Wintersun, o lo que es lo mismo Jari Maempaa están de vuelta en este 2024, y como suele ser común en lo que se refiere en general a este genial músico sus presentaciones de material nuevo no son comunes, y en este caso, aprovechando que tras muchos años de esfuerzo compositivo, de pelearse consigo mismo para dar la forma deseada a su disco "Time II", sucesor de la primera parte, el músico ha decidido sacra un montón de material nuevo y no, como si sacase de repente todo el material que tenía escondido y no sacaba con el atasco de "Time II", solo esquivado con "The forest seasons" de 2017. El músico ya ha declarado su alivio tras poder decir que había terminado con "Time II" y su problema real con la obra se dio a la hora de la grabación, de llegar a todo lo que tenía en su cabeza y lograr canalizarlo en la grabación lo que le llevo a quemarse y aparcarlo. Con la llegada de agosto saldrá a la venta "Time II" y además este "Time Package" que recoge mucho material regular y adicional, incluyendo a lo largo de 12 discos la versión regular de Time II, y varias versiones diferentes de la misma obra, "The forest seasons" con variantes, canciones nuevas en versión demo y un disco que ha llamado "Fantasy metal project" con diez temas entre los que estará este "The steel of the gods" que dejo hoy en el blog, desde luego este músico se sale de lo común, en todos los sentidos, dejo un enlace a youtube de este "The steel of the gods".

Canciones para una vida - Judas Priest - Victim Of Changes

VICTIM  OF  CHANGES

En ese eterno e irresoluble debate de quien fue la primera banda en practicar heavy metal al uso, lo que no puede extrañar a nadie es que en todas las quinielas, del puñado de bandas de las que se habla siempre esté Judas Priest optando al título, y es que cuando se compara el sonido tempranero de la banda con lo que se hacía en la época no cabe ninguna duda de que el heavy metal es algo inherente al grupo. Es siempre por ello una casi obligación para cualquier metalhead mantener vivo el recuerdo de las primeras obras de la banda por su valor tanto histórico como compositivo en si mismas. El segundo trabajo del grupo llevó por título "Sad wings of destiny" de 1976, se afianzaban, despertaban miradas y comenzaban su sendero de referente para millones de bandas posteriores. Canciones para una vida - Achelous - Into The Shadows

INTO  THE  SHADOWS

La carrera de los griegos Achelous va ganando en consistencia obra tras obra como demuestra el último trabajo publicado por la banda hace tan solo unos días, "Tower of high sorcery" editado este 22 de marzo de forma oficial. Como vienen haciendo desde el inicio de su carrera heavy power metal de corte épico, en la línea de tantas bandas griegas y muchas italianas que escogen ese concepto compositivo donde se logran las atmósferas épicas a través de melodías sin artificios sintetizados, y a través de coros. Otra muestra de la madurez que va alcanzando la banda es la colaboración con artistas reputados, en el caso del tema que hoy dejo en el blog nada menos que Harry "The Tyrant" Conklin, voz de Jag Panzer por ejemplo, canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Quartz - Wildfire

 

WILDFIRE

Otra banda de las que estuvieron dando el callo a comienzos de la historia del heavy metal como tal, en la parte inicial, en plena explosión de la NWOBHM, los británicos "Quartz" quienes en principio desarrollaron una carrera breve, separandose demasiado temprano a juzgar por la magnitud de sus obras iniciales, sobre todo este "Stand up and fight" que de nuevo hoy traigo al blog, pero que desde 2011, como muchas bandas coetáneas a ellos han hecho, viven un segundo periodo de actividad edtando un par más de LP's. Por supuesto hablamos de heavy metal de corte clásico, y este segundo LP de estudio del grupo llega en 1980, como digo en plena explosión de bandas y del heavy metal como tal. Canciones para una vida - TYR - Hammered

 

HAMMERED

La verdad es que el pasado LP de TYR, "Hel" de 2019 no me dejó un gran sabor de boca, si unimos a la tardanza compositiva que el disco tuvo ya que su predecesor era de 2013 el hecho compositivo en si mismo, luego la salida en 2018 del guitarrista Terji, se me antojaba un futuro un tanto lúgubre para la continuidad de la banda. Si a todo ello le añadimos que entre "Hel" y este "Battle Ballads" ha pasado otro lustro la verdad es que no daba un duro por que el grupo siguiera adelante, sin embargo, este 2024 ha destapado su noveno disco de estudio y además, a juzgar por sus adelantos a un nivel muy superior al de sus dos trabajos anteriores, lo que me llena de alegría cara al futuro del grupo y el sendero compositivo que puedan escoger, El segundo de los adelantos de este "Battle Ballads" lleva por titulo "Hammered" y de él dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Snakeye - Blue Feeling

BLUE  FEELING

Volviendo a las raíces del heavy metal que conocemos, traigo hoy al blog a los canadienses "Snakeye" que desarrollaron su corta carrera en la década de los 70 y comienzos de los 80. Con tan solo 2 LP's de estudio. En 1971 se forman y en 1982 se separan, en 1975 editan su primer LP, "Blue Feeling" y en 1980 su segundo y último "Shape up or ship out". Claramente hablamos de un sonido previo al heavy como tal, con una importante carga hard rock,y casi blues, elementos tods importantes como base para lo que sería luego el heavy metal, pero hablamos de mediados de los 70. Seguramente parte de la culpa de lo breve de su carrera se deba a la inestabilidad de su formación, con demasiados cambios en su relativamente corta carrera. Canciones para una vida - Armed Forces - Protectors Of The Realm

PROTECTORS  OF  THE  REALM

De nuevo una banda de existencia breve, o mejor dicho de corta productividad a pesar de lo que el potencial hubiese permitido. Se trata de los estadounidenses "Armed Forces", con su heavy metal proto powerizado que llegan a la escena un pelín tarde, se antoja, por el tipo de sonido y su actividad ya en la década de los 90. Ese puede ser el único "pero", ya que su propuesta es contundente y efectiva y habría encajado a la perfección un lustro antes siendo una plataforma perfecta para tratar de despegar hacia metas más ambiciosas, pero en los 90 con la consabida evolución sonora, la diversificación y nacimiento de propuestas nuevas eran malos momentos para nacer como banda de heavy metal clásico, la verdad. En 1991 editan este "Take on the nation" que tendría su sucesor en 1999 "Armed Forces" como preludio de la desaparición de la banda poco después. Canciones para una vida - Rail - Seasons Of Change

SEASONS  OF CHANGE

Hay casos y casos, pero los estadounidenses "Rail" son uno de esos en los que resulta absolutamente incomprensible que no llegasen a más que lo que hicieron en sus primeros años, y es que comenzaron por todo lo alto, antes incluso de editar su primer disco, "Arrival" en 1980 lograron una oportunidad única, de las que se dan una vez en la vida, girar con nada menos que Van Halen por el territorio americano abriendo para ellos en más de 40 conciertos, despúes de terminar la gira se les ofreció hacer lo propio por Europa pero lo rechazaron para así grabar el citado disco, "Arrival" de ese mismo 1980. Logran vender más de 200 000 copias, y después, tras presentarse a un concurso de la MTV de bandas sin sello, ya que arrival lo editan bajo su mismo sello, ganan el premio de que EMI les grabase su siguiente material, el fenomenal EP "Rail" de cuatro temas en 1984. Despuès, en 1985 editan "Rail Three", de nuevo bajo su propio sello "Dynasty Records", después de lo cual se diluyen hasta 1997 con "Big World", tras lo que llega su silencio compositivo hasta la actualidad. Realmente merece la pena hacer una inmersión en la discografía de estos chicos, especialmente de su debut del que dejo hoy en el blog otro ejemplo más, "Seasons of change" del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Vamos con la banda alemana "Night Laser", un grupo formado en 2014 que orienta su sonido a una especie de mezcla entre un heavy melódico y un hard rock moderno. Canciones para una vida - Vulture - Unhallowed And Forgotten

UNHALLOWED  AND  FORGOTTEN

Sinplemente viendo la portada, el logo uno intuye de que puede ir el sonido de esta banda, de clarísimo sabor clásico los alemanes "Vulture" navegan en ese concepto de heavy metal de la vieja escuela pero un paso más acelerado, muy speedico su concepto, ese eslabón entre el heavy metal y el thrash que tanto se prodigó en los ochenta, sobre todo en la primera mitad, y estos tíos podrían pasar completamente desapercibidos en 1985. Formados en 2015 han editado desde su inicio un total de cuatro LP's de estudio, el cuarto de ellos "Sentinels" de este 2024, (verá la luz este proximo mes de abril), y de él quiero dejar en el blog el tema "Unhallowed and forgotten" del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Borknagar - Nordic Anthem

  

NORDIC  ANTHEM

Los noruegos Borknagar han vuelto a la carga en este 2024 con su duodécimo LP de estudio, de título "Fall" en el que perpetúan su sonido black progresivo nórdico. Formados en 1994 son una de esas bandas que sin hacer mucho ruido han sabido forjarse una respetable trayectoria, y su discografía cargada de buenos momentos va obra tras obra adquiriendo un elevado peso específico. De este "Fall" que vió la luz este febrero quiero dejar en el blog su tema "Nordic Anthem", un tema introspectivo a la par que épico que en palabras de la banda es una canción que pretende alcanzar el interior del oyente y alimentarle con energía, fortaleza y libertad, una canción de la que dejo un enlace a youtube de su clip oficial.

Canciones para una vida - Elvenking - Ethel

 

ETHEL

Los italianos Elvenking muestran en este 2024 el primer paso hacia su nuevo LP que teoricamente cerrará su trilogía de las "Runas" a través del single "Ethel", un tema a medio gas, con un ambiente bastante bucólico, en su tradición "folky". La verdad es que esta banda hace mucho ya que me resulta un tanto predecible y sus obras algo dificiles de digerir sobre todo de una sentada, cada vez más lejos del concepto inicial de power con elementos folk, poderoso y en ocasiones oscuro que tanto me deslumbró con su debut por ejemplo, pero como en tantos otros casos los tiempos pasados dificilmente volverán, sin embargo hay siempre momentos en sus obras que me hacen seguir retornando a sus propuestas nuevas, y en este caso concreto el tema "Ethel" en su onda me resulta bastante atractivo. VAGABOND

Los alemanes "Stormhunter" regresan en este 2024 con su cuarto LP de estudio "Best Before: Death", un esperado disco tras toda una década sin editar material en ese formato, desde 2014 y su "An eye for an I". En este lapso de tiempo el grupo había editado dos trabajos en formato EP en 2020 y 2022, pero ha sido como digo este 2024 el testigo de su continuidad editando LP's. Como siempre un sonido power contundente, con un guiño casi más al power americano que al europeo, pero lleno de efectividad lo que a los que seguimos a la banda desde el inicio de su carrera nos da tranquilidad cara al futuro del grupo. Los estadounidenses Morgul Blade son un grupo formado en 2018, una de esas bandas que han escogido el heavy metal clásico americano como espejo en el que mirarse, con ese componente épico y un tanto oscuro, y que basa su argumentación lírica en la fantasía siendo muy de su gusto las obras Tokieninas. En 2019 editan su primer material de estudio en formato EP para tener continuidad dos años después con su primer LP "Fell sorcery abounds". GODS  OF  METAL

Aprovechando el tirón de su debut, la buena acogida del lustroso power metal perfectamente diseñado con el apoyo de la discográfica que lo patrocina (AFM), la banda internacional "All for metal" ha comenzado este 2024 editando un par de singles para mantenerse en la retina del gran público y que no se considere su debut como algo puntual sino que "amenaza" la banda con seguir adelante. Canciones para una vida - Hammer King - The Devil Will I Do

THE  DEVIL  WILL  I  DO

Se van desgranando temas de la nueva obra de los alemanes Hammer King, "Konig Und Kaiser" que verá la luz de forma oficial mañana mismo en el que será ya su sexto LP de estudio, fieles a su concepto sobre todo efectivo. El segundo de los adelantos de la mencionada obra lleva por título "The Devil Will I Do" y en ella la banda rinde homenaje a Monty Python en lo que ellos denominan como un himno de libertad y de resistencia. Es innegable que estos alemanes son una auténtica maquina de crear melodías, y a pesar de que muchas de sus canciones puedan parecerse no dejan de ser igualmente efectivas y eficaces. Canciones para una vida - Parth Gallen - Night's Watch

NIGHT'S  WATCH

Los brasileños Parth Gallen son una banda que ha tenido un recorrido extraño ya que su periodo de actividad se remonta a comienzos de los 2000, exactamente entre 2001 y 2005 un periodo en el que no editaron nada de manera oficial. Después en 2017 recopilan una serie de canciones de los viejos tiempos y en este 2024 han editado un EP "Burning Swans" que contiene alguno de esos temas, estamos hablando de ese power tan de finales de los 90 y comienzos de los 2000, con un aire ciertamente europeo, aunque no tanto a la vertiente sueca o nórdica como al concepto italiano por ejemplo. La verdad es que no queda del todo claro si la banda se ha vuelto a juntar o si solo han decidido editar algo de su material, sea como sea hoy dejo en el blog uno de esos temas, "Night's Watch" del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Beowulf - Fantasy

 

FANTASY

Vamos con uno de los que podríamos llamar pioneros anónimos en esto del heavy metal, una demostración más de que además de la escena británica a comienzos de los ochenta y finales de los setenta había otras, sobre todo esta, la estadounidense, donde el heavy metal como tal se gestaba a través de miles de grupos que tenía las mismas inquietudes compositivas. En este caso hablo de un grupo de Los Angeles formado en 1976 y separado en 1980, en el mismo año en que editaron su único trabajo, son Beowulf, heavy metal primitivo, original, del recién nacido y por lo tanto sobre todo honesto. De este primer y único trabajo "Slice Of Life" de 1980 dejo hoy en el blog uno de sus temas, "Fantasy" del que dejo un enlace a youtube, otro desconocido pedacito de historia metálica.

ARVON  TUOMARI

Un poquito de folk death melódico en onda Ensiferum encarnado en los también finlandeses "Verikalpa" que en este 2024 editarán en apenas un mes su cuarto LP de estudio de título "Tuomio". Como es tradición en la banda las canciones están cantadas en su suomi natal y el aire folk épico está asegurado con las melodías y coros, como digo, y que se puede apreciar particularmente en este primer adelanto, muy en onda Ensiferum. CHERRY  MEDICINE

El estadounidense Ace Frehley sigue con su carrera en solitario, que comenzase primero como Frehley's Comet entre 1984 y 1989 tras su salida de Kiss en 1982, después como Ace Frehley entre 1989 y 1995 hasta su fugaz regreso a Kiss, que continuó con ese mismo nombre Ace Frehley tras su segunda salida de Kiss en 2002 y hasta la actualidad. El guitarrista ha bordeado los terrenos sonoros entre el heavy melódico y el hard rock a lo largo de sus 9 albumes de estudio al margen de Kiss, el último de ellos de este 2024 "10000 Volts", del que quiero dejar hoy en el blog uno de sus temas, "Cherry Medicine" del que dejo un enlace a youtube de su clip oficial.

Canciones para una vida - Black Widow - Blade Runner

BLADE  RUNNER

La escena ochentera belga resultó ser, además de ciertamente underground bastante prolífica y de calildad, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que todo lo que en esos años iniciales de la citada década no procediese de la escena británica o estadounidense era considerado una cosa exótica como mínimo, pero las escenas, sobre todo europeas, y en América la canadiense, iban cavando a lo suyo, en silencio, casi siempre sin reconocimiento, en la oscuridad del anonimato, pero creando grupos, bandas en no pocas ocasiones monodisco, que no encontraban los medios económicos para seguir ya que los compositivos quedaba claro que los llevaban de serie. Otro ejemplo el de estos belgas, "Black Widow", heavy metal de la vieja escuela, periodo de actividad entre 1980 y 1987, fruto compositivo su único album de estudio "Streetfighter" de 1984 y del que dejo hoy en el blog su tema "Blade Runner" del que dejo un enlace a youtube.
