond the gates" de 2004, y de la que hoy dejo en el blog otra de sus canciones, "The Key" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Celesty - Unbreakeable

 

UNBREAKABLE

Celesty fue una banda de esas de las que uno tienen la sensación de que han estructurado mal su carrera musical, siempre con ese sentimiento latente de que habiendo acertado más en lo que rodea al hecho compositivo en sí, su carrera hubiera sido muy diferente. Hablamos de finales de los 90 y comienzos de los 2000, la banda termina de nacer en esos años y en 2002 debutan en formato LP, "reign of elements" que atraería las miradas de muchos merecidamente, pero en seguida, cambios en la formación, alguno tan sensible como en el puesto de vocalista, algo muy susceptible de generar opiniones siempre, máxime con un debut y en un segundo intento. Hablamos de power de corte europeo, en el año óptimo para generar ese tipo de sonido, pero igualmente la densidad de bandas haciendo ese subgénero pudo contribuir a un nacimiento menos plácido para "Celesty". Solo otro par de obras en formato LP configuran su discografía, 4 LP's en total entre 2002 y 2009 para en 2013 desaparecer definitivamente. Sin inventar nada nuevo si que demuestran grandes condiciones para desarrollar su sonido, por ejemplo en su segundo LP, "Legacy of hate" de 2004, por ejemplo con el tema "Unbreakable" del que hoy dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Hammerfall - Second To None

 

SECOND  TO  NONE

De vuelta a los, diría yo, innecesriamente calificados como polémicos Hammerfall, ya que no debería haberseles puesto bajo una mirada tan crítica desde tan temprano, quizá al inicio no se les debió deificar de tal manera ni despues denostar de manera tan gratuita, es simplemente un caso más de banda que ha encontrado un filón y lo explota repitiendo una fórmula que les funciona perfectamente desde el punto de vista de las ventas como desde el de la puesta en escena en directo, aprendiendo esto también con ña práctica a través de su obra más innovadora "Infected" que fue una pura crítica por parte de propios y extraños, la lectura clara, volver a lo suyo, y en esas están. En 2016 editaban su décimo LP de estudio, "Built to last" con esas características compositivas tan 100% Hammerfall. Poco que añadir, tan solo dejar otra muestra más del buen album, en este caso el tema que lo cierra, "Second to none", cocinado a medio gas, pero con fuerza, un tema del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Silver Bullet - The Ones To Fall

 

THE  ONES  TO  FALL

Dispuestos a girar con Stratovarius presentando su nuevo LP, los finlandeses "Silver Bullet" nos presentan su tercer trabajo de estudio en estos primeros días del año 2023, y así a finales de este mes de Enero verá la luz su "Shadowfall". Tras despertar al mundo metálico con sobre todo su segundo trabajo de 2019, "Mooncult" que recibió buenas críticas y mostró un tremendo potencial, afrontan este "Shadowfall" con cambios en la formación, la parte vocal ha cambiado y ahora el encargado es el uruguayo Bruno Proveschi, que realiza una buena labor haciendo que uno no se tome ese cambio como algo trascendente. Como siempre el grupo promete a través de la vertiente melódica una interesante obra que de momento va desgranando con tres adelantos, el primero de ellos fue "The Ones to fall" y de él quiero hoy dejar un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Morifade - Words I Never Speak

 

WORDS  I  NEVER  SPEAK

A mediados, o más bien inicios de la década de los 2000, los suecos Morifade dieron un cierto giro compositivo, o quizá conceptual al estilo, o a la forma, dejaron un poco de lado el concepto basado en la fantasía para decantarse por uno más genérico, nunca dejo de ser un power de corte europeo pero algo había cambiado. Dejando a un lado el tema de si es un cambio para bien o para mal, que cada uno tendrá como siempre una opinión, el hecho es que la banda terminaría por disolverse en 2011 tras cuatro LP's editados. El tercer LP de ellos se tituló "Domination", de 2003, un disco que puso de manifiesto ese citado cambio de estilo, sobre todo respecto a su debut de 1999, se nota esa necesidad evolutiva aunque tras este LP la banda sufriría un parón de más de un lustro, casi una década, para en 2011 editar el disco final de la banda. Volviendo al disco "Domination" dejo en el blog uno de sus temas, concretamente "words I never speak", de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - White Wizzard - Live Free Or Die

 

LIVE  FREE  OR  DIE

Desde 2007 lleva en activo esta banda estado unidense de heavy metal de la escuela americana y en la onda de grupos como Skull Fist por ejemplo. Así pues, con un trasfondo clásico, y un baño actual desarrollan su sonido a lo largo ya de cuatro LP's de estudio a los que hay que sumar sus dos EP's iniciales. El primero de esos LP's llevó por título "Over the top" editado en 2010, y de dicha obra quiero dejar hoy en el blog su canción "Live free or die" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - AC/DC - Shake Your Foundations

 

SHAKE  YOUR  FOUNDATIONS

Hablar de AC/DC en muchas ocasiones y para muchos metalheads, como ocurre con otras bandas de ese nivel de popularidad, es hacerlo de su historia pasada y presente, es hacerlo de las diferentes épocas, de los dos frontman diferentes que han guiado su camino vocal, es siempre, y como siempre en estos casos, injusto, pues, sobre todo en este caso concreto, cada obra de los australianos tiene algo que ofrecer, y defender lo que muchos defienden de que solo la época Scott o que desde inicios de los 80, que viene a ser lo mismo, la banda solo se ha repetido cada vez con menos acierto, es como mínimo injusto. Más allá de lo personal en lo que a gustos se refiere, las obras de la banda siempre dejan algo que destacar. En 1985 editaban su décimo LP de estudio, "Fly on the wall", y de él quiero hoy dejar en el blog una de sus canciones como prueba argumental de lo anteriormente esgrimido, concretamente "Shake your foundations" de la que dejo un enlace a youtube de su clip oficial.

Canciones para una vida - Dragonland - Astronomy

 

ASTRONOMY

Cambio de siglo, escena sueca, género power metal sinfónico de corte europeo, todo a priori parece perfecto para unirse a las bandas llenas de éxito que funcionaron con esos parámetros, sin embargo el grupo parece que nunca tuvo el favor del grueso del gran público, y por ello quizá, la falta de continuidad cercenó definitivamente su despegue más arriba de lo que lograron llegar. Quizá una vez más la saturación de ese tipo de bandas en esa época y con esas circunstancias les hizo permanecer agazapados hasta nuestros días, en que siguen intentandolo, con lanzamiento de obra incluido en 2022, el que ha sido su sexto LP de estudio, como digo un bagaje un tenato escaso para más de dos décadas de carrera. 2006 fue el año que veía su cuarto intento compositivo encarnado en el LP "astronomy", un disco que pone bien de manifiesto las capacidades, la versatilidad que esta banda ha demostrado en muchas ocasiones, y que siempre en potencia, les hizo merecedores de mucho más de lo cosechado, buen ejemplo es el tema que da nombre a la obra, "Astronomy", del que hoy dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Def Leppard - Rock Rock Till' You Drop

 

ROCK  ROCK  TILL'  YOU  DROP

Es siempre una lástima que bandas o artistas que al menos en parte le deban su buen nombre musical al heavy metal, terminen por renegar de esa parte de su carrera, de su historia, una cosa es que la evolución compositiva les aleje de sus orígenes, como es el caso de estos británicos, y otra renegar. Los tres primeros discos entre 1980 y 1983 tienen un concepto mucho más guitarrero, siempre en ese límite entre el hard rock y el heavy, El tercer LP, "Pyromania" de 1983, fue un gran disco, bastante guitarrero, con el condimento siempre "Def Leppard" de single facilote y enganchón, pero de vocación mas hard 'n heavy, como sus otras dos primeras obras.
