STEEL THE LIGHT

Q5 es una banda de Hard ' n ' heavy de Estados Unidos, formada en 1983 por entre otros Floyd Rose en la guitarra, musico e ingeniero, conocido en el mundo de la música por la creación de un revolucionario puente de guitarra llamada  The Floyd Rose Locking Tremolo, o simplemente Floyd Rose. Es un tipo de puente que sujeta las cuerdas con tornillos y se balancea en resortes o muelles, y que será popularizado los guitarristas de heavy metal de la década de los ochenta. Como grupo, Q5 tiene dos discos de estudio, de los años 1984 y 1985, separandose en 1986 y recientemente volviendo a juntarse este año 2014, ya veremos con que resultado. Hoy quiero dejar una canción en el blog del primero de sus dos discos, Steel the Light, homónimo al disco, como digo del año 1984, uno de sus temas más característicos y famosos. Canciones para una vida - At Vance - Soldier Of Time

SOLDIER OF TIME

Como ya hemos dicho en este blog, esta banda alemana nace  bajo el nombre de Centers y comienzan a utilizar el nombre de At Vance a partir de 1998, sacando su primera obra de estudio es 1999, desde ese momento 9 LP's han visto la luz y el grupo ha sufrido varios cambios en la formación original, así, de los dos integrantes originales, Olaf Lenk en las guitarras y teclados y Oliver Hartmann a la voz, tan solo Olaf continua, abandonando Oliver la formación en 2003. En cierto modo, la característica y portentosa voz de Oliver Hartmann fue marca del grupo, aunque a nivel compositivo si que se ha mantenido el grupo al mismo nivel a pesar de los cambios en el puesto de cantante. Hoy quiero dejar una canción del grupo, de su primera época con Oliver a la voz, concretamente de su segunda obra de estudio, del año 2000. La canción es "Soldier of Time", un tema que representa perfectamente el espiritu neoclásico de At vance en sus primeros tiempos. Dejo un enlace a Youtube.

Canciones para una vida - AC/DC - Hells Bells

HELLS BELLS

Si hay un grupo australiano conocido y reconocido a nivel planetario, ese es sin duda AC DC, y es que las ventas de obras de esta banda son alucinantes. Tan solo del disco que hoy quiero dejar en el blog, este "Back In Black" se calcula que han vendido más de 50 millones de copias. En 1973, Malmcom Young y Angus Young formaron AC/DC, reclutando al bajista Larry Van Kriedt, al cantante Dave Evans y al batería Colin Burgess. En 1974, Angus y Malcolm se deshicieron del resto del grupo e iniciaron la búsqueda de miembros para una nueva formación. Bon Scott se hará cargo de las voces hasta su trágica muerte en 1980 por una intoxicación etílica. Este disco fue el noveno de la banda y el primero con Brian Johnson como vocalista. Desde sus comienzos más de 20 obras de estudio nos hablan de un mito más que de una banda, en la que ambos vocalistas marcarán la historia del grupo. Singles hay infinidad, y si tuviese que escoger un disco de esta banda me quedaría sin duda con su The Razords edge, de 1990, al que inevitablemente haremos referencia en este blog, pero hoy quiero referirme a su archiconocido himno "Hells Bells", como digo de su disco Back In Black, de 1980, su novena obra de estudio, y la que marca el cambio de vocalista. Hells Bells resulta una canción de esas necesarias para cualquier amante de nuestro género que no podia pasar desapercibida sin que la mencionasemos en este blog, al igual que la banda AC DC. Canciones para una vida - Stratovarius - Eternity

ETERNITY

Volvemos a Stratovarius en este blog, y muy probablemente no será la última vez que lo hagamos, pues como ya dije en la anterior entrada de estos finlandeses, se trata de una banda que no necesita de ninguna presentación. Como ya dije, dos grandes nombres han marcado la historia de este grupo, Timo Tolkki a la guitarra y Timo Kotipelto a la voz, a pesar de que ninguno de ellos fuera mienbro fundador de la banda. El primero de ambos que se incorporó fue Tolkki muy al principio tocando desde la primera obra de estudio y ocupándose de las funciones de vocalista también en los tres primeros discos. En 1994, y para la grabación de su quinta obra Fourth dimension se incorpora Kotipelto a la voz. Desde esa época el grupo no dejó de crecer y crecer y podemos decir que su éxito fue el abono perfecto para el sugimiento posterior de tantas y tan impresionantes bandas finlandesas en el escenario internacional. Quiero pararme hoy en esta obra, Episode, de 1996, su sexta obra de estudio, en la que muestran una consolidación dentro del estilo, y en la que se reconoce, en gran parte, el sonido que harán desde entonces. El disco a mi juicio es perfecto siendo uno de los que más, si no el que más, me gusta de la banda y escoger una canción tan solo, se antoja dificil. Me decantaré en esta ocasión por su "eternity" un tema de casi siete minutos que realmente se hace hasta corto, y que desde el comienzo se hace enganchón, con un toque un poco progresivo y una composición impecable. En fin, este discazo es uno de esos que hay simplemente que comprarse. Dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Dark Moor - Green Eyes

GREEN EYES

Hoy traigo a unos compatriotas, los españoles Dark Moor. Se trata de una buena banda con un ya largo recorrido en esto de la música, pues se forman en 1993, permaneciendo en la escena underground hasta 1998 en que ve la luz su demo. Al año siguiente, en 1999 publican su primer disco de estudio y desde entonces, con varios cambios en la formación han editado 9 discos de estudio más dos EP's hasta la fecha de esta reseña. Su musica es un power metal clásico con ciertas influencias medievales en ocasiones y de temática fantástica. Quiero dejar un tema del disco Beyond the sea, su quinta obra de estudio, de 2005, llamado Green Eyes, basado en un poema de Becquer, una de las canciones que más me gustan de toda su discografía, del que dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Manowar - The Power Of Thy Sword

THE POWER OF THY SWORD

Superdiscazo de los americanos, tras sus aclamados Fighting the world y Kings of metal, se sacaron de la chistera este disco, bastante conceptual, que les afianzó más si cabe en la cima del autodenominado True Metal. Este The Triumph of Steel, de 1992, es una obra contundente y compacta en la que Manowar da rienda suelta a su estilo, con una marcada linea argumental, sobre todo en su primera canción, una historia de 28 minutos, si no me falla la memoria, dividida en 8 partes, todo un reto, pues hay que reconocer que hay que ser valiente para realizar algo así, sin embargo, lejos de hacerse eterno, al tener partes muy marcadas resulta facil de escuchar. El resto de canciones del album son más estandar, y de gran calidad. Quiero dejar en el blog una de mis favoritas, aunque debo reconocer que todas las canciones de este disco me gustan mucho. Me refiero a la canción The Power of thy sword, con su épico comienzo del sonido de una espada afilandose... toda una declaración de intenciones.... una gran canción de la que dejo un enlace a Youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Iron Maiden - Killers

KILLERS

Como ya dije en la anterior entrada de los Maiden, no diré nada para descubrirlos por supuesto, que podria decir que ya no sepais, en fin una banda con 15 discos de estudio a sus espaldas y un recorrido desde 1975 hasta nuestros dias y con más de 85 millones de discos vendidos hasta el año 2010 no necesita más avales. Hoy me quiero referir a su obra Killers, de 1981, la segunda obra de estudio de la banda y la última con Paul Di'Anno a la voz antes de su salida del grupo, cosa que sucedería antes de la grabación de su siguiente disco, The number of the beast, al año siguiente, con el gran Dickinson ya en funciones vocales. Paul Di'Anno fue invitado a dejar el grupo al no encontrarse preparado en ese momento para afrontar el desafío de cantar con la banda en sus amplias giras, debido al problema que había desarrollado de adicción al alcohol y las drogas, cosa que comenzaba a hacerse evidente en sus shows en vivo, algunos de los cuales no conseguía terminar por su mala condición física. En cuestiones musicales, este disco es espectacular desde la primera hasta la última nota, y para mi tiene una gran carga emocional al ser el primer material que cayó en mis manos de esta superbanda. He escogido el tema homónimo al disco, un tema que representa muy bien de que va el sonido del disco, del que cada tema merece la pena. Dejo un enlace a youtube de este Killers.

Canciones para una vida - Alestorm - 1741 (The Battle Of Cartagena)

1741 (THE BATTLE OF CARTAGENA)

Desde el Reino Unido, desde Escocia llegan estos chicos con su power metal pitata, de corte folk, que tanto y tan merecido exito estan cosechando disco tras disco. Formados en 2004 bajo el nombre de Battleheart, tras sacar dos EP's con dicha denominación despertando grandes expectativas, consiguen firmar con la discográfica Napalm Records, con la "condición" de cambiar de nombre a la banda ya que a juicio de la discográfica se parecía demasiado al nombre de la banda Battlelore, tambien en ese mismo sello. Deciden así cambiar su nombre por Alestorm en 2007, comenzando a editar material de estudio bajo dicho nombre en 2008. Desde entonces, y hasta la fecha de esta reseña, 4 discos de estudio y un EP dan forma a la historia de este buen grupo caracterizado por su temática pirata. Quiero dejar en el blog esta canción, 1741 The battle of Cartagena, de 2014, una canción de su cuarta y de momento última obra de estudio Sunset on the golden age, salida hace tan solo unos meses, y que a pesar de ser una canción de más de 7 minutos en nigún momento se hace larga, virtud de las cosas que se hacen con calidad, y es que Alestorm destila calidad por todas partes, de hecho hace ya tiempo que dejaron de ser una promesa para empezar a encabezar carteles de conciertos con cierta garantía de llenado. Canciones para una vida - Rage - Black In Mind

BLACK IN MIND

Ya hemos hablado de esta banda en este blog, imposible no hacerlo pues tienen también un puesto de honor por méritos propios. Como ya dijimos,  Rage es una banda de Alemania que se formó con el nombre de Avenger en 1984 sacando un disco bajo esa denominación en 1985. A partir de 1986 comenzaron a llamarse Rage y con ese nombre han sacado 20 discos de estudio hasta la fecha de esta reseña. Su música ha evolucionado desde sus comienzos de un heavy speed power metal con toques thrash hasta el power metal con toques sinfónicos y orquestaciones de hoy en día, y han pasado por cambios en su formación aunque siempre con músicos de gran reputación. Hoy quiero dejar en el blog la canción Black in mind, de su disco homónimo, de 1995, su octava obra de estudio, y todo un clásico ya de nuestra música. Uno de los últimos discos de Rage antes de introducir tanta instrumentación suplementaria, tanta orquestación, que sin ser una crítica, si que hace que en ocasiones echemos de menos el sonido más crudo y cañero de esta época al mirar sus últimas obras. Canciones para una vida - Lost Horizon - Pure

PURE

Como ya dije en la anterior entrada de Lost horizon, es  otro de esos grupos que podrían haber sido de los más grandes de la escena internacional si no fuese por su limitadísima discografía entre los años 2000 y 2003 en que sacaron su segundo y por desgracia último album. Se trata de este A flame to the ground beneath, digno sucesor de su alucinante primera obra, en la misma linea en calidad, lo que deja ese sabor agridulce a los fans, dulce por la calidad de sus discos, amargo por haber disfrutado tan solo de dos de ellos. Como ya dije anteriormente, alla por Julio, El vocalista Daniel Heiman, despues del "A flame to the ground Beneath" dejaria la banda junto con Fredrik Olsson para formar Heed, nombre bajo el que sacaron un solo disco que sin ser malo ni mucho menos y con algun tema memorable no se acerca a lo que fue Lost Horizon. Para alegría de los amantes de las cualidades vocales de Daniel, en este último mes ha salido la última obra de Harmony, banda sueca de la que recientemente hemos comentado algo en este blog, y en la que se ha enrolado el genial cantante. Canciones para una vida - Orden Ogan - F.E.V.E.R.

F.E.V.E.R.

Uno de esos grupos irrepetibles que aparecen de cuando en cuando en el panorama internacional. Se trata de los alemanes Orden Ogan, que ya llevan bastantes años dando guerra pero que parecen no tener todo el reconocimiento que sin duda merecen por su impresionante calidad. Formados en 1996 comienzan a sacar demos en 1997, pero no será hasta 2004 cuando saquen su primer larga duración Testimonium A.D., toda una declaración de intenciones de lo que llegarían a ser más adelante. En 2008 editan su espectacular segunda obra, Vale, y desde ese momento todo ha ido a más... calidad indudable para, disco tras disco, demostrar que son uno de los mejores en su estilo. Hasta la fecha de esta reseña cuentan con cuatro obras de estudio pero en apenas un mes editarán su esperada quinta obra, titulada ravenhead, de la que ya ha salido el single de adelanto, este F.E.V.E.R. del que dejo un enlace a youtube, y que a juzgar por su calidad promete ser un disco alucinante de power metal del bueno. Mientras esperamos ya las últimas semanas para devorar su Ravenhead tendremos que conformarnos con este pedazo de single con un currado Videoclip, en la onda Orden Ogan. Dejo el enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Wintersun - Beyond The Dark Sun

BEYOND THE DARK SUN

Hablar de Wintersun es hablar de Jari Mäempää, y por lo tanto hablar inevitablemente de Ensiferum. Formado en Finlandia, en 2003, el grupo Wintersun comienza como un proyecto paralelo de Jari Mäempää mientras tocaba en la banda Ensiferum, con la que cantó y compuso en sus dos primeros discos, ensiferum de 2001 y Iron de 2004. Ante la imposibilidad de conciliar horarios entre giras sesiones de grabación para Ensiferum y sesiones de grabación para Wintersun, Jari sale de Ensiferum siendo sustituido por Petri Lindroos, por entonces guitarra y vocalista de los también finlandeses Norther. Jari se dedica ya en cuerpo y alma solo a Wintersun sacando en 2004 su primer larga duración, este Wintersun Wintersun del que como curiosidad se tuvo que encargar de todos los instrumentos menos la bateria para grabarlo hasta encontrar músicos apropiados. No será hasta 2012, ocho años después, y ya con una formación más estable detrás, cuando sacará su segunda obra de estudio, Time I que supuestamente este año que entra verá su segunda parte al ser una obra conceptual. La música de Wintersun es Symphonic death metal melódico con algún rastro de progresividad, menos centrado en la épica que Ensiferum, pero un poco en esa línea. Quiero dejar un temazo de su primer disco Wintersun de 2004, llamado Beyond the dark sun donde se pueden comprobar las intenciones de este magnifico guitarrista y vocalista. Todo un lujo. Canciones para una vida - Manowar - Battle Hymn

BATTLE HYMN

Un repaso a la historia de nuestra música hoy al referirnos al primer larga duración de los estadounidenses Manowar. Como ya he comentado en alguna entrada anterior de Manowar, se forman en 1979, cuando el bajista Joey DeMaio, quien ejercia como técnico de sonido con Black Sabbath y el guitarrista Ross The Boss se encontraron en una gira que Black Sabbath estaba realizando.Tras su demo de 1981, será en 1982 cuando saquen este Battle Hymn, su debut en estudio que nos deja ya muchos de los clichés prototípicos de esta gran banda, y no hay mejor muestra que el tema homónimo al disco, Battle Hymn, donde se reconoce totalmente el estilo que han mantenido hasta hoy en día, impulsor del movimiento conocido como True Metal, que otras bandas han adoptado también como suyo y que Manowar comenzó. Un tema fundamental y de gran calidad que no puede faltar si hablamos de canciones para una vida. Dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Turisas - Cursed Be Iron

CURSED BE IRON

Volvemos nuevamente a los finlandeses Turisas, una banda que sin duda se lo merece por su buen hacer musical. En esta ocasión dejo en el blog un tema de su segunda obra de estudio, The varangian way, de 2007. Se trata de la contundente cursed be iron, todo un trayazo de energía al más puro estilo turisas, y uno de los temas que más me gustan de este discazo que a mi entender no tiene desperdicio, si no tan solo escucha temas como To Holmgard and Beyond o Miklagard Overture. Como ya dije en la anterior entrada de Turisas, esta es una banda a la que le gusta experimentar con su sonido, y la época de este disco es francamente buena en lo que al sonido del grupo se refiere. Canciones para una vida - Judas Priest - Painkiller

PAINKILLER

Otro de esos grupos con mayúsculas del que poco se puede decir que no sepa todo el mundo, tan solo un breve recorrido por su historia. Formados en Inglaterra en 1969 bajo el nombre Freight por dos de sus miembros, K.K. Downing e Ian Hill, que eran compañeros de escuela. En 1970 dan un paso adelante e incorporan a Al Atkins en funciones de vocalista cambiando su nombre al de Judas Priest. Asi van funcionando sacando demos hasta 1973. En 1974 hay un cambio decisivo pues el vocalista pasa a ser Rob Halford, uno de los sellos representativos de esta superbanda. Desde ese momento 17 obras de estudio hablan de una de las bandas más grandes que ha dado nuestra música. Escoger entre tantas obras y tan buenas se antoja complicado pero por algún sitio hay que comenzar y quiero hacerlo por uno de sus temas más icónicos de uno de los discos que más me gustan de ellos, el Painkiller de 1990. Quiero destacar el tema homónimo, Painkiller, aunque el disco es perfecto entero, aunque solo sea por el espectacular solo de batería que abre la canción, y que la hace inconfundible. Hablaremos inevitablemente más de los Judas por estas tierras bloguisticas, pues su material es simplemente fundamental. Dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Axxis - Tales Of Glory Island

TALES OF GLORY ISLAND

Repetimos con esta superbanda alemana. Como ya dije en mi anterior entrada de Axxis, esta banda abarca desde el hard n heavy hasta el melodic power metal, más o menos siguiendo esta evolución. Como también dije, comenzaron su andadura musical allá por el año 1988 en que sacaron su primera demo. Desde 1989 en que sacaron su primer album han realizado 13 discos de estudio. Este al que hoy me quiero referir, Paradise in Flames, de 2006, es de la segunda parte, es decir, más orientado al power metal melodico, con más presencia de teclados. En concreto quiero dejar en el blog la canción Tales of glory island, con el sello Axxis más prototípico de sus últimos tiempos, un tema con mucho filo que entra a la primera. Canciones para una vida - Medieval Steel - Medieval Steel

MEDIEVAL STEEL

Medieval Steel es una de esas bandas que han dejado solo una pequeña muestra de lo que podían haber llegado a ser, y siempre es por una parte una pena y por otra una alegría encontrarse con cosas así, evidentemente una pena por el hecho de que no hayan tenido la ocasión de desarrollarse musicalmente con el potencial que tenían, y al mismo tiempo una alegría porque al menos grabaron algo de material. En este caso, los Estadounidenses Medieval steel nos dejaron un puñadito de canciones en forma del EP homónimo, de 1984, que dejan bien claro el potencial al que me refería. Formados en 1982, será en 1984 cuando editen este EP con cuatro temas del que quiero destacar su Medieval Steel. Más tarde editarían otra demo con otros cuatro temas, ya en 1989, así como dos recopilaciones con sus temas en 2005 y 2012, la última de ellas preparando el terreno posiblemente para su primer larga duración sacado este mismo año, hace escasamente un par de meses. Esta última obra aún no la he escuchado como para dar mi opinión, pero lo haré sin duda. Volviendo al EP del 84, hay que tener en cuenta que el sonido es el que es, primero por la época, y segundo por los medios limitados y la autoproducción, pero aun asi es impresionante lo que consiguieron estos chicos, un power metal pionero en la época, que aunque solo sea por eso merece todo el respeto. Aconsejo descubrir cosas como esta para entender completamente este mundo nuestro del heavy, pues además nos llevaremos agradables sorpresas como estos Medieval Steel. Dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Harmony - Inhale

INHALE

Harmony son un grupo sueco de power metal, que tiene tres discos de estudio hasta la fecha de esta reseña. Formados en el año 2000, siempre me han parecido una banda de gran potencial, pero en este tercer y hasta el momento último disco, llamado Theatre of Redemption, sacado hace escasamente un mes, han terminado de dar en el clavo con la incorporación en funciones de vocalista de nada menos que Daniel Heiman, para quienes no sepan quien es, el vocalista de la por desgracia desaparecida banda Lost Horizon, o de Heed. También ha cantado con Crystal eyes en uno de sus discos y sinceramente espero que se decida por una de ellas y tenga más continuidad porque es uno de mis vocalistas preferidos de todos los tiempos. Con dicha incorporación parece que Harmony ha dado un paso al frente, veremos la acogida que tiene el grupo que ya ha demostrado que como banda son muy buenos, sobre todo para mi gusto en su primer disco de 2003 Dreaming Awake. Quiero recomendar este tema, Inhale, que es el que más me ha llamado la atención así en pocas oidas, y que sirve bien como medida del potencial de estos chicos. Dejo un enlace a youtube.

Canciones para una vida - Pertness - Beowulf

BEOWULF

Estos chicos suizos hacen un contundente power metal. Formados en 1993, han pasado practicamente 15 años en la escena underground hasta dar el salto a la escena internacional con su primer disco de estudio. Es en 2008 cuando tras una demo en 1998 sacan un primer disco llamado Masslos que resume su actividad en esos primeros años "underground", sacando acto seguido, en ese mismo 2008 lo que casi podríamos considerar su primer larga duración, el disco Seven Times Eternity del que hoy os dejo este Beowulf. Cuentan con otras dos obras de estudio posteriores, la última de ellas de 2012. En cuanto a la formación, permanece estable desde su fundación hasta 2010 en que tanto bajista como bateria son sustituidos. Como digo su música es un contundente power metal con temática fantastica y un cierto toque épico, y para muestra este botón llamado Beowulf de su primera obra, de 2008, un temazo que nos enseña el potencial de estos suizos. Canciones para una vida - Helloween - Future World

FUTURE WORLD

Poco que decir de este grupo, disco, canción,... como ya dije en la entrada referente al Keeper 2 al referirme al temazo I Want out, la banda no necesita presentación alguna. Ya hice una breve introducción a su historia en dicha anterior entrada, tan solo añadir que si la parte dos fue importante en nuestra música, la uno lo deberia ser más si cabe, primero por ser anterior, de 1987 y además por ser el disco que presento al mundo la impecable e imponente voz de Michael Kiske. Sin duda una obra fundamental, que como curiosidad iba a ser sacada al mismo tiempo con la parte dos, pero la discográfica insistió en retrasar un año la parte dos, hasta 1988, cosas del marketing... En fin, quiero destacar de este discazo la canción Future World, aunque todos sabemos perfectamente la calidad de este disco del que todos los temas son un 10. Dejo un enlace a youtube.
